HERE IS A GROWING CLOUD OF UNCERTAINTY HANGING over Nevada’s healthcare landscape. The source isn’t a new virus or a shortage of medicine, but rather a proposed staffing regulation from the Board of Pharmacy that threatens the very viability of our local pharmacies. If implemented, Nevada would become the only state in the nation to enforce such a rigid requirement. While the Board’s intent may be grounded in oversight, the practical reality is a “onesize-fits-all” mandate that ignores the basic mechanics of running a healthcare business. Currently, Nevada pharmacies fill approximately 34 million prescriptions annually, a figure that aligns with national norms. However, the Board’s staffing proposal is based on an “invented” number, one that lacks historical data or proof of efficacy. This regulation dictates an expansion of staff that far outpaces historical
Liz MacMenamin growth trends. The demand is particularly acute in Southern Nevada, where the required increase in personnel would be the largest in the state. The most glaring challenge is a basic matter of supply and demand. Even if pharmacies were eager to comply, Nevada simply does not have enough registered pharmacists to fulfill this new requirement. As it stands now, employment platforms show between 180 and 360 open positions for pharmacists and technicians. This new regulation could instantly add 250 more vacancies to that total. It remains unclear where the Board expects
pharmacies to “find” these professionals. In a market already facing limited excess capacity, these mandates don’t create jobs, they simply create empty storefronts and more headaches for patients. Pharmacies across the state are now forced to calculate a grim bottom line: can they afford to stay open? This isn’t just a business concern; it’s a patient care crisis.
