For years Sam Wood has made work about the natural world and life in the city, using colour to break down the distinctions between those spaces. From the vital rush of Marrakech to the hushed gardens of Tangier, Our Places brings together a series of reflections on his first trip to the country
Following in the footsteps of so many artists who were beguiled by the visual richness of the country, from Henri Matisse to Francis Bacon, Wood's paintings move between intimate moments of tranquility to blazing scenes full of movement and dynamism.
'So much of my experience of Morocco was between two states, the private and the public, what is revealed and what is hidden away. In this show I wanted to look at the nature of this duality and how it is articulated in architecture, in gardens and in the visual richness of the city '
Wood's colourful evocations are at once memories and inventions, blurring the lines between his own lived experience and a dream-like drift into something other.
