MARCH 2026

Jay Seeley President, High Desert Region PCA president@highdesertpca.org

We’re always looking for new roads, paved or not, to a route you love – challenging, scenic or just plain fun h, please let me know.

The other thing we’re always on the lookout for is volunteers; like Porsches and grandchildren, you never can have too many. Volunteering is a great way to get more involved in the club and meet some really nice people and their cars. Whether you’re new to the High Desert Region, or celebrating your 45th PCA anniversary, raise your hand and help us out with a driving or social event, or volunteer to be an ambassador for a new member who has a similar vehicle. Or begin your campaign for one of the leadership positions in 2028; we need good people to keep the club moving forward!
Ever wanted to see all the upcoming club events for the year in one place so you can plan around them? A few pages further on, you’ll find the details and the link to the new YAAG calendar In the meantime, here are some save-the-date highlights of a few coming events: Audrey and Ken Moore have volunteered to host the annual picnic in late July; it’s open to all club members and their guests (last year we had more than 125 attend!), with a focus on celebrating our new members.
In early August, we’ll be hitting the trail with a drive for all you Cayenne and Macan pilots: Hack Heyward and Jeremy Williams will be leading our SUV’s down some roads less traveled. This should be a fun day tour for families on some beautiful forest roads in Central Oregon.
Mark Taylor, the club’s Membership Chair, is organizing an overnight trip to Mt. Angel in midSeptember for the annual Octoberfest celebration. It should be a beautiful drive over the Cascades, followed by some traditional German beers and brats. And what more appropriate way to get there than in a Porsche?
Did you participate in the Bavarian Adventure in 2024, the Cowboys and Indians tour last year, or register for an event that ended up being canceled? If so, you may have a credit that you can use toward future events or club merchandise To check, log on to the website and, under your name at the top right, click on your Profile Go to Histories at the bottom of the page and click on Payment/Credit History to see if you have any credits
Finally, unless winter arrives late in the high desert, the driving season is just around the corner and we’re all anxious to get back out there. …see you all on the road soon!
Cheers,
Jay

O W N S H I
by Ralph Anzellotti
In mid January, Linda and I did a road trip to Arizona and one stop was with Fred and Pat Nielsen who rented a condo in Carefree just outside of Scottsdale. Fred had set up a local meeting with Richard. Strahota, the Treasurer for PCA National. Richard had some cars that Fred was interested in seeing and told him I would be tagging along to take pictures and hopefully do an article for downshift.
Fred and I drove out to see Richard and his barn of Porsches while our wife’s went shopping in Scottsdale for things expensive. We had no clue what Porsches we would see in the “Barn”. I envisioned a faded red barn, dirt floor, with a few rare dusty Porsches parked next to a tractor and bales of hay. What we found was quite the opposite.

There were two toy barns full of Porsches

Richard Strahota and Fred Nielsen talking Porsche.

Richard was warm and easy going as he talked about his prized Porsches one by one. I tried to keep up writing down information about each car, there was so much to try to comprehend.
Richard had a rich knowledge about each hand picked car, the history, specifications, restorations, and fun facts, I was almost dizzy with all the Porsche knowledge that he had.
After we looked at all the Porsches in the toy barn, Richard asked if we were ready to see the rest of the cars? What? Where?
We walked several feet to the next toy barn and there were five more Porsches!
At this point I lost all control of taking notes and did my best to keep up with things. It seems Richard had meticulously picked each Porsche to add to his collection of very fine and rare cars.
Fred and I visited and talked Porsche for several hours and it was quite an educational showing of wonderful cars.
The following pages of photos will hopefully give you a Porsche fix for the next month or two!

1973 Carrera RS 1,500 cars were made
Holy Grail
“Called a dead guys car” because the owner has to die before it can be sold.

1968 Targa, Irish Green, Soft Back Window. Absolutely immaculate.

1992 Carrera RS, Rubystone Red, looks pinkish to me? Just stunning.

1956 Speedster, very red, very cool, where are the keys?

993 Super Cup, White, Roll Bar. Richard raced this car, I can only imagine how many cars tried to keep up with him behind the wheel.

1962 Super 90, Twin Back Grills, eye catching deep black, I imagined the top down cruising down the highway.

1964 C, 1900cc engine. understated gorgeous classic

911 Carrera T, 2018, Silver, PDK, yes please.

“1955 356 1500,, 16” wheels, Porsche Parade Winner, absolutely a pristine car.

914-6, six cylinder, black, rare find

GT3, 2009, take me home Blue Colbolt

Fred and I left the toy barns full of Porsches with stars in our eyes, such a superb collection.
Our wives were still shopping and knowing our resources were meager, we decided to drop by for a late lunch at In and Out burgers and reminisce about all the cool Porsches racing in our minds.
Life is good.
Thank you Richard!

This is the first HDR Social for 2026 and everyone enjoyed the Spring like weather. We had a reserved tent that kept us warm from the evening chill.
The Midtown Yacht Club featured food carts and draft beers, but was void of any ocean, harbor, yachts, or anything related to seafaring. Maybe it was low tide? I did see a few Pirates and wenches. After a few pints I heard fog horns, crashing waves, and smelled the sweet smell of salt air.

Stein did a great job coordinating the social event at this unique location and everyone enjoyed the Porsche vibes.

German Transaxle of America

Owners: Ken and Laurie Harvey

I have good news for owners of 356, 914, 912 and 911 air-cooled Porsches. German Transaxle of America now has the perfect setup to have your transaxle worked on in their shop. Historically, it was necessary to have your transaxle removed and brought in to Ken and staff at GTA but now you can deliver your pre-1990 P-car to GTA for all transaxle work. They will expertly remove the engine and transaxle, do the rebuild and return everything back to correct form.

I decided late last year to have GTA give my 1986 911 Carrera’s trans a good going over. I tend to want to address sure-to-come problems when everything is running well so I am not stuck somewhere with a broken down 911. My 915 transaxle was a little ‘notchy’ as many are and a few times I had a difficult time getting into reverse. So taking advantage of what I thought was going to be winter (!), I dropped my Carrera off at GTA the middle of January and picked it up a little over 3 weeks later. Once Ken had the trans broken down on his bench, he called to let me know I should drop by and see exactly what he was doing for the rebuild.
I have roughly 108K miles on the odometer. He explained by and large things looked pretty good-no major problems-but also pointed out where at some parts had been previously replaced. There were clear signs of w S l b i i h ft roller bearing and pinion roller bearing-insta inattentive mechanic needed to be corrected. Fort this oversight. Ken replaced the well-worn Pors bushing with new brass.

When I first visited GTA for an earlier Shoplight, Ken was working on another 915 trans. He let me know he thought this was a terrific piece of engineering (Porsche designed and built) and was made to last, if maintained properly, for a very long time. Proper maintenance on transaxles include regular changing of the gear oil. As I am guessing most of you air cooled owners know, changing the gear oil is a little tricky but certainly can be done at a home garage on a lift with a friend helping out. An extremely rewarding task and good for your car.
If any of you are like me and want to address probable transaxle issues before they arise, give the very knowledgeable Kateka at GTA a call to set up a meeting to discuss your specific needs.

By the way, it was near 60 degrees and sunny when I picked up my Carrera from GTA. 9 February 2026! I immediately shot up 97, exiting at Deschutes Market Road and ran it through its paces on those beautiful CO backroads. No break-in necessary as Ken had already done so.
And before leaving GTA, Ken advised in general not to downshift to first except at very low crawling speed or at a stop as going from second to first can place extra stress on the gearing. “Brakes are your friend,” he advised. Driving at speed, the shifting was a smooth as new. As a matter of fact my Carrera felt like a much different car and I certainly did not anticipate how significant a transaxle rebuild would be. But it is and the car felt terrific.

If you were a kid and got a puppy that was born on Christmas Day, what would you name the pup? Kris Kringle of course! That is just what Mark Taylor did.

Kris Kringle, the Minature American Austrialian Shepherd, born on Christmas day, now 8 years old. He is atrue Porsche dog. He rides in the back of Marks 2013 Metallic Agate Gray 911.1 Carrera S. Coupe (which is called the “Gray Ghost”.... Is there a holiday theme here?) “Kris Kringle can handle any curve on the road tucking his butt wedged between the two front seats”. That is a crack up on its own, once you visualize the backwards ride!
When Kris is not going on a Porsche ride, he is at the park, excitedly impressing all of the girl pups with his 4-color coat. Classic black, white, tan, and grey markings making him the distinctive “Merle Coat” at the dog park.
The important question is, next time, a Puppy or a Porsche? Mark replies, “Definitely a 911T, light weight with a manual transmission and all the handling goodies”. (I think he is definitely talking about a puppy, in Porsche language.)

Desch y g ement program taught with the aid of the SKIDCAR System. The SKIDCARframework attaches to the suspension of a vehicle to allow the front and rear tires to be lifted or lowered independently with a controller. The system allows drivers to experience the inclement driving conditions that cause a vehicle to lose traction in a safe and controlled learning environment. The course costs $100.00 and is available through Deschutes County Risk Management and sponsored by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.
Training includes one hour of classroom instruction followed by three hours of hands-on driving in the vehicle. The instructor will cover various techniques, including proper eye placement, acceleration, braking, steering, weight and energy management, as well as proper tire decisions and maintenance. Participants will learn the proper use of anti-lock braking systems and understand the differences between rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and four wheel drive systems, as well as Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. Participants will also learn about skid prevention, control and recovery.

$800 for 4 Michelin X-ICE Snow Tires 20" (For front narrow/rear wide staggered Porsche SUVs)
These Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires are basically brand new, with approximately 600 miles of winter driving on them. These tires cost about $1,700 for the set from Kendall. ($350 ea. for the fronts and $475 ea. for the rear tires) We just need to sell them to someone who can use them, and to get them out of our garage. They do not fit our new SUV. Tires were always stored in a warm space.
All 4 tires fit 20" rims:
2 tires are 265/45 R 20 for the front
2 tires are 295/40 R 20 for the rear
Tires are for Porsche Macan and Cayenne SUVs with wider tires on the back than the front, with Staggered 20" rim set-up (Also fits with SUV's by BMW, AMG, Lambo, and Mustang Mach-E)
