Since 1946, RARA Recreation has been the #1 recreation provider for Rochester, Rochester Hills, and Oakland Township, offering over 1,200 activities per year. From sports and activities to adaptive services, events, dance, performing arts, fitness, and day camps, RARA is dedicated to strengthening community through play.

This magazine is your ultimate guide to our incredible lineup of day camps, designed to keep kids and teens engaged, active, and having fun all summer long! Whether you’re looking for high-energy sports camps, creative and exploratory activity camps, or the inclusive and life-changing experience of SCAMP—our specialized camp for individuals with special needs—there’s a perfect camp for every camper.

The RARA Board is a policy making board comprised of 7 members, representing the governmental agencies that established our interlocal agreement, and individuals from each of the communities in which we serve.

The board meets on the third Tuesday of each month. 5:00pm at the RARA offices. 500 E Second St. Rochester, MI 48307.

resident/non-resident

To receive the resident rate you must reside within the cities of Rochester or Rochester Hills. RARA is funded through a millage collected in the city of Rochester Hills and a comparable fee in the city of Rochester.

Residency is not connected with the Rochester School District. Residency is determined by where you pay your city taxes. Non-Residents pay an additional 20% , capped at $20 per program in addition to the resident rate.

cancellation of activities

RARA activities at community schools are cancelled when school activities are cancelled. Activities at 500 E Second St. along with other offsite locations will continue as scheduled unless otherwise posted.

In addition, cancellation of programs will be determined by the recreation supervisor in charge of the program as seen fit. Cancellations will be posted at: rararecreation.org and for some programs, registered participants will be notified via email.

Participants must recognize that all activities of physical nature involve some risk, and by registerting for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participants. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of RARA to:

about scamp

SCAMP is a 6-week camp designed for individuals 5-26 with various special needs. SCAMP provides a fun, entertaining, and uplifting day camp experience for all campers through various activities like; bowling, fieldtrips, art and music therapy groups, beach days, and other awesome camp activities! SCAMP maintains a 3 campers: 1 staff ratio.

new vs. returning scampers

NEW: All campers must complete a pre-screening form to be considered for SCAMP 2026. Please email this form directly to Kelsy at kelsy@rararecreation. org. Once the form is submitted, you will be officially added to the wait list for SCAMP and will be contacted with any information necessary. All returning campers get first priority to register, and new campers will be invited to register directly through email should a spot be available. New camper registration will begin in late March/early April.

RETURNING: All information has been emailed to 2025 returning families with detailed instruction for how to register. To register your camper, you must return your camper medical form to Kelsy, along with a $101 deposit payment.

Understanding this is a high price tag, we do have some financial assistance opportunities available. Please reach out to Kelsy directly for further information about financial assistance!

Step into creativity with our TrendTastic art camp! Young artists will craft trendy, internet-inspired art projects, including painting their own Crocs with fun Jibbitz to decorate them with, craft their very own Labubu, and learn how to draw a portrait based on the characters from KPop Demon Hunters. Perfect for young artists to express themselves, learn new skills, and create share-worthy masterpieces! Please pack a nut free snack and drink for your child each day. Lunch and Doodle Option: This option provides supervision and a few small crafts during lunch time, 12:00pm-1:00pm, each day of camp. You would still need to provide a lunch for your child. New! Discover the wonders of working with clay in this hands-on art camp, that is full of messy fun! Artists will learn clay hand-building techniques as they create amazing projects step by step. They’ll create a playful coil fish, sculpt a unique self-portrait, design their very own clay castle and make a colorful dragon. Embrace the messiness and join us for some sculpting, shaping, and transforming clay into one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Let the messy fun begin! Embark on an epic art adventure! In our kids’ camp inspired by How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, and Moana, young artists will draw Stitch, make Toothless slime, sculpt Tamatoa from Moana, and bring more beloved characters to life—all while mastering fun, creative techniques! Please pack a nut free snack and drink for your child each day. Lunch and Doodle Option: This option provides supervision and a few small crafts during lunch time, 12:00pm-1:00pm, each day of camp. You would still need to provide a lunch for your child. This camp can pair with our Grossology STEAM Camp on 7/27-7/31 from 9am-12pm.

Looking for something to do for your little picasso? We have you covered! This camp is great for artistic kids looking to get creative and inspired in a fun and friendly space. Over the course of a week, we will offer drawing, painting on canvas, mixed media, pottery, ceramic painting, sculpting, and hand-built clay.

Create some of your favorite cartoon characters and bring them to life! The kids will draw, write, sculpt, and use all of their creative juices to make some really funny stuff! It’s art that’s so funny they might just snort! Your young artist will hone their skills while crafting masterpieces that guarantee grins. Upcoming projects include quirky Smash Bros. icons, a snoozy Snoopy, and a lasagna-dreaming Garfield—let the giggles begin. Please pack a nut free snack and drink for your child each day. Your Minecraft® master will love this explosive art camp! Your child will learn about and be inspired by the artistry of top grossing app games like Minecraft, Pokémon, and Angry Birds. We’ll work with air-dry clay, Model Magic® and paint to create app-solutely fabulous masterpieces! Please pack a nut free snack and drink for your child each day. Lunch and Doodle Option: This option provides supervision and a few small crafts during lunch time, 12:00pm-1:00pm, each day of camp. You would still need to provide a lunch for your child. This camp can pair with our Freaky Facts Science Camp on 8/10-8/14 from 9am-12pm.

mon-fri 8/17-8/21 puppet lab: build it & bring it to life! camp 9am-12pm Ages: 7+

This imaginative, hands-on camp is where young artists will design original puppets and bring their characters to life on stage. Students will create a variety of puppet styles—from sock and stick puppets to sculpted hand puppets and glowing shadow puppets—while developing unique personalities, backstories, and scripts in their own take-home Puppet Portfolio. Along the way, they’ll build mini stages, paint backdrops, and rehearse their performances, practicing voice, movement, and storytelling skills. The camp concludes with a lively family puppet show on Friday at 11:40am, where students will proudly present their original creations in a joyful final performance.

This mini camp is a vibrant, hands-on textile adventure where young artists will explore the mesmerizing art of weaving. Using yarn, paper, and bold color combinations, students will practice over–under techniques that strengthen fine motor skills, coordination, pattern recognition, and creative problem-solving—all while creating eye-catching woven masterpieces. Along the way, campers will even craft their own handmade pom-poms for an extra pop of fun and texture. Families are invited to a Gallery Show at 4:50pm on Wednesday to celebrate these colorful creation. Please bring a snack, water bottle, and socks for playscape breaks!

7/13-7/17 self-defense & safety camp for kids 9am-4pm Ages: 6-11 RARA Paint Creek Room

Kids, have fun and learn to be safe at the same time! Learn real self-defense and practice on an instructor wearing a padded suit. You’ll also learn fire safety, how to use 911, stranger awareness, drug resistance, gun accident prevention and more. Cartoons, art, physical practice and classroom games are just some of the fun ways that you will learn in this camp. Parents, nothing is more important to us than our children. This camp is more than just a week of fun, it is an investment into a lifetime of safety. Kids will need daily lunch, snacks, water bottle, bag for activities sheets and handouts. Teaching child safety since 1990, we have the experience that empowers kids with the knowledge, skills and mindset that they need to stay safe. This class is taught by Live Safe Academy.

The following camp description is TOP SECRET: Ever dream of becoming a secret agent? We’ll start with the basics: From decoding messages to metal detectors and night vision, campers have the opportunity to check out spy tech equipment and take home lots of gadgets! Step into the shoes of a detective as you uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis! Figure out the science of forensics in a hands-on look at crime scenes! jurassic island steam camp: morning 9am-12pm Ages: 5-11

Calling all budding paleontologists! Set up camp on Jurassic Island, uncover a land forgotten by time, and unearth the incredible secrets of the dinosaurs and their ancient ecosystem. Walk in the footprints of the gentle giant brachiosaurus, race against the velociraptors, soar through the skies with the pterodactyl, and battle the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex. This STEAM-fueled camp is sure to be the learning adventure of all time! For campers who sign up for both the AM and PM camp, they would be welcome to bring a sack lunch and stay and have lunch with our staff from 12pm-1pm, at no extra cost. This camp can pair with our Arcade Mania STEAM Camp on 7/6-7/10 from 1pm-4pm.

This Kids-Choice Challenge Island adventure puts a 100% SCREEN-FREE STEAM twist on popular video games. From Super STEAMio to Island Blox to Mine Island to Fort Island to retro-inspired games like Space Aliens and Pinball Machines, we’ll build looping gliders, ziplines, pyramid slingshots, race carts, volcanic eruptions, snowball runs, pet habitats, sports stadiums, and many other fun, hands-on engineering challenges! You and your STEAM Team will swap game consoles for creativity and joysticks for ingenuity and imagination as you take on islands of low-tech STEAM challenges created with game-loving kids in mind! For campers who sign up for both the AM and PM camp, they would be welcome to bring a sack lunch and stay and have lunch with our staff from 12pm-1pm, at no extra cost. Camp Falcon offers an exciting and fun-filled experience with a variety of activities including games, sports, crafts, special events, guest appearances, challenging outdoor activities, nature hikes, and weekly field trips (usually on Wednesdays). Campers will also enjoy trips to Spencer Beach. At Spencer Park, there are plenty of amenities such as a lake with a lifeguarded beach, picnic areas, a play structure, and sports fields. Drop-off for campers is at the Brick Tent located at Bloomer Park. To reach the Brick Tent, simply drive to the far end of the parking lot, and you’ll find the tent on the back left. Campers need to bring a bathing suit and a towel, non-perishable lunch with their name on it, sunscreen, and water bottle. A camp t-shirt is given out during the week of camp. Latchkey is unstructured, camp staff supervised, OPTIONAL before and after camp care. It is a weekly flat fee per camp you register for. You will need to purchase Latchkey for each camper attending Latchkey. There is a 15 minute grace period for camp without needing to purchase Latchkey so you have 15 minutes before camp and 15 minutes after camp to drop off and pick up your children.

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR LATCHKEY

When registering your campers for camp, there is a question that will ask you if you would like to use Latchkey for that specific week. You will want to hit yes if you will use any of the Latchkey hours. You will want to hit no if you will be dropping your camper off at 10am and picking your camper up at 3pm. If you originally sign your camper up and hit the no option, but later want to use our Latchkey service, there is a Latchkey course you can go to in order to sign your camper up. Camp Staff do not have the ability to take payment for Latchkey onsite so you will need to register for Latchkey before camp or online with a credit card while you are onsite. If you register onsite with a credit card, you must show our Camp Staff your receipt for the week in order for your camper to use Latchkey.

A camp t-shirt is given out during the week of camp. A detailed schedule will be emailed to parents the Friday before camp begins and given to parents on the Monday morning of camp. Additional information can be found on our website.

Each camper must submit a Med Form along with a Behavior Promise form in order to participate in camp. You can find each form at our website rararecreation.org under any camp page.
