Hi everyone.
Happy New Year to you all and I hope you had a fun filled Christmas and spent lots of quality time with family and friends. The Christmas dinner is over and we are all guilty of over indulging on all that’s not good for us, so let’s get started together and get motivated for 2015, we have lots of tips from the experts in our new year new you feature so no excuses.
WHAT’S INSIDE CAR BUYER GUIDE P-25
COMMUNION TIPS
The New Year brings lots of new beginnings and for the children of 2nd class schools all over Kerry as they are now preparing in earnest for the important day in their life which is First Holy Communion, so we have checked out some of the local retailers on what’s available for the big day. 2014 saw lots of great things but one of the sad moments was losing a true and loyal servant to the county. The great Jackie Healy Rae lost his battle with illness but gained his eternal reward, we reflect on him as a person who was a friend to everyone. We also meet with Retired Emerald Elvis Mark Leen, the Elvis Jumpsuit may have been hung up but Mark is by no means retired and he tells us what’s next. There are lots of other interesting snippets and of course some glamorous pictures from all that’s been happening around Kerry. So as always it may be cold outside so snuggle up to the warm fire and enjoy your free monthly read.

Mark Leen
Connect | Interview
Recently we caught up with entertainer and household name in Kerry Mark Leen. Mark is most popular for his Elvis Tribute Artist career so after retiring from this role at the age of 42 we find out what’s next for Mark. Mark, you are a familiar face around Kerry, and especially for your Elvis Tribute, tell us a little bit about Mark the ordinary man? Well Margaret I am 43 years old, a non-drinker and non-smoker, I love to travel and I am happily married since 2004 to the love of my life Lynda Curley, daughter of Eileen and the late Brian Curley at Curley’s Garden Centre Ballinorig West. We both love to travel so we do that whenever we can, Italy is our favourite place, we have been on a few occasions, In October I am guiding a tour of over 100 people through the Southern part of the USA, Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans. I have been before so people will get knowledge of all things Elvis and meet people they might not ordinarily

my last concerts at the INEC with Elvis’ own backing group and the World’s No 1 Elvis Orchestra E.A.S. It was a huge success. I enjoyed being an Elvis Tribute Artist very much for 16 years in total, and I made a great living from it, I toured the World, met famous people who loved what I did, interestingly I recall Vernon Kaye coming to our home, Rocket Ronnie O Sullivan and Ken Doherty, Michael Flatley, Don Mc Lean, Anthony Hopkins, Bill Clinton, footballer Denis Wise and Hypnotist Paul McKenna who hypnotised me off the cigarettes and I have not touched one since. I was a support act to Englebert Humperdinck and I loved doing it, I had finished up Emerald Elvis in January 2013 and then the Mooney Show asked me if I would do one more appearance before I retired in April, I turned 42 in May, so I agreed and I was backed by the RTE Concert Orchestra at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre where I hung up my Jumpsuit for good, I remember the surreal feeling I had in the empty dressing room back stage, I shed a tear as I recalled how good Elvis was to me, and I thought I could hear him from his final concert singing My Way as I looked in the Mirror.
meet on such a tour, I have strong friendships with Elvis band mates and entourage, we will visit Tupelo where Elvis was born, the Grand Ol Opry and then the great Beale Street and visit the late Silky O Sullivan’s bar where I will perform for an evening. Silky had strong ties to Killorglin and he was a great pal of mine, he is since deceased but he was a larger than life character. You recently hung up your Elvis boots, Elvis is a timeless artist followed and loved by many, why did you do it? I am despite rumours to the contrary still a working entertainer; many people feel they don’t know why I stopped doing full on Elvis tribute shows in early 2013, the answer is simple really, Elvis died aged 42, and upon reaching that age I said I would retire my Emerald Elvis persona, so I cut my hair and shaved the sideburns and stopped presenting myself in that fashion, I almost felt naked without that look but it was something I had to do. It felt right for me to do that, I performed

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry No doubt you have other entertainment projects in the pipeline, would you tell us about those? Well I write quiet a lot of songs and my Christmas song was used this year by Marty on Lyric in the Morning as his signature tune right the way through the Christmas play time, Dec 8th through 24th, and I’m hearing my songs in many Hotels and other establishments around the country which is really humbling. Francie Conway and Christie Hennessy are great inspirations to me and so I have two albums coming out in 2015, one is of all original songs and the other is a double album of my favourite cover songs. I am overseeing the Elvis Rocks Weekend for the INEC/Gleneagle Group on Jan 9th and 10th, we have the best Elvis acts in the World coming to our shores that I personally was asked to choose, and the concerts will be unbelievable, anyone who comes won’t regret it, and I believe anyone who misses it will regret not going. I have been working for months on a new show concept with a Las Vegas Musical Director from The Encore Casino, he worked with Wayne Newton and produced the late Danny Gans who was the greatest entertainer I ever saw, I met up with him to see if we could work together, after viewing my performances, meeting me and seeing me live and on YouTube videos, he felt I had certain attributes which he wanted to see grow, so I have been rehearsing the new show for months now, and we perform just four shows. St John’s Listowel on Jan 15th and Siamsa Tire on Jan 23rd, DJ Curtin will perform along with me, we work well together and I love him dearly, he is the most consummate professional and thoroughly stand-up guy I’ve ever known in the entertainment industry and I feel honoured and blessed to share the stage with him. I was on Joe Duffy’s Funny Friday for three years on RTE Radio 1 doing voices so I’m looking forward to doing this again, except this time it won’t be political satire ala Mario Rosenstock, it is more Variety. I believe my new show is going to be my best yet, i lose sleep at night thinking about it, The new show is called “The Many Voices of Mark Leen”, It was DJ’s idea for me to come back and do this really, he suggested it after hearing me doing loads of voices on long journeys home from gigs in the past. You’re a Busy Man, do you find time to chill out and relax and if so what do you do? I am a practising Catholic so I find peace in that, prayer, rosary, the lives of the saints etc.
and I like to read a lot, I love good food, cooking it and of course eating it, my favourite chill out spot is at Nadur Spa and I love Driving Classic Cars, American or Italian, I’ve owned a 1956 Cadillac, a 1962 Chevy Impala and a Ferrari 308 Nero. I’m into shoes and fashion in general, being an entertainer fashion and the look is important to me, I have hundreds of pairs of shoes and shirts from all over the world. I love my dog Roxy and we walk a lot, she is an English springer spaniel and she brings me down to earth, I am a recovering Alcoholic and I have been sober for over 20 years, so I attend AA meetings regularly, I am currently over half way through writing a book on the subject of Addictive Gambling in Ireland and the devastation that this causes, it is due for release in April.
me to the World Championship this April as his guest. I often go to bed early and read in winter and I love watching programmes like Goggle-box and The UK Apprentice, big fan of Lord Sugar. What’s Your Wish List for 2015? To stay sober and in God’s graces, to travel to two continents, release my book on Addictive Gambling, to launch my privately branded label business on Amazon.com in America, to tour the new show to the UK in the Autumn with a band, to grow my company Rockman which hosts the big advertising screen at Manor West, to be in a fit and healthy state of mind and body, to spend more time with my beautiful wife Lynda and my family and to plant a Rose Bed and a Tulip bed, there is a tulip variety called Leen Van Der Mark.

KICK START KIDDY HEALTH IN 2015
In Ireland 1:4 children have nutritional issues. Overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults. So what can we do? levels high. A healthy morning snack at break time and one after school are usually needed each day.
The following simple points should be considered when planning a healthy eating programme. • Good nutrition is essential for school children. They need to receive a sound understanding about why a variety of food is important for their optimum growth, development and health. • They should be encouraged to have practical experience in preparing their own lunches and meals.
I spoke with Neal Murphy who will be running a Family & Child Nutrition Clinic in Tralee.
Neal how can we in engender good eating habits in children? School age is the perfect time for children to learn about healthy food and activity, as they start a busy social life, have pocket money and begin to help choose their own lifestyle. Children of this age learn quickly and are also influenced by their friends and popular trends. Children need a wide variety of foods for a well-balanced diet. The amount of physical activity they have in a day will be an important part of how much they need to eat. Some children of this age are still fussy, but, when busy and active, snacking is important to keep energy
• A positive attitude to food should be encouraged. Children should enjoy their food. It is important to communicate the message that all foods have a place in a balanced diet. Foods should not be labelled as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Food should never be used as a reward. • Research suggests that the provision of nutritious school food enhances not only the child’s health but also allows the child to take full advantage of the education provided by improving attention levels and concentration spans. • Schools should be encouraged to develop their own policy on healthy eating. Children’s appetites vary with age and according to times of accelerated growth, therefore, it is important that the food intake of school children should not be limited unnecessarily. Children need energy and nutrients to fulfil growth needs and requirements for everyday activities.
• Children may need three meals and three snacks each day to ensure that their appetite and energy needs are met. The size of meals and the number of snacks required will depend on the child’s age and stage of development. • Physical activity is integral to any healthy eating programme, and hence should also be promoted and encouraged. • Involving teachers, parents and older children (each important role models) in any healthy eating training will ensure that children receive consistent messages both at home and at school. *all advice here is general information for advisory purpose only so please consult with your own doctor for full professional advice on your concerns.

New Year NEW YOU Its January and it’s the month we all dread, time to start looking at getting healthy and fit, we have all eaten too much and overindulged in the sweet tin or the wine fridge,. We caught up with some experts to give us valuable tips to make it a little easier to start the new lifestyle. Shane Finn of WK Fitness Dingle gives us a few tips on getting focused and ready to go
Shane what would you suggest to get started? Just start. Starting is the hardest, think of how many times you may have started before or tried to start and you didn’t know what you were doing or how you were going to do it. So many people make the step and the start to get fitter and healthier only to quit. People quit for a number or different reasons. It’s too hard, they don’t enjoy it or perhaps the style of training is not fun. Start with something you find fun, which may be going to classes or group workouts, cycling or going to the gym! Find what you like and work from there! Set goals. It’s very important to set goals. Even top athletes set both shirt and long term goals. For example you may want to lose 4 pounds every 14 days, this is a short term goal. Your long term goal could be to fit into a dress or pants that you wore 2 years ago. Without goals, training has no purpose. There must he purpose. Having a goal to lose weight is simply too vague, set a goal and a target. When you reach your goals set new and exciting ones! Motivate yourself. Unless the motivation comes from within it won’t last. Deep motivation, the type that can change your life comes from within. The quick motivation that comes from watching a YouTube video or reading a magazine lasts about 90 minutes. Find what motivates you and use it as your weapon! Motivation to us is seeing clients and WK Fitness members get up at 6.15am 5 mornings a week to train month after month after month. These people are clearly very motivated. The people that get up once or twice for an early workout don’t have that motivation and never really stick it out unfortunately. Food. Food is fuel. You wouldn’t put cooking oil in your car and expect it to perform. You would use diesel
14
CONNECT MAGAZINE January 2015
or petrol, usually the best type of diesel or petrol you could get. Your body should be the same. Treat it with respect, at the end of the day it’s the only place you are really guaranteed to live. Clear your cupboards of processed foods get as much natural and single ingredient foods into your diet as possible and drinks lots of water. This is the big secret folks, but not enough people know it! Eat real foods and train hard and you will see amazing results. We have done so time and time again. People get real long lasting results.
Lifestyle change. The goal is to make a total lifestyle change. To stress less, people stress way too much! Stress raises cortisol levels in the body and make us store fat. Make correct food and training choices. Develop a better sleeping pattern. Most people don’t sleep enough and their health suffers from it. Put stress and not enough sleep together in the human body and you’re looking at a real ideal situation for weight gain and fat storage. Find what your ideal night’s sleep is. For some it’s 6 hours & others it’s 8. You should wake up feeling refreshed and ‘awake’. We try and make a full change to our client’s lives from fitness, nutrition, stress and developing a work life balance! The gym may not be for everyone so we also had a chat with Izabela from Kerry Pilates to get her advice on Pilates and the benefits to us.
Iazbela Pilates is an exercise which is good for both the body and the mind could you give us an idea of what this form of exercise involves? Pilates is a gentle mind-body exercise designed to develop strength and flexibility. It will improve your coordination, posture and increase abdominal strength. Pilates focuses on core stability. When your core is strong, it makes the whole body look leaner, more toned and your posture is stronger. That helps with performing everyday tasks, such as sitting at desk at work or carrying your children. With a strong centre and proper posture, you are less likely to injure yourself. That’s why Pilates helps to decrease back, hip, neck and joint pain.
People of all sizes, shapes and ages can perform and benefit from Pilates.
Finally we asked Majella in Curves for her top tips to get motivated and started for 2015 January has arrived ...our bellies are full, we are tired and despondent and the guilt of the Christmas overindulgence is rearing its ugly head. The buzz word is “New Year’s Resolutions”. Be sensible and practical in your goals. We need to approach 2015 with enthusiasm and challenge ourselves to make this the year that we change our life for the better. Think of lifestyle changes rather than a crash diet and over exercising. Make a plan, write it down...Make your goals SMART... Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Specific. Make small changes every week and let the small positive changes become the norm .Remember you can’t outrun your mouth!!... so no amount of exercise can compensate for a poor diet...Look at the 4 components of healthy living...good nutrition, exercise, water and a positive mental attitude.Preperation is key...if you fail to prepare you prepare to fail...try to be good at least 90% of the time but do remember to treat yourself at least once a week. Be mindful, take it day by day and live by the motto “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me”....no more excuses. May 2015 bring you and your family good health....Good luck...Majella Curves Tralee So really no matter what your fitness level or indeed your body tolerance there is something to suit everyone so think healthy think fit this January and make it a new year and a new you…

Emma’s product tips for a firmer figure.. New Years Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want to make and resolve to follow through on those changes! Every year, fitness would be a key topic in conversation for New Year’s resolutions and below are some products, tips and tricks that will help you achieve your goals for a firmer figure!
Dry Body Brushing
Using a dry body brush is an excellent way to aid in the elimination of waste and helping with the reduction in the appearance of cellulite. Using in circulator motion rotate the dry body brush in the direction of the heart to help increase circulation and aid in detoxification – improves skin texture and tone by desquamation (removal of dead skin cells) helps unclog pours leaving your skin feeling soft and supple and allowing your products to penetrate into the skin. Always dry body brush prior to your shower on dry skin for a more effective result. Body brushes are readily available in most pharmacy’s and department stores
Total Body Lift
Total Body Lift is a specific treatment for localized fatty deposits and stubborn cellulite by reducing stubborn curves and refines hips, minimizes stubborn cellulite and enhances the skins beauty. This product can be used morning/or night concentrating on the areas of gious concern by massaging your product in.
Clarins Body Products
Clarins is a well established brand which offers an extensive range of body toning, cellulite and stretch mark creams which have proven amazing results
Tonic Body Treatment Oil
Tonic Body Treatment Oil – Firms and tones tissues and prevents skin slackening by improving skin elasticity. This helps to prevent the appearance of stretch marks. It leaves the skin soft and satinsmooth to the touch and also helps prevents dehydration. Applying a small amount to damp skin, lightly massaging to the whole body or concentrating on problem areas
Stretch Mark Control
Stretch Mark Control , apply daily to targeted areas, Clarins rich comfortable cream helps to reinforce skins elasticity, prevent stretch marks from forming and help reduce the visible appearance of new stretch marks. ORLAGHS FASHION FOR FITNESS OH MY GOODNESS, WHERE DID THAT YEAR GO? So now is the time when the resolutions are made and in my case broken fairly lively. It’s time to hit the gym (she moans) Fear not though as sportswear has never been so fashionable and if you are going to resemble a Sweaty Betty, you may as well be dressed like a warrior princess ready for battle. As usual John Dowlings, Bridge Street, Tralee has an amazing collection of sportswear. The great thing about Dowlings is the personal touch that they give, a superb family run business. Whether it is the latest jersey or the best runners, get your soon to be skinny bum down to Bridge Street. A woman’s influence in the business is evident and Carina Dowling has a fantastic knowledge of sportswear and is willing to share it. She buys only the best so that her customers get the best possible choice. Henneberys Sports has been on the go since 1965 and it is easy to see why. My personal favourite in their store is their Asics collection. One of these days when I take up running I am going to look the business in my pair of Asics. Located on Ashe Street, there is always a lively buzz in the store and the staff are always helpful. The shop also boasts a wonderful selection of golf gear so any budding Rory Mc Illroys out there, a visit is a must. The Irish institution Heatons offers some great sportswear at

affordable prices. I have gotten some great pieces here in Tralee in Heatons. From gym gloves to Azzuri gym wear, they have it all. Also worth checking out is their sports bras as we all know it is as important to have a good bra as a good pair of runners. You could spend lots of time just browsing and you will be amazed at the value you can get here. Stock up on your sport socks as their prices are mind blowing. After all the over indulgence it is now time to make friends with the treadmill (ok so not friends maybe become reacquainted) Make sure and check out the offers on gym memberships and hopefully the countdown to the bikini body will be a stylish one. Until next time,
Stay stylish! Orlagh xx

‘THUNDER THIGHS’ is all clapped out Cheryl Cavanagh, a busy mum of 4 boys from Templeglantine Co. Limerick, was embarrassed by the nick name that she overheard herself being called by teenage friends of her son’s…… ‘Thunder Thigh’s’. “It was the final turning point that made me decide that I had to lose weight. Even though I had a loving and supportive family I had always felt ugly and embarrassed due to my size and tried to avoid social situations at all costs,” said Cheryl. An invitation to a wedding or party filled her with dread, what would she wear, where would she find that awful ‘tent’ that would end up costing a fortune and she knew it would still look dreadful.
unique’’. “Slimming World has completely changed my life. It has actually given me my life back, made me the woman I have always wanted to be, confident and so happy.” Cheryl says she has also seen many health benefits to losing so much weight such as no more aching knees and chaffed thighs. Cheryl opened her own groups in Tralee and Killarney a few months ago and was such a success has added more classes to both areas in the new year to help others lose weight for more info call Cheryl on 0892263767.
To the outside world Cheryl showed a happy, confident face but she was constantly sad and crying inside. “I decided to go along to my nearest Slimming World group and had amazing support from my husband Michael who decided to go along with me to offer encouragement. When I walked through the door I was welcomed by a warm and friendly consultant and a lively buzzing atmosphere. When the Food Optimising programme was explained to me I could not believe that I could eat so much varied ‘normal’ food and still lose weight. No counting or weighing, this was the diet plan I had been looking for all my life.” The first week Cheryl enjoyed roast dinners, curry, chillies and rice and even fish and chips. “The whole family ate the same meals. When I stood on the scales I could not believe I had lost 9lbs…..in the first week! This was my ‘lights on’ moment. For the first time I realised I had the tools to do the job. My ‘Thunder Thighs’ days were well and truly over.” Cheryl went on to lose an amazing 8stone 7lbs. She loves going to the group every week and describes it as ‘’one big extended happy family, the support and craic that you get at the group every week is uplifting and truly

The revolutionary body inch loss wrap from Tibby Oliver
• Removes fat from difficult areas • Non-invasive • Pain-free Shrinking Violet body wrap works by lipolysis, a revolutionary method to remove unwanted fat. The fat is removed from the areas you want, without effort or discomfort. The amount of fat reduction varies depending on your build, but many people may reduce by at least one whole size after the first treatment. Difficult areas such as the stomach, bottom, thighs, hips and upper arms, are a big problem. Lipolysis offers pain-free slimming and breaks down inside the actual fat cells where triglycerides are changed to free fatty acid, so they can be excreted in tissue fluid and further transported to the lymph vessels.

New Year’s Resolution:
Start a New Business Business Concept/ Product or Service: Convert your business idea from concept to an actual business product or service. Test market it where possible at farmers markets, at shows, via friends etc. Try generating sales, even small sales early, as not all good business ideas convert into saleable business products or services. Location: Identify a suitable location for your business. This will largely depend on the business type and budget. Tax Registration: Most Accountants will offer a free initial consultation. They will usually assist you with Tax Registration and Registration of your Business Name, very important, which can be done online. Business Structure: Sole Traders are the least complicated business structure and will suit most small businesses at least initially. Companies are more expensive, but offer more protection as they have limited liability and are better for high risk business models. Funding: Consult with other bodies such as LEADER ( In Kerry: NEKD/SKDP) or the Local Enterprise Office as grants and training may be available. Banks offer short and long term lending options but will usually want a detailed Business Plan, Cash Flow Projections and proof of repayment capacity. Sustainable Growth: Once you are set up, the challenge really begins to grow your business. It is extremely important to grow at sustainable level and know your limitations. Remember they will be plenty of ups and downs, so stay focused and remain positive.

Legal Compliance
The beginning of the year.... The beginning of the year is an ideal opportunity for you to review your achievements to date and to plan for the coming year. In reviewing your achievements over the past year, you should honestly assess business performance by reviewing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is important for any good business to review what hasn’t gone well in the past year and to learn from any issues or difficulties encountered. A few key areas to take into account during the business review and planning process are: • Honesty: Be honest about your strengths and your weakness – you will learn from both. • Vision: Have a vision of where you want your business to go in 2015. • Strategy: In order to make your vision a reality, you will need to underpin it with a clear strategy. • Objectives: Within your strategy, set out SMART objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely). • Teamwork: All your team play a part in your business’ success and they should all know what their role is in delivering your business plan. • Review: Ensure that you review your objectives regularly and keep all your staff focused. • Training: Ensure that you review your training needs and develop a training plan for the year ahead. As already discussed in last month’s article, the new year is also a perfect time to hold staff meetings and individual performance reviews to discuss business goals for the coming year and set specific objectives for each employee. Performance reviews are also a great way of focusing employees for the year ahead, identifying any training requirements, and boosting employee morale. The HR Suite would like to extend sincere thanks to all Connect readers for the great interest shown in our articles. Don’t forget this is your ideal opportunity to get your HR documentation in order in line with legal requirements for your peace of mind to kick start your new year. If you have any questions, give us a call on 066 7102887. Training: The Hr Suite has a People Management course scheduled for Tuesday 13th January 2005, which is an ideal opportunity to start your new year with a fresh approach. We wish you every success for 2015. Caroline McEnery, The HR Suite, Pier 17, Dingle Road, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland Tel: +353 (0)66 7102887 / +353 (0)86 7752064 Email: info@thehrsuiteonline.com

HI AGAIN EVERYONE WELL WE ALL SURVIVED CHRISTMAS AND ARE READY FOR THE START OF A BRAND NEW YEAR. WHILE TECHNICALLY WE ARE STILL IN WINTER, THE SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR HAS PASSED, SO WE ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO SPRINGTIME. BUT TO TIDE US OVER TILL THE SHOPS ARE FULL OF EXCITING NEW SEASON LINES, WE ARE GOING TO GO BARGAIN SHOPPING THIS MONTH. IF YOU LOVE TO STAY FASHIONABLE BUT HATE TO PAY FULL PRICE THEN THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR FOR YOU. HERE ARE FEW TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOU SALES SAVVY.

MASTERS OF STYLE
1 EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST before hitting the sales. Goldilocks wouldn’t have been able to run from those bears without all that porridge and you could miss out on some good reductions if your energy wanes due to hunger. Keep some fruit or a bar of chocolate in your bag and allow time for a coffee. 2 DRESS COMFORTABLY in clothes that are easy to change in and out of in the changing rooms. Wear comfortable shoes and also bring a pair of heels to go with dressy clothes. If you have your eye on a particular dress wear your foundation underwear so you will get the best possible silhouette. 3 MAKE A LIST OF ITEMS THAT YOU WANT and this way you will not be wasting time browsing in busy shops while someone else snaps up something from your wish list. Also try and make sure the item you want ties in with the rest of your wardrobe….unless of course you are buying a whole new outfit and then you can go for a completely new look for the New Year. If you are intending to match a sales item to something in your wardrobe, do bring along the existing item and bring it to the sales assistant’s attention and let them assist you in finding the perfect match. 4 CHECK THE OPENING HOURS of the stores/boutiques during sale days as these may vary slightly compared to normal trading hours. 5 REMEMBER MOST SALE ITEMS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE but this does not affect your statutory rights. 6 MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN and explore different styles. The end of December and January are the best times to buy for less as February will see the new spring ranges hitting the shop floor and you don’t want to have missed the bargains.

One of Kerry’s Finest It is with great sadness Connect learned the news of Jackie Healy Rae’s death, Jackie was a politician with great charisma who never forgot his roots. He was an ordinary man who worked for the ordinary person, but he was also a man that was held in high esteem down through governments, Jackie had many fundamental moments in his political career and at times was a crucial member of the benches in Government for down to the line calls that had to be made by reigning governments, His Son Michael now holds that same seat in Dail Eireann and, as we all know he is filling the shoes quiet well, but that is no surprise as he learned from the best. He was Michaels Father, his mentor but most importantly of all he was his best friend. He worked tirelessly for the people of South Kerry and through the years built friendships and work relations that will be reflected on for a life time, He was a peoples person, and always had time to chat to the ordinary person, a trait he has passed on to his family. We could mention things that he has achieved for his county and his own beloved area of South Kerry but this would not be right as he achieved so much for one man in his time in politics to single out certain achievements would not give him the due recognition he truly deserves. We asked our good friend and photographer Don McMonagle for some of his best images of the great man himself as we felt that no better tribute could be given than a collection of images from his life, he was

a colourful man with lots of tricks under that famous hat of his. He is fondly remembered by his family members and community of friends in his native Kilgarvan and all of Kerry. I think it’s safe to say that no matter where we all were or what we were doing everyone paused for thought on the cold wintery morning of Dec 8th to remember Jackie as he was lowered to the ground and sent to his eternal reward. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten and will live on long in the history books in years to come for his service to his county and indeed his country, but more importantly a little piece of him will live on in the heart of every Kerry person who had the pleasure of meeting him or his family. To his family we offer our sympathies and thoughts to get through this sad time, A true loss to our county, may you rest in peace Jackie.

STRICTLY COME DANCING
Over 500 people filled Ballyroe Heights recently for the annual St Pats GAA Club Blennerville Strictly come dancing event, it’s always a great night and local celebs, sports people and general club members gave their time to participate to raise much needed funds for the club, St Pats is at present fundraising to develop a state of the art all weather pitch which they hope will provide a training facility for other clubs and schools as well as their own teams and underage stars. Winners on the night were a very deserving Niamh Daly and Luke Mulligan both heavily involved in the club, competition was stiff so the judges I think were glad the final decision went to the public. Tim Moynihan and Joe Costello entertained the crowd as MC’s for the evening. Chris Shortt played hits into the night so there was plenty more dancing and a great night was had by all. If you would like to support St pats in their endeavours of fundraising do contact any of the club committee and they will be only too glad to chat with you

Just a taste of what’s happening around the county of Kerry for November. Call to entry for KFW Irish Industry Fashion Awards 2015
Well done to the biker ‘calendar girls’ who handed over a E6,245 cheque to Deirdre Fee of Be Aware Prevent Suicide in the Porterhouse Bar on Friday, November 21st. “All the calendars were sold and people were wonderful in supporting the cause,” Biker Deirdre Stack said. “We had a lot of fun with the end product and enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who supported us by buying the calendar.” The calendar, ‘Women and Motorbikes’, features women from Tralee, Listowel, Gneeveguilla and Killarney in scenic locations around the county. Be Aware Prevent Suicide organises mental wellness exhibitions in Tralee and Killarney to foster mental health and help prevent suicide. “By selling this calendar, we raised some money which will help a very worthy cause to, hopefully, go on to help save a loved one,” Deirdre Stack said. Deirdre said they had got ‘great sponsorship’ from businesses whose logos would appear on the calendar. Be Aware Prevent Suicide Chairwoman Deirdre Fee of Killarney said the money would be spent locally and put to good use in education, in the prevention of suicide and in fostering positive mental health.

Lovely Glenda Gilson on ‘Getting the Look’ This month Deirdre caught up with Glenda for her top beauty tips WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love all Clarins skincare, but when I pop into my friend’s salon ‘Top to Toe’ I often pick up a DERMALOGICA exfoliator. I especially love the Beauty Flash Balm from Clarins. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE LOOK? I’m into a natural look but I do love winged eyeliner WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BEAUTY INDULGENCE? Well in the job I’m in I’m afforded the luxury of trying different brands, but the luxury item I have in my bag at the moment is Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream. It’s expensive but it’s worth it, it really is magic! WHAT COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT IN YOUR MAKE-UP BAG? Liner! I love a winged liner and I love Benefit’s products. ‘Get real’ is a favourite eyeliner of mine. I love HD brows too and Kim at ‘Preen Beauty’ looks after my brows. When I haven’t got around to Kim, I maintain them with Benefit’s ‘Gimme’.
New Start,
HOW DO YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR NAILS? I’m a GELISH fan, again Ruth @ www.toptotoe.ie looks after Me.’Candy’ is a favourite of mine. WHAT IS THE BEST BEAUTY ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? If you get mascara blobbed under your eyes, don’t rub it off, let it dry for a minute and then get a cotton bud to just flick/peel it off. It’s great, it just lifts in one go!
New Confidence, New You
WHAT BEAUTY TREATMENT SHOULD EVERY WOMAN HAVE DONE ONCE? Microdermabrasion, it’s a great skin resurfacing treatment to rejuvenate and restore that natural glow to the skin. WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY SECRET? Always take your make-up off before going to bed. Never use wipes and drink plenty of water

PANFRIED HAKE WITH GINGER PEPPER BUTTER
WITH MARK DOE
Hake has to be one of my favourite fish to cook and eat. I love the delicate texture of the fish and the fact that it is so quick to cook. Another bonus is that it is wild and not farmed and is always amazingly fresh. You could also use cod or Pollock for this recipe. Hake with ginger pepper butter and crushed potatoes
1. First make the crushed potatoes. Cook the potatoes in a pan of
INGREDIENTS
4 x 200g portions of hake fillet, skin on, bones removed 4 scallions, finely chopped 4 tablespoons of Harty’s ginger pepper jelly 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger 80g unsalted butter 3 tablespoons rapeseed oil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
For the crushed potatoes
500g baby potatoes Juice of ½ a lemon Salt and pepper to season 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Serves 4
salted boiling water, until they are just cooked.
2. Drain the potatoes and allow to cool slightly. When cool enough to handle peel
the potatoes with a small knife. You can use the potatoes unpeeled if you wish. 3. Place the potatoes in a bowl. Add the lemon juice, olive oil and salt and pepper. 4. Crush the potatoes lightly with a fork. Keep warm. 5. Heat a thick bottomed or non stick pan over a medium heat. Add the rapeseed oil. 6. Season the hake with a little salt and pepper and place into the pan skin side down. 7. Cook until the skin is golden, this will take 3-4 minutes. 8. Turn the fish and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until cooked through. 9. Place the fish on a warm plate whilst you make the butter 10. Add the butter to the pan and cook until it starts to froth. 11. Add the scallions and and cook for 30 seconds. 12. Remove from the heat and stir in the ginger pepper jelly until it has melted and finish with the chopped parsley. 13. Serve the hake on the crushed potatoes and spoon over the butter.

Oral Health Resolutions
Marcas Mac Domhnaill Beatha agus sláinte chugaibh. At this time of year, we often look back at the past year and make plans for the coming year. People often want to improve their general health and this often appears on their New Year resolution lists. While this might suit some people, it does not work for everybody. It may be better to aim at making small changes to ones habits in order to gradually reach our goals. One way to improve your general health is to improve your oral and dental health. Small changes to your habits can give great results. Dietary changes are one way to help achieve and maintain good oral health. Sugars and acids are the threats to tooth structure. Remember that natural juices and smoothies, while a healthy option, can cause a lot of damage to teeth due to their sugars and acids which can linger on enamel. One should not sip these over a long period of time, but drink them perhaps at mealtimes where you can finish them quickly. There is a debate in the UK at the moment, where one side wants to remove fruit juices and smoothies from the one of five a day fruit and vegetables, for a healthy lifestyle. Keeping them for mealtimes, might be the best compromise. Reducing your sugar intake will also help reduce the risk of tooth decay. It will also help reduce the chances of developing diabetes, which can lead to damage to your eyesight and even to limb amputations in extreme cases.Sugar in your diet is used by bacteria, which then creates acid on the tooth surface. These bacteria not only decay the teeth, but also cause gum disease where the gum support for teeth shrinks back. This can allow bacteria enter your blood stream and travel throughout your body. They can attach to the heart valves or to the inside of blood vessels causing narrowing of these vessels. This can increase the chances of having a heart attack or stroke. All of these are facts that people may not be aware of. However, it stresses the importance of good oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene is a necessity for good general health. How to achieve and maintain good oral hygiene. Keep foods and drinks high in sugar or acids to around meal times. Try and keep to less damaging foods and drinks for snacks between meals. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride based toothpaste. It is advised to leave the paste in the mouth for 3 – 4 minutes after brushing whenever possible. Use an antibacterial mouthwash and dental floss daily. Visit your dentist on a regular basis. Your dentist is the best person to advise you on how often you will need maintenance visits to maintain good oral hygiene. It has become obvious in recent years that neglecting ones dental hygiene can worsen ones general health as well as leading to expensive dental treatment to rectify matters. Is fiú an ghreim in am! Whats new for 2015
The Glam Pod, the first salon to introduce HD Brows to Kerry, have again brought an exciting new brow treatment to Kerry! For those of us that have trouble re-growing our brows and need a little extra, help has arrived! Becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to tattooing, the technique of Embrowdery originated in Asia before crossing to our shores. Fine strokes of pigment are added to the upper layers of skin to create life like hairs, blending in seamlessly with your own brows. Results last up to 2 years and will fade naturally.
Is Embrowdery for you?
Virtually Painless, no ‘down time’ Creates PERFECTLY BALANCED BROWS To Suit YOUR Face Practically impossible to differentiate between Embrowdery and real brow hairs – no one will know A few strokes can simply be added to your own brow to create definition or extra length and thickness In most cases it can eliminate the need for eyebrow tinting Perfect for those who have over plucked or lost their brows through age / hormonal changes Works wonderfully for those suffering the hair loss side effects from Chemotherapy Easily maintain your own brows after procedure
Nail Fungus (Onychomycosis) can affect finger or toe nails. It becomes more common with age and certain groups are at a high risk of developing the condition – people with diabetes, athletes, people with circulation problem and people who use gym or communal swimming and shower facilities. Fungal Nail Infections are so common; it affects 1 in 5 people. The treatment options are antifungal nail paints and oral antifungal drugs, which may cause undesirable side effects such as headache, nausea, diarrhoea and can cause kidney and liver problems. At the Sanctuary Medi Spa & Laser Clinic we now offer the effective treatment of fungal nail infections using the new Ellipse YAG Laser which offers a solution without any uncomfortable side effects. The Ellipse Nd:YAG nail fungal treatment is suitable to everyone. A series of infrared light is aimed across the whole nail and the surrounding skin of each of the 10 nails, because the fungus can easily spread, all nails are treated even if the fungus on visible on only one or two fingers. This infrared light heats up and destroys the fungus and typical a course of 3 or 4 treatments are required, with 2 week intervals in between treatments. The treatment does not hurt and the only sensation that can be felt is heat throughout. The nail to become fully clear may take several months until the full new nail has grown forward. As with many other treatments, the Ellipse treatment is a treatment and not a cure. It deals with the problem that exists and it aims to treat it, however precautions must be taken by the client to prevent the infection reoccurring or worsening. The fungal nail infection treatment is now available at the Sanctuary Medi Spa & Laser Clinic.

Tips for Holy Communion We know that shopping for the communion outfit is not always an easy day so we caught up with Denise at Divas and Dudes to give us some tips on the perfect Holy Communion outfit. Every Boy and Girl wants that Perfect Holy Communion Outfit so to achieve that look here are a few tips to help keep that search exciting not stressful!!!
Start your search early!! Don’t assume that because Holy Communion is on in May that you’ll find your dress in April! Now is the time to start your search, most dresses are bought over the Christmas holidays and early January... Go shopping with an open mind!! Even if you have a specific look in mind keep your options open - I have seen it happen once too often that the one dress you wouldn’t look at ends up being the ‘PERFECT ONE’. Try at least 3 different styles before making a choice!! Get the fit right!! When fitting both boys and girls in my store i always make sure that there is ample room for some growth, remember there is still 4-5 months to go, there is a fine line between too big and just right so get that expert opinion to help you with that decision. Get your accessories to complement!! When buying the dress or suit I would advise to accessories at the same time as most boutiques have the perfect match in stock And this saves you running round last minute! Also for the girls ‘Whites’ can be different so be mindful that the veil matches the colour of the dress etc.!! Do not panic!!! I always say that there is the perfect dress / suit out there for every girl / boy so don’t panic if you cannot find it on your first day shopping - it is there waiting for you to discover it!!! ENJOY!!! I love helping my little Divas and Dudes choose their Perfect outfit, this is such a special day in their lives and choosing the right dress or suit is the start of this wonderful day so enjoy the experience and the excitement!! Happy Shopping!!!
