My Haven No. 13 The Flower Arranger’s Shed, 1000pc
Our Cover Puzzle Our My Haven series has been one of our bestselling puzzle lines for since it began in 2016. This series, with artwork by Essex-based artist Steve Read puts the spotlight on all kinds of cosy hideaways, from Beach Hut to Craft Shed and lots in between. Number thirteen in the series celebrates The Flower Arranger’s Shed with its array of beautiful flowers fresh from the garden.
If you feel like joining the growing number of puzzlers enjoying the pastime competitively, why not check out some upcoming events? “The UK speed puzzling community is awesome, and we’re excited to help puzzlers connect!,” explains Graham. “If you fancy giving it a try, proceed with caution because you’ll be hooked! All kinds of people take part, so you’ll have a fun time no matter how fast you puzzle.” Today the group has completed some 25 online races, each time bringing together dozens of likeminded puzzlers for fast-paced fun and friendship.

We’ve been celebrating the ways that jigsaws are bringing people together in the local community. But, communities today can keep in touch and yet be hundreds of miles apart too! The Puzzle Guzzle offers a series of online puzzle races, and is the brainchild of puzzle fan Graham Parker. Originally created to give a chance for entrants to the UK Nationals to practice, the initiative has gone from strength to strength.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Fashionably Fun Sophie Jonas-Hill’s contemporary take on the always-in-a-rush White Rabbit from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is pure magic. We caught up with the artist to find out more.
Can you tell us how you cam e to be an artist and illustrat or? SJH: I’ve always drawn, from the moment I could hold a pencil. I’ve had a lot of varied care ers, I also teach silversmithin g, am a published author and use d to be a pattern cutter, but they’ve all had a creative side and drawing at their heart. Life got in the way for a while, but I dec ided to get back on track by doing an MA in illustration with Falm outh University, which was daunting but really interest ing and exciting, and seemed to combine my love of telling stories with creating images . Fashionably Late is based on the White Rabbit from Alic e’s Adventures in Wonderland . What drew you to this the me? SJH: It’s a book I’ve always adored, along with Alice Thr ough the Looking Glass. I think I wrote about the books whe n I was at primary school and cam e second place in the school’ s Mastermind competition with it as my specialist subject ! Later on, I was endlessly exc ited to find new readings and interpretations of the story, and the way it has so man y echoes and references in pop ular culture. Because it’s been interpreted and reimagin ed in so many ways, I think that gives you permission to find your own way to play with its characters and ima ges, and I imagined the Wh ite Rabbit character as if his late ness was a choice, rather than something to panic about.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Puntastic Puzzling Ray Nicholson is bringing comedy classic fun to puzzlers with our Ray’s Comic Series of puzzles. Here we find out a bit more about his passion for puns.
Your illustrations are full of humour. Are you a born comedian, or do you mostly express your humour through art? No, I don’t think that I am a born comedian but I must say it’s always hard for me to stay serious in a conversation. I always try to throw in a little joke. Where do you get the inspiration for the comedy antics that are going on in your puzzle designs? Anywhere - I use internet, books and comics. Every day, I go for a one-hour walk and let my thoughts wander around the puzzle. It also comes from years of experience, and while I’m drawing, jokes often arise spontaneously. How do you create your artwork? I start with a rough pencil sketch, then make a clean pencil drawing with clear lines. After that, I ink the drawing with a pen or brush. Once it’s finished, I scan it into the computer and colour it in Photoshop. The newest puzzle theme in Ray’s Comic Series is Time Travel. Which time period would you travel to if you had the chance? Definitely in the future. Seeing how much the world has changed over the past 100 years, and how quickly, makes me curious about how it will change over the next 100 to 200 years.
