Murphy’s Story

We first learned of Murphy’s dire situation in September 2023. He was being discarded for $200, described as “loved and well cared for,” with claims that aggressive mustangs required him to be confined to a small stall for his own safety.

Saddle Up 2026

When our transport arrived, the reality was heartbreaking. Before us stood a broken, bleeding, burned, and emaciated elderly burro — nothing like the well-cared-for animal portrayed in the plea. Murphy bore the physical evidence of long-term neglect and cruelty.

In his more than 20 years of life, Murphy had never known kindness. The scars of past atrocities remain, making trust slow and fragile. He may never be comfortable being handled or fully at ease with humans.

Yet at Healing River Ranch, Murphy has found what he was always denied — safety, companionship, and compassion. In our senior burro habitat, he has formed friendships and now lives surrounded by patience and love. Through the sanctuary’s

protection, Murphy is finally experiencing the life he always deserved.

Murphy’s story is one of countless others we have witnessed — animals whose lives began with neglect, fear, and heartbreak. Each journey to sanctuary is long and often painful, yet it is a path that leads to safety, care, and hope. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of our donors, we are able to meet each animal at their moment of greatest need, offering not just survival, but a life filled with dignity, kindness, and love. Every contribution helps transform heartbreak into healing, fear into trust, and neglect into a forever home. Through this shared mission, animals like Murphy can finally experience the life they were always meant to live.

Dust off your boots. Saddle up for good.

Police Department Participates in SHOP WITH A COP YAVAPAI COLLEGE

The Yavapai College Police Department attended the 28th annual Shop with a Cop event in December. This event pairs children with local police officers for a holiday shopping spree, aiming to build positive community relations, boost the children’s self-esteem and provide gifts for their families.

“I enjoy participating in the annual Shop with a Cop event as it allows me to build relationships with the children within our communities,” Yavapai College Police Department Detective Sergeant Megyn Felton says.

“While the Yavapai College Police Department is communitybased policing focused, the Shop with a Cop event allows me to

spend one-on-one time with a child from our community and take pictures with Santa, eat breakfast, shop for presents and watch them enjoy the magic of the holidays. It is an honor to be able to be a part of these experiences with them.”

The annual event is intended to boost children’s self-esteem and morale while allowing them to see officers in a nonintimidating setting. It also provides an opportunity for children to experience the gift of giving — not only did each child shop for themselves; they likewise purchased gifts for their loved ones.

“It’s a great event that all the members of our team enjoy attending,” Yavapai College Police

Chief Tyran Payne says. “Getting to see those kids’ faces light up, the thrill for them to ride in police vehicles with uniformed officers. I think they really get a kick out of it, and we certainly do too.”

He adds: “It’s important, especially for children, to understand that law enforcement officers are approachable, and I think this event does a great job in doing that.”

Yavapai College operates seven campuses and centers throughout Yavapai County and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates, four baccalaureate degrees, student and community services, and cultural events and activities.

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. STAR BUFFALO

With roots grounded in thoughtful songwriting and a sound that effortlessly bridges indie rock, Americana and alt-country, Buffalo Star has been carving out its own lane in the Prescott music scene since 2018. Built around honest storytelling, rich musicianship and a balance of softness and raw edge, the band brings a lived-in authenticity to both their recordings and live performances. In this interview, Buffalo Star reflects on their origins, evolving lineup, creative influences and what continues to drive them to connect with audiences one show at a time.

Photos courtesy of Buffalo Star
From left: Cole Lysons, Chad Calhoun, Mark Harlan Vale, Chris Bennett

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together?

Buffalo Star: The band was founded in 2018, built around Chad Calhoun’s songwriting and lead vocals. Guitarist Chris Bennett, originally from the UK, brings an exceptional, lyrical style to the music. Cole Lysons, a longtime collaborator, anchors the band on bass guitar.

The group’s most recent addition is Harlan Mark Vale from the Pacific Northwest, who joined on drums in 2025 to complete the rhythm section foundation.

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

Buffalo Star: Our music weaves through a range of styles, including indie rock, Americana and altcountry. We’ve heard comparisons to artists like Jason Isbell and Jackson Browne. Our songwriting draws from a singer-songwriter tradition to explore familiar, personal and occasionally more ramshackle themes. We try to push the songs from laid-back to laid-to-waste! That mix of softness and edgy rawness captures our sound. Fans of R.E.M., Wilco and Chris Stapleton will likely find familiar ground in what we do.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?

Buffalo Star: For us, it really comes down to being true to who we are as a band. Being an original group means putting your music on the line and hoping it finds a home. Our goal is to find the people who are meant to hear it. We’re OK with being different and creating our own lane in the Prescott music scene.

Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?

Buffalo Star: It would be one of the festivals. Those are a blast. We played Thunder Valley Rally this year, and that was a fun moment for sure.

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?

Buffalo Star: Every show is an opportunity to reach an expanding audience. We see it as a collaboration where we all come together to serve the music and grow with every performance. We’re always looking forward to our next show, aiming to make it the best one yet!

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?

Buffalo Star: Don’t worry about what other people think. Stick with the people who support you unconditionally. The rest don’t even count.

Pauline Weaver, Prescott's 'First Citizen'— Part 1

When Capt. Nathaniel Pishon led a small column from Santa Fe to the rich gold findings in the Bradshaw Mountains of Central Arizona in the summer of 1863, they camped along Granite Creek. There they happened upon a solitary white hunter named Pauline Weaver.

As a result of the encounter, historian Sharlot Hall later dubbed Weaver the “first citizen of Prescott.”

A trapper, mountain man, Army scout and guide, prospector and rancher, Weaver can truly be called a “man of the West.”

Born in Tennessee around 1797 to a white father and Cherokee mother, Weaver, as a young man, honed his skills as a trapper for Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada. In 1829, he was recruited by Capt. John Rogers to join a trapping party that would spend time in the Rocky Mountains, and as

part of that group he traveled from Taos, New Mexico to California to purchase horses.

It was probably around that time that his given name “Powell,” difficult for local Mexicans to pronounce, was altered to “Paulino,” later anglicized to “Pauline.”

Weaver’s group traveled through the White Mountains, south to the Salt River, then west along the Gila River to Yuma Crossing, thence to California, still part of Mexico.

In the mid-1840s he served as a scout for the Mormon Battalion — a 500-man military regiment composed entirely of volunteers of the Mormon religion — leading them on a 2,000mile road-building expedition from Iowa into New Mexico, down the Gila River, west to Yuma Crossing and finally to San Diego, arriving in January 1847. These efforts were especially

valuable after James Marshall discovered an enormous gold deposit near Sutter's Mill, which opened the flood gates for thousands of miners.

Following the cessation of hostilities in the Mexican American War, Weaver operated a ferry crossing of the Colorado River near Yuma, and later led a group of about 10 prospectors led by A.H. Peeples into the Bradshaw Mountains where they discovered gold in Peeples Valley in the lowlands below the Weaver Mountains, near present day Yarnell.

Prospectors are said to have harvested in excess of $100,000 worth of gold there, using at times jackknifes to pry the nuggets loose.

Favorite Menu Item:

The Endil Platter

A world-class, shareable charcuterie board featuring a curated selection of rich artisan cheeses and a savory assortment of cured meats, mixed olives, grapes, tapenade, hummus and seasonal fruit. Served with sauces, fresh sourdough bread and gluten-free crackers.

The Adventure BEGINS WITH MEAD

Nestled in the cellar of the Historic Burmister building in downtown Prescott, this stunningly cozy tasting room is designed to delight the senses.

If you are among the uninitiated, you may be asking yourself, “Where the heck is this place?” Or “Someone told me about this amazing spot, but I have never seen it!”

If either of these common questions apply, you already are getting into the Superstition spirit because the local speakeasy-style trend started right here over a decade ago. As you descend stout steps of the grand steel staircase a new world presents itself, a cunning contrast because it is so accessible once known, but it feels like uncovering a hidden gem.

Local owners Jeff and Jen Herbert incorporated the board-formed concrete columns poured in 1901 after the great Prescott fire along with cast iron saddles holding Douglas fir beams that arrived on the railroad to rebuild the town as subtle centerpieces of this historic renovation.

At the same time ancient and modern, the namesake

of this tasting room, mead, is where the adventure really begins. Reintroducing the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage with contemporary techniques of fermentation management, barrel aging and blending alongside friendly service has pushed Superstition Meadery to the top of many best-of lists online, with a Google score of 4.8 stars.

The only thing tastier than Superstition’s flagship flight of 12, 1-oz. pours of industry leading meads and hard ciders is pairing those liquid treats with their appetizing tapas. From baked brie topped with berries and honeycomb to a creamy elote dip with jalapeño and lime to the unparalleled charcuterie board that arrives to your table like Christmas morning, there are many reasons why Superstition Meadery is the most unique restaurant in Prescott.

Superstition Meadery, 120 W. Gurley St. (on the Courthouse Plaza), is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A Higher

Standard: the REALTOR® Standard

by the Prescott Area Association of

When buying or selling a home, or even just browsing homes on the internet, you often come across the terms “real estate agent” and “REALTOR®.” While these titles may be used interchangeably, they are not the same.

The very basic difference is that a real estate agent is someone who only holds a state-issued real estate license, while a REALTOR® is someone who holds a real estate license in addition to being a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

But being a REALTOR® means so much more than being a member of NAR; there’s a higher standard to uphold.

NAR holds REALTOR® members to a strict code of ethics that requires updated training every three years. The code of ethics was created in 1913 and designed to set high professional standards, protect the public and

REALTORS®

ensure REALTOR® members serve clients’ best interests through fairness, honesty and cooperation.

It is treated as a living document that is regularly updated to continuously hold REALTORS® to the highest professional standards.

The code of ethics training is a 2.5-hour course that REALTORS® must take at least every three years on top of their state required continuing education courses to maintain their real estate license. But this code is not just a certificate of completion; there are enforced consequences if someone breaks the code of ethics or does not complete the training. These consequences can range from fines, membership suspension or even termination.

On top of the required training and courses that it takes to become a REALTOR®, NAR also offers specialized

designations to set members apart from other agents. These designations include ABR (accredited buyer representative), SRES (senior real estate specialist), CRS (certified residential specialist) and C2EX (commitment to excellence). To obtain and maintain these designations, REALTORS® must go through hours of specified training, testing and real-world applications.

Next time you see these initials in an email signature or on a business card, know that it’s not just alphabet soup; it’s proof of someone’s hard work and dedication to the real estate profession.

When you choose to work with a REALTOR®, you are putting the most important purchase of your life into the hands of a trusted professional who has a fiduciary duty to every one of their clients and is dedicated to providing the highest quality of service.

R ings in 2026 DOWNTOWN PRESCOTT

with the Whiskey Row Boot Drop

Downtown Prescott welcomed the New Year as thousands gathered on historic Whiskey Row for the 15th annual New Year’s Eve Whiskey Row Boot Drop, a long-standing community tradition celebrating the arrival of 2026.

The evening’s signature moment featured the iconic 6-foot illuminated boot descending from the Palace Building’s flagpole — first at 10 p.m. and again at midnight — each drop followed by colorful fireworks that lit up the winter sky.

Live music kept energy high throughout the night, while food trucks, local restaurants, vendors and carnival-style games added to the festive street-party atmosphere. Families, friends and visitors of all ages lined Whiskey Row, capturing photos and sharing in a night that blended celebration, tradition and community spirit to usher in the New Year.

Host 2026 Open Tryout in Northern Arizona NAZ Wranglers

The Wranglers are excited to invite athletes to the local open player tryout ahead of the 2026 season.

The Northern Arizona Wranglers will hold open tryouts on Sunday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to noon to help assemble the roster for the upcoming season. Head Coach Ron James and the Wranglers coaching staff will be evaluating all players during the tryouts. Come see if you have what it takes to play professional Indoor Football.

High school and youth athletes also have the opportunity to participate and experience the pro workout. The youth participants will not be eligible to make the team.

We implemented this during last season and the kids had a blast!

Tryouts will be held at Mountain Valley Park on the turf field in Prescott Valley (8600 E. Nace Ln.).

Participants must be 18 years or older to be eligible to make the team. The fee for pre-registration online is $65, and registration in person on the day of the event is $75.

When you pre-register online, you will receive a digital confirmation for entrance via email.

Please have your confirmation ready on your phone or printed for entry.

In-person reregistration/checkin will begin at 8:30 a.m. sharp and end at 8:55 a.m. Same-day in-person registration fee must be paid in cash.

The on-field evaluation and testing will start promptly at 9 a.m. Some further details about what the tryouts will entail are:

• Players will be required to sign a waiver at check-in.

• The playing surface of the tryout is field turf.

• Participants must provide their own cleats, T-shirts, shorts/ sweats and accessories.

• Tryouts will be noncontact; pads and helmets are not necessary.

• Participants must be prepared upon their arrival — locker room facilities will not be available, although restrooms will be accessible.

• Participants must provide their own water/Gatorade.

• Participants will warm up on their own.

• Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, pro agility drills and more.

• Following the testing phase, players will be competing in position drills led by the coaches.

• The workout will continue with one-on-one competition drills.

• The workout will conclude with group/team drills offense vs. defense as directed by the coaching staff.
