NEXT GLIMPSE INTO IN THE STORY OF KATE’S FIREBOX.

Removing the firebox took more effort than I thought it would. First I tried to knock it out by putting a metal drift in through the mudhole door opening and hitting the drift with a sledgehammer. It didn’t move at all! Though it did shake free all the scale and rust that had accumulated over the years! This indirectly saved me work as the scale and rust has to be removed so the boiler inspector can get a good look at the internal surfaces of the boiler. As I didn’t succeed by hitting, the other way is to jack it out. For this I made up a pulling tool, see my little sketch for details of how this worked. One end of the fixture I put into the slots which I had cut out in the fire box. The other end hangs free on long studding.

A sketc h showing the jig Kevin built to pull the old firebox from the boiler..

I then put two jacks on the lower beam o f t h e to o l an d ‘ja cke d ’ aga in s t th e hornplate. Well it moved a bit and then n o t h i n g . N

anymore; I was getting frustrated to say the least. In situations like that where nothing is going to plan it is best, if you can, to walk away from the situation, calm down, and have a re-think This is what I did. In doing so it dawned on me: caulking!

To make sure that the water stays in where the outer wrapper and the firebox meet at the foundation ring the boiler maker ‘bangs over’ (caulks) metal to seal the joint. This was what was stopping the firebox move further than it had. I then went back to the boiler and instead of using the jacks to pull out the firebox downwards, with the aid of the tool I had made, I disconnected the jacks from the tool and jacked the box upwards back into the boiler. This was successful and I moved it about 3⁄8 inch (9mm) which gave me enough clearance to be able to get in with a grinder to remove the metal that was stopping the firebox from moving down. I reassembled the jacks and tool and started putting on the pressure. This time the box moved and kept on moving, and after about 10 minutes it came out. Celebrations all round!

Editor’s Note. Working on our engines can be slow and sometimes frustrating. When you have achieved one of the big stages, like Kevin has here, it is tremendously rewarding. We now look forward to the next instalment

Do you visit rallies and get to work on traction engines? Have you done a lot of the same things over and over again?

Is this because the people running the engine don’t know what you’ve already done?

If so, you need a log book to record your activities and achievements. These are available from your Vice Chair, Elaine Massey for just £5.00 including postage. Send her a cheque or postal order, payable to the NTET, with a note saying what you want and she will do the rest. They are also available from the NTET Sales unit and we have them on the SAC stand at the Great Dorset Fair.

The Steam Apprentice Club announces its annual award

The Technical Achievement of the Year Award 2011

Applications are invited for the SAC Technical Achievement award. Areas of achievement may include: engineering work on full size engines, model engineering or any other appropriate steam related subject (bearing in mind that we are essentially a road steam organisation).

The purpose is to encourage young people to develop hands-on experience generally within typical engineering skills. This can be using various machines such as lathes and mills as well as handwork. Nominations to be entered by a sponsor for whom they have been working or have been under the instruction of, or Apprentices may enter themselves

Applications to be received by August 15th should consist of a brief description on one side of A4 paper with 3 or 4 photographs and/or sketches. See address inside your latest copy of Raising Steam.

The judging committee will then contact the nominator or Apprentice by either phone or in person to discuss the application. From these discussions, suitable candidates will be chosen, and final and fully detailed submissions will be invited to be with the Chairman by September 15th.

Judging will be completed by mid October with the announcement of the winner by end of October. The award will be presented at the NTET AGM Judges will be from members of the SAC Committee plus invited persons from an area appropriate to the subject entered.

Please note that due to the all round experience we are looking for it is unlikely the award will be given to an Apprentice under 15 Though, as we know, there is always an exception to the rule, so please don’t hesitate either to enter or contact the Chairman for guidance.
