WANTED:

Do you live within travelling distance of Colchester?

Are you serious about working with, and/or helping to restore, an engine? Are you over 13 years old?

If you can answer YES to these questions read on. We have been asked by an engine owner if an Apprentice would be willing to help them to finish off the restoration work and then go with them when they are able to start rallying again – hopefully later this year. If you’re interested contact Kevin Munn for more information.

THE 2011 SAC MODEL

This year’s model competition is an animal from a set of gallopers I have given you a choice of the traditional horse, or a running cockerel.

There are pictures of these on the internet that you can look at for inspiration. Try www.carterssteamfair.co.uk. I will put some useful pictures on the SAC website to help you www ntet co uk/sac There is also a good photograph of a galloper on the back page of this issue.

As usual I have tried to keep it fairly simple, and if you bring your finished examples to Great Dorset Steam Fair I will have a section of galloper base for you to show them. Happy modelling!

Don’t forget…….read through the instructions first so that it is clear before you start!

You will need: mount board or similar sandpaper

Thin card/thick paper

acrylic paint (you choose colours)

Glue (wood glue is best) a kebab stick

Cotton/wool/string

Equipment: scissors, craft knife, clothes pegs are useful to hold your model whilst gluing,

The Galloper:

Start by drawing the pieces onto your card, number them and cut them out. The more carefully you do this the less hard the sandpapering will be. When you have all the pieces cut out, start to glue them together beginning with the central piece. DON’T FORGET to cut out the channel for the stick. When your horse is assembled and you are happy with it, leave it to dry overnight before you start to shape it.

The horse’s profile will be a series of ā€œstepsā€. These need to be made smooth by sanding down or trimming with a craft knife. Shape the head very carefully. Have a look at some gallopers first if you can Paint your horse as you wish Don’t forget that they are highly decorative. I have included a pattern for the saddle but you will need to make it fit well before gluing it on.

Lastly, add the mane and tail made from thick cotton, wool or thin string. This can be wetted with glue and made to look like a carved mane with a little effort. Lastly glue in the kebab stick so that your horse can be stood up. If you want to give this the appearance of twisted brass then glue on a length of cotton in a spiral and paint it gold.

The Cockerel:

Follow the technique for the galloper, but be careful as the cockerel has one leg forwards and the other back. That is why this model seems to have more pieces than the horse.

Of course if you would like to design your own and bring something different that would be WONDERFUL!

MORE STORIES FROM KATE’S FIREBOX...

After dropping the firebox (see Raising Steam Vol. 25 No.1) I had to jack it up to pull it out of the way, which was a bit of a tricky operation as I still had the headstock attached to the smokebox at this point in time, so the whole boiler was ā€˜out of balance’ without the weight of the firebox and tender to help balance it up. Once the firebox was clear I could then get in and see what condition the inside of the boiler looked like. Of course, after goodness knows how many years, maybe 80 as I have no record of the firebox being removed before my attempt, there was plenty of scale to be removed before one could get to see the metal of the boiler itself. I had a small needle gun and grinder with a wire brush, so I set to. In such an enclosed space it does get somewhat noisy and dirty so I made sure I had earplugs AND ear defenders on, as well as a face mask and glasses.

After many hours of labour I had cleared most of the scale and build up of rust and d i r t t o r eve a l s o m e

looked okay to my untrained eye in terms of loss of material and corrosion but later on, after the boiler inspector had looked at it, I had to make a decision on whether to leave it in or get a new one put in. Again I shall explain why in a future article.

Once I had cleaned it all out as best I could I then removed the headstock which, surprisingly, wasn’t too hard a job. The nuts on the six bolts that held it in place, though initially hard to loosen, came apart and out fairly easily. It was when I removed the headstock I was in for a bit of a shock! Corrosion had eaten away around the hole in the smoke box which allows the smoke and gases to escape up the chimney. The metal was wafer thin in places in this area. Apparently it is not unusual for this to happen and though the metal had thinned out a lot there was no risk of the headstock becoming detached from the smokebox as the metal was still very thick where the bolts went through that held it on. What I shall do when reassembling, which some other people do as well, is put in a sacrificial liner that can take the brunt of the gases, smoke and soot and can be easily replaced once worn out.

Finally it was time to take the boiler to the repairers for their and the boiler inspector’s examination to decide how much work needed to be carried out above and beyond just the replacement of the firebox I hired a lorry with a heavy duty crane on it as I have no lifting equipment or transport of my own and, after a couple hours of shuffling it out of my ā€˜tent’ where I have been working, we set off to the repairers

WORDSEARCH

Just for a bit of fun here is a wordsearch for you. There are 20 words hidden within the puzzle and they are all words you might hear around the rally field. The words are in all directions – horizontal, vertical and at an angle – they may even be spelled out backwards!

The answers will be given in the next Raising Steam and as a little incentive, the first list of all the words received at the Editor’s home – one each from a boy and girl apprentice – will have their next membership renewal paid for.

If you like the idea, we might do something similar in the future and if you find the puzzle too easy or too hard, then please let us know that too
