Hi everyone. I start this magazine with a thank you and an apology. Thank you to all those who have sent in letters and photographs for this magazine; this is very much appreciated and REALLY helps me to put your magazine together. I have received a disc with lots of pictures from the Tinkers Park Driving Day but have lost the name of the person who sent it. If this is yours, please let me know Secondly the apology; this magazine should have been with you several weeks ago but my Mum has been very ill, requiring constant nursing. She died in the middle of September so I have not been able to give the SAC much thought recently. I hope things will start to get back to normal now.
Since I last wrote to you John and I have taken Morning Star to Masham and Flookburgh. We also visited the Gloucester Steam Extravaganza at Kemble without the engine. This was the first time we have been there; we loved the show and hope to be able to go again, this time with MS Visiting a new show is always a bit exciting and we did get to meet some of you there. Whenever you see the SAC please come up and say hello
In this issue you will see a reminder about the NTET Driving Course, with an invitation to apply for a scholarship to this event; George Hawkswell, who went last year, obviously thinks it was well worthwhile.
The competitions that took place at Dorset were again well supported with a very high standard of entries; this always makes the judging very difficult If it was left to me you’d all get a prize! The results of these competitions are on the website.
We are now getting towards the quiet season when engines are put to bed for the winter. This is the time when repairs and renewals take place. At long last John has started to build the canopy for Morning Star, I wonder if it will actually be finished in time for next season! If you are lucky enough to be working with an engine as part of their crew this is the way you can really learn about how they work.
Keep your letters and photos coming and we look forward to seeing you next season.
Nanette Durling, Editor.

E l a i n e a n d I w e n t t o t h e B a n bu r y R a l l y a t Bloxham the last weekend in June. And what a scorcher it was, we were certainly glad we had the gazebo for shelter! Because it was so hot, I believe that was the reason not so many people came along. So, as a consequence we didn’t hand out too many leaflets to potential new apprentices. We did however meet some of you which was great, and we discussed amongst other things the competency scheme and what they would like to see in the magazine.
Amongst those I did meet was Andrew Fisher who was working on Mr Michael Davies Fowler A6 7hp Road Locomotive Reg HO5677 Works No 13141. He certainly was having a good time and participated in the demonstration with Fowler Ploughing engine
The Chief a 14nhp engine weighing 19.5 tons Reg AL8345 Works No 2528 This was being pulled across the arena to show the power of the ploughing engine. For an engine built in 1875 it was certainly doing a good job!

Dear Nanette,
I thought this photo might be of interest. It shows William Haward, aged ten, using a Colchester Student lathe – not the ideal machine to learn on as it is quite large. Although not steam related, he is making a cannon. Hopefully the skills he is learning will be later put to use on a traction engine.
Regards, Mike Dyson. Mike is the NTET Public Relations Officer.
Editor’s Note: I have included this letter and picture to show that you can get involved in proper engineering which will help you to learn the skills needed to look after the engines we work on.

Photos from Kevin Munn:

It was built in 1923 Works No. 10R2 given the registration BD 7511 It was new to Ketter ing Council Picture taken at the Bedfordshire Steam and Countr y Fayre 2010.
The NTET is proposing to award up to 3 Scholarships to the NTET Driver Training Course which is held in May each year.
The Driver Training Course has 3 elements over 3 years, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced and covers many aspects of engine management, maintenance and driving. An indicative syllabus can be found on the NTET website (www.ntet.co.uk).
The scholarships are open to non-engine owners being members of non-engine owning families.
Applications including a CV and a statement of why you wish to attend the 3-year Driver Training Course should be submitted by 31st January to the General Secretary of the Trust: South View, Hutton Roof, Car nforth Lancashire LA6 2PF general.secretary@ntet.co.uk
Successful Applicants will be notified by the end of February.
NOTE: The Scholarships only cover the Course Fees, NOT incidental expenses such as travelling, accommodation and food.
