Pueblo County’s rich history is intrinsically linked to its position along the Arkansas River, a critical waterway that shaped early settlement and economic growth. The area was historically home to various Indigenous peoples, including the Ute and Cheyenne, who utilized its resources. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pueblo emerged as a significant industrial center, particularly known for steel production through the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. This industrial backbone complemented a thriving agricultural and ranching economy, sustained by the fertile river valleys and expansive plains. Smaller communities, such as the former rail stop of Swallows, facilitated regional commerce and transportation, connecting agricultural output with larger markets. The county’s development reflects a blend of natural resource utilization and industrial enterprise.

Beyond the local recreational options near the ranch, the historic city of Cañon City, about 35 miles to the west, offers additional opportunities for recreation on the Arkansas River, including whitewater rafting and fishing, as well as access to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park.
