Julian Opie (b 1958, London) is one of the most widely recognised British artists of his generation Since the late 1980s, he has developed a highly distinctive visual language: simplified figures, bold outlines, and a deliberate reduction of detail His work sits comfortably between fine art and the visual world of everyday life, drawing on sources ranging from classical sculpture to street signage and digital graphics.
Portraiture has been a constant in Opie’s practice. Rather than pursuing traditional likeness, he focuses on the few visual cues that allow a person to be recognised a hairstyle, a stance, a repeated gesture. The result is work that feels both specific and anonymous, hovering between individual identity and modern type.
