House Edge vs Probability What the Numbers Actually Mean How single-event chances, expected value, variance and game rules fit together
Editorial scope: This guide explains mathematics and responsible interpretation. It does not recommend a game or operator, predict results, certify fairness, or provide registration, deposit, bonus or wagering instructions.
Probability and house edge are related, but they answer different questions. Probability describes how likely a stated event is under a stated set of rules. House edge summarizes the operator's expected advantage across repeated wagers after both probabilities and payouts are considered. Readers using the TableGames PH learning platform or any other educational reference should keep those ideas separate. A percentage is meaningful only when its event, rules, payout and time horizon are clear. The most common misunderstanding is to turn a long-run average into a short-session forecast. A house edge of 2% does not mean that exactly two of every 100 wagers lose, that a person will lose 2% in every session, or that the next result is 2% more likely to be a loss. It describes expected net value under specified assumptions over many comparable trials. Short samples can finish far above or below that average.
Probability starts with a defined event
