JACK’S CROMANE - FIRE AND ICE MASQUERADE BALL

Jacks’ Coastguard Restaurant, Cromane hosted their first Fire & Ice Masquerade Ball. The stunning backdrop of this award winning Cromane restaurant set the scene for a sold out event where guests were entertained from start to finish. A five course gala dinner, flaming desserts & ice sculptures were on the menu. As usual with a Jacks ‘event, the Grand Finale was spectacular and featured a theatrical and flamboyant performance by Drag Queen, Lucy Von Furr. Brian Keary of Jacks’ said ‘ This is the second of 3 events planned for this year, the next event is planned for October and we hope it will be as fun and successful as our Designer Showcase and Fire & Ice Ball.’ He continues ‘Guests are looking for something different, a complete night out including food, entertainment and a few surprises thrown in and that’s what we aim to continue to do here at Jacks’

Kerry Airport celebrates 25 years this year

Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Sydney via Dublin. With Tourism direct access is the key ingredient to attracting tourists to the county. Low Fares airlines such as Ryanair have also helped to increase tourism to the county with direct access from the UK, Germany, Spain and Portugal. Tourists form the cities mentioned can now book flights directly to Kerry via Dublin with airlines such as Etihad and Aer Lingus. As a community airport first and foremost do the people of Kerry realise the benefit they have on their doorstep? Kerry Airport celebrates 25 years this year can you give us a little background to how it all started? On the 2nd July 1968 Kerry County Airport Company Limited was formed at a meeting in Castleisland and it was incorporated in the following weeks as a public limited company with the main objective being to build and manage an airport. The attendance included Austin Stack, acting county manager and chairman of the county development team, and Jim O Callaghan, chief assistant county engineer, Kerry County Council, who were key figures in ensuring the company’s plans, came to fruition. There were assisted by a board of directors with Tom Ryle, ESB district manager in Tralee being the chairman of the board of directors. What airline companies has been part of Kerry from the beginning and how has it developed with new airline companies joining over the years? NR: The airport itself is over forty years old but has only being operating commercially scheduled flights since 1989. The first commercial airline to operate a 6

CONNECT MAGAZINE July 2014

scheduled service into Kerry Airport was Aer Lingus on the 22nd May 1989 from Dublin. This was followed the following day the 23rd May 1989 by Ryanair who operated their flight from Luton. Both airlines still operate scheduled flights to and from Kerry Airport today to the same destinations. How important a role does Kerry Airport have in developing industry in the county? The main industries in Kerry are Tourism and Agriculture with a mixed Industrial Base including a growing industry based on Information Technology, Financial Services and Auto Parts. Many of these National and Multinational Companies have operations and offices here in Kerry as well as offices in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. As with all successful companies operating in key markets across the globe connectivity is important. Kerry Airport enables the company’s executives to visit their customers and their customers visit them on a daily basis. Company executives can now check-in at Kerry Airport and can be checked straight through to destinations such as, New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Orlando, Toronto, Abu Dhabi, Dubai,

The people of Kerry are aware of the benefit of having an airport on their doorstep and have done so from day one. With many of them having family members who immigrated to the UK and the USA back in the sixties and seventies and again in recent years the airport has enabled them travel back and forth to visit their families on a regular basis. People have shown their appreciation of having the airport on their doorstep so to speak by flying from the airport when and where possible with many of them now being frequent flyers.

How many staff are employed at the airport? The airport currently employees 50 full time staff and 5 seasonal staff members at present. They work in the various departments throughout the airport such as Air Traffic Control, Ground Crew, Customer Services, Fire Department and Security. Staff members Howard Jones (Senior Air Traffic Controller) Bill Horgan (Senior Air Traffic Controller) John Sheehan (Security Officer) and Peter Moore (General Manager) recently celebrated 25 years’ service at the airport. Several other staff members have over ten years’ service which indicates how little a staff turnover we have here at Kerry Airport. We work as a close tight knit team which shows in the way we provide a professional yet personnel approach in dealing with all our passengers. This only comes from years of experience and working as a team. A further 50 people are indirectly employed at the airport, these people work with the car hire companies and the Bar & Restaurant while part of the airport they are operated separately. In this economic climate do you feel the airport has suffered? Could the government do more to support a local service like this? Like many other industries the recession has also impacted on Kerry Airport. This was evident with fewer passenger numbers through the airport in recent years but thankfully last year saw and

increase in passengers numbers and all indications so far for this year are showing a further increase on last year’s passenger figures. This increase is down to the people of Kerry travelling once again and choosing Kerry Airport as their airport of choice. As you know our Kerry – Dublin flight is PSO subsidised service. The current PSO contract end in November 2014 but the government have just announced that this current contract will be extended until February 2015 so one has to say that the government as well as previous governments have and do support regional airports. Where to from here for Kerry Airport? As a vital piece of infrastructure for the county we work closely with local industries, authorities and tourist interests. We are constantly talking to airlines and trying to source routes that will be sustainable and of social and economic benefit to those living, working and holidaying in the county. This is a long process and it can take years to get a new route. Kerry Airport also has a large Executive Jet market. The airport has grown to become one of the most respected names in executive handling and hopes to further increase the number of corporate jets operating into Kerry. Many of these private jets bring passengers from all over the world to play golf on any of our world renowned courses such as Ballybunion, Killarney, Tralee, Dooks and Waterville to name but a few. Have many famous people passed through Kerry Airport? Over the years we have seen several famous movie stars, pop stars, sport

stars and world leaders pass through Kerry Airport. Famous people such as President Bill Clinton, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Elton John, Tom Jones, Jane Seymour, Bryan Adams, The Corrs, Tiger Woods, Darren Clarke as well as our own Killarney native movie actor Michael Fassbender. Recently we had Colin Farrell pass through the airport, Colin was filming his latest movie in Kenmare with fellow actress Rachel Weiss. Another regular famous person we see is Kerry native Don O Neill who hails from Ballyheigue. Don as we know is an International Fashion Designer based in New York. How important is the Kerry to Dublin Service? Our Kerry to Dublin route is of vital importance to the airport. It is also important to the people of Kerry as it allows them to travel to Dublin for business, for pleasure, for sporting events and more importantly for medical appointments. We currently have two flights daily to Dublin the first one at 7:30am and the second flight at 12:30pm. The flight is currently operated by Stobart Air (formally Aer Arann) under the branding Aer Lingus Regional. With the introduction of the great low fare of €44 Euro each way including taxes and charges we have seen an increase in people taking this flight. With the connectivity to the USA, Canada and Europe with Aer Lingus and to Asia and Australia with Etihad Airways we hope to increase the number of passengers on this route. Now that more and more Kerry people are travelling abroad to such places as Asia and Australia to work and holiday it is important that this route is maintained and supported.

What’s your STYLE? At the beginning of every design project the million dollar question is what style to choose! Whatever your style, there are different things to consider that will affect the final layout. If it’s a renovation project you have to consider the existing building style and the structure of the rooms. With a new build however, the world is your oyster. You can create the style of your choice keeping in mind the functionality of the space, who will use it, the size of the space and the natural light. There is no definitive list of design styles as they adapt and change continuously, but here is a brief overview of some of the most common styles. The modern style focuse’s on clean lines and function and avoids excessive accessories. When executed correctly it can give the impression of simplicity and calmness. With contemporary interiors geometric shapes are essential and the key identifying feature is line found through the use of bold colour blocks and square edged furniture. In traditional style order, symmetry and balance are key. The fabrics used tend to be elegant without being ornate. Natural wood, stone or marble work best with natural colours such as greens, reds and creams. The overall feel of the design is comfortable and homely. So, the next time you are decorating ask yourself, what style do I like? What will look good in my space and what do I feel comfortable living with?

Beauty Bag

This issue we meet Virgina Macari, Model, Fashion Designer, TV Presenter, Actress and most important, Mum to busy little man Thor. Virginia tells us a bit about her busy schedule and the products she loves to have.

I used to love my regular trips to the beauty salon but now I prefer to pamper myself with a good book, some candles, a bubble bath, silence and meditation. Trust me! I’ve a really active toddler who demands constant attention so all the things I just mentioned above are pure heaven!

What foundation, blusher, eye products, blusher & lipsticks are you using and do you go more dramatic at night?

Can you tell me your daily cleansing routine, products you use and can’t live without? Products I can’t live without these days are my vitamins by Well woman and my I. Envy lashes by Kiss! (I’ve tried every lash product in the country but these are the best! And they are so cheap!) I also adore my little treatment bottle of Moroccan Oil. My hair is so dry and this helps a lot.

Do you give yourself a weekly pampering session at home (face & body) or do you take regular trips to the beauty salon? 12

CONNECT MAGAZINE July 2014

I’ve tried so many foundations and I’ve never been really happy with them until I found La Teint Touché Éclat by YSL. It gives the best coverage, it’s light and natural and lets your skin breathe and glow. My favourite blusher is Orgasm by NARS. I use lots of NARS products because it really suits my skin. When it comes to lipsticks I go crazy for MAC. I always buy their latest colours but the best one has to be Crème Cup! I think it looks sexy on a girls pout.

Has having a baby & a busy life changed your routine? Can you share some of these tips with other busy Moms? I wish I had the answer to cure fatigue! There’s one good thing I know about having a baby later in your life and that’s having patience! You need lots of it and I’ve plenty. I’ve had my fun in my twenties. And, you need someone to give your foot massages. Other than that I take so much more pleasure in things I used to take for granted, as in having friends over in the

evening when Thor is sleeping, enjoying cooking and having great conversations over a fine bottle of wine. Have to say though, that since I had my little man, I’ve changed my diet. I eat so much healthier and I exercise more. I don’t think I’ve felt so good in such a long time.

Any beauty secrets that you picked up from the generations before you? My mother always taught me to Moisturise from a young age. I remember she bought me Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturize Lotion when I was just fourteen and I got hooked quickly. I love the feeling of soft skin so I always make the extra effort to lather lots of cream all over my body every morning and when I go to bed.

Have you ever been to Kerry and if so have you been to any beauty salons/spas? Yes! I love Kerry! We visited again last year. It’s incredibly beautiful but sadly I’ve never been to any salon there. I would love some recommendations because we plan to go back again soon.

After 25 years now in the beauty industry, I believe that to stand the test of time there is no quick fix. Investment in routine and products is the key to making and keeping your face looking as youthful as possible for as long as possible and that is why here at the Sanctuary we invest in leading equipment, products and training to afford this to the women of Tralee, Kerry and beyond. At the Sanctuary Spa we believe that to achieve this great skin, you need a mix of high skincare maintenance and discipline, but great skin is achievable for everywoman.

I PUT THE QUESTION TO MARY O’DONOGHUE, PROPRIETOR OF THE WELL-ESTABLISHED, SANCTUARY MEDI SPA AND CLINIC, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF TRALEE TOWN FOR OVER 25 YEARS NOW.

Congratulations to Mary and her highly experienced beauty team who specialise in, body treatments, facials and laser therapy at the Sanctuary Medi Spa. Happy 25th Birthday and wishing you many more successful and beautiful years in business.

“What is your secret to standing the test of time?” Mary replied simply ‘looking after your business is just like looking after your skin. If you have a great skincare routine, your skin will stand the test of time, you will age graciously and you will have the kind of face that other women would dream of. If you want that kind of face, then you must understand that just like running a successful business, it takes time to achieve and it is a long term approach. Today’s woman wants a face that looks healthy, glowing, natural and flawless and at The Sanctuary Medi Spa, “We Believe in Results” and this is what we want to achieve for our clientele’. This led me to my next question - So how do I get this Mary? ‘To achieve this kind of great skin, just like the stars we see on a daily basis in our media, a women needs to live a healthy lifestyle from the inside out and she needs to take her skincare routine and regime seriously. It more than just cleansing, toning and 14

STAY FIT

IN THE SUN

It’s funny that we spend all winter training to get fit and get into shape for the summer or holidays but when summer arrives some of us stop. We use excuses like it’s too warm to go to the gym or it’s a waste of a fine evening to be stuck indoors. A lot of us swap our gym work for training outdoors e.g. cycling or walking. Even though this type of exercise is very good for us we tend to do it with a friend. We chat the whole way through what is supposed to be a training session without breaking too much of a sweat. If we do break a sweat it is more likely caused by the heat than the exertion from exercise. If your going to train outdoors than make sure you mix up the terrain e.g. add some hills into your route to make it more challenging or time your route and break it into interval’s which will give you more of a challenge and a better workout. Cycle/walk for 10 min gently to make sure you’re warmed up and push at a faster or harder pace of 30-45 sec, than slow your pace to recover and repeat. Allow 5-10 min at the end of your route to cool down finishing at nice slow pace and this will also give you the chance for that chat you might want to have. Stopping your gym work completely is never a good idea, not only will you lose the power and strength you trained all year to build up but you may also lose the muscle tone and shape you have sculpted through strength training. If you don’t have the time to do strength training on the

same day you do your outdoor training than try and alternate them. Strength training can also be done outdoors if you prefer. You have enough resistance using your own body to give a very effective workout using simple exercises like squats, pushups, lunges, situps and my personal favourite Burpees. If you have the strength you can even do pull ups at the park from the monkey bars. Do it with a friend where ye can challenge each other and assist each other, a park bench can also be a useful tool where you can step up and down on it to strengthen and tone your legs and bum. Then try some bodyweight dips from the edge of the bench to work your triceps. Exercise can be very interesting or very dull depending on what you do, who you’re with and where you train. Use your imagination and if you get bored than change what your doing but never stop. Add dumbbells, kettlebells and suspension training into any exercise routine and you will never have to repeat the same workout again. Of course we can’t forget one very important component when it comes to keeping ourselves fit and healthy for summer your NUTRITION. As well as exercising hard all year we have being watching what we eat. We have cut out the white bread, taking advice from everyone who has given it, ate chicken and salad for lunch every other day and now summers here what do we do. Yes you’ve guessed it, huge bbq burgers served on a lovely soft white bun covered with lashing of pink sauce, coleslaw and chips and washed down with ice cold beer, wine or cider. It doesn’t take long to undo all

● Obstetric (maternity care) ● Antenatal and parenting education ● Pediatric- with Dr Fergus Leahy ● Fertility and Shared Care Assisted Conception (IVF)

the good you have done, so a couple of good choices can make the difference. If you’re lucky enough to have a bbq on a beautiful Irish summers evening, than have your burger but try and skip that white bun with all the trimmings. Most bbq’s will have some kind of salad on the table so healthiest option might be bbq chicken with loads of salad and a small bit of dressing washed down with a light beer/ cider, spritzer or better still a clear spirit with soda water and lime, of course if you want to be exceptionally good you’ll just have water. Please seek medical advice from a professional before starting any type of exercise or nutrition program. MEDITATION AND THE PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS IN DAILY LIFE TRULY IS A BLESSING TO EXPERIENCE This month Dr Mary had a chat with Carolyn Curtis of Coach4Life (Ireland & Lanzarote) and brought us these great tips. Carolyn teaches meditation one to one on Skype, via workshops & online courses, and on her special Sunshine Retreat Holidays in Lanzarote. For more details see www.coach4life.ie or phone 0876419912 At the beginning it takes a little dedicated time to learn the very simple techniques of meditation. It is a practice that can enhance your life a thousand fold. From stress, anxiety and worry. From sleepless nights, erratic hormones to reduced immunity, meditation can and does dissolve and heal on many levels, physically, mentally and emotionally. There is a wonderful saying that reads “If you can breathe, you can meditate” Ajahn Chah.

It really is that simple! The basis of meditation is just slowing down your thought processes and focusing on one thing e.g. your breath to guide you into a calmer state. My experience of meditation has and continually does help to dissolve my fears and enhance the connection I have both with myself, others, and life. Having discovered meditation after a serious illness over 20 years ago I believe it has kept my immune system strong and allowed me to make good decisions. And most importantly on a daily basis it allows me to see and experience life at the highest level. Like everyone else I have been through challenging times but the practice of mindfulness in my daily life has been like a life jacket helping me to be calm through these experiences and find the best route out of them. If I was to name one other great benefit I have received through the practice of meditation and mindfulness is accepting myself and treating myself with kindness. How often do you criticize yourself? Can you ever do enough or be good enough?

Criticism breaks the spirit whereas acceptance and kindness heals it. The relationship you have with yourself is lifelong. Make it a loving one.

SPOON FEEDING YOUR BABY

By Therese Dunne a former paediatric dietitian in Temple Street Children’s Hospital and co-author of the book ‘Feed Your Child Well’

WHY SOLIDS SHOULD NOT BE INTRODUCED BEFORE 4 MONTHS (17 WEEKS) OF AGE Solids should not be introduced before 17 weeks of age because a baby’s gut and kidneys will not be mature enough to cope with solid food. Introducing solids too early is associated with an increased risk of allergy and coeliac disease. A recent Irish study by research dietitian Dr Roslyn Tarrant showed that almost 1 in 4 babies born at a Dublin maternity hospital had started solids by 12 weeks of age. WHY SOLIDS SHOULD NOT BE INTRODUCED AFTER 6 MONTHS (26 WEEKS) OF AGE

Breast milk or formula milk will provide all the nourishment a baby needs for around the first six months of life. Solids should be introduced close to 6 months (26 weeks) of age. Some flexibility is needed to ensure solids are introduced at a time suited to each individual baby’s development. It is safe to give solids after 4 months (17 weeks) of age but not before this time.

Iron is the world’s most common single nutrient deficiency. Iron deficiency during infancy and childhood may have long lasting detrimental effects on the developing brain. Iron rich foods such as beef, pork and lamb need to be included in a baby’s diet from 6 months of age. New research indicates that introducing gluten after 7 months of age increases the risk of both coeliac disease and Type 1 Diabetes.

“With my sunglasses on I am Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 76” One of the world’s greatest actors recognises the importance of sunglasses and so should all of us. With the sun finally “Shining” (pardon the pun) in The Kingdom, we can finally wear our shades with pride. This week I visited the Opticians of Kerry to see what are this seasons must haves in sunglasses. The big winner this year is Rayban Aviator style, a throw back to Tom Cruise in his Top Gun Days. It is hard to believe that it is 28 years since Maverick and Goose were our heartthrobs and we were all a flutter about pilots and men in uniforms. Personally my favourite sun glasses are Prada and I recently purchased an uber cool pair in CH Opticians, they are retro, oversized with thick tortoiseshell frames. I am really chanelling my inner Jackie O when I am wearing them. One of the golden rules when buying sunglasses is that they are never too small, they should always over the eye and surrounding area completely. Polaroid lenses are very important as they reduce the glares attributed to sunshine and while driving this includes the glare that reflects off flat surfaces that interferes with vision. Jerry O Connor optician in Listowel has a really good offer Z-One Prescription Sunglasses from €69, and also stocks the really cool Crocs Eyewear collection. Oakley are always popular with the sporty types, particularly golfers and water sports people. Maui Jim offers a wide selection of lightweight fashion and performance styles.

Always a good bet are the classics, Christian Dior and Gucci. I remember on one holiday losing my much loved pair of Guccis and crying over them. I quickly got over them by having a few Pina Coladas. Wedding and racing season is now in full swing, wearing a trendy pair of sunglasses really does complete an outfit. Nowadays you can get frames to match any colour outfit and they can add to your ensemble as much as a statement neckpiece. As always I think that you should take the advice of the staff as they are highly trained and have a vast knowledge about the produts that they sell. Like everything my advice is to stay away from cheap brands that are mass produced. Your eyes deserve the best protection possible. Value for money brand Michael Kors has a stunning collection this year and has a style to suit everyone. This brand seems to be getting it bang on trend in all aspects of their collection including watches, handbags and clothing. So folks there you have it, my words of wisdom for this month. If there is any topic or advice that you would like me to cover in future issues drop me an email to Fashion@ConnectUntil then! Stay stylish

HELLO THERE, HOPE THE SUMMER IS TREATING YOU WELL. THIS MONTH I WILL BE DISCUSSING DRESSES. SOME LADIES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN IN A DRESS SINCE THEIR COMMUNION BUT THERE’S A DRESS FOR EVERYONE. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR SHAPE, SIZE OR HEIGHT THE RIGHT DRESS WILL HAVE YOU FEELING FEMININE AND GORGEOUS. THERE ARE NO HARD AND FAST RULES WHEN PICKING A DRESS BUT BEFORE EVEN LOOKING, INVEST IN SOME GOOD FOUNDATION UNDERWEAR. I KNOW I HAVE SAID THIS BEFORE BUT IT IS SO IMPORTANT I DON’T MIND REPEATING MYSELF First on the summer dress hit list is the wonderful maxi dress. For pear-shaped and curvaceous ladies make sure the fabric flows from the bust. For ruler shapes, petite and slim frames opt for a body skimming style. The versatile maxi can take you from a wedding to a festival, by use of your accessories and footwear. Add a statement necklace, headpiece and killer heels for a wedding, while be oxygen festival ready with a pair of flats or willies (if necessary), cropped jacket or shirt. The classic shift dress has stayed true to form for decades. With all the different types, whether it is a fitted Audrey Hepburn style or a slightly looser version that is not so fitted at the waist there is a shift dress for everyone. The one piece of advice I would give is to keep the accessories simple for that chic Grace Kelly look .The shift dress is another versatile wardrobe essential .This season’s hottest look is the illusion dress, while it won’t make you disappear entirely it can take you down a dress size by the clever placing of print to the middle part of the dress at the front and back. Avoid this dress if you are pear shaped as it is particularly suited to the hourglass figure .Be careful what you put over this dress as you do not want to block the print or shape .A shawl or wrap work best and give a more dressed-up silhouette. These are just three of the hottest dress styles this season, but there are many more to discover, just get out there and try them on. THIS WAS A DIFFICULT PROCESS AND TOOK SOME TIME, BUT ONE RECIPE THAT WOULD WAS ALWAYS SURE TO FEATURE WAS CAESAR SALAD. CAESAR SALAD IS SO EASY TO MAKE AND IS WELL SUITED TO SERVE AS A LUNCH, STARTER OR AT A BARBECUE. THE KEY TO A STUNNING CAESAR SALAD IS NOT TO OVER DRESS THE LEAVES, SO ENSURE THE DRESSING HAS A LIGHT AND CREAMY CONSISTENCY THAT DRESSES THE LEAVES LIGHTLY. A HEAVY DRESSING WILL CLUMP THE LEAVES TOGETHER AND BE TO OVERPOWERING. THIS MONTH WE ARE GIVING AWAY A 2 COPIES OF OUR NEWLY PUBLISHED COOK BOOK TO 2 LUCKY READERS. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION.

Legal Compliance Honesty in the workplace • • • •

Honesty in the workplace In recent years there has been a major increase in the occurrence of employees stealing from their place of work. Theft can be in many forms such as stealing money directly from the till, or stealing stock. Some employees go to great lengths to avoid detection and manage to steal large sums of money or large amounts of stock from their employers before they are apprehended. Sample issues of dishonesty can include the following: • Conducting fraudulent refunds and keeping the cash themselves

Non-documentation of sales Fraud, credit card misuse, including stealing customer’s details Not scanning goods when serving friends/ family members Taking stock directly from the shelves.

Honesty Policy The best way for an employer to deal with such issues is to implement an Honesty Policy. This policy should be issued to and signed-off by every employee. The Honesty Policy will run in conjunction with the company Disciplinary and Grievance Policy whereby any employee who is suspected of breaching the Honesty Policy will be subject to an investigation in order to establish the full facts of the case. The Honesty Policy is designed to protect the majority of people who want to work in an environment in which honesty is encouraged and in which the employee, the employer, and customers are protected from any dishonest acts by other employees, customers, suppliers or the general public. The Honesty Policy should clearly identify what expectations

employees are expected to meet and what they should do if they feel that the policy has been breached by another stakeholder. Whistle – blowing Employers can provide contact details for an external body in their Honesty Policy to ensure that employees feel free to make a complaint without fear of prejudice from within their organisation. The HR Suite offer this service. The HR Suite can also help you implement an honesty policy or can assist in correctly managing any issues of dishonesty should they occur in your organisation. Cosmetic Dentistry Marcas Mac Domhnaill Cosmetic Dentistry is a term that has become popular with people in the last twenty years or so. However, it is not a new concept. It could be argued that most dental procedures are cosmetic in that they improve the appearance of the teeth. In recent years, many dentists have seen an increase in people’s awareness of their teeth and oral hygiene. This does not always mean that people will opt immediately for cosmetic dental treatment to improve the appearance of their teeth but it does make them think of the treatment possibilities that are now available.Cosmetic dentistry can fall into different categories e.g. improving the colour of teeth, improving the shape of teeth (or both), or filling a gap to make the false teeth look natural. These procedures can be done in the sole pursuit of improving the look of teeth but also may help to improve the function capacity of teeth (i.e. the workload that teeth can take). In this article, I will discuss veneers and lumineers®. These are very thin pieces of porcelain which are stuck onto the front surfaces of teeth, in order to improve their appearance. You will need good solid back teeth to take biting pressure if you wish to put porcelain on your front teeth. The colour can be chosen in consultation with the dentist, so that they match the existing teeth in the mouth. Some people avail of the opportunity to whiten their teeth by picking a whiter colour of porcelain. It may only be necessary to put veneers/lumineers on the top teeth for the sake of appearance. If the lower teeth are not totally visible when speaking, then they could be bleached to improve their colour. With traditional veneers, teeth are usually filed back to make space for the new porcelain exterior. Local anaesthetic is used to numb teeth for traditional veneers. An impression (mould) is then taken and sent to the dental technician in a dental laboratory, who makes the veneers. When the veneers are returned to the dentist, they are glued onto the front of the teeth. With lumineers®, the procedure differs, in that little or no trimming of the tooth needs to take place, therefore, usually eliminating the need to numb the tooth with a local anaesthetic injection. In this case, the strengthened porcelain is thinner, and is glued onto the front of the tooth, when it is returned to the dentist from the dental laboratory.

The advantages of porcelain veneers/lumineers® are that they can improve both the shape and colour of the teeth, all in one go. They also may cover old white fillings that are going off-colour or stained at the edges. They can help to narrow spaces between teeth and make crooked teeth look straighter. In recent years, lumineers® are replacing the traditional veneers, as they need little or no enamel to be filed off the teeth, thus avoiding sensitivity issues. In the next issue, I will look at bleaching teeth to whiten them. Beir Bua agus Beannacht. MAC DOMHNAILL DENTAL TRALEE 11 Denny Street Tralee 066 7121457 fiacloir@gmail.com

Melanie Harty Kerry food producer seals deal with national supermarket chain Tell us about Harty’s foods and where the concept was born from? Harty’s offer a range of savoury jellies, made from all natural ingredients which are fresh, innovative and different. They are easy to use and satisfy a range of taste. We have traditional flavours such as mint jelly and cranberry jelly but also more innovative flavours such as Ginger Hot pepper, Chargrilled pepper jelly and our latest Apple and sage with chilli jelly. Basically they are a variation of chutney or relish, therefore can be used in the same way. Originally I made some of these jellies at home and sold at the local market in Washington DC where I lived for a number of years. My friend’s grandmother used to make them, she gave me the recipe to try out and I was on my way. Having moved back to Ireland, I started again in 2007 to make the jellies and sell at local markets to test the market here. In 2009 I decided to venture into the retail side of the business and have been growing this market since. You clearly love your work and are passionate about it do you think this attributes great to the success of the brand? I am very lucky that I don’t feel I go to work as I love what I do. The interaction between food and people is what I love to

see and gives me my energy. I managed a restaurant in Tralee for 10 years which I think especially helped me initially as people knew me from there and supported me because of this. Now I am building on this and expanding so yes it helps to be passionate but you also have to have an excellent product that can stand on its own without you beside it in the shop. Harty’s jellies are now a household name and stocked in a lot of the big name retail outlets was it a hard battle to get in the door as a local brand? I can honestly say that in my experience there is tremendous support both from a shopkeeper and a customer’s point of view for the small person starting out. That doesn’t mean it’s not hard work as you are trying to be all things in the business at one time. There is a lot of work behind the scenes before you can venture into the retail market but local is where I started and it meant that if there were issues at least you knew the person so it could be taken care of. It was my learning ground before I went further afield and it still is where I test the market first with my new products. It also helps me to be from Kerry as we have a great reputation both in the food industry and in general across the country.

What next for Harty’s foods? We have just launched our newest jelly, the Apple and Sage with chilli and this is finding its way into the stores. I am delighted to say that we have been invited to join Dunne’s Stores on a larger scale so our jellies will be popping up around the country in the coming months. I have a pepper on each county on my website (www.hartysfoods.com) denoting the counties we are stocked in, there are a few counties without the pepper so these are also a target to expand into. Finally Melanie the lady that works round the clock... Is there a down time? What do you do to chill? Of course there is a downtime, it is most important to step away and rejuvenate so in the winter it is a sun holiday. I also attend food shows, I know this is work but it also expands the mind and gives you knew ideas. Cooking and reading are my therapies. On a daily basis, you can’t beat a walk on the canal bank here in Tralee that will take you back to nature; it clears the head and gets me ready for the new day.

Dr. Rose-Marie Daly I founded Kerry Paediatric Dental Practice in 2010 after my appointment as a consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. It is Munster’s only dedicated specialist practice for kids. The practice provides both routine and specialist care for children from infancy through to adolescence. I got my dental degree from UCC. I worked for a number of years in general practice, hospital dentistry and community. During this time I realised I had a special passion for treating children. I completed a very intense 3 year specialist training program and a research masters in Leeds which has a world class training program. I believe in lifelong learning and regularly travel

to the US and Europe to workshops and seminars to ensure I am always providing the best standard of care for my patients. The best advice I can offer to parents it to establish a dental home early. Most dental problems are preventable and my specialty focuses on anticipatory guidance and preventive care. In my spare time I can be found swimming all year round in Fenit.

KERRY FILM FESTIVAL IS 15 YEARS OLD!

At KFF office we’re busy planning our biggest festival yet, from 4th-11th October, with 3 days in Killarney, 4 in Tralee and screenings planned in 5 other towns. Film in Ireland has had an amazing period of growth in those years and our job is to celebrate both home grown talents and fantastic films from abroad.

With this in mind, we’ve chosen our “ONES TO WATCH” for the year ahead:

Standby: Alan & Alice have not seen each other since their romance ended badly 8 years ago. Reunited by chance, “Standby” is the story of what happens when your twenties don’t go how you planned. Brian Gleeson & Jessica Paré star in this honest and funny tale. Due for release in autumn 2014. Directors Rob & Ronan Burke are previous winners at KFF with their brilliant short film, Runners (2010) The Lobster: Colin Farrell & Rachel Weiz lead an all star cast that have been seen on location in Kerry filming this romantic sci-fi story set in the near future. Angel Numbers Hello Everyone. It seems a while since we last met up. I hope you are all having fun starting to work with your own special Angels? You know there are lots of different ways in which Angels try to catch our attention and one of those ways is by repeating the same things over and over until we get the message. For example; There was a time not so very long ago that every thing seemed to be in pairs. Two rainbows, two rabbits, two cats sat on my car,(most unusual) two rings of the phone and then it would stop; you get the idea. So I thought “ I wonder if there’s something I’m missing? Please show me one more sign.” and guess what? driving home from work that evening I realised cars driving in the opposite direction were also in pairs. A pair of red cars, then two with their lights on, then another pair without and a pair of silver cars all following each other. I had to laugh and thought “Ok. I get the message!” Guess what? the pairs stopped! When I arrived home, I went straight to a lovely book called “Angel Numbers 101” by Doreen Virtue and turned to number 2. “ Everything’s fine and will continue to be so.” it said. “ Keep believing, especially since your feelings of hope lead to more positive outcomes. The Angels can buy your faith if you’ll ask for their help.” And that was just what I needed to hear at that time. Now I’m not saying all sets of numbers are messages, but it really makes you think doesn’t it? Until the next time; keep listening for messages and just know that we have the help if we need it. Angel Blessings.

Randles Family Killarney

Celebrating 50 years in business

Kay Randles had a dream and that dream became a reality in 1964 when the Dromhall Hotel first opened its doors. originally from Co Cork, Kay worked at the Muckross hotel Killarney and met Neil Randles originally from Kenmare but who had moved to Killarney to set up his own garage, it wasn't long before they married and Kay was still pursuing the dream she had to own her own guesthouse. Mrs. O Connor, a neighbour next door, asked Kay to keep 4 guests one night as her guesthouse was full. Kay decided she would without telling Neil. And so the people came and went unnoticed to Neil. In the morning the story goes that there was 10 shilling note on the table from these guests and Neil thought this was the handiest money ever made.

These 4 people and the 10 shilling note set Kay’s dream in motion. Lots of changes were made to the hotel through the years but the one thing thing has always remained, family values and looking after the customer and delivering the best customer service possible. Sadly Neil is no longer with us, but Kay has raised the family to be very much part of this successful business and indeed of the many other businesses owned and operating by the Randles Family. So in 2014 the Dromhall Hotel will be celebrating 50 years in business. Kay Randles still continues to play a major role in the managing of her businesses. We wish Kay and her family continued success for the Dromhall and all their ventures.

TRAVEL

SOUTH KERRY There is nothing nicer than our own beautiful county in good weather. Here at Connect we have decided to dedicate our travel page to the Kerry area over the summer issues. There are so many golden hotspots we are spoiled for choice. This month we decided to take a trip to South Kerry. One the most famous and popular road circuits for tourists in the South West of Ireland, the Ring of Kerry, traverses the coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula, with a great many tourist sites along the way. Breath taking views, Majestic Mountain shapes, little villages full of charachter are found along the winding route of the N70 through the southern tip of Kerry, known as the Ring of Kerry. The 179km route is much travelled especially by coach tours, but that doesn’t take away from the scenic beauty of the peninsula. Running anti-clockwise, as the coach tours do, the route starts with the characterful market town of Killorglin on the sloping banks by the River Laune with the mountainous MacGillycuddy’s Reeks in the near distance, Killorglin comes to life for the famed Puck Fair festival in August. The road skirts the gentle scenery of Caragh Lake, a haven for fishermen, before coming to the small tourist town of Glenbeigh. One little treasure we found along this road was Rumours Restaurant, they have a delicious menu with something to suit everyone, serving all day breakfasts or mouth-watering cakes, and they have an

36

CONNECT MAGAZINE July 2014

amazing evening alacarte menu, definitely worth a stop on this route. The road then passes into Cahersiveen, overlooking Valencia Island and the birthplace of one of Ireland’s most eminent figures Daniel O’Connell. From here the road passes through the resort town of Waterville, and the world famous Waterville Links Golf Course, before coming to the picture postcard scene overlooking the coast of Derrynane, ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell and well worth a stop. We stopped off for an overnight here and Mary and her team at the Derrynane Hotel offer an outstanding service, confortable rooms with stunning views, good food and most of all extremely friendly staff, it is definitely one to take note of should you be looking to take an overnight in Derrynane, just up the road O Carroll’s Cove is a lovely little area with a fun filled beach bar where Ray and the team are so welcoming, it would really make you want to come back for some more fun, stories are told, characters are at the bar giving you the local knowledge, no place better to spend a sunny Saturday evening in Ireland. Next to the colourful little town of Sneem set beside a fast flowing river and then on to Parknasilla, a place of

charming scenery and genial climate where subtropical plants and vegetation flourishes. The Ring then takes you on to the noble Heritage Town of Kenmare. You could cover the Ring of Kerry in a day, but you would need two or even three days if you wanted to take in some of the more rural and less travelled areas such as Valencia Island and the Gael Tacht area around Portmagee and Ballinskelligs or the mountainous interior of the peninsula, that is known as Ireland’s Highlands. The roads here, particularly the Bealach Oisin Pass and Ballaghbeama Pass of the interior are fabulous coach free routes ideal for quiet drives or cycling tours. There is something for everyone along the ring, we have just mentioned a few, there are lovely bars, restaurants and even some nice shops in the towns along the route for those looking for a little retail therapy. So should you wish to take a staycation in your own county put the Ring of Kerry in your diary.

HURLEY FAMILY MUSICAL TALENTS RECOGNISED AT NATIONAL AWARDS

On Saturday 14th June, It was a great night for the Hurley family and Tralee Musical Society as they picked up awards at the annual awards ceremony for the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS), which took place in the INEC and was attended by just under 1,100 people representing societies throughout the country. There was a double celebration in one household as Oliver Hurley and Geraldine Heaslip both claimed accolades. Oliver won Best Director for his work with the Killarney Musical Society’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ while Geraldine won Best Ensemble, ‘Annie Christmas/No Matter What’ scene, for Tralee Musical Society from their production of ‘Whistle Down The Wind’ in the Gilbert Section, where she was Chorus Mistress. TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE NEWS The Kingdom Alliance Sportive took place over the bank holiday weekend and saw around 450 riders take part in Saturdays event which formed part of the National Skoda series. Brilliant sunshine was the order of the day and Kerry provided the magnificent scenery that we are used to but was fantastic for the hundreds who took part from outside the country. Day 2 took in the Dingle peninsula before those with enough strength left in the legs attempted North Kerry coastal route. A special thanks go to Skoda for the sponsorship, The Kerryman for support and Dick McElligott race director as well as the marshals. Kieran Ruttledge of Tralee Chamber Alliance said “This event is great for Tralee in that it brings hundreds of people into the town who stay over the whole weekend, luckily the weather was great so the County looked at its best and lots of positive comments came back about the scenery, the hospitality and the event overall”

Tralee Chamber Alliance to change focus to meet new challenges in bid to bring businesses closer

THE coming year will see Tralee Chamber Alliance change its focus to put more emphasis on promoting the business community in the town with a view to attracting more jobs to Tralee. At the second AGM of Tralee Chamber Alliance recently members were presented with a positive story in relation to the Alliance’s financial situation. Tralee Chamber Alliance generated €70,400 in membership fees in 2013 as part of a total income of €122,100. The contribution from Tralee Town Council was €47,500 and a further €9,700 was generated from Certificates of Origin. Over €84,000 was spent on marketing & promotions in a year that saw the town feature as a Top 10 Tourism Town in Ireland, retain the Tidy Towns Gold Medal, feature as a Top 10 Destination on Tripadvisor and become Ireland’s representative in the prestigious Entente Florale Competition. Members were told that it was imperative, despite the abolition of Tralee Town Council, the town should retain a strong voice and has a vibrant organisation to represent and promote the town. The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “We have had a very positive year and we are making great strides in achieving our primary objective, which is to make Tralee Ireland’s premier place to work, live and visit. This year will see our emphasis switch to business matters while maintaining the positive progress that has been achieved in promoting Tralee as a weather-proof tourism destination. We need to address the unemployment issue in Tralee by encouraging growth in all sectors through networking, lobbying and greater membership.” Tralee Chamber Alliance has among its short to medium term aims to promote Tralee as a retail destination, a hub from where to explore the Wild Atlantic Way, integrate new board members with fresh ideas and develop a Job Creation Strategy. In his presentation at the AGM, Kieran Ruttledge said: “Going forward we all need to be positive and talk up Tralee as the capital. We need to buy local, visit the wonderful tourist attractions that are on our doorstep while inviting family and friends to join us. Ideas should be seen through to fruition and ultimately, we should be proud of our town.”

CONNECT BOOK CLUB Introducing you to some more exciting titles this month from our Book Club Editor Kathy Cronin. If you have a particular book you would like to recommend to our readers email us info@connectpublications.ie

“My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult, is a story that reaches into you and grabs your heart in a death-squeeze of emotions. Picoult, as always, writes her breathtakingly realistic characters into impossible moral dilemmas that you could never, in your wildest dreams, imagine being in. This book was adapted into a film in 2009, but I would advise everyone to read the book, because, as always, the book is better! As soon as you’ve finished “My Sister’s Keeper,” you will want to read every book ever published by Jodi Picoult!

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Swedish journalist and author Stieg Larsson, is a truly spectacular work of crime fiction. Many of you may have seen the movie adaption of this book, and it is the first in the Millennium trilogy. What made this book highly enjoyable for me, was the richly portrayed female protagonist, Lisbeth Salander, a fantastic computer hacker and researcher. It is so rare now to see female characters in adult novels that are not copy-and-paste, moaning chick-lit cheated housewives, and that makes Lisbeth stand out even more. I would urge everyone to read this book, and get lost in the fast-paced, captivating plot.

The Shining by Stephen King The Shining by Stephen King – we’ve all seen the movie, but how many people have actually read this classic of the horror genre? When English teacher Jack Torrance is fired due to his alcoholism and short temper, he finds work in the Overlook Hotel for the winter. But relocation to the Overlook Hotel triggers a steady chain of supernatural forces around Danny, his young son. This hotel conceals some grisly secrets, trapping ghosts of the past within its many rooms. Will Jack succumb to these forces? This book is a masterpiece, and anyone who enjoyed the movie should read it.

“Divergent” by Veronica Roth “Divergent” by Veronica Roth was a novel I was very eager to read. At the moment, it is highly popular with teenagers and even adults, and has even been made into a movie! But unlike Harry Potter, the protagonist is female, and unlike Twilight, that female is not unbearably irksome. This is a popular novel that I can find no fault with. The plot is fast-paced, the protagonist, Beatrice, or “Tris” is quick-witted and brave, and the characters have that “stepping-off-the-page” quality that I simply adore. What are you waiting for? Read it, fuel your inner fan-girl/fan-boy!

Ireland’s premier emerging Arts & Music Festival attracts huge crowds to Killorglin over the June Bank Holiday Weekend

Girts Balodis wins inaugural Screaming Pope Prize 2014 up galleries in now disused premises around Killorglin town. Minister Deenihan and Kate Kennelly also met K-Fest Artistic Director, Mike Ahern and viewed the installation ‘Words are all we have’ that Mike curated with his brother Brian. K-Fest’s music programme proved very popular with visitors with most bands playing to packed houses and Hermitage Green completely selling out. Other music highlights includes performances by Soak, RSAG, The Vincents, Toy Solider, DJ Daithi and rising star and local Killorglin musician, Amano Miura.

The second annual K-Fest, Ireland’s only dedicated emerging arts and music festival, attracted huge crowds from all over Ireland to Killorglin, County Kerry over the June Bank Holiday weekend. Highlights over the 4 days included 30 pop-up galleries featuring over 120 visual artists; nightly live original music acts; secret cine club, workshops, debates, family entertainment and the presentation of the inaugural Screaming Pope Prize to Ireland’s best emerging visual artist. For more information, visit www.kfest.ie Mike Ahern, Artistic Director, K-Fest “The feedback we have received so far to the weekend has been highly positive with many visitors and artists describing K-Fest as the best Arts festival they have ever attended.” 30 previously disused premises (from old sweet shops to pubs and hardware stores) acted as pop-up art galleries over the course of K-Fest. As Mike Ahern explained, “The K-Fest ethos is to force contemporary art practice out of its current position of comfort and place it in an environment where it can be questioned, queried, admired and appreciated, demystifying the artistic process while creating a more knowledgeable viewing public with a greater appreciation for the Visual Arts.” The Arts programme also featured a series of debates entitled ‘It’s Clever, but is it Art?”. Entry to all the exhibitions and debates was free

and all art shown over K-Fest was available for purchase and in support of emerging art, K-Fest does not take any commission on sales. One of the many highlights was the announcement of Girts Balodis as the winner of the inaugural Screaming Pope Prize 2014, a new prize developed to recognize and celebrate creative excellence in emerging visual arts. Balodis was chosen by judges, artists Rebekah Wall and Alan Ryan Hall from 147 entries from both Ireland and abroad. Originally from Latvia and now living and working in Loughrea, County Galway, Balodis winning work focussed on painting the human soul symbolically using materials that are in essence the opposite to the ethereal part of our being, such as mud and earth, that represent human physically and presence. Runners up were Daire Lynch, Lorraine McDonnell, Cira Huwald and Fergal O Connor. The Screaming Pope Prize was jointly created and developed by four Killorglin based artists, Conor Browne, Neil Browne, Mike Ahern and Michael McCaffrey. The Screaming Pope Prize is kindly sponsored by Killorglin Community Council and Frank and Mary Slattery of Caragh Lodge. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, and Kerry County Council Arts Officer, Kate Kennelly visited K-Fest on Saturday and were given a tour by Chairman, Mike Dowd, to just a small selection of the pop-

There was also an extensive film programme overseen by K-Fest Director of Film, Neil Browne. In additional to the screening of films for all ages, the screening of the “Searching for Sugar Man” at the Kerry Film Festival’s mysterious Secret Cine Club, drew huge crowds. The spoken word programme, co-ordinated by Declan Evans, offered everything from Pablo Neruda to the more serious tone of poet, novelist and short story writer, Charles Bukowski. The inaugural Body & Soul Programme was completed booked out over the weekend and the free family and on street entertainment programme saw everyone enjoying music, arts trails, on street dancing and one of the country’s largest land art sculptures, the 160ft ‘Fish out of Water’. K-Fest Chairman, Mike Dowd thanked his committee and sponsors who made K-Fest 2014 such a success. “K-Fest is completely organized by a group of passionate and committed local artists, musicians, business people, educators and volunteers from all walks of life. It is a self-funded, not for profit festival, with the ultimate vision of establishing itself as Ireland’s foremost celebration for emerging creatives in the arts, music, drama and complementary disciplines. After the success of this year, we are already in the process of planning for K-Fest 2015.” The third annual K-Fest returns in June 2015. For more information, visit www.kfest.ie
