AREA HISTORY The area surrounding the Running Spur Hunting Ranch is rich in history, as seen in the geology and fossils dating to roughly 45 to 85 million years ago, during the the Cretaceous Period to late Eocene. Fossilized plant and animal life are often found in sounding areas, and many areas are designated as national monuments for studies of these fossils. In 1862, gold was discovered on Whiskey Flat (roughly 46 miles from the ranch), and an influx of miners flooded into the region. Grant County was established in October 1864, consisting of parts of the old Wasco and Umatilla counties due to population growth. After the rush on gold, many turned to other natural resources in the area, and timber, agriculture, and ranching became economic drivers to the present day.
