Halloween Spending in Nevada to Approach $190 Million Pumpkin Pets, Witches and Spider-Men Galore Nevadans are embracing the spooky spirit this fall, as 72 percent of adults plan to celebrate Halloween while spending $189.9 million on costumes, candy and other supplies for the festivities this year. Participants are projected to spend an average of $103.63 per person, slightly down from last year’s record of $108.24, according to the Retail Association of Nevada (RAN). Nationally, the spending is forecast to reach $11.6 billion, marking the second-highest total on record, according to survey data from the National Retail Federation (NRF). Costumes are the top spending category, with an expected outlay of $62.2 million. Not far behind are decorations and candy, totaling $61.5 million and $58.1 million, respectively. Consumers continue to hunt for bargains, with 37 percent of shoppers planning to shop at discount retailers—the highest share among shopping destinations. Other popular stops for Halloween gear include specialty Halloween and costume stores (33 percent), online retailers (33 percent), grocery stores (28 percent) and department stores (22 percent). When it comes to finding the perfect costume, Nevadans are turning to a variety of sources: 38 percent are seeking inspiration online, 28 percent are browsing retail or costume shops, and 20 percent are consulting family and friends for ideas. A whopping 76 percent of adults already have their costumes planned, with witches flying high as the top choice for adults, followed by vampires, cats and Batman. Thanks to the recent movie box office hit, Beetlejuice cracked the top 10 most-popular costumes. Among children, Spider-Man swings into the number one spot again, followed by ghosts, princesses, witches and superheroes. Even pets are getting in on the fun, with pumpkins, hot dogs, bats and ghosts topping the list of costumes for furry friends. www.RANNV.org 1 of 2
