Library Hours: Our Library will keep its normal hours of operation during JTerm for any students that are on campus and not in a class. The Library is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday.

Class Fees: Some JTerm courses have associated fees for the purchase of class materials. If you sign up for a course with an associated fee the business office will add those fees to your student account in FACTS this January.

A BLOCK: COURSE OFFERINGS

Anatomy and Physiology

Have you wondered about the human body and how it works? Are you ready to get your hands messy with dissections? If you said yes to either of those questions, Anatomy & Physiology sounds like the J term class for you! You will complete up to 3 different dissections including a cow's eye, sheep's heart, and a crayfish. We will also look at a 3D paper model of a cat. Dissection kits will be provided.

Are You Ready to Rock? Songwriting and Recording in our Ramona Records Studio

Former punks and new rockers alike...Are You Ready to Rock?!?! This course will give a range of brave studentswhether accomplished musicians or casual shower singersthe opportunity to learn the basics of writing and recording their own music. Country, hip hop, alternative: you can create whatever you want! This year, we are particularly focused on songwriting and the basics of recording using our Ramona Records studio. All skill levels are welcome, and we are especially interested in people who know how to play or sing some but haven't taken the leap into writing and recording.

Ballet and Jazz Technique

Ballet and Jazz Technique is a foundational course emphasizing the basics of both ballet and jazz skills. The course will include ballet barre work, fundamental elements of posture and positions with a focus on strengthening skills needed for dance. In addition, students will learn classic jazz movement including isolations, footwork, technical skills and segments of choreography. Attire for this class: Black or pink tights, leotard or tank top, ballet shoes or yoga socks.

Basic Badminton

Ready to play? Learn and review the skill you need to participate in the sport of Badminton. Engage in daily stretches and warm up exercises. Participate in daily Badminton challenges, both singles and doubles. Come prepared to work out! Comfortable and appropriate athletic attire and shoes required.

Culinary Adventures

Let's go on a food ADVENTURE! Make foods from Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia and more! Let's make snacks, main dishes, and pastries. Take your current knowledge and learn to refine your technique and presentation skills. Let’s eat the food we cook!

Class Fee: $ 40

Emergency Response 911: First Aid and CPR

The Adult/Infant First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for suddenly injured or ill persons. At the end of the session, there is an option for successful students to receive a certificate for Adult First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. This course is taught by a certified facilitator for the American Red Cross, and certified through the C.E.R.T. program of the LA Fire Department.

Class Fee: $40 for certification

Financial Literacy

This course provides a concise, practical introduction to key financial concepts, empowering students to make informed decisions, manage personal finances effectively, and avoid common financial pitfalls. This two-week course covers essential topics, including budgeting, saving strategies, understanding credit, investing, debt management, financial planning, insurance fundamentals, and taxes.

Film Studies: The Horror Film (during A and B blocks)

Do you like movies about monsters, madmen, and the macabre? Is horror your hobby, a guilty pleasure you analyze to understand its form and function? Do you see meaning in suspense, scares, and the strange? Join us in unraveling the rush and dread of the horror movie, a genre that is more than its unsettling features but a comment on our humanity and society. Possible PG-13 movie selections include Night of the Living Dead (1968), Beetlejuise (1988), The Sixth Sense (1999), The Others (2001), The Ring (2002), The Village (2004), I Am Legend (2007), Cloverfield (2008), The Visit (2015), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), A Quiet Place (2018), and Beetlejuise Beetlejuise (2024). Recommended for grades 10 – 12.

Get ready for Harvard Model Congress!

This intensive course equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel at the upcoming summit in San Francisco. Delve into legislative, judicial, and executive processes, examine compelling position papers, and explore key issues for this year's program. Open to 2026 trip enrollees and previous participants only.

Gourmet Lab: Science in the Kitchen

Are you hungry for science? Take on the role as both scientist and chef as you boil, bake, and toast your way into a better understanding of the science concepts involved with cooking. Rather than recipes, you will use lab equipment and procedures to make edible compounds both savory and sweet. At the end of class each day, you will get to enjoy your edible food items.

Medical Interpreting Course

Are you bilingual? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Spanish/English medical interpreter? Have you been asked to interpret for a family member and thought, how do I say that in Spanish? What’s the difference between interpreting and translating? Learn about the ethics interpreters have to follow and some of the medical terminology. Listen to real life stories of the emergency room, role play with your classmates and have fun learning about something you might just need to use in the future. You must speak Spanish or be in Spanish 3 or higher to enroll in this class.

MicroPress Express: A Zine Workshop

What's a zine? Pronounced "zeen," zines are DIY (do-ityourself) self-published booklets that can be reproduced on a copy machine & distributed, usually made by collaging text and art together to share personal stories and interests often underrepresented by mainstream media. Explore the world of zines and small press publishing and get hands-on with brainstorming, layout, design, and creative techniques. You can go full DIY or explore graphic design tools. By the end of the class, you’ll have your very own zine in hand ready to swap, share, and maybe even start your own series! Whether you're into poetry, comics, photography, flash fiction, music, gaming, or memes; the topics and themes are endless this is your chance to get creative, express yourself, and share your voice. No experience needed for this hands-on course. Class Fee: $10

SAT Math Prep

We will review the various math concepts to prepare you for the math section of the SAT. You will become familiar with the structure of the test, and learn effective test taking strategies and problem solving techniques. Practice exams will help you gauge your progress and identify areas for improvement. You will be able to go at your own pace and practice how to approach the problems within the given time. Math, we welcome you! You must be in Geometry or higher to enroll in this course.

Self Defense for Women!

Learn the basic strikes and advanced techniques of selfdefense with a 2nd degree, “Ramona alum” black belt that has 12 years of experience in martial arts. This course will cover how to defend yourself against common attacks such as punches, kicks, and wrist grabs and more aggressive assaults including bear hugs, and numerous positions of choking and pins. While we explore these situations each student will not only develop the physical skills of selfdefense, but also the mental strength, stamina, and awareness to carry themselves with confidence. There will be a warm-up with mild conditioning as well as a cool-down and stretching portion for each class. Athletic wear is required due to the amount of physical activity taking place, and be prepared to remove your shoes to allow for more flexibility and grounding.

Sociology of Youth Culture

How has the experience of youth changed over the decades? How has it remained the same? Did you know that there is such a thing as Youth Culture? From fashion, music, trends, language, and movements - let’s explore some of the defining characteristics of your culture and experience and those of generations before you. We will look at how youth culture has transformed and evolved over time and how youth have responded to the world around them. What makes your experience different from your parents’ and grandparents’ experiences? What are some of the elements of youth culture today? We’ll explore, observe, and analyze the place and prominence of youth today.

Practice Bookbinding

Play with bookbinding techniques and processes to make your own journal and then use it as you wish - personal diary, fiction collection, or to do lists - whatever you want! This year we will experiment with a case bound book. There is a class fee to cover construction and decorative supplies.

Coffee and Culture in Los Angeles

Coffee is a staple of cultural expression. Study the history of coffee bean production throughout the world and explore how coffee shops in LA have cultivated a fusion of distinct taste and cultural expressions within each coffee cup. Learn how tradition, culture and identity are formulaic to business entrepreneurship within the heart of LA.

Let's get crafty! This class will introduce beginners to crochet, and will also provide instruction for students who already know the basics and want to learn new stitches. Make blankets we can donate to newborns. Learn patterns for gifts and garments. (This class may be taken as for one block or two blocks, just during B block, or during B and C blocks)

Come and learn some basic hula steps to a lively upbeat rhythm of an ancient song. You will be taught how to coordinate hands and feet to put together a routine you can use anytime, anywhere for fun, for fitness, for relaxation, for de-stressing! Yes, hula serves all those purposes! Wear comfortable dance attire, yoga pants or shorts or regular shorts, and t-shirt. Bring water and a towel if you need one. We will be dancing barefoot so wear socks if you are sensitive to that.

Money Moves: Scholarships Made Simple (Seniors Only)

Applying for scholarships can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Think of it as an investment: every hour you spend applying can pay back hundreds or even thousands of dollars toward your college education. Scholarships are not only for students with perfect grades! Scholarship opportunities are available to reward leadership, service, creativity, resilience, and unique life experiences. This J-Term class will guide you step by step through the process of finding opportunities, staying organized, and submitting strong applications so you can maximize your chances of success.

Nursing: So you think you want to be a nurse?

Come learn what it takes to become a registered nurse and save lives from age 0 to 100+. Topics include career pathways, nursing concepts, types of nursing roles, patient care settings, introduction to nursing skills, qualities of a nurse, and so much more! Come learn from a Ramona Alum and Registered Nurse. This class is definitely for you if you are considering a career in nursing and healthcare after Ramona!

Open Art Studio

Robotics

Do you have an unfinished art project? Would you like time and space to create, that you just don't have at home? Do you want to use printing tools, light boxes, and easels? Bring your art project and supplies, set up a space, and create. Problem solving and feedback is available as requested. No evaluation, celebration only!

Calling Robotics Team Members! Let’s use this time to work on our robot! You will work as a team while completing various tasks: (1) Electrical: Wire the robot controls and sensors. (2) Programming: Lead in software development and program code for the robot. (3) Mechanical/Building: Design, construct, and maintain the robot's drive-train (4) CAD (Computer-Aided Design): Design the robot's structure, create CAD designs, assess feasibility of design choices, simulate motion, and analyze weight of robot. (5) Communications / Media: Update our web page, monitor the FIRST website and other social media. (6) Fundraising: Find sponsors and discover new ideas to raise funds. (This class may be taken for one block or two blocks, just during B block, or during both B and C blocks)

Students and the Chicano Movement

Did you know that students were a major driving force in the Chicano Movement? A movement which grew to include more than just Mexican Americans, students participated in farm worker strikes, led walkouts, and advocated for ethnic studies departments at universities. Discover the vital role students played in the Chicano movement, how they organized to make their voices heard, and how they have fought for equity for marginalized groups in society. In examining the origins of this movement, we will explore the powerful impact that students can effect on society and social movements when they use their voices!

Theatre Crew

This course is a hands-on introduction to the practical application of the technical side of theatre including what is involved in mounting and running of a production. Students will learn aspects of costuming, hair and make-up design, property construction and stage and house management.

Wizards and Magic

Step into a world of spells, broomsticks, and Halloween fun! Half our time will be spent exploring the magical universe of Harry Potter through games, crafts, trivia, and friendly house competitions. The other half will celebrate classic Halloween movies. Each day brings a mix of movie scene-watching, creative projects, silly challenges, and themed activities from making wands and potion jars to acting out famous scenes and playing wizarding games. It’s all about having fun, getting a little spooky, and enjoying the magic. Class Fee: $15

Coffee and Culture in Los Angeles

Coffee is a staple of cultural expression. Let’s Make Stuff With Paper

Learn the basics of 3-D models like architects do: Create paper models of famous structures from ancient and modern civilizations. Play with subtractive sculpture techniques using scratchboard! Create Celtic knots and untwist your soul in meditative illuminated manuscript illustrations. Explore modern hand lettering and calligraphy. Experiment with each kind of project or stick to the ones you want.

Museum Curator Workshop

For students who are interested in how artworks and historical artifacts are displayed to engage and inform others. Topics that we will explore include: documenting and cataloging objects, arranging objects and creating displays, creating meaning and messages with the objects, designing support material to help visitors interact with the exhibits, and leaving a plan for future exhibitions. This will be hands-on as the “Ramona Museum” is transformed by your work.

Mysteries of History

Step into a world of secrets, strange stories, and puzzling happenings! We’ll explore extraterrestrials, conspiracy theories, urban legends, and other curious phenomena from history. Each day is packed with games, crafts, challenges, and interactive investigations designed to spark your imagination, creativity, and sense of adventure. Fun, surprises, and a little bit of mystery magic!

Prayer, Meditation, & Movement

We will use our class time to learn and practice various prayer traditions as well as meditations. Join us if you want to look at prayer and meditation through breath work, walking, coloring, holy yoga, and more!

Class Fee: $10

Puzzles

Learn and play different logic, word, number and jigsaw puzzles. Puzzles offer significant emotional and cognitive benefits by strengthening memory; problem-solving; and visual-spatial skills. In addition, they reduce stress while providing a full-brain workout in a meditative, calm space.

"Swing Batta Batta, Swing!"

This is open to any and all students regardless of your Softball skill. We will run through fundamental drills to focus on a more accurate swing and we will work on conditioning the body for a power swing. Students will work individually and in pairs to complete the drills and will receive feedback to help them improve their swing. Be prepared to work out and have fun!

Comfortable and appropriate athletic attire and shoes are required.

We're Crafty

Do you need space and time to let your inner crafter shine? Join us and make a different craft each day including paper crafts, chenille stem animals, felt crafts, and more! By the end of the class you’ll have a nice set of creations made by you AND skills to continue crafting on your own.

Wild LA: Wilderness Survival and Backpacking Trip for Beginners

In America, the wilderness has been a place to find everything from danger (Little Red Riding Hood in “The Woods”) to adventure (“The mountains are calling and I must go.” - John Muir) to God (“[In nature]...I am part or particle of God.” - Emerson). Much of how we make sense of ourselves in America is rooted in Nature, both in our connection to it and our opposition to it: a thing to preserve, a thing to conquer, a thing to wonder at. In this course, students will learn how to build a fire, use a map and compass, and prepare for a backpacking trip, and they will combine this with an investigation into the history of Wild Los Angeles and the hotels and camps built up in the mountains above the city. This course will culminate in a backpacking trip later in the Spring.

Senior Internships

We value off-campus internships and the rich experiences they provide. If you are a 12th grader and have an off-campus internship opportunity that you would like to attend, you may choose to do that during JTerm. You will report to school for any AP classes you have in the morning, according to the AP class schedule, and then leave when your AP classes are done to attend your internship. A minimum of 15 hours per week are required for off-campus internships. Follow-up paperwork from both you, your parent, and your mentor will be required. Please see Mrs. Szymanski if you would like place in an internship during JTerm.
