Maravillas con Variaciones Acrósticas en el Jardín de Miró (1975) is a book featuring Miró’s artwork alongside poems dedicated to the artist by the famous Spanish poet Rafael Alberti. Miró’s visuals in this suite of 20 colour lithographs on Guarro paper combine his love of nature with a playful, abstract imagination, bringing to life a garden where little “maravillas” (“wonders” or “marvels”) exist amongst the butterflies and flowers. Miro’s desire to unite the visual lyricism of his painting with the writing of poets led him to collaborate with Alberti, with the works in this series echoing the rhythm, spontaneity and symbolism found in Alberti’s poetry. The series combines two approaches: expressive, calligraphic mark-making, and compositions populated by Miró’s floating figures, stars and circles. The following 13 artworks represent the latter approach, exemplifying the distinctive visual language that characterised Miró’s later career.
