PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

The Tone Kings are playing at Whiskey River Tavern on Jan. 2, 8-11:30 p.m.

THE

Tone Kings

With their energetic performances, eclectic song list and undeniable chemistry on stage, The Tone Kings have become a staple of Prescott’s live music scene. Blending rock, blues and country with their own signature style, the band keeps audiences dancing and smiling wherever they play.

Prescott NOW caught up with guitarist and vocalist Mary Kelley during spring 2025 to talk about the band’s journey, their connection with local audiences and what makes playing music in Prescott so special.

Mick, Greg, Mary and Mike

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together?

Mary Kelley: The Tone Kings band began over five years ago. The current lineup — with Greg Woodbury on lead guitar and vocals, Mick Townley on bass and vocals, Mike Hutchinson on drums and me on lead guitar and vocals — has been together since late 2024. Greg is the only original band member left. Greg was the one who came up with the Tone Kings band name.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience?

Mary Kelley: The band is lucky to have good chemistry! We have a lot of fun playing together and the audience picks up on that. People want to have a good time when they go out.

I really enjoy engaging with the audience. I want everyone to enjoy our music and hopefully laugh at my silly jokes! We’re energized when we see people dancing and having fun. There are a lot of great musicians in this town, so we feel lucky when people come out to see us. Prescott audiences are the best!

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

Mary Kelley: Eclectic! We play a variety of tunes from many different genres and artists: the Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, K.T. Tunstall, Bonnie Raitt, Toby Keith, Tommy Castro, Delbert McClinton, Queen, R.E.M. Lots of rock n’ roll, some blues, some country; a mixed bag of song types, for sure.

Greg and I share the rhythm and lead guitar parts. I think we complement each other really well. Our rhythm section, Mick on bass and Mike on drums, gives a strong heartbeat to the songs, helps keep them danceable. We definitely bring our own spin to each song.

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?

Mary Kelley: Mick’s advice would be to work harder to establish a music career at an earlier age. I would tell my younger self to have more confidence in what you do. Each of us brings a unique perspective to how we perform songs, to the stories we tell through the songs we sing and play. Don’t compare yourself to someone else — just be yourself, do your own thing.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Mary Kelley: I was visiting relatives in Prescott several years ago. I remember walking up and down Whiskey Row, just amazed to hear so much live music and thinking how cool it would be if I could live here. I’ve lived here almost seven years now, and love it.

The Prescott music scene was a big draw for the guys as well. All of us feel pretty lucky to live in a town with such a vibrant music scene. There are a lot of places in town where you can see some good bands — especially The Tone Kings!

The Many Sides to Tom Horn, Part 2

In last month’s edition of Prescott NOW, I introduced iconic westerner Tom Horn. At various times, he was a government scout and packer during the Apache wars, a member of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders during the Spanish American war, a Pinkerton detective, a deputy sheriff in Globe, a “hired gun” during both the Pleasant Valley War in Arizona and the Johnson County war in Wyoming, and a range detective in Colorado and Wyoming, charged with apprehending cattle rustlers. It was in this last period of employment for the large ranch owners that Horn fell from grace.

His policy for dealing with rustlers was to become extensively visible in the area frequented by a rustler gang, then to warn that if they persisted in this malevolence, there would be consequences, perhaps

lethal. Horn was known to have carried out this threat on at least four occasions.

News of deaths spread quickly and accomplished exactly what Horn and his employers hoped for, a rapid exodus of alleged cattle thieves.

However, a feud between two families, the Nichols, who raised sheep, and the Millers, who were cattlemen, persisted. On July 18, 1901, the body of 14-year-old Willy Nicholl was found shot to death.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Joe LaFors arrested Jim Miller and both his sons in connection with the homicide. LaFors also suspected Horn, inviting him to have a conversation in his office. Unbeknownst to Horn, the marshal had secreted a stenographer in a closet with orders to take down every word of the conversation.

LaFors and Horn had known each other for many years and were engaged in drinking and talking about old times, when LaFors asked Horn about the Willy Nichol murder.

“If I done it, it was the best shot I ever made and the dirtiest deed I ever done,” Horn responded. Unfortunately for Horn, the stenographer missed the first four words, and the “confession” was enough for LaFors to arrest Horn for homicide.

A jury found Horn guilty of firstdegree murder, and he was hanged for the crime on Nov. 20, 1903. The question of Horn’s guilt persists to this day. In 1993 a “mock” trial was held and Horn was acquitted.

TRAILS 4 TATAS 2025:

OFF-ROADING FOR A CAUSE

Oct. 4 the off-road community in and around Prescott came together for something bigger than the trails themselves. The annual Trails 4 Tatas, created and hosted by Summit 4X4 Company and led by the Summit 4X4 Club leaders, Laurie Cwikla and Victor Torres, has become one of the area’s most anticipated community fundraisers.

It raised more than $100,000 this year.

The event is a celebration of adventure, strength and compassion that brings off-roaders, families and businesses together to raise money and awareness for those battling breast cancer. All proceeds from Trails 4 Tatas go directly to the YRMC Baskin Breast Care Center in Prescott Valley and serve patients throughout Yavapai County.

The funds help provide essential resources like medical expenses, wigs, child care, meals and transportation to appointments.

This year’s event featured four trail runs, each offering a unique experience and level of challenge for participants.

• Bannie Mine Trail: A classic local favorite with tight turns, rocky climbs and plenty of history woven through the old mining terrain.

• The V-Notch: A more technical route that tested drivers’ precision and control, perfect for those looking for a little extra adrenaline.

• Skull Valley to Copper Basin: Known for its sweeping views and mix of terrain, this run offered a great balance of fun and exploration.

• Skyline Drive: A scenic route perfect for families and newer off-roaders, filled with beautiful views of the Prescott area.

After a fun morning on the trails, participants participated in lunch, followed by raffles and auctions. The tables were stacked high with prizes donated by generous sponsors and brands from across the off-road industry.

The lunch, donated by Jersey Mike’s, was a huge hit and a reminder of the support local businesses provide to this event every year. Volunteers served hundreds of meals while participants swapped trail stories and laughed about the morning’s adventures.

Thanks to our title sponsor Findlay Toyota of Prescott, and every single one of our generous donors, we hit a new fundraising milestone for Trails 4 Tatas. We would also like to recognize Novus Glass of Northern Arizona and Culver’s of Prescott for joining us as top-level sponsors and for their continued support of this cause.

A Cozy Home

STARTS WITH Winter Prep

As temperatures drop, taking time to winterize your home can make all the difference not just for your comfort, but for your safety and wallet too. From preventing costly damage to keeping your family healthy, these simple seasonal checks help ensure your home survives the winter without issues.

Start with safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires occur more often in winter than in any other season, and carbon monoxide incidents rise sharply. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to confirm they’re working properly and replace batteries if needed.

Remember to check your fireplaces as well to ensure they are clear of animals or debris.

Manage moisture and air quality. Condensation or frost on windows

can signal high indoor humidity. Run bathroom exhaust fans and keep air circulating to prevent mold and moisture buildup.

Proper ventilation also will help your heating system work more efficiently.

Protect your plumbing. Frozen pipes are one of winter’s costliest headaches. Wrap exposed pipes — especially those in attics, basements and crawl spaces — with inexpensive foam pipe insulation to keep them from freezing.

For homes vacant during the winter, turn off the water supply and drain all pipes and toilets. If you don’t drain your pipes, keep your furnace running at 55°F or higher, and open interior doors and cabinets to let warm air circulate around plumbing.

Don’t forget your exterior. Clear walkways regularly and use pet-

safe salt to prevent slips and protect paws. Check seals around doors and windows and install weather stripping or door sweeps to block drafts.

Changing your interior curtains from a lightweight material to thermal lined curtains can help retain heat and keep out the chilly weather too.

Use your ceiling fans wisely. In winter, reverse the direction of your ceiling fan to spin clockwise at a low speed. This gentle updraft pushes warm air down, reducing strain on your furnace and trimming your energy bills.

Winterizing your home doesn’t require a big investment, just a few hours of attention and some simple upgrades. With these steps, you’ll stay safer, save energy and enjoy a cozier, worry-free season indoors.

‘COACH CATFISH’ ATHELLI

H ockey ICON Departs Findlay Toyota Center

After more than two decades of service, dedication and community impact, Satish “Coach Catfish” Athelli is departing Findlay Toyota Center to assume a senior executive position with a large sports organization.

Known throughout Arizona as “Coach Catfish,” Athelli leaves behind a legacy of leadership, integrity and inspiration.

Athelli’s connection to hockey and Arizona sports runs deep. Perhaps most well-known in the Greater Prescott area for his time with the Arizona Sundogs, including the club’s 2008 Central Hockey League Championship season, he has been a pillar of Arizona hockey for nearly three decades. From the midnight leagues to the IHL, formerly the Phoenix Roadrunners to NHL and being on the ice at America West Arena the day the Phoenix Coyotes name was announced (still owning the original team warmups).

helped guide numerous players to the collegiate, junior and professional ranks.

Named 2017 Citizen of the Year by the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce, Athelli raised over $30,000 for local veterans and thousands more for cancer support programs.

He also played a key role in organizing the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial at Findlay Toyota Center that was a monumental event including a White House visit, F-18 flyovers and national recognition for honoring the fallen heroes with dignity and respect. To date it is the largest-scale event organized in the Greater Prescott area.

Athelli received the secondhighest civilian award — Presidential Citizens Medal — from the White House, and was personally thanked by then-Vice President Joe Biden.

Then add decades of coaching, development and mentorship, “Coach Catfish” has helped shape the foundation and growth of hockey in Arizona.

He has introduced well over 1,000 children to the sport through learn-to-skate programs, run countless clinics, coached teams to more than 20 state championships, multiple national titles, and

Athelli received the secondhighest civilian award — Presidential Citizens Medal — from the White House, and was personally thanked by then-Vice President Joe Biden. Locally, Athelli was named the first and only Honorary Firefighter in Yavapai County.

“Thank you for the nice accolades, it’s not about me at all,” Athelli says. “I’ve just been blessed to be around so many wonderful people. All the credit should really go to them. I just got to know them, and when they asked for help, I did. As far as being on the ice, I am a much better coach than player.”

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Brings Ballet Magic

Beautiful Feet Ballet is delighted to present its second annual winter ballet performance with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, a beloved story of courage, sacrifice and redemption brought to life through the beauty of classical ballet.

Performances at the Ruth Street Theater, 1050 Ruth St., Prescott, will be 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14.

This timeless tale, written by C.S. Lewis and first published in 1950, tells the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, four siblings who discover the magical land of Narnia through an enchanted wardrobe. Guided by Aslan, the great lion, they embark on a journey of faith and bravery to overcome the White Witch and bring spring — and hope — back to Narnia.

Beautiful Feet Ballet’s adaptation captures the wonder of Lewis’s world through expressive movement, elegant choreography and heartfelt storytelling. The performance weaves together

themes of good and evil, sacrifice and salvation, and the triumph of light over darkness — making it a perfect celebration for the Christmas season.

Founded by Jennah Fair, Beautiful Feet Ballet began as a simple dream, a homeschool mother’s wish to offer her daughter a faithbased classical ballet education. What started with two small classes has blossomed into a thriving community of over 100 dancers who share friendship, artistry and a mission: to point hearts toward Jesus through the gift of dance.

Classes are held at the Elks Performing Arts Center, and the school continues to grow as a beacon of light and beauty in the Prescott arts community.

“This production is a labor of love and faith,” Fair, who directs the performances, says.

“ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe beautifully reflects the message of hope and redemption that we celebrate during Christmas, and we are honored to share it once again with our community.”
