AREA HISTORY Historic Mining Country Gold-mining history runs deep in the mountains surrounding the property. The historic Sanger Mine lies next to the property and was one of the most significant operations in the Eagle Creek Mining District. Mining activity here dates to the 1860s, with the Sanger historically recognized as the district’s largest gold producer. Historic 1898 mapping also indicates that a portion of the ditch system supplying the Sparta mining district likely crossed the property through the Goose Creek country. Built largely by Chinese laborers, this remarkable system carried water from the Eagle Creek drainage toward the mines around Sparta using miles of hand-dug ditches, diversions and flumes. GET TING THERE From Baker City, travel approximately 22.5 miles east on Oregon Highway 86. Turn left onto Sparta Lane and continue approximately 5 miles. Turn left onto East Eagle Creek Road and travel approximately 1.31 miles to Five Corners. At Five Corners, turn left onto National Forest Road 70 toward Balm Creek Reservoir and continue approximately 8.58 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 355 and travel approximately 1.2 miles to the property. Best access is through Sparta. Property is shown by appointment only.
