Shonto’s Story

I answered a call about a horse on the reservation in trouble. We made the long drive north — past the open desert and red mesas beyond Tuba City.

For years he had been seen drifting in and out with bands of bachelor stallions, appearing only when food and water became scarce. Those who watched over the area believed he had been dumped long ago. Unlike the wild horses, he carried the unmistakable look of a domestic horse trying to survive.

His body was badly torn up.

Deciding to intervene in such cases is never simple. Our choices must be guided by whether we can truly provide care and quality of life. There are so many who suffer, far more than we can ever help.

I gave him a name that reflects both who he once was and who he could be: Shonto, the Navajo word for sunshine springs.

When Shonto arrived at Healing River Ranch, we gave him time to decompress, to rest and to slowly adjust to the safety of his new home. Then we began diagnostics, implementing a refeeding and nutrition protocol. Shonto was nearly 150 pounds underweight. At some point, he had suffered a fractured neck, and several pellets were still lodged there from having been shot.

What stands out most about Shonto today is who he is. His kind heart is felt throughout the herd, and his gentle, old soul carries a quiet sense of peace that seems to settle over everything around him.

Our sanctuary is a forever home for elderly, special-needs, and hospice animals — those often overlooked or forgotten — who were once destined for euthanasia or slaughter. Here, they live out their lives surrounded by safety, dignity, love and enrichment.

ARE MANY MEANINGFUL WAYS

We are sustained entirely through grants, donations and fundraising efforts and receive no government funding. Every dollar donated goes directly toward providing life-saving care and lifelong sanctuary for animals in need.

PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

BLUE PELHAM

After decades spent raising families, building careers and cheering on the next generation, the members of Pelham Blue found their way back to the music that first shaped them. What began as separate journeys through church groups and local bands in their younger years ultimately converged in Prescott, where a shared love of ‘90s and early 2000s pop-punk-rock sparked something new. Nearly three years later, Pelham Blue has become a high-energy local favorite, blending nostalgia, passion and seasoned musicianship into performances that celebrate both where they’ve been and the joy of starting again.

Photos by Blushing Cactus Photography
Band members: Brandon Brizal (drums), Cadu Medina (guitar), Chad Dixson (vocals), Charlie Clark (guitar) and Darrell Denlinger (bass)

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together?

Pelham Blue: We’ve been playing together for almost three years now. We were all once musicians in our 20s and 30s playing for different bands and in church groups. One day after 30 years raising family, children and grandchildren, we all decided that it was time to start playing music again. That’s when our paths crossed in Prescott and Pelham Blue was born.

Prescott NOW: What's the story behind your band's name?

Pelham Blue: Our band name Pelham Blue was inspired by the Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl’s Gibson ES-335 unique Pelham Blue color. Their music is something that represents who we are and what we love.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?

Pelham Blue: We connect with our audience by playing with energy and enthusiasm, playing hits as the audience remembers them and to the best of our abilities, and engaging with the audience to make them feel like they’re part of the experience.

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?

Pelham Blue: Our sound is a mix of pop-punk-rock from the ‘90s and early 2000s. Think Foo Fighters, Green Day, Blink-182, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and a variety of other bands that represent the best pop-punkrock from these decades.

Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?

Pelham Blue: The most memorable moment was when we played the Prescott Summer Concert back in 2023. We were barely ready to play a large stage, but we took the chance and had an amazing time in front of a large audience at the Courthouse Plaza in Prescott. It reminded us why we love doing what we do, and it put us on the local bands’ map.

Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self?

Pelham Blue: Be patient. The best is yet to come!

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform?

Pelham Blue: We’re motivated by the connection we feel with our audience, the love of creating music and the joy of performing together as a band. It’s an incredible feeling to share our passion with others.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Pelham Blue: We are all transplants from somewhere else in the world to Prescott and Prescott Valley. And this community has been home to all of us for 20-plus years. It’s a place that certainly feels like home and inspires us and our families.

Findlay Subaru Prescott

Celebrates Local Wish Kid

Findlay Subaru Prescott proudly hosted a memorable Make-A-Wish® Arizona Send-Off Party in February for 12-year-old Wish Kid Jason, who lives with an autoimmune disorder. He wished for an adventure at Walt Disney World® Resort.

As Jason entered the dealership, he was met with an enthusiastic surprise welcome from the Findlay Subaru Prescott team, administrative office staff, Make-A-Wish® Arizona representatives, and even customers, creating a moment that took him by surprise. After being initially overwhelmed, Jason and his family entered the celebration with smiles and gratitude as they met the team and took in the festive atmosphere.

Jason shared his excitement for two attractions he’s been dreaming

of: Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and TRON Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom — the rides he says he was “most looking forward to.”

To make the family’s wish trip even more special, General Manager Jason Jenkins presented Jason and his family with a generous collection of gifts and essentials for their adventure. Each family member received Subaru gear hats, water bottles, travel neck pillows, luggage tags, ponchos, fanny packs, plus Prescott K-9 Supporter T-shirts and Visa gift cards, so everyone could bring back something special from their vacation.

The celebration also included double chocolate cupcakes, one of Jason’s favorite treats. His

grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all joined to celebrate.

The family departed for Orlando, Florida, Feb. 15, where they spent the week at Give Kids the World Village exploring the Walt Disney World parks.

Make-A-Wish is one of Subaru’s national charity partners, and Subaru retailers nationwide help support wish-granting for children with critical illnesses. Findlay Subaru Prescott is honored to help bring joy, strength and unforgettable moments to families like Jason’s through this partnership. A special thank you to Vicki Fiorelli, Sr. Director of New Business Partnerships, for her support in allowing Findlay Subaru Prescott to help make Jason’s wish even more magical!

Spotlight: MARK'S BEER GARDEN

Featured Menu Item: Jägerschnitzel (the “Hunter’s Cut”) is a perfectly fried pork cutlet topped with thick-cut bacon and mushroom gravy, served with a side of traditional spätzle (noodle dumpling).

Prescott's Hidden G em: MARK'S BEER GARDEN

story and photos courtesy of Mark’s Beer Garden

Opened in 2018, Mark's BeerGarden is a quirky, German-inspired bar and grill that has grown from local secret to lively community favorite. It’s a welcoming little pub with a not-so-little patio — and a downright big personality.

Step through the wooden gates and you’ll instantly feel the charm that makes this place uniquely Prescott. Wooden picnic tables sit beneath twinkling string lights, fire pits glow on cool evenings, and a rustic pine stage comes alive with local musicians during the warmer months.

Inside, guests are greeted at a beautiful hardwood bar and invited to explore a well-curated drink menu featuring a balance of imported German beers, locally crafted brews, national favorites, and even the occasional cider. Mark’s taps are always offering something new.

What truly elevates Mark’s BeerGarden is the food. Owner and head cook Mark Davidson takes pride in serving elevated, fresh, handmade bar-food classics.

The menu has something for everyone from German beer brats with sauerkraut to smoked Buffalo wings and made-to-order wood-fired pizza. Local regulars swear that best burger deal in town is the weekday $15 burger, beer & fries special. No visit is complete without the Bavarian pretzel with warm beer cheese.

Yet, for all its excellent food and drink, the heart of Mark’s BeerGarden is its atmosphere.

It’s a true pub — welcoming, familiar and community-centric. Families spread out on the patio playing lawn games on weekend afternoons. Wednesday-night trivia fills the tables. Cheers rise from inside when a favorite team scores during Monday night games.

Seasonal events like Oktoberfest, tap takeovers and charity chili cook-offs give the calendar a festive rhythm. Mark’s BeerGarden isn’t just a bar, it’s Prescott’s community living room.

Catering parties on-site and off-site. Gift cards are available.

Jazz Journey at the Elks:

A Trip to New Orleans

Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center

7 p.m. – Crystal Hall

With guest artist Greg Varlotta. New Orleans is complex and mysterious, so it makes sense that that jazz should follow the same tune. Many believe jazz is a product of the special cultural environment found in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traces of French and Spanish roots, along with the resilience of African influences and the flavor of European immigration mixed and mingled together to produced America’s most distinctive musical style.

Thinking of

Selling? 7 Factors to Consider

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®

You’ve thought about selling your home — but it’s a big step. You’re not sure whether it’s the right time. These seven discussion questions can help you think through the decision.

1. Does the home still fit you and your family?

Life changes can change the way you think about your home. Adding household members, separating from a partner, watching adult children move away, and even new personal interests and needs can make a home suddenly feel too large or too small.

2. Have you made a career or lifestyle shift?

A new job further from home, a commute that was once tolerable but now feels like a drain, a desire to escape urban living or vice versa — all are legitimate reasons to consider a sale.

3. Have kids changed your priorities?

You may love your neighborhood but, due to changing circumstances, decide it’s not right for your children. Whether you’re seeking proximity to outdoor recreation, schools with a better student-teacher ratio, greater enrichment opportunities, or help with special needs, a move may be the answer.

4. Have you had a change in income?

A big promotion or inheritance might spark a desire to “move up” to a home that’s larger or has more amenities. On the flip side, maybe you’re going from two incomes to one and need to downsize to a more manageable home and mortgage.

5. Is the market ripe for a sale? There’s no “right time to sell.” Every market, every house and every

homeowner’s situation is different. But selling when market demand is high can be advantageous. A REALTOR®, a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, can talk with you about your market’s current dynamics and your home’s current market value

6. Have interest rates changed? When rates fall, refinancing to lower your monthly payment might make sense. But a rate drop might also be an opportunity to trade up to that home you thought you couldn’t afford.

7. Are you ready for a turnkey home? Maybe you’re finding your home too expensive or difficult to maintain — or you bought a fixer-upper only to learn that renovations aren’t your jam. In those situations, think about a move to a turnkey home. Sanity and family harmony beat living in limbo.
