EDITOR NOTE Half way through the year already, wow that went fast!! This month as we are approaching Father’s Day, we meet a Kerry Dad who sadly won’t have the pleasure of attending a game or doing something dads usually do with their sons on Father’s Day, (but he certainly will be shining down on him proudly). Fionnbar Walsh and his family who lost their son Donal just a year ago to Cancer, has written a book which also incorporates some of Donal’s own words. It’s a memoir of the journey dealing with the illness and coping with it. If you haven’t already got your copy make sure you do. In Fionnbars own words ‘bring some Kleenex with it’ As racing season gets underway we catch up with Gold Cup Winning Jockey and Trainer Jim Culloty on life in the yard. We also have a fab prize for the next few issues of Connect, where one lucky lady and four friends will win tickets to the very popular Ladies Day at Listowel Races this September thanks to Chic Boutique Listowel. Our Fashion Editor Orlagh Winters also has great tips on dressing for the races. We have all the usual galleries from events happening around the county and some news on upcoming festivals happening throughout June. As we look forward to summer, we also welcome your input on what’s happening in Kerry, so do let us know. We have all the usual contributors bringing you their tips and advice on health and wellbeing, so we hope you enjoy. Till next time,

Donals Mountain, The Donal Walsh Story As Fathers day approaches this month, we decided to take a trip to the outskirts of Tralee and catch up with a man who has just written a book about his son. Fionnbar Walsh lost his son Donal to Cancer this time last year so he tells us how life has been for the family this past year and how the book came about.

zest for life but also giving some insight into what is normally a very hard place to be. Soon after Donal left us we received a letter asking us to think about doing a book. I at this point decided to show the diary I had been keeping and it started from there. So it was half there to be honest when they approached us.

Fionnbar during the past 12 months since Donals passing, would you like to describe the year in your own words?

Writing a book is not easy and when it’s about a loved one it must be harder how have you found the journey?

‘Whirlwind’ is the only word I could use to describe it, Since Donals message was first out there we have travelled all over the country giving talks at schools, transition year students, fundraising events and lots more. Up and down the country students have requested us to come and chat to them about Donal’s life and his message. It’s been amazing the response and no matter when Elma or I stand up to do a talk the silence in the room is deafening as those kids want to hear the story. ‘What a conversation he started’ all over the country.

Oh it’s not easy and it’s even harder when as you say it’s about someone you love, but I guess the book as it is as such is Donal’s Journey. It’s in a style of writing that’s covering everyday happenings, we have been very much supported by everyone and any pictures that were required or any other information it was just a case of go ahead it’s for Donal, again reflecting back to the respect our son has from many many people all over the island of Ireland. There were times to be honest I guess I thought do I want to publish it? But the commitment had been made so it went ahead and now I think it was a good decision.

Do you feel the overwhelming response since Donal’s death has helped others? Oh it has indeed, teenagers now for the most part feel its ok to ask for help and talk to people. I met with the coroner Mr Casey just this week and he confirmed that in 12 months the recorded statistics of death through suicide for south Kerry have dropped from dramatically, and he attributes this to Donal’s message. So while we know it’s not going to help and protect everyone, we are confident that people are getting the message and starting to talk. Was it a natural progression to write the book or had you discussed this with Donal? No it definitely wasn’t a natural progression. When Donal first got sick I decided to keep a diary and my main thought was that it may be something that could be passed on to other families having to face and go through the same ordeal as we had to go through. Nobody can prepare you for the journey but I felt that if there were some guidelines on what to expect next it may be easier. It was more of a diary dealing with the cancer of a child with so much

Just coming back to Donal and his life, even though short, it was filled with fun and laughter as any normal boy of his age, but for his age he had a remarkable faith and deep sense of belief in God. Do you think this has encouraged his peers to think that way? Oh indeed it has, I think in respect of his faith, Donal has made religion ‘cool’. By this I mean he made others his age realise that yes it was good to party, have fun and participate in sports, but it was ok to pop into the church and say a quiet prayer too, so I feel that this was another great quality in him. It certainly helped him on his journey and while there were days he felt tested with what he had been dealt, he also bore it with great faith. He was a normal boy though and a rouge that had devilment in his head, even having the normal teenage spats with his sister Jema. So he was a normal boy but with lots of special qualities too.

How one Son inspired a Nation. We Meet Donals Dad. Had he dreams for life? What did he want to be after college? Donal wanted to be a rugby player, sport was his life and he had great aspirations to be a Ronan O Gara, (and he had an amazing kick) He loved sport and that was his dream. Even when the sickness kicked in and he couldn’t participate anymore, he still went back and coached and inspired more youngsters in his local football and rugby grounds, so yes it’s safe to say had life been different he could have been wearing the red jersey of Munster or even the green one. You have been fundraising with schools and organisations this past 12 months what are the plans for the funds raised from this? The funds raised from all that has been done in the past 12 months and going forward will be used to create space for teenagers in hospitals and other support services such as Pieta House, Console and

other organisations that provide assistance to those who need it. They will feel they have their own space to heal and communicate. Many projects around the country have been completed already and more are in progress and the good thing is that the money that’s raised in communities around the country goes back in to those communities to help others so all in all its great to see the legacy that is living on daily. It has been 12 months but only seems like yesterday. His message is still as strong as ever. Yes the message is out there we get calls day after day from teenagers wanting to do something and all we ask of them is to get out there and do something, do a walk, a fun run, whatever as long as its living life and spreading the message that Donal wanted which was to grab life and enjoy make the most of it. I want to thank everyone who has supported us through our journey with Donal and we appreciate the support we have got from

friends, family, employers and all those who have helped us in our journey since. During this the month of Father’s day, what do you think Donal would have in mind? No doubt he will be watching down on me climbing a mountain on a bike around Molls Gap or somewhere equally as challenging, smiling down at me saying that’s your present Dad… I know that it wouldn’t have been sitting at home doing nothing that’s for sure. He will still be with me on that day and every day to come. My message to everyone out there and especially to all fathers on this father’s day... live life and enjoy every minute of it. CONNECT would like to thank Fionnbar, Elma and Jema for taking us into their home and talking to us about Donal and sharing his life with us. The Book ‘Donal’s Mountain’ is available in all good bookshops now.

Fashion shows and beauty shows, let’s face it, are a dime a dozen and can get a little bit monotonous -but not this one!!! Back by popular demand (this is their third such event); Sandra (Weardrobe) and Helen (Lancôme, CH) joined their products together to bring their clients a superb medley of fashion tips and beauty tricks. Footwear & underwear were also addressed and a beautiful selection was on hand from Walsh Brothers Shoes, John Dowlings shoes and Dan Fitzgerald.

Dental Health and Sports Performance

Marcas Mac Domhnaill

Sports performance is important for all sportspeople, whether in the amateur or professional spheres. After all, we all want to perform to our optimum level. However, did you ever stop to think of the effects that poor dental health can have on your overall sports performance? Athletes should be aware of their dental health status from a young age. In a recent survey of athletes who competed at the London Olympics, twenty per cent said that dental problems affected their training. This was mainly due to dental pain, broken teeth, swelling and inflammation. These problems affected not only their concentration and sleep patterns, but also meant that they had to absent themselves from their training regime, to get dental treatment. Sportspeople often concentrate on their training and their diet. A balanced diet is an important part for sports preparation but it is important to keep hydrated correctly, especially after training or matches. Many drinks companies target sportspeople with sports drinks. It is important to check the ingredients in these. Some may have high sugar and/or acid levels which would damage teeth if used on a regular basis. Indeed recent media reports have mentioned that milk can ‘revive’ the body quicker than other drinks, after training. The same discretion should be given to snack bars, regarding high sugar levels. Dehydration can have an effect on dental health, as bacteria in plaque do more damage when the mouth is dry. Saliva in the mouth can give protection to teeth from an acid attack by bacteria. Keeping hydrated will help alleviate this problem. This is also the reason why it is so important to brush and floss well every night because plaque bacteria will attack the teeth while the mouth is dry when you sleep. Infection can also affect sports performance. If someone has swollen gums which bleed easily, it means that gum disease is present. This is caused by plaque bacteria in the mouth and your immune system goes into action to defend the gums from bacterial attack. This is an infection which uses up energy reserves, which would otherwise be used in sports-performance. The same is true with a dental abscess. Mouthguards should be worn by sportspeople where there is a risk of injury to the teeth and jawbone. The ideal type, are custom fitted mouthguards which fit the mouth tightly. These are made from a mould or impression of your mouth, which can be done by any dentist. Stock trays (one size fits all) or boil and bite trays do not give the same protection as a custom fitted tray and do not stay in the mouth that easily. Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (GAA) are to be commended for introducing compulsory mouthguard wearing for all football players. Why suffer broken teeth and jaws when you don’t have to; not to mention time off work/school and the financial implications. Bí cliste agus tabhair cosaint cheart dod’ bhéal! In the next issue, I will look at cosmetic dentistry. Slán go fóill.

SelfConfidence Teen journalist & blogger, Zoë O’Connor, gives a perspective on Self-Confidence

Follow Zoë on twitter

Some lucky people are born with self confidence. Some people are born simply shy. Or some people are born neither. Most people just sit in that middle ground, but I can tell you some simple tricks to help boost your self confidence sky-high.

@zobo2402 or visit her blog teentimeszoc.blogspot.ie

It all starts with throwing away the whole idea of “people are looking me”, and just be prepared to be looked at for being that confident person (even if you are only pretending). Because it is only the minority - the ‘small minded’ people that will ‘look’ at you like this, and with your new self confidence, they will be the last thing on your mind. . . . crawling under a rock Even if you feel like crawling under a rock and feeling like you could set up quite a happy lifestyle for yourself under there, stand tall and let your confidence bounce you forwards. No matter how many look at you, just keep going. If you are still not able to deal with the looks, do it the old fashioned way and imagine everyone around you naked and imagine yourself in the latest designer gear. ( I may have updated the phrase a little…) I know that this was originally meant to apply to stage fright but life is a stage but this time you get to write the screenplay. scary . . . Let your newfound confidence guide you into new situations and don’t be afraid of new things. It may seem really scary now but can you imagine the first person who tasted chocolate? They must have been nervous too, but that worked out pretty well! It is all about taking that first step.

A smile is the key to confidence because if you look like you are enjoying yourself, people will believe you. And a smile can also boost your confidence because you naturally feel happier when you are smiling, putting you more at ease. And when you are relaxed, it is easier to look and to be confident. Or you could just get a massage at a fabulous spa, but whatever works for you. Never be afraid to talk to people with that new smile of yours. People can’t bite, this is not a Twilight novel.!

Never be afraid of new situations and always try to make the best of every situation that you are in. . . It is all about taking that first step and opening that door with a confident smile on your face. The world is your oyster, ain’t no mountain high enough and all that.

You can do it. Just raise your head up high and keep walking forward, because no small minded people will be able to bring you down from that. See you next time, Zoë x

Welcome to

CONNECT FASHION FIX clothes look good but the great thing about this fashionhouse stalwart is that they buy for real women. They celebrate 30 years in business this year and have been dressing women all over the country for that long. My own Mammy is a regular visitor, travelling down from Galway for another gem in her wardrobe. (You don’t need to wonder where I get my love of fashion from as the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree)

Ok so by now we have all seen the famous picture from Aintree of the lady wearing the electronic tag, this will probably go down in history of what not to wear to Ladies Day. I have just returned from Punchestown and although we can rest assured we haven’t yet stooped to the lows of the “fashion” of Aintree, there were quite a lot of fashion faux pax on display. Cue bad tan and towering heels! There really is no excuse in this day and age to resemble Willie Wonka sidekicks in the guise of Oompa Loompas. Before the day, have a spray tan done professionally. Chances are if you are finding it difficult to walk around your house in your chosen footwear by the time that you navigate the rough terrain at a racecourse, you are in danger of ending up in A&E with a broken ankle. There were quite a few disgruntled ladies about the choice made for the best dressed on the day but for what it is worth I don’t think that the photos did the outfit justice and in “real life” it was quite a stunning ensemble. Throughout the County and indeed Country there have been many Kerry ladies chosen as best dressed at the races and this really should come as no surprise. Why? Because quite simply Kerry ladies get it right! There is a reason why ladies from all over the country come to shop in Kerry. MacBees Killarney showed a breath taking collection at the recent Ladies Lunch in Ballyroe. From divine dresses to high society style hats this was a very special collection. Ok so I know models do make

At the ladies lunch the best dressed lady of the day was announced as Madeline Gentelman. This was really no surprise as she looked so elegant in her trouser suit from Jasmine Boutique . This is just one of the beautiful pieces that are available from this super stylish shop. Whatever race meeting you are intending to travel to this year, a visit to Jasmine is a must. The colours available are carefully chosen by owner Diane Jeffers and suit the Irish skintones to a tee. Listowel Races are always a huge event in the fashion diary and there is a great driving force behind this day Chic Boutique who have been sponsoring the event for more than twenty years. There are collections in this wonderful shop to suit everyone and I can honestly say I have never left here without buying something. “Finger on the Pulse” is a champion racehorse and this describes Chic Boutique to perfection, the brands are second to none. No matter if it is the complete outfit or the perfect accessory, Mary O’Flaherty’s eagle eye is sure to stock that special piece. No visit to the Kingdom would be complete without a visit to Hannons of Castleisland There are a few boutiques I wish didn’t exist and Hannons is one of them! Reason being I want everything there, this family run business exists for 75 years- no I do not exist for the same length of time, Cheeky!! From the perfect dress, coat, headpiece and jewellery you really are ready for the off here. Brands sourced near and far by the Hannon sisters display an eclectic array of fashion. Funky, classy and functional, before you enter the parade ring this racing season, enter the doors of Hannons. Until then, Stay Stylish!

HELLO THERE, I HOPE YOU ARE ALL FASHIONABLY WELL. THIS MONTH I SHALL BE DISCUSSING HOLIDAY CAPSULE DRESSING. WHETHER YOU ARE GOING TO FARAWAY LANDS OR HAVING A STAYCATION, YOU DO NOT NEED THE WEATHER TO LOOK HOT, JUST THE RIGHT CLOTHES AND ATTITUDE. WHILE YOU MAY BE TEMPTED TO FILL THE CASE, BRING LITTLE BUT USE IT OFTEN. A pair of white / neutral linen trousers or skirt will go with everything in your wardrobe. If the cut is right white linen trousers are very slimming, but please avoid the 100% linen as it does not travel well, opt instead for 50-55% linen and 45-50% rayon to avoid creasing. Cropped trousers are perfect for daywear and can be dressed up for night- time. Another must- have is the pashmina, which you can even wear travelling and use as a blanket, if you have a nap. So you are ready to roll when you land. Turn the pashmina into a sarong for the beach and a chic cover up in the evening. Think about your tops carefully, camis, t-shirts or vest tops should all be interchangeable to match your trousers/skirts and jackets. Tunics are a great buy as they can be used over your swimsuit or bikini, as a top over your trousers, or as a dress with your heels. A cropped jacket will go over everything and is always handy when the temperatures drop at night. The all-important maxi dress is another holiday essential ,often over looked is the humble white blouse, this staple can be a sun protector for the neck with the collar flicked up and transformed by a statement necklace for a stylish evening look. Your clothes are now sorted and the shoe addicts among you won’t be happy, but all you need are two pairs of shoes, flats for day and a pair of wedges or heels for night. Now enjoy the sun and sand and hopefully with this wardrobe you will be summer loving and happy again, Until next month.. Beauty Bag Your skin always looks amazing but so natural what is your secret to a good foundation for that look? Thanks I love to use the Lancôme Foundations, they have a lovely coverage and are easy to apply giving you a natural and long lasting look all day. They also have a fab range of mascaras. I use a Chanel Bronzer (gold) this is just amazing and I finish off with a light pink highlighter from Benefit.

What about the Eyes how do you get the best look here? For those of you who watch RTE’s serious crime drama Love/Hate you will instantly recognise our beauty bag lady this month she is of course gangland boss Nidge’s wife Trish. She likes to wear some pretty different attire on set, but Aoibhinn McGinnity, the lady herself, has told us that she certainly doesn’t dress like that outside of work, However Aoibhinn, 28, who has played housewife Trish since the beginning has agreed to tell us what are the musts in her beauty bag, what are secret tips for looking so well are and most of all, the products she can’t be without on and off set.

Well as mentioned above I just love the Lancôme mascaras, especially the navy one which is very unusual and flattering on the eyes. I love to use Mac Eyeliner; this is really good and makes the eyes look bright and open. Those two in my beauty bag and I am good to go anywhere.

Have you any secret beauty tips for our readers? Oh indeed…. Bio oil is super for dry patches, lovely to use and gentle on the skin. Also the 8 hour cream from Elizabeth Arden is an amazing product. However my best advice is set aside some makeup free days, (I love to have a few of these each month to allow the skin to breath

So Aoibhinn do you have a special cleansing routine Oh yes I love to look after my skin, it’s so important, I cleanse tone and moisturize daily. I just love the dermologica cleansers and moisturisers and my toner is rosewater which is very refreshing, I also love lots of BB creams that are out there at the minute.

naturally).

Are you one to have some home rituals such as Mini Facials or the likes?

Oh God no, I am not that into the home facials but I do enjoy a hot towel on the face at night to relieve all the stress of the day, and a good night moisturiser and a good night sleep.

Finally Aoibhinn do you like to try different looks so as to break away from your onscreen persona or do you have any icons you aspire to? I do like to try different looks, I think there are so many ways to do yourself and so many different products that it’s nice to try new looks. My favourite looks would be those of Sophie Loren and Bridgette Bardot, their make-up style always looked sharp but natural. So ladies we hope you enjoyed Aoibhinns tips and we look forward to looking inside the beauty bag of another Irish celeb next month. Until then

HAKE WITH MUSSELS ASPARAGUS, PEAS AND PARSLEY WITH MARK DOE

WITH THE SUMMER ON IT’S WAY, IT IS TIME TO DUST OF THE BARBECUE AND START THINKING ABOUT EATING ALFRESCO. FOR ME BARBECUING IS SO MUCH MORE THAN BURNT SAUSAGES AND UNDERCOOKED CHICKEN WINGS. JUST ABOUT ANYTHING CAN BE COOKED ON A BARBECUE AND ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALTERNATIVE DISHES IS THIS MUSSELS IN A BAG, ONE OF THE DISHES FROM OUR POPULAR BARBECUE COOKING COURSES. IT IS IDEAL TO THROW ON THE BARBECUE WHILST YOUR GUESTS ARRIVE TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO START WITH. SERVE WITH CRUSTY BREAD (WHICH I LIGHTLY TOAST ON THE BARBECUE) AND A JAR OF HARTY’S GINGER PEPPER JELLY TO DOLLOP ON TOP.

When it comes to cooking fish, most people have a real fear of it. But this simple and tasty hake dish is guaranteed to show you how easy it is to cook fish and will quickly become a firm favourite on your dinner table. Other white fish such as cod or haddock can also be used, but the cooking times of the fish may vary.

INGREDIENTS

4 x 175g pieces skinned hake fillet 200g asparagus tips 250g peas, frozen 1 tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 6 tbsp olive oil 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 100g shallots, finely chopped 175ml dry white wine 100ml fish stock 250g small clams and mussels , washed 1 tbsp flat leaf parsley, chopped Salt

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Season the pieces of hake generously on both sides with salt and set aside. Drop the asparagus tips into a pan of well-salted water and cook for 2 minutes until just tender. Add the peas, bring back to the boil, drain and refresh under running cold water. Leave to drain. Dust the hake pieces in flour and shake off excess. Heat 4 tbsps olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium/high heat. Add the hake and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown on the outside but not quite cooked through. Lift out onto a plate and set to one side. Wipe the pan clean. In the same pan add the remaining olive oil and garlic and shallots and fry over a medium heat for 3 minutes or until soft and lightly golden. Stir in the 1 tbsp flour, then gradually stir in the wine and stock to make a smooth sauce. Bring to a simmer. Return the hake to the pan and cook for 1 minute. Add the mussels, cover and cook for 2-3 minutes until all the mussels have opened and the fish is cooked through. Uncover and scatter over the asparagus tips, peas and parsley. Simmer for a minute until the vegetables have heated through. Taste the sauce, adjust the seasoning to taste and serve.

How to help your child be a healthy weight... When talking about weight, it is really important to keep the focus on health. For good health, children and adults need to be a healthy weight for their height. One in four Irish children are now overweight or obese. Our eating and activity habits have changed hugely over the past few decades and it has never been more difficult to be a healthy weight.

HEALTHY BMI

Overweight children are likely to become overweight adults. Obesity is difficult to treat, therefore early prevention is key. It can be difficult to recognise that a child’s weight is not a healthy weight. Research has shown up to 54% of parents of overweight children, thought their child was ‘about the right’ weight for their height. If you are worried about your child’s weight, speak to your practice nurse, public health nurse or GP. He or she can measure your child’s weight and height and calculate their body mass index (BMI). A healthy body mass index for a child depends on their age and is quite different to the healthy range for an adult.

SLEEP TIME

The first step in helping children be a healthy weight is to make sure they are getting enough sleep. There is a link between lack of sleep and excessive weight gain, especially for children under three years of age. Children under 5 years of age need 11 hours sleep per night, children between 5 and 10 years of age need at least 10 hours sleep per night and children over 10 years of age need 9 hours sleep per night.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

The second step in helping children be a healthy weight is encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes every day. All physical activity counts and children don’t have to do the full 60 minutes in one go. Physical activity should be fun and recreational. 80% of children in Ireland are not active for 60 minutes every day. It is important to limit children’s ‘screen time’. Less than 2 hours per day should be spent watching television, using computers and playing videogames. Zero screen time is recommended for children under 2 years of age.

FOOD

Regular family meals are really important. Families should try to eat together for as many meals as possible. Everyone should eat roughly the same food but portion sizes should vary depending on age. For example a 5 year old needs about half the amount an adult does. There is good research to show that regular family meals (where the family sit down together) can result in healthier foods being eaten, including more fruit and vegetables. Research has also shown that pressurising children to eat healthy foods may have the opposite effect. While parents should offer nutritious foods to children and provide structured meals and snacks, children must be allowed to decide how much and what to eat. Children may need to offered a new food up to 15 times before it is ‘trusted’ and thus tasted. Ideally children should be allowed to self regulate their food intake, eating when hungry and stopping when full. However there are several dietary practices which can disrupt children’s self regulation of appetite including drinking too much milk or juice or regularly eating energy dense snacks such as chocolate, crisps or biscuits. The website www.safefood.eu has an excellent section on childhood obesity with lots of useful tips for parents including some quick and easy recipes for family meals.

ORGANIC – WHATS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

Opening the proverbial can of worms I may well be but for some reason I thought this article would be a fine time to explore a little bit the whole organic/ natural/ biodynamic movement. To begin let’s try and be as concise as possible in terms of what exactly are “Organic” wines. The first thing to note is that there is no just thing as “Organic” wine, merely wine made from “organic” grapes! Organic is a term used in the way crops are grown. The additional techniques used in the cellars are what determines how natural the wine really is. Basically, organically grown grapes can and very often do become victims of commercial activities in the cellars. It’s the traditional winemakers one need to look for - those that use no chemical additives, etc. Many will try to use as little sulphite as possible but this often leads to wines that are simply too delicate for commercial purposes. Finally there are the biodynamic producers who are essentially natural winemakers who view their estate as a living entity and work by the phases of the moon. So is “Organic” within the wine world a good thing or a bad thing? Unfortunately there are too many poor quality (if not defective) wines on the market that get kudos simply because they are natural. Personally I have the greatest of admiration for all natural and biodynamic winemakers (or growers of any crops in that way for that matter). They work harder and more diligently against all the odds than virtually any other farmer on our planet, but at the end of the day their job is to make wine. I am fairly forgiving in regards to wine faults in many cases. Wines that become trendy for the wrong reasons though however is a bridge too far for me. It’s too bloody expensive nowadays to have to endure drinking of below average wines. If it is competing in the market then it must give as good as it gets. On the note of natural growing etc., I recently visited a Tralee restaurant where Chef Noel Keane has recently been appointed as Head Chef. Darcy’s Bistro is currently No.1 on Trip Advisor so I just had to see what all the talk was about for myself. Everything from the welcome received from proprietors Helena and Rose on our arrival, through to the delicious food and wines was something to behold. Noel and his team are serving some incredible dishes - from Café de Paris sauce (I didn’t know what it was either until I was told) to Lobster from their tank - the menu is so appealing. And the number of local producers that Chef Noel is proud to use in his creations such as Melanie Harty’s Jellies, Rolf Jongbloed’s Chutneys, Mary Glynn’s Marmalades, and a huge favourite of mine personally John Paul and Kathleen’s “Sasta” Puddings, is just a breath of fresh air to see on the menu in a local restaurant. Darcy’s also offers a selection of HOT ROCK dishes which you can cook, to your own taste, on a hot, unoiled lava rock at your table (best known at a certain Michelin Star chef’s establishment in Dublin - I haven’t seen it anywhere else until now). The wine list also offered at least 5 reds and 5 whites by the glass which is a welcome change from the normal one red or one white by the glass. Keep up the good work lads. Cheers

Legal Compliance Employee Manual Handling Training – Your Legal Obligation

Almost a third of all reported accidents in the workplace are due to incorrect manual handling procedures. Most accidents result in back injury, though the hands, arms and feet may also be injured. Many injuries can build up over a period of time rather than being the result of a single incident. The costs associated with these accidents and injuries, both in human and monetary terms, are enormous due mainly to the chronic nature of the injury.

CONNECT BOOK CLUB Introducing you to some more exciting titles this month from our Book Club Editor Kathy Cronin. If you have a particular book you would like to recommend to our readers email us info@connectpublications.ie

“Rose Madder” by Stephen King “Rose Madder” by Stephen King is a darkly intriguing work with one of his strongest and most richly-portrayed female protagonists since the legendary “Carrie.” This psychological thrill-ride into the darkness of domestic abuse, survival, and learning to live again follows Rose Daniels as she makes a desperate escape from her abusive husband Norman. “Rose Madder” employs a distinctive and fantastical use of Greek Mythology, as Rose purchases a strange and wonderful painting following her escape. Is she imagining things, or is she seeing deeper and deeper into the world her painting portrays?

“The Cinnamon Tree” by Aubrey Flegg “The Cinnamon Tree” by Aubrey Flegg is a great novel which takles many global issues, such as the damage done to ordinary lives by civil war, the bloodthirsty greed of wealthy and powerful countries, and human rights. The story follows a protagonist named Yola Abonda, whose marring run-in with a landmine leads her towards many different obstacles. This fantastic coming-of-age novel is both thrilling and informative, and will keep you turning pages until the very end. An enjoyable read for both teenagers and adults.

“Kisscut” By Karin Slaughter “Kisscut” By Karin Slaughter, is one of the greatest crime-fiction novels that I have ever read. Slaughter delves into the dark underworld responsible for exploitation, manufacturing and distribution that comes together to produce things that we never like to talk about. This truly shocking, disturbing and amazingly written masterpiece is not for the faint-hearted. Slaughter does what not many writers can do, and balances an intricate plot with a cast of characters so realistic that they could almost step right off of the page. One of my favourite books of all time.

Shane Finn, 21, and Mark Evans, 25, of WK Fitness, held the official opening of their new, state of the art gym in the heart of Dingle town. Attended by over 200 people and many notable guest speakers, the event was an enormous success. Attended by Mick O Dwyer, and others it was officially opened by Jim Breen. Shane will begin his adventure in Phoenix Park on June 3rd, and finish 314.4 miles later in Dingle. The finishing line, suitably, will be outside the WK Fitness Gym. Jim Interview with Culloty very much a feeling of relief, the celebrations tend to come afterwards. We all love a day at the races, a flutter on our favourite horse or jockey and the adrenaline rush as they stomp down past the winning post. But what’s it like for the Jockey or indeed the trainer? Well in Kerry we are lucky enough to have one man who has experienced both sides of this, Gold Cup winner and trainer Killarney man Jim Culloty takes time out of his busy yard to tell us about this and what life is like at the stables.

Becoming a jockey at a young age? Was it something you always wanted to do? Yes, although I doubted I’d be good enough to go pro. I certainly wanted to ride as an amateur as a stepping stone to going training, which was always my first interest.

Were you encouraged by your parents or did they have a preference to have you settle into a good steady 9-5 role?

I was encouraged, as long as I finished school and did my Leaving Certificate, so I had a fall back situation if it didn’t work out.

Can you give us some insight into the feeling a Jockey has when stomping home to a Gold Cup victory or the likes? As it is very much ones profession and carries quite a lot of responsibility and pressure, initially it would be

Is this feeling different as a trainer or is the same adrenaline rush there?

For me, I think more of an adrenalin rush, because, after you leg the jockey up, your role is done and it’s out of your hands, so when it came off I was literally ecstatic.

Racing in recent years has become a very glam event with Ladies Days being the social highlight at the weeks racing, has this had a positive effect in the true racing stages, has it generated more interest from people?

I think, with the passage of time, the general public seem to know less and less about horses, I don’t see this as a positive, although the social side makes lots of money for the racecourse, but they must keep investing in the actual track for the welfare of the horses.

As a dad of 3 would you encourage your kids to go into the family business?

It would be great if one of them wanted to train out of here, but there will be absolutely no pressure put on them. I’ll be happy whatever they do as long as they’re happy.

You have invested a lot into your business in Mallow would you like to see more encouragement and support from the government for the horse racing industry?

Despite the recession etc, I think horse racing is going okay in Ireland, it is an elitist sport, very expensive and so an improvement in prize money would help repay owners for their expense which would have to be good long term.

Tell us a little about yourself, what does Jim do to unwind when not galloping round stables and training gold cup winners?

Not much, it’s something I need to think about. Training is a bit like being a farmer, you work from home and tend to either be working or thinking about work all the time. I don’t tend to go on holidays which maybe I should. My idea of time off is going out for dinner and having a few drinks, but I still get up at 6am the following morning. A holiday would probably do me good!

CANCER:

PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION

It is understandable that everyone worries about cancer and whether they are at risk of developing it at some stage. In recent years there have been such significant medical advances that many cancers can be treated and/or cured. However, it makes sense that we would all look at what we can do to minimise our risk of developing cancer in the first place. REDUCING RISK OF CANCER

Avoid substances that are carcinogens (cancer causing). • Cigarette smoking, including passive smoking is clearly associated with lung cancer. However, the toxins in cigarettes affect ones immune system and, therefore, the body’s ability to deal with cancer cells. For example, it is known that women treated for CIN (pre cancer of the cervix) are more likely to get recurrence of the disease if they continue to smoke. • Healthy eating. By trying to eat plenty of unprocessed foods you can cut out additives that could be associated with cancers. It is only when you try out making home cooked meals that you realise it actually is not that time consuming • Maintaining a healthy weight. Research shows that being overweight increase the risk of cancer; most specifically breast, endometrial (womb) and bowel cancer. This may be related to the increased oestrogen in the body stimulating cells growth in these organs. It is important for people treated for breast cancer to reduce weight long term so that their recurrence of disease is minimised. The HSE has a scheme to support people losing weight through certain gyms if they are referred by the doctor. We all know how hard it can be to lose weight and it does help to have the support of a qualified person and to join a weight loss group- research show people do better in a group environment • Skin cancer is clearly linked to sun rays. However, we also need 15 mins exposure to sun each day for Vitamin D for our bones. Therefore, it is a balancing act but in general people should use sun blocks. DO NOT FORGET THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH SUN BED USE!!! • Keeping up regular exercise is good for health and helps to maintain a healthy weight • Know your own body. If you know what is normal for you and check out any deviations from normal you may pick up a “pre cancer” lesion. Regular breast examinations are vital. Leaflets on techniques can be downloaded from www.irishcancersociety.ie or ask your Practice Nurse when you next visit your GP.

Equally changes in bowel habit such as diarrhoea, constipation, bleeding from the bowel or unintended weight loss should be brought to the attention of your doctor. Screening Tests for Early Cancer Detection A screening test is a test that is applied to a large population to pick up an illness at an early stage so that it can be effectively treated. There are many screening tests available in Ireland. However, if a person is not eligible for the test they should not ignore symptoms that are not normal for them.

SCREENING FOR CERVICAL CANCER

Cervical cancer and CIN (pre cancer) occurs, mainly, in sexually active women and is, generally, associated with a group of HPV viruses in the cervix. A Pap smear takes a sample of cells from the cervix to be analysed in a specialist laboratory to identify CIN which is treatable. The screening test in Ireland is offered from 25-60 years, is free of charge and is repeated every 3-5 years or sooner if necessary. However, any irregular bleeding regardless of age should be brought to the attention of your doctor. As most cervical cancer is associated with HPV viruses, young girls in Irish secondary schools are being offered a course of vaccines free of charge; it is hoped that with reduce the pool of viruses in the population but people should still have their smear tests when appropriate. Women who did not fall into the HPV Vaccine programme could avail of it privately and can discuss it with their doctors.

SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER

The most important screening test for breast cancer is “being breast aware” and doing regular self-examination. Mammograms are offered to all women aged 50+ by Breast check. However, women who feel they may be at increased risk due to family history etc. should speak to their GP about whether or not they need earlier surveillance. Modern treatment for breast cancer is now so good that early detection is crucial. Any symptoms such as: bleeding from the nipple, persistent pain, appearance of a lump or change in shape of the breast should be investigated ASAP. DO NOT FORGET THAT MEN CAN ALSO GET BREAST CANCER

What YOU can do!

test screens for ovarian cancer-THIS IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE. At this point there is no screening test available for ovarian cancer. Blood tests such as CA125 and ultrasound scans are being researched but, at this moment in time, are not sensitive or specific enough to be used to screen. As a result most ovarian cancers present at quite a late stage- but are still treatable. 5 year survivals are improved by early detection. The symptoms are v vague and include: change in bowel habit, swelling of the abdomen / bloating, unintended weight loss, vague pelvic pain, and poor appetite. Always get symptoms checked out. Check out: www.targetovariancancer.org.uk

ENDOMETRIAL (WOMB) CANCER

Cancer of the womb mainly presents in older women after the menopause. It presents with abnormal bleeding. It is more common in women who are older, overweight and have had polycystic ovary syndrome. If women act quickly on any abnormal bleeding endometrial cancer will be identified early on transvaginal ultrasound/ hysteroscopy, D&C. SCREENING FOR BOWEL CANCER

I have already mentioned the symptoms of bowel cancer. A screening programme is soon to be introduced in Ireland. It will involve testing a stool sample for blood and/or having a colonoscopy. However, if anyone has a family history of bowel cancer their screening is often initiated at an earlier stage and they should talk to their GP about testing.

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE Exercise is beneficial to everyone but may be more important as we get older. Most of us associate exercise with the youth and think that as we age we slow down, take life easier and relax. It’s always good to take a bit of time to yourself but too much of a good thing can be detrimental to your health. When it comes to your body you either use it or lose it. If you spend the most part of your day sitting watching TV and taking the car to shops instead of walking then gradually over time you start to lose strength in the muscles that have kept you strong and agile your whole life. As a consequence when you do walk or have a task that requires a little effort it starts to feel harder. Unfortunately now because you have been taking it so easy you may find you’re slowing down and losing balance which can make you more prone to trips and falls. Some of you may think that your too old, too week or you don’t like exercise but the benefits of exercise definitely outweigh doing nothing. Exercise has a fantastic effect on our mood, its lifts our sprit and makes us feel more confident. From a health point exercise can help lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. It’s never too late to start exercising and the benefits can be endless. The type of exercise you do can be something you already enjoy or something completely new. You should try to include strength training (strengthens muscle groups) and cardiovascular training (strengthens hearth and lungs). No matter your age or your current physical condition, you can benefit from exercise. Reaping the rewards of exercise doesn’t require strenuous workouts or trips to the gym. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness—even if you’re housebound—there are many easy ways to get your body moving and improve your health Committing to a routine of physical activity is one of the healthiest decisions you can make. Before you get moving, though, consider how best to be safe.

as we age HOW TO GET STARTED

Get medical clearance from your doctor before starting an exercise program, especially if you have a preexisting condition. Ask if there are any activities you should avoid.

CRISPY GARLIC CHICKEN& CHIPS

Consider health concerns. Keep in mind how your ongoing health problems affect your workouts Start slow If you haven’t been active in a while, it can be harmful to go “all out.” Instead, build up your exercise program little by little. Try spacing workouts in ten-minute increments two to three times a day. Commit to an exercise schedule for at least 4 weeks so that it becomes habit, and try not to skip a workout Stay motivated by focusing on short-term goals, such as improving your mood and increasing your strength and energy levels. Recognise problems Exercise should never hurt or make you feel bad. Stop exercising immediately and call your doctor if you feel dizzy or short of breath, develop chest pain or any other symptom that feels out of the ordinary. TYPES OF ACTIVITIES THAT IS BENEFICIAL TO OLDER ADULTS:

Serves 4

600g sweet potatoes cut into wedges 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp paprika Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the wedges, put the sweet potato on a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with paprika, season, then give them a good shake or shuffle around with your hands to make sure they’re well coated. Roast for 30-40 mins depending on how crisp you like them. Make sure you give them a good shake a couple of times to ensure they cook evenly.

Strength training can be done from home with 2 small water bottles or a set of dumbbells etc.

CHICKEN KIEV Ingredients 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 25g garlic butter, softened 25g crispy breadcrumbs

Fitness classes keep you motivated, builds fitness and strength while also providing a source of fun, stress relief, and a place to meet friends.

Method

Walking is a perfect way to start exercising.

Water aerobics Working out in water is wonderful for seniors because water reduces stress and strain on the body’s joints. Yoga Combines a series of poses with breathing. Moving through the poses works on strength, flexibility and balance. Martial arts - systems of movement that increase balance and strength. Please seek medical advice from a professional before starting any type of exercise or nutrition program. Place the chicken on a baking tray, rub with a little of the butter, season and cook under the grill for 15 mins, turning once until cooked through. Mix together the remaining garlic butter and breadcrumbs. Remove the chicken from the grill and top each breast with a smear of the bread crumbed butter. Return to the grill and cook 3-5 mins until the breadcrumbs are golden and the butter melted. Serve any buttery juices, alongside new potatoes and peas or broad beans. Optional: Make it spicy - Stir 1 tbsp korma paste through the breadcrumb mixture, and then cook as above. Spray a baking tray with spray oil

Recovery Haven Cancer Support House

Recovery Haven—everyone has heard of it but how many know what it is, why it is or where it came from? Unless you, or someone close to you, has ventured through that door into the tranquil oasis of support & care beyond, and experienced the feeling of peace & inner calm it guides you to, it is difficult to truly, fully understand. To learn more about this valuable resource Margaret asked our Manager—Siobhan MacSweeney—some questions so as to find out more. Tell us the story behind Recovery Haven, where and when did it all begin?

How important is it for a county to have a facility like Recovery Haven?

Recovery Haven opened its door in September 2010. The beginning happened two years prior when a committee of like minded people joined together with the idea of having a place in the community where those with cancer could get support and information. This was really important to our committee because as this time many medical cancer services especially surgery had been transferred to Cork. The old Enable Ireland house was purchased and through great work by many, especially the Ballymacelligott FÁS, Recovery Haven was born.

People travel to hospitals often outside the county for cancer treatment. The journey is an added burden so when they need to get support it must be provided locally . We must support and mind our own especially at a time of illness. Recovery Haven is by the people of Kerry, for the people of Kerry and run through the great donations of time, services and money of our local people

What services does it provide to the general public? We provide caring and professional services in a tranquil, confidential environment. This includes a drop-in listening service, reflexology, massage, beautician, reiki, one to one counselling, art therapy, mindfulness classes, pilates, yoga, creative classes, walking groups, bereavement and men’s support meeting, wig fitting and various information evenings throughout the year. We also do outreach into the community including Killarney and Cahersiveen. All these services are free and are open to those with cancer but also their families and carers who take the journey with them In these trying times when funding is cut from all sources are you finding it difficult to keep going? Do you rely on governments to support or are you totally reli ant on the goodwill of the people? Funding is unfortunately an issue especially as we are not in receipt of any regular state funding or corporate funding. We are very dependent on the public and in the current climate, overshadowed by all the recent going’s it is a worry. We have been very lucky, benefiting from the Bons Secour & Ring of Kerry Cycle amongst others, and take every week as it comes. Does recovery haven employ many staff? We have two paid staff, Máiread our administrator and I am an Oncology Nurse and manage the services. All our other services are run primarily through the great work of our 93 volunteers with some support for our counselling services through a grant from the Irish Cancer society. I found walking around the unit that calmness one gets from it is amazing this I am sure helps a patient or a family member dealing with their cancer related issues? Is this one of the many secrets to the success of the unit? Absolutely...when an individual and a family are on the roller coaster of a cancer journey it is very important to provide that calm, safe relaxing space.

CONNECT MAGAZINE June 2014

It’s now branching out in to Killarney opening a new unit there is this due to demand or is it convenience due to the size of the county? It is really due to both. Last Autumn we did an audit of our service users and this was a common concern, the inability of people for various reasons to access the services in Tralee. Therefore we felt it was very important as a community service to extend it into the community. Do you feel the government do enough for these sorts of facilities around the country or are there more things that could be done? The government has really been of limited help to us as there simple are no resources available. If is wasn’t for the vision of the board of Directors, the time and effort given by our many house volunteers and therapists and the determination of our fundraisers Recovery Haven would not exist. Yes, it would be lovely if there was more government support but that is not reality. We have got assistance from the Irish Cancer Society to whom we are affiliated and local groups like the Kerry Volunteer centre, Ballymacelligott Community scheme, NEKD, Kerry County Community& Voluntary forum and the HSE What is your vision for Recovery Haven in the times to come? Recovery Haven has the potential to grow into a wonderful service slowly and surely with careful planning and good guidance and structure. I hope the centre in Trelee will be our centre of excellence for cancer support services in the community but that we will also work very closely in local communities. We are there for you if you need us… 5, Haigs Terrace, Tralee 066-7192122 recoveryhaven@gmail.com

of exotic breath-taking beachfront coastline and within walking distance of the hustle and bustle of the city. Honeymooner’s sometimes couple Dubai with places such as South Africa or the Maldives to make a fantastic two-centre honeymoon. Another firm honeymoon favourite is the exciting destination of Thailand. Try an exclusive Thailand 3 Centre experience, which includes 3 nights in Bangkok, 3 nights in Chiang Mai, 7 nights in Koh Samui for an even different experience. Siobhan takes the time to get to know her clients and suggests they start the honeymoon off with the relaxation experience first as they are generally exhausted after the wedding festivities.
