FROM THE EDITOR

Hi everyone. I'm getting all excited, the sun is out, summer's on its way and I'm busy planning another busy year.

There are a lot of things in this magazine that I would like you to take note of. First of all there will not be the usual July issue this year. As you are aware it is the Steam Apprentice Club's 30th birthday this year and we are putting together a special book to celebrate this occasion. This will take the place of the July mag. Yoll can still send me letters and pictures anc..lI will keep them all and put them in the October mag for you. All of the usual competitions, photographic, colouring, model and art details that come in the July mag are also in this issue, so please keep them safe.

John and I have already been in steam. We finished our winter repairs on the morning of Mother's day and decided to take Morning Star out for her first run. It was wonderful, the weather was on our side and everything went to plan, as it was a little windy I came home a little black. Last week we decided that the living van needed some TLC so we took it home and put it in the garden. I spent a]] week with an electric sander rubbing down the woodwork inside, a slow and noisy job! John came home from work to find me hidden in a cloud of dust and paint which he found amusing. Now it's time to start re-painting the inside and finishing off some jobs that needed doing ready for this year's season.

Once again we will be going to Masham rally in July followed by Flookburgh. We are looking forward to seeing you there again and hopefully the weather will be good for us all. Last year, as you may remember, we had a little trouble with the mud at Masham and a few of us ended up being helped out of the arena. Although this is exciting for the public to watch, we would much rather drive under our own steam, it's more fun. I'm now going to say my usual piece. Please send me your stories, remember to give details of the engine if you can, where you were and if possible who owns the engine.

Now some personal news. As you are aware my address changed last year, well now its time for a

name change too. On the 20th June John Durling, your President, and I are gettjng married hence the busy and exciting year. Unfortunately Morning Star, 'the other woman', can't make it to the wedding. lt would be nice if I could get some letters from you under my new name. I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon.

CHAIRMAN'S BIT

At last the new season is just about upon us. S.A.C. driving days start this month for which there are still some spaces available. So, if you haven't already applied or forgot, get your application in quickly. Details are elsewhere in the magazine or on the website. The big one, our 30th SAC celebration driving day is coming together and I hope to see many of you there. As well as the engines themselves we hope to have some lectures for you to attend and stands of steam interest to peruse; and, in the evening a barbeque and ente1tainment with a certain busking gentleman.

I have been asked to remind you if you are attending a rally and want to have a go on an engine contact me first so that, hopefully, I can arrange one for you to go on. I have many names from the rallies that I can contact directly. By doing this it will remove the pressures etc that organisers have on the day running their shows and avoid disappointment for yourselves.

As you are probably aware the economy is not doing too well. To help keep our costs under control we are looking at various things, one of which is this magazine. How would you feel if we went electronic by either posting it on the website or maybe even post directly into your e-mailbox? Do complete the survey on the website or write to me and let me know what you think.

I know I have asked the following in the past, but is there anything you want the club to do? Again contact me and let me know.

Finally, do all have a good season and above all a safe one.

P.S. Do watch the website for updates on SAC activities and news as our next issue of Raising Steam will be corning out early around the 20th June to tie in with the 30th Celebration weekend.

WEBSITE APPEAL

In order to make the website more interesting and more 'yours' we need your input. Send pictures stories etc to me. Keep sending photos in for the guest album. The message board has had a couple of contributions but could always do with a few more!

I'm afraid that I need to say sorry for anyone who's sent photos in using the photo uploader and hasn't seen them on the site yet, I've been having a bit of trouble with the uploader so could you please send them again via e-mail instead?

Dear Editor.

Recently my mum has decorated my bedroom and painted a mamod on my wall, and would like it if you could feature it in the magazine.

2009 ART COMPETITION

The theme for this year is

THE SAC's 30th ANNIVERSARY

Entries can be in any medium, pastels, oils, watercolours, crayons, felt tips, anything you like. The maximum size will be A3. That is not to say you have to use that size, you can choose to go much smaller if you wish. If you are using pastels or charcoal, then please use some fixative to preserve it, especially if you are forced to post it (even hairspray works!).

This competition will be open to those aged 12 and over

Entries to be sent to either the Chairman by August 22nd or handed in at the stand in the NTET tent no later than lOa.m. Saturday of the Great Dorset Fair.

YOUNG DRIVERS ON THE RALLY FIELD

It has been some time since we addressed the question of 'what are the rules governing young drivers on the rally field'.

The NTET is able to set the rules which allow young, unlicensed people to drive engines on the rally field providing the following points are complied with. It must be made clear that these only apply to NTET Authorised Rallies. If the event is not an NTET Authorised event then the normal licence conditions apply, i.e. you must be over 21 and hold a full group B licence (or group G for a steam ro11er).These rules apply to driving miniatures as well as full size engines. Obviously, if you're driving a miniature engine you can't have two people on it so the accompanying driver must be walking beside the engine; close enough to be able to take control if the young driver gets in to difficulties.

Under age, non-licence holders may be allowed to drive a steam vehicle at an Authorised event if all of the following conditions are met:-

1. The insurance cover for the vehicle specifically includes Steam Apprentice Club members or other young drivers.

2. The person is a bona fide member of the NTET Steam Apprentice Club.

3. That, age not withstanding, the 'Apprentice' is not prohibited from applying for or holding a driving licence.

4. The 'Apprentice' is closely accompanied at all times by a person who is a full licence holder for the type of vehicle being used.

5. The minimum age shall be l 3, with a minimum height of 1.40m. The known conduct of the 'Apprentice' is not likely to detract from the Safety standards of the event.

6. The Safety Officer has given formal sanction following a risk assessment of the 'roadways' and vehicle manoeuvring places.

7. The Rally Organiser has given written notice to the Exhibitors and Public of his intention to allow such movements (via notices and the Rally programme).

These 'rules' allow you to drive an engine on the Rally Field but remember, point 7 is important, this can only happen if the Rally Organiser has agreed. I know that there are some rallies where they decide, for good safety reason, that they can't allow youngsters to drive even if the rest of the above conditions are met. If this is the case please respect their decision.

PLAYING WITH PICTURES

Stephen Myres, whose Dad owns the Bun-ell Showman's road loco General Gough, has sent a collection of pictures of the engine, whole or part of which he has modified.

I have selected a few to show what can be done. What do you think? Do you like them? Could you do the same, or better?

As always LET ME KNOW! Send me your thoughts, ideas, pictures, st01ies etc. I would love to hear from Stephen with details of how he did some of these pictures.

Nanette Sanders, Editor.

END OF SEASON STEAM UP FOR THE GREAT YORKSHIRE TRACTION ENGINE CLUB

One of the few dry, sunny, warm days in September was the weekend of the end of season steam up for the great Yorkshire Traction Engine Club. Because my Dad is a farmer running the farm on his own, and due to the tenible weather of the so called sununer, we weren't able to spend hours sitting outside every pub in the area with steam engines this year. We started by going around the local show. One engine which is usually there is Richard Preston's BmTel] Showman's engine Lightning II and his stage of entertainment. The engine is part way though a full overhaul at Jillliner Marsh's. We went back via Carlton in Cleveland to see how far the other engines had got on the road nm after spending the previous night at the Blackwell Ox, Carlton with added entertainment from Dr Busker who was also at the show. It was a first run for one engine, Aveling & Porter roller No. 14071, and another I haven't seen since the run back in 2006, Fowler No. 9055. There was the usual four or so that attend the local rallies in this area, of which a certain number were cancelled. Another that wasn't attending this year as it is also part way though a full overhaul is Mann tractor Brink Burn Lass No. 1386 owned by Roy Wakefield.

Fowler Road Roller 'Undaunted' at Woodcote rally2007 making a road with grit cart

UNDAUNTED TO BECOME A 'SHOW ROLLER'

Undaunted No. 17506 DNB Fowler road roller, complete with tar spraying kit and all the tackle, was recently sold on by our good friend Robert Cox, who lives near Woodcote. The gentleman who recently acquired her is wishfog to convert it into, as Old Glory magazine put it, a 'showler' - a roller converted to a showman's style engine, ruining the original roller which is still fitted with its original tackle for making the roads. I don't know what you think of this situation but I am truly gutted as I know that Robert sold that roller in good faith, believing that it would be in good hands. However, it isn't the only roller with tar spraying tack.le as Fowler No. 15589 Hilda is another after being saved from a scrap yard. The owner has gathered up, over the years, a collection of tar spraying kit and re-fitted them since 1971 when his Dad retrieved it. Robe1i Cox also sold off his grit cart and this year it made an appearance with Hilda at Masham rally (see photo overleaf). Glad that it went to a good home, where it should be propedy looked after.

SAC MODEL BUILDING COMPETITION 2009

A 'Mamod' scale organ for your collection.

This model is based on the organ Four Seasons owned by Keith Honour of Stansted, Essex. Keith also owns the Burrell Showman's Margaret, No. 3926, of 1922. This organ was built in 1991 by Page and Howard, with additional work by K. Meayers. The front was decorated by J. Packett and J. Samey, and the organ was then housed in a four wheel trailer. In 1998 additions to the bass section and new baritones were added, by Deans of Bristol, giving the organ the tonal quality of a larger instrument.

I will be demonstrating building thjs model at the 30th birthday weekend at Old Warden. There will be photographs and the plans on the SAC website, www.ntet.co.uk/sac

What you will need:

Mount board or similar

Matchsticks

A cork

Paints, enamel, acrylic or similar

Cereal box card

Very thin fabric to act as hinges

Crochet cotton or button thread

Kebab stick or cocktail sticks, or wood

Also a large button or disc of card for the cymbal, jewellery findings or anything for general decoration. Small figures, if you can find them, for the front of the organ.

A piece of dark fabric for the backdrop behind the organ. This will make it stand out.

Equipment:

Scissors, craft knife, glue (I use woodworking glue), paint brush, something to cut on safely.

There are three elements to this model, the lorry carcass, the organ and the trailer.

The lorry carcass:

In mount board cut four rectangles 9cm x 20cm. These are your base and top.

Cut 2 pieces 19.5 x 12.5cm for the sides, and cut ONE of these lengthwise 5.5cm from the bottom.

(one side is complete and the other opens to reveal the organ)

Cut 2 sections 12.5 x 8.5cm for the front and back. Take one layer of the base and lay it on a flat surface. Place the narrower section of the cut lotry side against it. Cut a 1cm strip of thin :fabric and glue this over the join. Then glue the second base layer on top of the first and weight it down until dry. This will make a strong base. Repeat these steps with the top. If you wish, you can cut a small door in the rear of the lorry, hinging it in the same way as the drop side. Glue the front and back onto the other side, and assemble all together. Paint the whole carcass and leave to dry.

The

organ:

First of all please have a very good look at the pictures on the website!

Cut out the basic shape of the organ carcass. Then cut out and assemble the lower pipe fascia. Next stage is to build your organ pipes from matchsticks, nail clippers are good for cutting the matches accurately. Now for the tricky bit! Cut out the va1ious scrolls from thin card and carefully glue on thick thread following each curve, this will take a lot of patience!! When they are frnishecl and painted gold they wi'll look very effective. You need to cut a 1cm strip or mount board for the shelves top and bottom of the opening in the c;arcass.
