These bulls are then returned to the sale draft. All bulls must meet milestones and we remove those that don't meet our objectives.
2. All bulls run as one contemporary regardless of breed or age. All bulls are run together from weaning until sale, we can't afford to give speciality treatment to under performing bulls to get them up to speed. Therefore we expect real world performance out of our cattle and like everything in life given equal opportunity some will always out perform others.

INVITATION We welcome you to the Cream of the Crop Sale 2018 catalogue and would like to invite you to attend our sale on Tuesday 27th March at 12 noon. We have had a big year since the last sale and you will notice a few asthetIc changes only. We have changed our cattle stud name and we have moved properties. The management and breeding decisions of the cattle remain unchanged and we will continue to breed the cattle that our clients tell us they need and that do well in Southern Australia conditions. As with most breeders of cattle we are incredibly proud of what we produce however you as the consumer of our product have the final say. We invite your feedback on our cattle, in this case our offering of bulls and look forward to continuing to evolve our breeding program with the requirements of our customers. We acknowledge the individual breed attributes and we have summarised our breeding objectives of these below: Angus This breeding program continues to develop for us and the use of AI sires has really shone through in this sales Black bull draft. The history of this breed in Australia is extensive. Most cattle breeders are well aware of their attributes and we need to acknowledge the power of the Angus brand and the reputation it holds. Our breeding objectives are to maintain that of balance between carcase, maternal and longevity. Charolais The EBV’s on our Charolais bulls are among the best recorded in Australia for Fat, IMF and calving ease. Our breeding objectives are focused on producing terminal sires for MSA grassfed specifications. Our walking sire Paringa Rio Bravo D213 is in the Top 1% for Calving Ease Direct, Birthweight, Rib & Rump fat, IMF as well as Domestic and Export Indicies. Red Angus Breeding objectives for the Reds are similar to our Black Angus program, maintain the balance between carcase, maternal and longevity. We often get asked “how do we run 3 different breeds”. The answer to this is very simple……they are run as 1 enterprise. The bulls are all run as together, the cow herd is run together, the replacement heifer mob is run together and the commercial calves are run together. This way we can evaluate the true performance of our cattle against their peers regardless. A big thank you needs to go to all those who support us. BUY WITH CONFIDENCE service. • We guarantee the fertility of all bulls sold. Any claim on an animal must be made within 6 months of sale date and accompanied by a vet certificate. If the bull is at fault we will replace with a bull of the equal value or credit at the next bull sale, less the bulls’ salvage value. Delivery • Dobson Cattle will cover sea freight on all sale bulls travelling to King & Flinders Island and Melbourne. • We will endeavor to ensure a speedy delivery of your bulls after the sale. As these bulls are our pride and joy all due care is taken during this transit period, however buyers are responsible for the insurance of animals against injury or death from the fall of the hammer. Buyers may wish to insure their bull purchase with their own insurer. • If you are wishing express delivery of your bulls you would be encouraged to arrange your own carrier.
Performance Recording • Traits observed are: birth weight, 200, 400 day weights, scrotal measurement, EMA, IMF, fat and docility. • All bulls have been structurally assessed by accredited assessor, Roger Evans, using the BeefClass Structural Assessment criteria. Health & Nutrition • Herd carries a JBAS 6 status • Sale bulls have been ear notched and tested free of Pesti Virus. • All bulls have been semen tested. • All bulls have been structually assessed • Sale bulls have been drenched with Vetmec Injectable 4/3/18 and Copper, Cobalt & Selinum bolus 3/6/17. • Sale bulls have been vaccinated with Ultravac 5 in 1 and given their booster 4/3/18 • No bulls have had their feet trimmed Guarantee • Bulls will be sold as fertile and capable of natural
NOTICE TO BUYERS • All lots are sold subject to the Term & Conditions as attached at the back of this catalogue. • Inspections of cattle are available Sunday 25th March from 10.00am to 1.00pm, or by prior arrangement with Heath Dobson on mobile 0409 176 228. • All instructions are to be given in writing using the Buyers Instruction Slip at the back of this catalogue. • All due care is taken during the transit period of bulls purchased, however buyers are responsible for the insurance of animals against death or injury from the completion of the sale. • In the event of delivery being made or possession obtained by the purchaser prior to the payment of the purchase, money or any cheque given on account of same, the purchaser shall hold the stock as trustee only for the vendor. • Dobson Cattle retains all semen and marketing rights of all bulls sold unless by other arrangements made between the purchaser and the vendor. • If you require cattle to be transferred to a relevant breed society please indicate on buyers instruction slip. UNDERSTANDING ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBV’s)
(+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. Rump Fat: estimate of genetic differences among animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site on a standard 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. IMF%: estimate of genetic differences among animals in percentage intramuscular fat (marbling) in a 400kg carcase. EFFICIENCY TRAITS Net Feed Intake (NFI): estimate of the genetic differences between animals in efficiency. NFI is measured either post weaning (NFI-P), in young bulls and heifers, fed at around 300 days of age, or in steers fed at around 560 days of age (NFI- F). Lower, more negative (–ive) NFI EBVs are more favourable. TEMPERAMENT TRAITS Docility: estimate of genetic differences between animals in temperament. Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either "docile" or "restless"). Higher Docility EBVs are more favourable. $INDEX VALUES Angus Breeding: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow, joined in a typical commercial self-replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems. The index is particularly suited to commercial producers who sell progeny into different markets, or to seedstock producers supplying bulls to commercial clients who produce for a range of different production systems and market end points. Domestic: estimates th e genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade, with progeny finished using either grass, grass supplemented by grain or grain finishing systems. Heavy Grain: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting pasture grown steers with a 200 day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed high quality, highly marbled markets. Heavy Grass: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting pasture finished heavy steers. TRAITS OBSERVED Indicates the traits that have been recorded for a particular animal and are contributing to the EBVs that have been calculated. These will appear directly below the table displaying the animals EBVs. UNDERSTANDING ACCURACIES The accuracy associated with an EBV gives an indication of its reliability, and the likely extent of its possible change as more information becomes available. As more data becomes available on animals (or its progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of its EBVs for particular traits will increase. Accuracies are influenced by the heritability of traits and the genetic associations existing between them. For lowly heritable traits, more information is required to achieve a similar accuracy to that of highly heritable traits. Accuracies are expressed as percentages. The higher the percentage, the greater the chance that the EBV is a close estimate of the animal’s true genetic merit, and the less likelihood that the EBV will change as more information becomes available
CALVING EASE TRAITS Calving Ease (DIR): estimate of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their calves from 2 year old heifers to be born unassisted. FERTILITY TRAITS Days to Calving (DC): estimate of genetic differences among in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. Females with shorter DC EBVs tend to commence cycling earlier after calving and conceive earlier in the joining period. They also tend to attain puberty at a younger age as heifers. Lower, or more -ive, Days to Calving EBVs are more favourable. Scrotal Size: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. Increased scrotal size is associated with increased semen production in bulls, and earlier age at puberty of bull and heifer progeny. Larger, or more +ive, Scrotal Size EBVs are more favourable. GROWTH TRAITS 200-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 200 days of age. This is a measure of an animal’s early growth to weaning. It is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as vealers or weaners. 400-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 400 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as yearlings. 600-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in liveweight at 600 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders targeting the production of animals suited for heavy weight grass finished or grain fed market MATERNAL TRAITS Milk: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in milk production potential, expressed through variation in calf growth performance. Larger, more +ive, or moderate, Milk EBVs can be more favourable, depending on the environment. Mature Cow Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in cow weight at 5 years of age. CARCASE TRAITS Carcase Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in hot standard carcase weight at 750 days of age. Larger, more +ive, Carcase Weight EBVs are more favourable.
