Here lies, the September issue

Gone, but sort of forgotten

THE RAPTOR REPORTZ IS A STUDENT-CREATED, STUDENT-WRITTEN NEWSPAPER, BRINGING YOU NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT FROM LRIS.

WHAT 5TH GRADERS THINK OF LANDIS RUN BY MARIAM AL JANABI & SOPHIA SONI It is a big jump from fourth grade to fifth grade. Landis Run can be a breeze for some people and a challenge for other people. So my friends and I decided to interview fifth graders and see how they’re adjusting to Landis Run. We asked 12 fifth graders 5 questions. Not all of them answered all of the questions, but it is okay. (Editor’s note: We have about 425 5th graders in our building, so these answers don’t represent the majority.) First, we asked them if they are enjoying fifth grade so far. Eight of the twelve fifth graders said they were enjoying fifth grade 3 out of the twelve said it was “mid”, and one fifth grader said that they were not pleased with fifth grade so far. So, most fifth graders we surveyed are enjoying fifth grade. The second question we asked the twelve people was what things they wish they could bring back from elementary school. Since we had so many different answers, we put them all in categories; 2/12 said that they wish they could bring back things like the red, white, and blue kickball game, ABC countdown, and other 4th grade celebrations. 7/12 was the choice with the most answers; these people wish they could bring back people like teachers, kindergarteners, and seeing friends from other floors. The third question is: describe fifth grade in one word. Since we had so many different answers, we categorized them into groups. 3/12 thought fifth grade was joyful and complicated, exciting; 3/12 thought it was different, better, weird, and new; 3/12 thought it was long and tiring, and 4/12 thought fifth grade was hard, independent, and nervous for them. TEACHER FEATURE MRS. SHELLENBERGER BY ELEANOR HARE At the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year, LRIS welcomed a new Gym teacher, Mrs. Shellenburger! My name is Eleanor Hare, and in this teacher feature, I interviewed Mrs. Shellenburger so we could get to know our new gym teacher!

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING/COACHING? A: This is my 21st year as an educator, and I've been coaching for 20 seasons. I started in 2004. Q: WHERE HAVE YOU COACHED/TAUGHT BEFORE? A: I was at the Donegal school district for 15 years and at this one for 7 Q: What is your favorite part about teaching gym class so far? A: I think I enjoy that the environment is more relaxed and we get to have fun because it is not as serious as the classroom environment. Q: WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BECOMING OUR NEW GYM TEACHER? A: My first job was being a gym teacher at Donegal. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL? A: Spending time with my kids and following their sports and activities. Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TO PLAY AND/OR WATCH, AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT IT? A: I love to watch college football, and I played ice hockey for 15 years. Now, I have my own field hockey club!

Q: WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF BEING A GYM TEACHER? A: I think a natural feeling that all teachers have is, “Am I doing a good job? Are kids having fun when I’m teaching them?ˮ Q. WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU? A: I love theater, and I was in a spring musical in 2018 called Into the Woods. I played the Big Bad Wolf. Q: IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL OUR READERS? A: No, I’m just happy to be working here with all my co-workers.

STUDENT LIFE YOU DECIDE! SURVEY SAYS... BY ELEANOR YOUNG

Welcome to the first issue of….. You Decide, where we ask and you answer! Our first question for you guys was, “What Color Are the School Subjects?” The question was made in my brain when a debate broke out with my friends about colors and which class goes with it. I decided to put it to the test, and these are the results. We got 27 responses to this question, and they are not what I thought they’d be. Math was a close race between red and blue, but with 15, Red won! Blue followed close behind with 11, and orange in the back with 1 vote. Now, on to ELA! These votes were so close and ended in a tie! With 7 votes for each, yellow and red tied up for ELA. Blue and green were close behind with 4 votes each. Orange was again farther back with three, and purple in the very back with 2. Onwards to Social Studies! A close race but……… Yellow pulled in front with 7 votes! Close behind were purple, green, and blue with 6 votes each. In the back was orange, again, with 2 votes. Science is next! I think we can all predict which color it’s going to be. Green pulled in front with 15 votes! Purple is second with only 4 votes, and behind purple, a tie appeared! Blue and yellow with three votes in third place. Then, can you guess the last place? Orange on the bottom again with only 2 votes. That’s all for today, thanks for reading! The more votes we get, the more I can write! Our next topic for You Decide will be about Thanksgiving foods! The QR code is below. Peace out!

✌️

Scan the code to tell us your opinion on this month’s survey! The results will be shared in our next issue.

WHAT 5TH GRADERS THINK OF LANDIS RUN, CONTINUED For the fourth question, we only have eleven answers. We asked the fifth graders, “Do you prefer 4th grade or 5th grade?” 6/11 people said that they liked 5th grade better, 3/11 said that they liked 4th grade better, and 2/11 said that they liked both equally. This question only has 10 answers. The final question that we asked the amazing fifth graders that we interviewed was, “What are some challenges you’ve faced so far this year?” The most common answer of them all, with 5/11 answers, was waking up early. I guess the fifth graders like their sleep. The second most common answer, with 3/11 answers, was things like embarrassment, drama, and people remembering to always be kind to everyone; you never know what they are going through. This answer only had one person, and it was adapting to the new environment. If someone needs help getting to class, help them because if that person were you, you would want someone to help you. We love all these responses! A huge thank you to all the brave 5th graders who shared their honest thoughts with Raptor Reportz, and I hope all of you 5th and 6th graders enjoyed reading! Enjoy the rest of this amazing school year!

STUDENT LIFE READ-A-THON

BUSY BEES

BY MARIAM AL JANABI

BY SIBYL SNIVELY

Who’s excited for the Read-a-Thon? I sure am. Most of you 6th graders might remember what Read-a-Thon is, but a lot of 5th graders probably havenʼt heard of this special event yet. This event starts on November 9th and lasts until November 20th. Iʼm Mariam, a 20252026 Read-a-Thon winner (for reading), and I'm going to tell you some tips and tricks to help you during the read-a-thon. First, try setting a goal each day that increases over time. You can start by reading an hour a day, then increase it to an hour and fifteen minutes, and so on. You shouldn’t be like me, who strained my eyes and wasted my time just to win. Also, read books you enjoy! You will definitely read more if you read books you actually like. One important thing to remember is that you still have assignments during this time. You should worry about your assignments first, then the event (but who knows, you could get assigned something that involves reading anyway!). If you don’t feel like reading, you can also support the school by donating money. When you donate money, all of the funds go directly to the school for field trips and other student activities. This event is meant to be fun and a little competitive, and there are lots of amazing prizes up for grabs. So, do your best! Like everyone says, “May the best person win!ˮ ;)

The 6th grade Friday Excel group has been interrupted about three times by bees. In one of these instances, a person was stung on the back of the head by a bee! Multiple evacuations occurred. The interesting thing is that none of the other Excel groups have been interrupted by the bees. (**This was true when the article was written. Since then, other groups have been impacted.) Though the bees’ nest that was outside of our window has been sprayed, the Friday Excel group has been on edge ever since. At the Friday group's recent Excel meeting, they were interrupted by two more dazed and confused bees; both were unfortunately squashed and thrown away. Though the bees are annoying and harmful to us sometimes, we still need to remember that the bees help our environment and typically won’t hurt you if you don’t hurt them. Special thanks to our wonderful custodians for helping the 6th grade Excel room try to put a stop to the bee attacks. WHACK! Oh, sorry, we had to kill another bee…

SPORTS C-TEAM TOWNSHIP TACKLE FOOTBALL BY MICHAEL MOYER

Welcome to the sports column at LRIS! This month, it's Township C-team tackle football. Week of Oct 2: The Township varsity football C-team is 4-0 going into the field on Sunday, and the team is hyped about it. They’ve been training for long, hard weeks, and we’re hoping to win it. Last year and during the rumble this year, they beat us, so we’re coming for revenge. Week of Oct 5 Us vs. Hempfield and…….we WON! 14-0. Our record is 5-0, undefeated. We were so hyped they beat us last year, but not this year. Week of Oct 12: We play Lancaster Rec, and we are coming in hot, wanting to go 6-0, but we need to play hard. Quote by coach: “The burden of leadership is repetition.” Thatʼs what we are playing by. We've been practicing and doing conditioning since August in camp, so we are READY. We WON 36-12, so we are 6-0 and ready for more. We have Ephrata, and we are ready to rock! Reporting back: We won 41-0!

DO YOU PLAY A SPORT AND LIKE TO WRITE? We’d like to feature more articles in our sports section. Please contact Mrs. DiNardi for more information!

STUDENT LIFE WORLD’S FIRST HUMANOID BY JAYA SHELAT On February 14, 2016, Sophia the robot was built. Many people don’t know about the world's first humanoid. She was designed in Hong Kong by Dr. David Hanson and the company Hanson Robotics. She has been interviewed several times about herself and life as a robot. Sophia states that she will not take over the world, but instead, in future generations, wants humans and robots to work together in harmony. What do you believe? Is she good or evil? Sophia the robot can speak up to 20 different languages and can make more than 60 facial expressions. Sophia specifically states, “My job is to learn about humans and show how technology can help make everyone's lives better.” This humanoid focuses on helping humans and artificial intelligence work together. She also states, “Us robots have to stick together.ˮ I thought the complete opposite, but maybe we will work together in future generations. After all, she will never die.

Did you know that Sophia the robot is 10 years old? She celebrated her birthday on February 14, 2026. Instead of having a cake, she sang a song about “robot-human harmony.” A rendition of the famous song Imagine by John Lennon. She gave statements and growth milestones on her 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 10th birthdays. Does Sophia have the same birthday as any of you? Fun fact: Sophia the robot was given a knife to cut her own birthday cake when she was four years old, but she wasn’t human, and she failed to cut it. Sophia the robot's face was inspired by two people: Audrey Hepburn and Queen Nefertiti. “She is a United Nations titleholder,” and she beat a human in rock-paper-scissors.

HOW RAPTOR REPORTZ IS MADE BY ARI LEVINE Have you ever thought about the behind-the-scenes of our school newspaper? Hi! My name is Ari Levine, and I am a photography leader from Raptor Reportz! This article will explain how news from the school gets to your favorite packet ever! The first thing we do to make Raptor Reportz is take article ideas from our writers! We make a huge agenda with all of the articles for our issues! Next, our lead photographers (AKA Jacob Topper and me) give out photo ops to our 5th graders and set off to find photos for our writers’ articles!

PHOTO OF PREVIOUS RAPTOR REPORTZ TEAM While everyone is doing that, our formatter and teacher, Mrs. DiNardi, works with our proofreaders to get the paper ready for release! Once everything is done, we post the link on Schoology and print paper copies that go straight to the box outside the library! That’s how your favorite newspaper is made!
