Creating a Legacy for Future Legends
For decades, Carolina student-athletes have created legendary moments – in competition for the Tar Heels and later in life when they employ lessons learned in Chapel Hill to lead their communities. Those legendary moments began with an opportunity to attend the University of North Carolina. You can create your own legacy with an estate gift that will give future Tar Heel legends that very opportunity. With the ability to designate your gift to an area of importance to you (i.e., studentathlete scholarships, endowments for a specific sports program, unrestricted endowments, and more), you can make an estate gift that has an impact on future generations of Carolina studentathletes. Your gift would include you in Carolina Forever – the society of Rams Club members who have designated The Educational Foundation (aka, The Rams Club) as a beneficiary of an estate/planned gift.
The Carolina experience began for Ken Williams in 1969 when he found his way to Chapel Hill to pursue a graduate education in biostatistics. That passion for the Tar Heels became a family affair, as Ken recalls: “Upon marrying me, Cheryl became a devout Tar Heel too, and we have thoroughly enjoyed supporting Carolina Athletics ever since.” Ken and Cheryl have embraced Carolina’s 28-sport program with generous gifts in many areas – supporting the student-athlete scholarship endowment and facility projects for numerous sports endowments. An estate gift by the couple provides annual gifts to the sports endowments for Field Hockey, Volleyball, Softball, Football, and Men’s Basketball. Upon their passing, their estate will be split between the Scholarship Endowment and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Cheryl and I have seen first-hand the impact that competing in intercollegiate athletics can have on a young person,” notes Ken. “Sports offers life lessons – leadership, teamwork, discipline – that can help our student-athletes not only win games but enjoy lives as successful adults too. We hope an estate gift will allow the young men and women who represent Carolina in the years to come to learn those same life lessons from our incredible coaches, and to enjoy productive lives.”

WAYS TO GIVE
Tar Heel supporters have used a variety of gift vehicles to support Carolina student-athletes, including:
Appreciated Assets
OUTRIGHT GIFTS
Well-timed outright gifts of appreciated assets, such as publicly traded stock, closely held business interests, and real property, can help you avoid capital gains while achieving your philanthropic goals. IRA Charitable Rollovers (also known as Qualified Charitable Distributions or QCDs)
An IRA charitable rollover has several significant tax advantages. It allows donors who are at least 70½ to give up to $100,000 from their IRA to The Rams Club using pre-tax assets. To qualify, the transfer must go directly from your IRA to The Rams Club. If you do not itemize or are subject to charitable deduction limits, the IRA rollover still allows you to give in tax-advantaged ways. Gifts from your traditional IRA can count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD).
Will or Trust
BEQUESTS
A will or a living trust is a statement about what matters most in your life. By making a will or creating a living trust, you can ensure that your intentions are clearly expressed and that they will be followed by those administering your estate. By naming The Rams Club in your estate plans, you are including Carolina Athletics among those family, friends, and organizations that you hold most dear. The Rams Club can provide suggested bequest language for you to share with your advisors. You can give cash or specific property, a fixed amount, a percentage of your estate or a remainder interest with or without designations. Beneficiary Designations
Beneficiary designations control the ultimate disposition of many assets and are an easy way to structure charitable gifts. You can create your legacy with The Rams Club by naming us as a beneficiary of your retirement account, life insurance policy, brokerage account, bank account or other financial asset. Traditional Qualified Retirement Plans (QRP) are typically one of the most heavily taxed assets you have in your estate, even if your estate is not large enough to trigger a federal estate tax. Since taxes are neither paid on the account’s assets when it is earned nor as it grows, withdrawals from QRPs are subject to income tax to individuals regardless of who receives the funds. By leaving these plans to loved ones, the value and impact of your estate could be diminished. As a qualified charity, The Rams Club does not pay income tax on receipt of these assets. Listing The Rams Club as the beneficiary of a traditional retirement plan preserves the full value of this important asset, thus providing greater support for Carolina’s student-athletes. Informing The Rams Club of your bequest intentions greatly aids in long-range planning – and most importantly, allows for you to be thanked now for your generosity.
GIFTS THAT PAY INCOME
There are ways to meet your financial goals that may at times seem conflicting – such as managing investments, preparing for retirement, providing for loved ones, and giving to The Rams Club. A gift to Carolina in return for income enables you to make a significant impact while finding the right solution to your circumstance. These gifts provide you with a new and diversified income stream while providing a secure future for Carolina Athletics. When the payments end, the remaining amount is used by Carolina Athletics in the manner you choose. There are several ways to donate discretionary cash, highly appreciated securities, and other assets to: • obtain life income. • obtain a current tax deduction. • benefit Carolina Athletics in the future.
Note: Both fixed and variable income arrangements are possible as the donor chooses. The best arrangement will depend on assets and family financial circumstances. Planning often revolves around a particular asset with high appreciation that is subject to capital gains taxes. Gift vehicles include charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts.

Evelyn Lloyd has been a Rams Club member for more than 50 years – a relationship for this Hillsborough native that started with her father. When it came time for Evelyn to think about her estate plans, she had a conversation with her father to discuss the people and organizations that mattered the most to their family. Carolina was a top priority on both of their lists. Evelyn’s estate plans were in place for many years before she shared her intentions with Ken Mack at The Rams Club. She worked with Ken and Carolina’s Office of Gift Planning to update her bequest language to clearly reflect where she wants her future charitable gifts to Carolina allocated and for what specific purposes. Her gift of an estate bequest to The Rams Club will support scholarships for student-athletes through the Scholarship Endowment Trust. This gift will CAROLINA FOREVER honor her father, her mother and the MEMBER family’s relationship with the University.
