Culture In this magazine we have described ideas and culture subject travels. The descriptions are based on below mentioned mission. Values of the school are aimed at preparing learners to manage themselves in a complex and ever-changing world. This is one of the reasons why every profile subject must be shaped in unity between learners and teachers - based on the theme for the trimester in question. It is our experience that the complexity and dynamicy of life is better experienced in a strong community and by being open towards others and the outside world. We are a school of the times, and activities stimulating a sense of community have to be meaningful to learners and teachers alike. The culture subjects bring together different learners and teachers in a unique development process. It is our experience that the guiding relationship established between learners and teachers during travels is the ultimate learning environment. We focus on individual development with respect for the community. Learners and teachers are very diverse and there will be many different priorities and targets during the year under the heading â€˜development and education in the committing communityâ€™. It is for this reason that we focus on creating a framework that will support these many different interests - and in extension the many new and exciting culture subjects and travels. This strategy also means that self-payment on culture subject travels may vary accordingly.

Subject ROFILE SUBJECTS AT RANUM EFTERSKOLE COLLEGE - IN SHORT: 1st trimester’s profile subjects are chosen prior to school start. Subject groups meet for the first time at the day for new learners in May. During the first period you will practice a set of skills which are to be used during your profile travel. The first period will also prepare you for the selection process before 2nd and 3rd trimesters - Teachers have planned a course that will introduce you to the concept of having a profile, how it is developed and how you are influential. 2nd trimester’s culture subject are chosen in the end of September. Learners and teachers have the opportunity of shaping new profile subjects. The theme for this period is world citizenship and globalisation, and it is through this focus that we will meet other cultures around the world. These profile subjects are called culture subjects and we will prepare an expedition in extension of these subjects, which are to be carried through in Jan/FeB 3rd trimester’s profile subjects are chosen in December.Learners and teachers can once again shape new subjects, and learners are at this stage very active and participatory. The goal is to use experiences from the 1st and 2nd trimesters’ profile subjects and combine interests, activities and cultural meetings. The theme is personal formation, and this process is often activated when our learners meet other cultures on their own terms and use the experiences gained from the first two profile subjects. How to choose 1. The culture subject has to be finally chosen at shop.ranumefterskole.dk where the 1. rate have to be paid 2. It will be possible to choose from the 17/9 3. Deadline choice and payment of rate 1 is sunday the 25/9 4. Deadline for payment of rate 2 is the 1/11

Self-payment: The self-payment may vary depending on culture subject. Please seeprice under each culture subject description.Selfpayment is to be paied at the shop no later than the 25th of September. If you change your mind or if you leave the school before our travels, you will not be reimbursed for the expenses (typically flight tickets). The different levels of self-payment on our culture subjects are a reflection of the schoolâ€™s values. We focus on forming unique communities of interest and create a space for the development of the individual in these communities based on their personal interests, dreams and goals. It is a unique foundation for development. Applying for individual supplementary subsidy: The school is in the position to support learners with a subsidy to the self-payment. . Learner and family will pay according to ability and it is a criteria that the learner in question has not received any subsidies before nor that the learnerâ€™s expenses are covered by any third parties. OBS: the subsidy is granted in rate 2. Deadling for applying the 16th of September. You will be notfied on the 23th of September

Culture subject: Safety on the culture travels: We follow recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and advice parents and learners to do the same. On our travels the staffing is high and we are often joined by extra assistants-youth guides, who are former learners and therefore familiar with our ways of travelling and for what purposes. A detailed safety procedure is completed for all travels, which will be available on the webpage of the school under ”Efterskolen”. Travel insurances: The school has taken out insurance policies as supplements to the yellow health insurance and the private insurances of the families. The luggage of the learners are not covered by these insurances. The school offers a ”Self-payment insurance”, which covers the selfpayment in case of sickness/accidents. As this is a collective pool, the compensation will represent a relative share of the total pool and the max. sum of the self-payment. It does not cover change of subjects, errors in passport info. missing visa or withdrawel from the school.The collective insurance is to be paid on the shop together with the 1st rate of the self-payment. The sum is 350DKK. Vaccinations, and medicine is not included. Learners are responsible for getting the recommended vaccinations before 1st of December, 2016. It may be an advantage to have it cleared by the autumn holidays. REMEMBER that your passport must be valid for more than 6 months after your return date. Animal Welfare Animal welfare and rehabilitation in Namibia About Namibia Namibia is located in the southwestern part of Africa, and it is an old German colony. The official language is English and the main religion is Christianity. It is among the safest countries in Africa to travel to. Namibia in January is warm and it can be quite rainy.

This course is for students who are passionate about working with animals and making a small difference. It will be hard work mixed with pleasure and great experiences.

NAMIBIA

The purpose of the trip The main purpose of the trip is to visit N/a a’n ku sê - Namibia Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a non-profit organization that among other things takes care of injured and orphaned animals in order to release them back into the wild. We will have 10 full days at the center and be a part of their team of volunteers and through that, we will be able to work with/experience:

Australia Cairns The study trip to Cairns in Northern region of Queensland, Australia will provide the students with the opportunity to interact with the indigenous people of Australia as well as the descendants of the English immigrants, learning about the consequences of the English colonial influence on the aboriginal inhabitants of Australia. They will also experience the unique ecology and wildlife of Australia with focus on the quickly disappearing Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests, where we will learn about the impact of human interference in the different ecological spheres found in Australia. The impact of the English Imperial period on the Aboriginal tribes: The Yirrganydji people was a group of Australian Aboriginals considered the original custodians of the coastal strip between Cairns and Port Douglas. In recent time, the different tribes have mixed but there is still a strong representation of aboriginals in the Cairns region. As a part of the cultural aspect we would like to examine the impact the arrival of the English had on the aboriginal societies and what it has done to them socially and economically over the years. We currently plan on establishing contacts with a local school and arrange for a couple of days of exchanging experiences - learning about the ongoing integration of the aboriginals and how they maintain contact to their own culture in the process. The wildlife and ecology of Australia: Australia is home to some of the most amazing and unique wildlife on the planet. Cairns itself is nestled inbetween amazing national parks and the marine wonder of the Great Barrier Reef. We would like to utilize this opportunity to look at the state of the ecology of Australia. Climate change and general human impact is changing not only the landscape we live in but also nature itself.

The Great Barrier Reef has become severely impacted by the climate changes and this could very well be the last call to see the reef in its original form. We plan on utilizing Fitzroy Island and the Marine World Platform on Moore Reef to explore the Great Barrier Reef and observe the changes occuring there. The Wooroonooran National Park and Kurunda State Forest is currently the main focus regarding the wildlife and ecology of mainland Australia, where we will examine state of the native wildlife, the impact of introduced species and how humans have changed the ecology of different ecospheres.

BrazilRio Tag med til Brasilien og arbejde med Tijuca national parken. Her finder man resterne af mata atlântica, kystregnskoven, der engang dækkede Brasiliens kyster. Tidligere blev skoven næsten udryddet for at gøre plads til kaffefarme og sukkerrørsplantager, men i dag værner man om byens regnskovsområder., ikoniske strande Copacabana, Ipanema og Leblon Kultur: med fokus på must see-turistattraktionerne Pão de Açúcar (Sukkertoppen) og Cristo Redentor (Kristus Frelseren). Vi vil også se om vi kan opleve Sambaen og måske kan vi lære noget inden vi tager afsted. Møde med lokale unge: Gennem danske kontakter vil vi etablere samarbejde og møder med lokale unge, evt. på en international skole. Vi ved ikke om det bliver muligt med privat indkvartering endnu, men vil forsøge. Kontraster mellem rige og fattige: Vi har hørt meget om favelas (slumområder), og måske kan vi få mulighed for at besøge et område for at opleve hvorledes folk lever og—overlever i disse områder. Kulturelle forskelligheder. Måske kan vi besøge Santa Theresa og Lapa er charmerende og livlige bydele, med mange kunstnere..

I forberedelserne til rejsen, skal vi også arbejde med at lave vores egne præsentationer af vvors liv, samt undersøge de temaer som vi vil fordybe os I på kulturrejsen. Vi vil også arbejde med hvordan vi bedst formidler vores erfaringer og oplevelser efter kulturrejsen. Et stort tema vil være sikkerhed på rejsen: Rio er berygtet for sin kriminalitet, og man skal bruge sin sunde fornuft, når man færdes i byen. Vi vil derfor alliere os med lokale, som kan hjælpe os med at færdes sikkert, og vi vil være påpasselig og ikke gå rundt alene i byen efter mørkets frembrud. Vi vil forsøge at få herboende brasilianere til at være gæstelærere i forberedelserne til rejsen, således at vi kan lære de almindelige omgangsformer, forberede os på kulturen og lære lidt sprog.

Cuba CCuba has a remarkable and unique culture and it is in many ways an obvious destination for Ranum Efterskole College to visit. Cuba, which is one of the West Indian islands, is located approximately 350 km. from Miami and was previously a Spanish colony. In 1898 the island was conquered by the USA, and it became a popular tourist destination during the 20th century - particularly due to the many opportunities for gambling. In 1959 there were more than 13 casinos on the island! The same year Fidel Castro and Che Guevara lead the successful rebellion against the American control - Cuba has since then been under a communist political system. The collaboration with the Soviet Union resulted in a trade embargo from the US - and today the effect of this is still visible in the streets and homes of the Cuban population. The fact that Cuba has been separated from the rest of the world since 1959 is in many ways, what makes Cuba so special and worth exploring. The culture there is very unique and particularly Cuban music and dancing are without comparison. African, Spanish and American culture mixed together in a wonderfully dynamic combination, from which especially salsa has become very popular around the world. In our preparations we will focus on the history of this country, learn some salsa moves and take Spanish lessons. We will prepare various outings and visits on Cuba. For the most part of our stay, we will stay in Havana, where we will also visit a school and a youth club that specializes in music and dancing. We will also take a dance class with

a local instructor. On this travel, we will also go to Trinidad, which is located on the south side of the island. Trinidad is, like the citycenter of Havana, listed on the UN world heritage list, because this city is one of the worldâ€™s best kept Spanish colonial cities from that period. From here, we will have an opportunity on horseback to see the beautiful area with mountains, sugar plantations and waterfalls. If you like music, dancing and collaborating with other young people from a culture very different from your own - then Cuba is the right choice!Â In preparing for this travel, we will also make our own presentations about life in Denmark and at efterskole, research themes that we may explore further on our travel and discuss how best to communicate our many experiences upon our return from Cuba.

Europe Roadtrip A journey, which will focus on history, society, culture and the culture meeting. We will visit London, Normandy and Paris, which are all places, which have been the centre of several of the most important historical events throughout the last 100 years. Events, which have shaped the history and todayâ€™s society. In this subject, we will work with the different destinations. We can walk through history through movies filmed in or about the destinations. The learners will work with individual projects for the expedition. The subject will focus on history and how our society have been formed by the historical events. We will focus on the Second World War in London and Normandy. In Normandy we will work on learning more about D-dag. The history is remarkable and exemplary, as many different nationalities and religioned cooperated in the war against the Nazis. Many of the soldiers who toke part in the war was not directly influenced, but chose to fight for the greater good. D-day was indirectly the reason for the breakdown of the Nazi regime and the victory of the free world.

EU ROPA

In London and Paris, we will examine the two cities different challenges throughout the war, but also on the challenges, which they meet today from terrorism. We will focus on the culture meeting in all the cities and get a perspective on how the past and the present influences the citizensâ€™ lives as we will try to cooperate with a European school.

Philippines Scuba The focus of the culture- and imagination course Philippine is: nature and culture. With these two areas in focus, the goal is for the learner to become an aware if their own role as interactive world citizen. They will learn that some of their hypothesisâ€™ are true, but they all so have to adjust some. The Philippines consists of 7.107 Islands, which is located in one of the worldâ€™s most beautiful archipelago. Several of the Philippine islands are still relative unknown as destination. Culture focus We will visit and cooperate with a local High School and the mutual culture exchange between the local Philippine learners and us is the most important part of the imagination process for the trip. On the

Nature focus The expedition to the Philippines is NOT a specific diving trip, however we will go diving, as for the learners to experience and be aware of the fragile environment around the Philippines. Through small projects, the learners will investigate how to limit the contamination of the water e.g. the problems with plastic. We will receive lectures from marine biologists, who will assist us when investigating data from samples, which we will collect from the water. Academic focus The culture subject classes will consist of relevant lecture by extern lectures. The theme could be; Contamination, Global warming, Self-esteem, Culture meeting etc. The classes will take grounds in the learners own projects, which will of cause be picked and chosen in cooperation with the teachers. Diving It would be preferably if the learners as a minimum is certifies as an Open Water Diver (OWD)

Philippines, the schoolâ€™s financial aids are very limited; therefore, we will be collecting and bringing gifts such as pens and paper for our friendship school.

Hawaii Hawaii was the 50th state of the United States in the 1950’es and it is a country comprised of 8 small islands. Hawaii is located in the middle of the Pacific—a bit North of equator. We will in classes and during our travel focus on Hawaiian culture by, among other things, establishing a collaboration with a local school on Oahu, establish contact to the local community over the internet and set up contact to local young people. Potential themes for this culture subject: Culture: Original population, relationship between rich and poor, tourism, development, modern society versus tradition. Nature: Marine-biology, relationship between man and nature, man/tourism influencing nature and environment? Water-sport: Surfing, diving, swimming We will work with historical and cultural development of Hawaii—from the first arrivals to the island to the acceptance to the United States and the influence of 2nd World War on Hawaii (Pearl Harbour). We will have our base on the island of Oahu, on which also the capital is located—Honolulu. We will experience all aspects of the local society, experience the nature of Hawaii—under and over the water—we can go diving, surfing or hiking. If you enjoy exploring cultures very different from your own and experience unique nature, then choose Hawaii!

Jamaica Join us for a musical tour through time and space to Jamaica, and experience a music culture that can be traced over the whole world. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean and was formerly a British colony. Most citizens originate from Africa, but there are also many Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Europeans, which is the reason why the music can be traced back to many different continents. Jamaica has, however, created its own sound, which is evident in genres such as ska, rocksteady, dub music and dancehall, but most famously reggae. We will in our classes work with the music style and music history-by playing, listening and reading. We will concentrate on culture, history and religion in order to understand the emergence of Jamaican music. On our expedition we will go out and experience the music, investigate what it means to the Jamaican people. We will find an opportunity to play forâ€“ and with Jamaican musicians, visit a Jamaican school in order to see to what extent music is part of their school days. After our return to Ranum, we will illustrate and communicate our new knowledge and competencies by playing a concert and give presentations on the Jamaican music culture and history. Jamaica is for you who finds music interesting, as well as history and culture. It is not important whether you can play an instrument or not, but an interest in Jamaica, cultural music and particularly reggae, is on the other hand, very important.

Japan Tokyo In this culture subject Japan we work with own contemplation areas. A contemplation area can be: manga drawing, sushi, samurais, cosplay, technology, history, natural disasters, art or the like, which you work independently with in the preparation period before our departure. Simultaneously we will, together, seek insight and inspiration for instance through a mini-language course, lectures, films, creative workshops and the like, so that we may be fully prepared for experiencing Japanese youth culture and the presence of history up close. The culture trip – maybe - through the world’s largest capital, visits to imperial palaces, past a mystical volcano and hot springs, ride a high speed train, make your own noodles at Japans noodle museum, directly in eye level with a Japanese school class that will share their dreams for the futureopportunities and trends for Japanese of equal age… but all this we will decide in unity! In our preparations for this trip, we will focus on the conditions in Japan i.e. culture, religion, history, nature and geography.

Individual project: As part of the culture subject, you must prepare a presentation of your work with the contemplation area and your experiences during our trip. This can be either presentation, article or film, which will be made during the travel. Research prior to our travel will function as the theoretical foundation for interviews and/or investigations on our travel. On our trip we will find information and documentation in the form of interviews, photos and videos for an article. We will on our return work with printing and virtual media in the form

China Partner school China is the third largest country in the world, with 5000 years of history – the world second largest economy. An expedition to China can give you many great experiences; we will walk across the Great Wall of China, visit the Forbidden City, China’s Imperial Palace through 500 years. We will visit one of the sweets animals in the world, the Panda in the zoo. Even though these places are high on tourist’s must-see lists, our trip is far from a touristic travel. We will start by visiting our Chines partner school, which is located in Shijiazhuang. The school have more than 6.000 learners and is as we a member of AFS. On the school we will be taught in professional Chinese calligraphy and painting, and see how the Chinese classes and test differentiates from ours. We will have activities with the Chinese learners, and learn some new Chinese games. During the visit, we will be staying with a local family, which is the perfect opportunity to see how a Chinese family lives. There will be time for you to go on small trips with the host family, such as a trip to the park or grocery shopping. The expedition will end in Beijing. We will take the high-speed train, which travels acroos the country with more than 300 km/h, where we will live in a hotel, which is located in Hutong. Hutong is an area with small streets and four wings houses, which encircles a small garden. In Beijing, it is possible to experience the traditional and modern china living side by side. Busy businessmen and large shopping centers to traditional breakfast and three wheel bikes. Moreover, we are luckily enough to come during the Chinese New Year!

CHIN A

China - Partner School is not only a destination for travels, but also an academic course, we will have a few times a week. You should not only pick this culture subject to go to China, but because you wish to learn the Chinese language and culture. The Chinese culture is both the past with Emperors, Kung Fu, silk and temples, and Chines medicine, family life, work, environment and politics. Some of the teaching will take place in the classroom, others could be cooking or a weekly training of Tai Chi. If you are fascinated of the East â€“ from Emperors to Skyscrapers, from cooking to Kung Fu and if you wish to get to know Chinese learners in your own age, see how a normal Chinese family lives, then you should pick this culture subject!

China KungFu school Kung-Fu school in China and a visit into one of the world’s oldest civilisations—Beijing. We will head towards Wudang Traditional Kung-Fu Academy in WudangShan, Hubei Province in China. We will have an extraordinary opportunity to spend 1 week with children, young people and adults who have all dedicated their lives to the art of Kung-Fu. Some of them are masters and will live the rest if their lives as such, while others will grow up in a world of Kung-Fu, qi-energy and Taoism and forward their teachings to others out in the world. This is a unique opportunity to experience a glimpse of this ancient Chinese traditions and wisdom! We will be staying at the school for 7 days and participate in training and activities. The Wudang mountains are primarily known for the martial arts—particularly Taiji, Qi-Gong and Taoism. While staying at the school, we will have lessons in Chinese language and we will participate in various activities with the students at the school and speak with the Kung-Fu Master Sifu Yuan Xiu Gang, a disciple from the holy temple in the Wudang Mountains—a mountain we will also climb to the top of. The Chinese have a long and grand cultural and historical heritage. We will explore this after our training I Wudang, when we head towards Beijing, as well as experience the contrasts between the new and the

Malaysia Venskabsskole Our two youth guides Rasmus and Bettina have both been in Malaysia and they love the country and the culture very much. Paired these two have much knowledge about the country, culture and ways of living. This travel will comprise of 1 week staying at the Hilla Community Centre School in Kuala Lumpur. Rasmus has previously worked at this school and collaboration has therefore already been established. The school is for refugee children and is located just outside Kuala Lumpurâ€” in Ampang. The relations to Ranum Efterskole College are evident as our logo is printed on their school clothing and our emblem is on their school wall. Learners who participate in this travel will be teamed up in threes and teach math, English, art or P.E. during our stay. We will all live at the school apartment, which is just a 5min walk away from the school. In the afternoon, we will have an opportunity to participate in other charitable activities, because the principal of the school is engaging in many different projects in the local community. These close contacts also means that we have a unique opportunity to experience culture, nature and people close up. In the weekend we will go into Kuala Lumpur. After that, the plan is to go out and experience the beautiful nature of Malaysia by doing a 3-day tour to Taman Negara, the largest national park in Vest-Malaysia. Nepal Himalaya This culture subject has been completed 3 times with great success. Nepal has a long tradition for mountaineering and hiking. We will walk on the paths of ancient and holy trekking routes. On this expedition, we will feel all the elements on our body. Through windy passes, where the air is noticeable thin, and mountains are covered by snow. We will look over the roof of the world, the Himalaya massif and see the sun rise/down over some of the worldâ€™s highest and most beautiful mountains. This yearâ€™s plan is to visit Lower Solu Khumbu an area south of Everest a place where tourists rarely comes. We will hike through colourful villages through, amazing forests of rhododendron, sleep in primitive teahouses and if all goes as planned, we will climb the Pikey Peak which is 4067 meters over sea level. We will get to experience the unique culture and Nepalese hospitality in the villages. Several places on the trip we will have an amazing view of the worlds larges mountains, and only few things in this world can make give the same awe as seeing an 8000 meter mountain top raise in the horizontal! In preparing for this travel, learners must investigate social, political, cultural and historical conditions in Nepal. Learners will in this relation be asked to prepare a presentation of a chosen theme for the rest of the group. The themes are categorised under 2 headings: culture and nature. Culture is focussing on Kathmandu and the area around this city. Nature is focussing on Chitwan National Park. We may incorporate a third destinationâ€”Pokara. The choice made in relation to the trek will influence where our final destination on this trip will be. Working with the physical aspect, such as training individually and in groups, will also be an element in this subject and in our preparations for this travel. The trip contains both physical activities such as backpacking up a mountain, opportunities for rafting and climbing or the like, and the experience of religions and cultures in Nepal. You will experience eating food cooked over a fire built on the clay floor, of the home of a family who may not even speak English! We will do a comparative project with young people from a Maori village and young people who attend a British/New Zealand boarding school in Christchurch. Peru This culture subject is about preparing ourselves for a long journey back to one of the oldest civilizations of the world, and experience its ties with modern society. We will explore the culture and nature of Peru, and gain an understanding of its past-how life was and how geography could be both an advantage and disadvantage in a primitive life. We will try to gain an insight into the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco and the holy valley, which is located approximately 3.500 m up in the Andes. Moreover, we will explore todayâ€™s culture of Peru and the differences existing in the country. We have close relations with the orphanage Elim in Cusco-the home to 30 children from the streets. Here we may assist with some teaching, games and social interaction. In our preparations for this trip, we will work with the social conditions in Peru, such as, culture, religion, history, nature and geography. After a fantastic trip last year, we head to South Africa again with Ranum Efterskole College. The tour will have a comprehensive focus where we want to work with South African culture, nature and cooperate with an international school in Cape Town. In these subjects, we will of course work with Apartheid, Nelson Mandela and South African society. It is important that students are curious, wanting to experience a very different culture and meet young people from another culture and form new communities. Therefore, our work on the trip will also focus on the social community of the team, so learners learn to take responsibility for each other and engage in the journey as a joint project. In our preparations to this culture subject we will do independent projects, which we will use in the presentation of Ranum and Denmark in the schools we will visit in South Africa. USA High School Santa Cruz, California High school exchange with Pacific Collegiate School and Kirby Prep School in Santa Cruz, Californiaâ€”for everyone with an interest in English language and American culture. 14 days. In collaboration with PCS and Kirby, a unique high school stay is planned, in Santa Cruz county by the Monterey-bay in California-south of San Francisco. The target is, to learn about American culture and language, but also to meet young high school learners from all social classes and learn about high school life in the US. You will be accommodated by local family, where you will follow the familyâ€™s teenager to high school. You must expect to present yourself and Denmark the first day at high school-a presentation planned in detail before we depart for the US. Subject knowledge: There is a great focus on the subject knowledge during this trip, and it is expected that you can understand and speak English well enough to keep up with teaching in high school-and that you are interested in this programme, and therefore will participate fully-also in contacting other young people and companies. If you are taking Spanish lessons here at Ranum Efterskole College, you may have the opportunity to be accommodated by a bilingual (Spanish) family. USA Miami In collaboration with the Danish consul in Miami, a unique and exciting study trip is planned to Miami. The target is to learn about American culture and language, as well as to meet Danish immigrants and expatriates, who will talk about their experiences of living and working in the US. We will also visit companies, do interview and take pictures to be used in your OSO-assignment subsequently. We have a network of companies with relation to Denmark and Scandinavia. This way, our learners will gain an insight into what it means to work abroad and incorporate this aspect into their assignments. MAST Academy We had the pleasure last year of visiting this prestigious school for the second time. It is located on the Rickenbacker Causeway, a beautiful spot with great views of the city, and specialises in Marine science and activities. This year, as well as visiting the school, we hope to attend one of their basketball games, so we can provide some Danish support for our American friends. We will also be inviting some of the students from the academy on a bowling â€?dateâ€? to allow more time for talking and discussions about the differences between the culture in Denmark and in the U.S.A.

South Beach/ Little Havana These two iconic places in Miami are a must visit; South Beach for the skyline and the many films and TV series that have used this glamorous location as a backdrop. Little Havana on the other hand, is a Cuban community located in the heart of Miami - and is a centre of multicultural activity. Though there is not much to do there other than walk around and talk to some of the residents, it is still a fascinating place and well worth adding to our itinerary. Everglades Tour This year we hope to add another wildlife element to the trip by exploring the Everglades by bicycle/tram. Understanding the things that make Florida a unique part of the United States is important, and the wildlife that can be found here plays a large part of that. Seminole Village The original inhabitants of Florida were the Seminole Okalee Indians, and this visit will enlighten the students on what life was like in Florida before the colonisation of America. We hope that the students will ask lots of questions about the cultural norms of the native Indians. It is also located right next to the Hard Rock Cafe, which is a possible dinner destination depending of course on the price. Courtroom Visit The legal system in the United states is very different to the one in Denmark, it is in fact it is different to most countries in the EU. We are lucky enough to know the Honorary Danish Consulate in Miami, Jon Rosenthal, who grants us access to a real courtroom. The students may sit and watch the processes of the law being carried in the United States, and afterwards can attend a question and answer session with Jon.

Key West is the southernmost island located on the long stretch of islands to the south of Miami known as the Florida Keys. Our long trip down there will be broken up a stop at a beautiful beach for a picnic and perhaps some snorkelling. We will spend some time in the town, find some dinner and look at the classic American architecture-there is also a possibility that we will spend the night here, though this is yet to be confirmed.

U.S. Virgin Islands In the center of the Caribbean archipelago the three small islands St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, also known in Denmark as “The Danish West Indian Islands” and in the rest of the world U.S. Virgin Island. The islands is a cultural destination with a unique part in the Danish history. From the colonial times stormy legends to the story about the slaves oppression to their final rebellion. All these stories mixed with the Caribbean atmosphere, colourful modern culture and long tropical beach, will make this excursion an experience for life. The former Danish islands in the middle of the Caribbean, have every thing which we dream of on a cold winter day; rainforest, beautiful sunsets, culinary experiences, white sand beaches and a clear blue sea. We will tour the islands and visit the old sugar mills, museums that tell the story of the Danish glory days, colonization and decay. We will explore towns with names such as Christiansted & Charlotte Amalie and visit local schools that can tells us about the life as a youth on the islands. The Ocene around the islands is no less than amazing, and we will take great advantage of this fact when we snorkel, sail, SUP’s and get in contact with the amazing animal life. On our journey around the islands we will visit the rainforest and the beautiful countryside with all sorts of colourful and exotic flours. We will experience all this will being included in the local atmosphere colourful garments and dancing to the kalypso rythems in the streets. We will talk about; the sale of the virgin islands to the Americans and how the change of nationality and language affected the local population, what do the locals think of the danes today and should we be obligated to help them? Winter sportNorth Are you into exercise, physical training and skiing, and are you interested in Scandinavian culture, then winter sports in the North is the right choice for you! In order to get in shape and learn the correct techniques, we do quite a lot of exercise before we depart. A part of our training will be joint with other active/physical profile subjects. If there is snow, we will naturally take advantage of it. We will also learn how to roller ski and experience the joy of this kind of exercise, as well as try how skiing can be used to experience nature. The culture in the north is diverse, and we will therefore meet with young people from the area. We have also invited some of the AFS learners from Malaysia to join us, and they are amazing to experience snow and the cold with. Everyone can participate in skiing. We will make different team, and we will focus on the different levels of all participants. There will also be an opportunity to arrange joint excursions such as picnic on the mountain. In preparations for this trip, we will also focus on social interaction, activities in the snow and evening activities. Skiing in January is amazing, but also really cold. For this reason, it is also important that you have the right gear. It can be bought fairly cheap or it can be borrowed-it is definitely not essential to buy the most expensive or flashy gear!
