IMPROVEMENTS The custom 5,800± square foot home was completed in 2001 over nearly two years of work. Cabinetry and solid wood doors were built onsite; tongue-and-groove pine runs throughout the interior; Oakley stone over radiant heat covers the main level, with radiant heat above and central air throughout. HUNTING | WILDLIFE The ranch sits in Unit 50 of the Pioneer Zone, inside subunit 50-1, and it has a controlled either-sex elk hunt in October, muzzleloader only. General elk seasons run alongside it, with archery for any elk from August 30 through September 30. Deer carry two general tags. The Regular Deer Tag covers mule deer and whitetail, and a separate Whitetail Deer Tag runs either sex, any weapon, unit-wide. Moose live in the cottonwood bottoms year-round. Pronghorn hold the valley floor, where the archery antelope hunt carries an unlimited quota rather than a capped draw.

FISHING The Lost River Slam is seven wild species in a single day: rainbow, westslope cutthroat, Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat, cutt-bow, brook trout, grayling, and mountain whitefish. Few drainages in the West hold all seven. This is the upper river, above Mackay Reservoir, and separate from the tailwater below it. For a freestone stream, it carries an unusual density of aquatic insects, and the dry fly fishing reflects that. Both banks are deeded through the ranch, and Nielsen Ditch holds water beside the river through most of the year.

AREA HISTORY On October 28, 1983, the largest earthquake in Idaho’s recorded history struck about 19 miles from here. The Lost River Fault let go beneath Borah Peak, dropping the valley floor and lifting the range, moving the two apart by nearly 14 feet in places. Borah gained elevation that morning. The Big Lost ran at double its normal flow for six months afterward, and Old Faithful changed its schedule. The scarp is still visible along the base of the range.
