A MESSAGE FROM
THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members – With Spring upon us we’re hoping that we can finally put the Winter season behind and eagerly anticipate the approaching warmer weather, longer days and the approach of the Summer months. Our golf season is now underway, with the golf course having woken up from its winter dormancy. We are excited to introduce a new fleet of superior and enhanced Clubcar golf-carts, featuring the latest craze in the industry – the Greg Norman Visage Shark Experience! Please swing by and try them out! We remain committed to building on the success and quality conditions that we experienced during the 2018 season and we hope that you’ll partake and enjoy the many golf events and tournaments as well as new activities which will be available this golf season.

Our Wine Dinner series are starting on Thursday, April 25th featuring the renowned Darioush Vineyards, which has already sold-out so far in advance, but not to worry, many other wine dinners are lined-up for the year. It is also with mixed feelings that on Wednesday, April 24th we will be saying our farewells to one of our dearest and longest serving staff members at the Club – Muriel Chapman – who will be retiring after 25 years of exemplary service at the age of 92. We hope you can join us to celebrate Muriel and share our gratitude and appreciation with her.
While our Paddle season is now winding down, we are excited to launch Pickleball at our Club. The game is typically played only during the summer months and please stay tuned for upcoming additional information. Hello RG&CC Members! It looks like Spring is finally here– yay! Now that the weather is warming up we can look forward a great Spring and enjoying everything our beloved Club has to offer! We have some great events to look forward to in the upcoming months. As always, our social calendar is filled with many exciting events beginning with our ever popular and already sold out, Wine Tasting Series on April 25th! We are excited to host our Ladies Night Out in May at our beautiful Ceremony Area! Believe it or not, Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner and is always a busy time here at the Club and this year will be no different. As we welcome the official start of summer, the pool & beach are sure to be your favorite hot spot and we have a new addition to the beach we are excited to introduce to you as the summer gets closer! Between yoga, our new and improved happy hour in the Lakeside Bar, Clambakes and BBQs, your Club will have all the necessities to kick off the season right!

With the first quarter of the year behind us, we welcome the season of rosé, bright foods, and of course- sandals! Our wine selections are always expanding to meet and exceed your palate expectations, incorporating new selections in events such as our upcoming Ladies Night Out on May 15th and our Wine Locker Tasting event on May 9th. Chef Jim Burnett and Sous Ryan Walsh will continually incorporate seasonal ingredients into entrees and appetizers in the Grille and then by the Pool come Memorial Day Weekend. Our thriving Lakeside Bar will be booming for many upcoming weekends beginning with the Masters’ weekend in April, featuring our best touch of “southern hospitality” in drink and food alike. Memorial Day weekend is certainly not too far off either, so make sure those swim trunks are set to go as we start off with our Friday Night Tiki Bar on the Beach and end with the member-complimentary Memorial Day BBQ on Monday. Of course, not only will the Pool have its share of thriving offerings, but as will the Beverage Cart on the course starting in April on the weekends and Wednesday-Sunday after Memorial Day. Each season, we strive to enhance the features present here at Ramsey Golf & Country Club to better them for our sustaining membership and guests alike. We will begin to bloom this year with our outdoor events from patio gatherings, cocktails on the beach to beers out on the course while also re-envisioning our menu offerings and keeping up on new spirits indoors as well. It looks like winter is finally behind us and warmer days are on the horizon! As the weather warms up and the days get longer, I invite you to take a walk around our Club grounds and admire all the beautiful spaces we have to offer. One of them being our Abbey Patio with its new outdoor furniture, including high-top and low-top seating, couches, a beverage bar and a fire-pit. It is the perfect location for any event whether it be in the warmer months or the fall! With June and July right around the corner, and the fall with its beautiful foliage not so far away our catering business is busier than ever as we prepare for countless graduations, retirement and sports awards dinners, birthday and anniversary celebrations, showers and most notably, our award winning weddings. If you or someone you know is planning an event, be sure to reach out to me directly. TO THE FAIRWAYS Welcome to the 2019 Golf Season! The 2019 golf tournament groups are available for open registration on the member website. Please remember these groups require golf membership first. Your member account will be billed for the entry fee by the end of April. We encourage all members to regularly check the Club website, especially the golf calendar for all upcoming golf events and tournaments. Once again no invitations are required. To register you can simply click on the event on the calendar.
FROM THE ROUGH While April showers may bring May flowers, we’ve had all the precipitation that we need and are certainly hoping for an early and dry Spring and Summer to maximize your golfing enjoyment out on the course. Building on the level of conditioning that we achieved last season, my team of Greenskeepers and I are already proactively working on all areas of our golf course to ensure top rated conditions on an everconsistent basis. While our Bunker Renovation program has been completed last year to much acclaim, we are continuing with all maintenance as well as upgrading some of the play areas out on the course, for example:
New tee-boxes on #4, #6, #8 and #12. With additional work being done to the back of #4, as well as potentially the floating tee-box on #14 Drainage improvements have already been completed on #1 and #10 We will be introducing new yardage markers on all Par-3s as well as new “drop-zones” will be created. We’ve also proactively pruned and trimmed tree canopies to better enhance views, play experience as well as improving airflow and sunlight access. While the above are just a few highlights, our work is never ending and my team and I remain fully committed, with the continuous support of our Greens Committee to provide you with the best playing conditions that you have come to expect and appreciate!

Generally, registration opens up approximately one month prior to the event date. Remember, your past registration does not automatically renew, therefore you have to rejoin the golf group before you register for an event. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us in the golf shop at 201-327-3877, 2019 proves to be a great year in the Golf Shop with dozens of demo clubs and fitting systems available in Callaway, TaylorMade and Ping. We encourage you to try some wonderful 2019 products. We will also be featuring new Travis Mathew men’s apparel along with Under Armour, MV Sport and Greg Norman Collection available for men and women. From the 70’s
The 70’s as a whole began somewhat turbulent at times with college protests, the Vietnam War and Watergate however, we had some very good times as well. One of them being The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and the advent of the VCR/VHS taping system we could now record the show as well! We had Apollo moon landings and caring about our planet with the beginning of Earth Day. We also had great music from artists such as Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles, Deep Purple and who can forget the Bee Gees! For Ramsey Golf & Country Club, the 70’s were more or less a very tranquil period of time. Around 1975 most of the houses had already been built in the club with just a few lots available. Growing up in Ramsey and especially in the Club was a very special and wonderful time.
The Clubhouse Around 1969 to1970 RGCC started the credit card system for members complete with dues and minimums. Our dues have historically been kept much lower due to the fact that we are also open to the public for dining as well as wedding receptions, baby showers, town events and more! Of course we still had the original club house with our “Cheers Bar”, Ballroom dancing and music preformed by our very own “Clubsters” band. We had seasonal events, parties for the kids, Christmas sing-alongs and costume parties where the kids would be allowed to help their parents decorate the club. We also had two families in the club during the holiday season that would put out paper bags with candles on their front lawns for decoration which paved the way for the current beloved Luminaries tradition in our club.
The Beach The seventies set the tone for fun at the beach. The sunfish sailboats patrolled the lake as the kids ran up and down the beach to play. We would jump off the docks, dive off the high dive and slide down into the lake to swim all day. The lifeguards would teach the kids to swim and we had to be able to swim from one end of the dock to the other in order to secure our swimmers badges! At the end of a long day of swimming and playing we would run up to the beach shack for refreshments and the favorite frozen Milky Way bar.
Golf As for golf, we had the best nine hole golf course ever, which was not too long but oh so tight. Around 1972, RGCC had the opportunity to obtain a significant amount of property in Allendale and Ramsey to expand and develop the golf course from 9 to 18 holes. It was said that because of raising tax rates due to the new sewer system in the town of Ramsey, RGCC membership voted down the acquisition by a 3-2 margin. We had another chance to pick up this land however, with 2 days left on the option, Rockland Electric purchased a good portion of the property to build an electric sub station which stands along side our 4th tee today. There were many events such as the member/member, husband/wife, ladies invitational as well as men’s and women’s flights and championships, most of which we still have today! As previously mentioned, championships were match play at the time up until 1979 when we switched to medal play.
Golf Continued Also in 1972 we were introduced to our new golf professional, George Sauer. George was a true professional with a great personality and was instrumental in helping put together RGCC‘s first ever golf manual. As a good friend, George stayed with us for over 16 years. He later moved on and became president of the New Jersey State Golf Association. During this time, a house off hole #7 which today is hole #14 was the home of Doc Landauer. A physician and great friend of the club, Doc for years was the only member with a golf cart for personal reasons. His wife Mary, won 10 club championships! Some members to this day fondly call #14, the Landauer hole.
Paddle Tennis In or around 1979, RGCC was first introduced to Platform Tennis, commonly known as Paddle Tennis, and we built our first paddle tennis court. Paddle tennis became such a popular activity in the club that we had to build an additional 2 courts! We now have 3 courts total and the sport is still thriving!
RGCC Members Memories We asked our contributing members why they first moved into Ramsey Golf & Country Club and what some of their favorite memories were. Here are some of their responses: * I wanted a house on the golf course because it was so beautiful here. I just instantly wanted to live here. * We had a real estate agent who recommended RGCC and then, once we saw it, we just wanted to move in here. * We moved from Chicago to RGCC because friends raved about Ramsey! * My parents loved living here, this was always home. * Our parents were with a real estate agent and they stopped in at the club for lunch. After lunch they told the real estate agent this is where we want to be, please find us a house in the Club. * I’ve traveled all over the world, but the best place I’ve ever been is RGCC! * I call RGCC: Grand old Americana! * A great place to raise a family. I love to see the children run around and play. * We’re all community here and the staff is family as well! * We grew up here - played golf, kickball, dodgeball, frisbee and went swimming - we always wanted to spend our time here. * What a wonderful place to live and such a great lifestyle. * You know, my sisters have a favorite movie in which the last line said is ....”Oh Auntie Em, there’s no place like home” and with RGCC, well there’s no place like home! We hope you have enjoyed reading and learning the history and memories of RGCC, the 70’s. In continuing the series our next session and article will focus on major changes at our club during the 80’s & 90’s. We will send out invitations to many club members to contribute to the memories of RGCC however, always remember if you would like to participate in the next session this coming June, please contact Maggie Johnson at the club.
