LITTLE TEXAS SLOUGH
Rexburg, Idaho $875,000 36± Acres
INTRODUCTION First light here comes off the Teton front and finds the water before it finds the field. On a fall morning, a hundred ducks work the slow current while geese drop in over the cattails in twos and threes. That is an ordinary sunrise on Little Texas Slough. The property runs 36± acres on a tributary of the Henry’s Fork west of Rexburg. Most of it lies under pivot, level and productive, and cattle graze it today. The slough moves through the place at an unhurried pace with cattails standing thick along the banks, the sort of edge that holds birds and gives a hunter somewhere to disappear. The ground carries irrigation water rights. Much of it stays open through the winter after the rest of the valley has frozen, and in January, when open water is scarce, the birds find it. What sets this one apart is the company it keeps. A short distance north, the 961± acre Cartier Slough Wildlife Management Area holds the same river bottom. A few miles downstream, the Henry’s Fork meets the South Fork of the Snake below the Menan Buttes, two of the largest tuff cones in the world. Ducks and geese work this corridor from October through January. Trumpeter swans winter in the open water and stubble fields around the buttes. Whitetail use the same brush along the slough, moving at first and last light. The parcel can be split, and current county zoning allows for two homes. The ground is open and level; the north butte stands close to the west; and Rexburg is a short drive from schools, groceries, and a runway. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes, the upper Henry’s Fork, and the west gate of Yellowstone lie within an easy morning.

RECREATION HUNTING | WILDLIFE Ducks and geese trade this corridor from the October opener into January, and when the surrounding water locks up, the birds concentrate on what stays open. Mallards lead the harvest in Idaho, joined by wigeon, gadwall, teal, and goldeneye. Canada geese work the stubble. Whitetail hold in the brush along the water and move at first and last light. Trumpeter swans winter here in numbers and are protected in this part of the state, so know your target before the shot.

FISHING Water runs in every direction from here. Henry’s Fork is among the most storied dry fly rivers in the country, and the South Fork of the Snake joins it a few miles downstream, carrying rainbow, brown, and native cutthroat trout. The Teton River lies a short drive east, Island Park and the upper Henry’s Fork a short drive north. Public boat access is six miles away at Beaver Dick Park. On the property, Texas Slough is managed under Henry’s Fork tributary rules, catch and release from December through spring, and a six-trout limit the rest of the year.

AREA HISTORY This ground was made in a hurry. Roughly ten thousand years ago, magma rose into the cold water of the river that ran where the Menan Buttes stand today. The collision flashed the water to steam and shattered the lava into glass and ash, which welded into two cones rising eight hundred feet above the plain. They are among the largest tuff cones on earth and the only ones in the country born in freshwater. The river has run around them ever since. Human history is nearly as singular. Richard Leigh, an Englishman, the Bannock and Shoshone called Beaver Dick, trapped and guided this stretch of the Upper Snake in the closing days of the fur trade. He led the 1872 Hayden Survey through the Teton and Yellowstone country, and the party named Leigh Lake for him and Jenny Lake for his Shoshone wife. He built a ferry on the Henry’s Fork and let anyone cross free of charge. The public river access six miles downstream still carries his name. Grand Prismatic - Yellowstone National Park

LOCATION Rexburg populates the Upper Snake River Valley, where the Henry’s Fork comes down out of Island Park and spreads into farm country. Potatoes, grain, and hay have worked this ground for more than a century, and the valley still runs on them. The town is the seat of Madison County and home to Brigham Young University-Idaho, whose twenty thousand students give a community of forty thousand a hospital, an airport, and a calendar of its own. Madison County was the fastestgrowing county in Idaho at the last census. Yellowstone and the Tetons lie about eighty miles out in either direction.
