The RARA Board is a policy making board comprised of 7 members, representing the governmental agencies that established our interlocal agreement, and individuals from each of the communities in which we serve. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month, 5:00PM at the RARA offices, 500 E Second St. Rochester, MI 48307. Spring MS & HS Dodgeball leagues Dodgeball isn’t just for gym class... get your friends together and play! This coed youth dodgeball 6v6 league is athletes looking for a fun, exciting summer activity. This league runs 6 weeks of regular season games and 1 week of playoffs. Registration includes a team shirt. Teams can carry a max of 10 players. Games are best of 11 matches and all 11 matches will be played. Games will last 45 minutes. . YOuth Field Hockey Clinics This introduction to field hockey is for 2nd6th graders and will consist of 4 dynamic sessions with a set curriculum to introduce players to basic skills, rules and game strategy through live game play and skills stations. Sessions will be focused on play-based learning with an emphasis on team centered fun with competition. Players will need to bring shin guards, mouthguard, water bottle and cleats/ gym shoes/turf shoes. All additional equipment will be provided at the clinics for player use. Each player will receive a clinic t-shirt. The clinics will be coached and supervised by former University of Michigan Women’s Field Hockey player and Chair of Youth Development for the Michigan Chapter of USA Field Hockey, Krista LaRosa and local high school coaches. Spring Volleyball clinics In this 6 session clinic players will learn the game of volleyball with a personalized fun approach. viking football camp This football camp introduces campers ages 12-14 to the fundamentals, skills, drills and terminology that will be used at the middle and high school level. Campers will gain a better understanding of offensive and defensive positions, formations and plays, as well as learn proper techniques for catching, running, and throwing the football, as well as blocking and tackling form. On Thursday, all campers will participate in a Punt/Pass/Kick contest and a 7 on 7 competitive tournament. Bring cleats and a water bottle. Vardar soccer club As the sport or youth soccer in the United States continues to grow and evolve, the nature and role of the youth club must also change. As philosophies of player and team development are refined, it is necessary for club leaders to create the best possible learning and competitive environment for their players. Coach Morris Lupenec, with his hand picked staff of soccer professionals, have established a standard of excellence that is evident on the field and nationally recognized. Morris Lupenec has combined traditions of soccer success and proven player development into the Vardar Soccer Club. Beginning judokas will learn to fall safely and master the fundamentals of basic judo, including throwing and pinning — please note, there is no kicks or punching. Participants can also eventually earn belt ranks. Classes are taught by a certified USJF black belt with over 30 years of teaching experience, including 7 years in adaptive programming. Participants should wear long-sleeved sweatshirts and bottoms, and uniforms can be purchased from the instructor when the participant decides on a gi.

Tell us the dates and options that you’re interested in, and we’ll check for party host and facility availability. Guests can choose from our newlyrenovated Wright Room (capacity: 75 people) or Messy Room (capacity: 50 people), and choose an additional room, including our indoor Playscape, one of our dance studios, or half of the Fieldhouse!

training for girls This course will teach young girls (13-17) the fundamentals of strength and resistance training. The course will start with the foundations of proper form and movement and build on those fundamentals each week. All sessions will run on an interval timer. This will allow the participants to work at their own pace and keep the focus on proper form and fun as opposed to counting “sets and reps”. A Q&A with Recreation Supervisor for Sports & Programs: Matt Higley

We spent some time with Matt Higley, our new Recreation Supervisor for Sports and Programs, to get to know him better and to talk about the upcoming sports camps and programs for the Summer. Matt comes to us with over 10 years experience developing and facilitating recreation programs. He has a bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Services and Masters Degree in Sport and Recreation Management. We are excited to see what Matt will bring to our team!

Q: Tell us about yourself? A: First off, let me just say how excited I am to join the RARA team and get to know the Rochester/Rochester Hills community. My goal is to provide quality programs and enrichment opportunities for people of all ages. When I’m not at work I spend my days at home with my Fiance and our dog Ford. In my free time, I cook, garden, play guitar, and play DnD. I wouldn’t say I am a super competitive person, except when it comes to board games. My fiance and I have a running tally of winners, and love to compete against each other. I play sports when I can, specifically softball and kickball. Unfortunately, my softball team hasn’t been able to grab that championship, but this might be the year. I also umpire Softball and Kickball. I took a small break from recreation during covid and have been ready to jump back in. I love all the programs that RARA has to offer. I can’t wait to continue to provide the great existing programs and create new ones.

Q: What program are you most excited for this summer? A: I would say that I am most excited for our high school sports leagues. I think it is a great opportunity for the kids to learn how to manage their time and their team. If we can provide programs that not only fill their need for competition but also helps develop transferable skills, I’d call that a win. Q: Are there any programs that you are interested in starting here at RARA? A: I am very interested in starting an Esports program. Esports popularity are growing exponentially, and it is hard to ignore them as a viable form of competition and recreation. I’m not sure what form this will take, whether it be leagues, tournaments or clubs, but I do see us developing something in the near future. Q: What if I don’t see a program that fits my needs or I have an organization that wants to partner for a program? A: I am always willing to have a conversation. Feel free to contact me via email or phone to talk about something you would like to see. If there is enough interest, I will do what I can to make it happen.

Important Camp Information!!! Our counselors are all CPR Certified and experienced in childcare and education. All activities will adhere to CDC and ACA Guidelines. Campers need to bring a bathing suit, towel, non-perishable lunch with their name on it, sunscreen, and water bottle. A camp t-shirt is given out during the week of camp. Challenge Island Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics Challenge Island is an award-winning STEAM enrichment program where kids work together in tribes to solve fun, hands-on “challenges” which teach them about STEAM fundamentals, cross curricular topics, plus important success skills like creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and much more. This one-day class is open to those 9-15 years old. Participants will learn to be safe and responsible, build confidence, and have a competitive edge over other babysitters.

This is a one-day class open to participants ages 9-15. Students will learn pet first aid and become a certified Pet Sitter in this course, taught by Live Safe Academy.

Topics will include include first aid, when and how to call 911, CPR with manikin practice, choking, dealing with difficult behaviors, basic care methods like feeding and diapering, marketing and much more! Students who successfully complete the course requirements are certified in the Live Safe Academy Certified Babysitter/CPR/ First Aid course.

This is an add-on course for students who participate in the Certified Babysitter/CPR/ First Aid course on the same day (students of a previous course can become a certified petsitter by taking the virtual petsitting safety course). This program begins after the Babysitting Safety class ends.

Parents, courses #0003 and #0005 will end between 2 PM and 3 PM depending on when students complete the course requirements. Students need a lunch, snacks, and a cell phone (if they own one). Virtual Self-defense for children This virtual class is intended for children ages 6-11. This fun, interactive and ageappropriate workshop teaches essential, lifesaving information about the threats facing children today, strategies for prevention and real-world self-defense techniques that can be learned from home. This class will also include a kidfriendly section on COVID-19 and other communicable illnesses. Moreover, this class teaches children that they have a right to be safe, that nobody has the right to hurt them, and that their life is worth protecting. This course is taught by Live Safe Academy. Come join us on the trails this year for another exciting season of mountain biking. Riders registered for this group will have practices once a week. This is a recreational ride group that is focused on teaching off-road mountain biking skills safety, and trail etiquette through group rides, drills, games and fun activities for enjoyment and a less competitive atmosphere. RAYC Raptors Race Team 2022

If your rider is ready to work on advancing their competitive skills and desires to be part of a traveling cross country mountain bike racing team, then look no farther. The Raptors team is composed of Rochester area student athletes from Grades 1-8. Riders will be actively training and working to improve their riding skills as well as their mental and physical fitness levels that are required for competition. This program teaches offroad riding skills, safety, and etiquette through group rides, drills, games, and fun activities led by certified cycling coaches. Additionally the riders will be exposed to physical and mental challenges that will help them gain mental toughness. Riders registering for the Race Team are expected to race in at least 3 of the MISCA race events that occur from August through October. Judo classes are taught by a certified USJF black belt with over 30 years of teaching experience, including 7 years in adaptive programming for peoples with special needs. Beginner Judokas will learn to fall safely, as well as master the fundamentals of basic Judo (throwing and pinning; there are no kicks and punching) and can eventually earn belt ranks. Accessibility at RARA

Josephine Falzetta shares her experiences enrolling her son in RARA SCAMP, a summer camp for individuals with disabilities. For over 25 years, RARA has run its SCAMP summer camp program every summer for children and young adults with disabilities. SCAMP operates on a 3:1 counselor-to-camper ratio, prioritizing both safety and summer fun for campers 5 - 26 years old. Josephine Falzetta enrolled her son, Salvatore, in SCAMP about 7-8 years ago, and they’ve been coming back ever since.

Q: How would you describe the SCAMP environment? A: Wonderful! The environment makes it easy for them to make friends, but we know our kids may lack the skills to make that happen sometimes. SCAMP sets it up for them to ... utilize the opportunities if they can, and if they can’t, the activities and counselors help them connect and interact and enjoy it too!

Q: In your view, how has participating in SCAMP benefitted Salvatore? A: He was able to have fun without us! He was happy to go do something that was his, independent from his family — the same way his older brother was able to be with friends and do all kinds of activities. This is his social time.

Q: Based off your experiences, would you recommend SCAMP to other parents? A: Absolutely! This environment is fun, has an array of activities and a positive vibe. After a year of school and therapies with demands and goals and expectations, our kids need a camp just to have fun!

Q: Is there a standout memory from Salvatore’s time at SCAMP that you’d like to share? A: When he told me, “goodbye mom, pick me up later,” I knew he was having fun!

SCAMP will be returning this summer! Camp will run Mondays - Thursdays each week from June 20 - July 28, with no camp on July 4. Information will be sent to returning families in the beginning of 2022, and more information will be available on RARA’s website as the date approaches.

This opportunity is designed to support persons with special needs. Enjoy a movie with your friends at the theater one Wednesday a month. You will pay for your own ticket and concessions. Movies and times are based on the current theater schedule. Spots are EXTREMELY limited, so you must pre-register so that we have enough assistance and space reserved. Movie select will be emailed the week of the program.

One Monday a month enjoy a meal with friends at various local restaurants. This opportunity is designed to support persons with special needs. Participants pay for their own meal, beverage, and tip. PRE-REGISTER EARLY as spots are very limited and so that we have enough assistance and space reserved in the restaurants.
