DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS A grant from your donor-advised fund to The Rams Club allows you to make a lasting impact – ensuring that Carolina’s athletics programs continue to flourish and that opportunities for our student-athletes continue to be a priority. Future Gifts – In addition to current grants from your donor-advised fund, you may be able to direct a distribution of any funds remaining in your donor-advised fund after your lifetime to a charitable organization such as The Rams Club by naming The Rams Club as a beneficiary of all or a portion of any remaining funds.* If you choose to include The Rams Club as a beneficiary of your donor-advised fund, please share your plans with us so that The Rams Club understands how your future gift should be used to support Carolina Athletics’ and your priorities. Restrictions – The U.S. Pension Protection Act of 2006 established certain restrictions on grants from donor-advised funds. It is important to be aware of these restrictions before requesting your grant to The Rams Club to ensure that a donation through a donor-advised fund meets your needs and charitable intent. The restrictions that most often impact Rams Club donors are limitations on access to tickets, accepting other benefits or having access to other benefits, and certain pledge arrangements (new and existing). A donor’s annual membership gift cannot be satisfied with a grant from a donor-advised fund. Is a donor-advised fund gift right for you? The Rams Club and Carolina’s Office of Gift Planning can help you think through issues and planning opportunities for gifts from your donor-advised fund. Please contact us for a complimentary confidential discussion to learn more. *Rules regarding designation and use of value remaining in your donor-advised fund after your lifetime vary across sponsoring organizations. Please contact your donor-advised fund administrator to learn more about options specific to your donor-advised fund.
If you and/or your financial advisor would like more information on estate gift options or would like to learn more about estate planning strategies and the impact your gift could have on Carolina student-athletes, please contact Beth MacKethan in the Office of Gift Planning at 919.962.6628 or bmackethan@unc.edu.
Carolina Athletics holds a special place in the hearts of Alan and Lisa Caldwell, who both participated on athletics teams while attending UNC. Alan, who played football and ran track, and Lisa, a Morehead-Cain scholar and cheerleader, are longtime supporters of Tar Heel student-athletes through gifts to The Rams Club. “Giving back is part of our DNA,” says Alan. “It is important to us to give to the community and to Carolina.” Over the last decade, the Caldwells have established donor-advised funds to consolidate their charitable giving. Contributions to a donor-advised fund are tax deductible when funded. Donors may then make grants with those funds at any time regardless of the calendar year, allowing donors to quickly give as the need arises. “We are proud to be a Carolina family,” continues Alan. “Not only are we both graduates, but our adult children, Tyler and Lauren, followed in our UNC footsteps in football and cheerleading, respectively. The scholarships all four of us received from Carolina were so impactful in our lives. We are committed to paying it forward and to ensuring that UNC has the best student talent and the best student-athlete experience in the country for today and tomorrow.”
