Dealing with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) What is PMS? It is simply the way your hormones change during your monthly cycle, a combination of symptoms that will usually appear a week or so before your period and linger until the first few days of your period. Type and severity of symptoms do of course vary for every woman but there is no doubt that the impact it has on a women’s day to day life is not pleasant. Each woman with PMS will have her own personal pattern of symptoms some of which may include: cramps, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, emotional issues, headaches and skin problems. The most effective way to identify if you are suffering from PMS is to keep a diary of any changes you notice coming up to your period, do this for 3 to 4 months, note how severe they are and how long they last as your doctor may need to rule out any other condition before confirming you have PMS. It is worth noting that approx 85% of women will admit to having suffered from PMS at some stage so you are by no means alone! A lot of women will also admit that they tolerate these symptoms every month as they are not aware of the natural remedies which may help with symptoms and allow them to go about their day effectively during this difficult time. Some of these include: AGNUS CASTUS: effective in dealing with breast tenderness, cramping, headaches and heavy painful periods. MEMOMIN: helps to regulate hormonal activity and reduce tiredness and fatigue. The ideal peri and menopausal daily supplement. Simply take 2 capsules daily. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, MAGNESIUM, B-VITAMINS especially B6 are other products to consider. There are also some excellent homeopathic remedies which can be very effective, worth asking about! As always food plays a major role in our hormone and overall health so be smart about your food choices when dealing with PMS, reduce your sugar, salt and caffeine intake as these can lead to bloating, mood swings and anxiousness. Look instead to STEVIA or XYLITOL in place of sugar and try some of the delicious herbal teas available. It is important to remember that insulin sensitivity may be reduced around the time of your period so try not to give into those sugar cravings as this will only make the situation worse. Eat regularly leading up to your period to stabilise blood sugar levels. Include plenty of high fibre and protein rich food such as wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts, root vegetables and fruits, to keep your digestive system moving and your energy levels steady. Drink plenty of water, rather than causing you to retain more fluid, additional water will stimulate your body to flush away toxins and remove excess fluid in the process. Until next time, stay healthy DEIRDRE

From Killorglin to the IFTA 's, Áine Moriarty’s Trail Blazing Career This month we had the pleasure of talking to Kerry native Áine Moriarty, founder and Chief Executive of the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA). Holding an impressive CV, not only has Áine produced 17 IFTA Awards Ceremonies, she is also a founding member of the Film Academies Network of Europe, lecturing annually also at the Digital MEDIA Business School in Spain for five years. She also founded the IFTN Network in 1995 and previous to that managed Film Ireland Magazine for 3 years. Speaking about her childhood and her life growing up in Kerry she told us “I was born in 1965 and grew up in Killorglin town where there’s a fantastic community of creative, artistic and musical people. I’m from a large family, one of eleven children. My father Seán Moriarty was a school teacher and he and my mother Mary had a small shop when we were small and ran a little farm outside town. I had a great childhood growing up full of music, art and storytelling. I went to the Carnegie school, which is now called the ISK in Killorglin. I started my first summer job at thirteen in a local store and later, joined the Killorglin Pantomime Group under the renowned directorship of Declan Mangan, and spent the first couple of years in the chorus line before getting the part of the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, and then Cinderella. I got a place at the Crawford College of Art & Design in Cork, but postponed taking it up as we had started a Rock Band called ‘ACE’, myself and my friends Donal Moroney, Susan O’Shea (O’Connor), Tom O’

Sullivan and the Jones brothers Mark & Noel from Killorglin and later Mike Galvin from Killarney. We worked hard at it for a couple of years. We wrote and recorded our own music and gigged all around Ireland and toured France. We got a few stints on RTÉ television but ultimately we never got to the next level as there were just too many great bands around at the time”. For anyone starting a career in any industry it can be a daunting experience but Áine showed a level of determination and tenacity that would ensure her success. Ensuring her positon in the business world she told us “I moved to Dublin and studied Graphic Design and got a job in product design. I got married in 1990 and then took up an Art teaching job. My friend Ger Nolan got a job in Filmbase at the new Irish film Centre which opened up in Temple Bar in 1992, and through her I discovered there was a small vibrant filmmaking community establishing in Ireland and I just knew I wanted in too. She told me about a job vacancy in their ‘Film Ireland’ magazine and I jumped at it. Temple Bar was the newly redeveloped trendy quarter in Dublin and I loved it. At the weekends I went to the new IFC cinema and also joined Filmbase’s filmmaking courses, learning a bit about the process and getting to know people in the business. In a short time, I became the sales manager of Film Ireland where I was focused on promoting the film companies and industry services. Then in 1995, the year after my first son was born, I decided to start my own company

called IFTN (Irish film & TV Network) showcasing and promoting the film and television industry. The internet was a new phenomenon at the time and I was convinced that this was how we could showcase Ireland to the world at large and expand the industry”. Making one’s mark and garnering position in a world where women’s rights, gender quotas and equal pay are still a relevant topic of discussion, I asked Áine on her experience of working in a male dominated industry and if she encountered negativity whilst founding the IFTA’s to which she said “Yes, it was male dominated at the time, but having grown up with so many brothers gave me a bit of a thick skin when it came to standing my ground with men at all levels within the business, so I never felt at any stage that I couldn’t deliver the same, if not more than my male counterparts. Regarding the IFTA’s, we got huge support and positivity from the industry and the business but of course, as you’d expect, a few journalists questioned whether Ireland was big enough to have a film Awards with a red carpet and Stars etc. It didn’t deter us and we stayed focussed and we rallied the troops and delivered.” As CEO of the IFTA’S and a sitting member of the Kerry International Film Festival, Áine’s position in the film and television industry is influential in bringing production to Ireland and more specifically, Kerry. She told us

James Hickey, Áine Moriarty, Jim Sheridan & Ken Loach

“I’m passionate about helping to develop film and the film industry in Kerry and I’m delighted to be part of the Kerry county council’s ‘Film in Kerry Steering Group’ chaired by Moira Murell and with other powerhouses such as Kate Kennelly and Siobhán O’Sullivan who is the Kerry film development officer. The filmmaking industry in Ireland has become an important business for the Irish economy, and Kerry is so well placed to attract a slice of that filmmaking business into the country. We have stunning scenery here in Kerry and a wealth of creative talent in the county and we need to ensure that they have every opportunity to grow and succeed internationally. We’ve already got off to a good start with the movie ‘Joy Ride’ filmed in Kerry, starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman and directed by IFTA winner Eimer Reynolds and written by our very own Kerry woman Ailbhe Keogan. I’m delighted also be an active Board member of the ‘Kerry International Film Festival’ alongside Ailbhe and Grace O’Donnell and Aileen Garvey, as this festival is a very important platform for Kerry to engage with filmmakers from around the world and bring their attention to Kerry”. When we think of awards ceremonies it evokes images of glamour, red carpets and A-list celebrities. But never would we consider the work it takes to achieve a flawless night of celebration. Asking Áine about her personal highlights of the IFTA’s she said “For me there have been so many highlights through the years connected with reaching each milestone of growth along the way. Our Academy Learning programme allows young filmmaker’s attend our Masterclasses and Discussions with leading international professionals and a highlight for me was having Martin Scorsese with us in Dublin to do and IFTA Masterclass. With regards to the Awards over the past 18 years, the big highlight is delivering the big one, the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award to the very worthy recipients. We have now honoured 23 industry veterans for their lifetime body of work and achievement in the industry.

8

People like Maureen O’Hara, John Boorman, David Kelly, Fionnula Flanagan, Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, Gay Byrne, Niall Tóibín, Nuala Moiselle, Brendan O’Carroll, George Morrison and Ros Hubbard for example. Some of them have passed away since then so we are delighted to have given them that recognition from their peers and from their home industry”. It is almost impossible to talk to anyone in any industry without mentioning the last 18 months. The global pandemic has affected everyone on personal and economic levels never before seen on such a large scale in our modern world. Awards ceremonies are no exception, in times when we were made to stay apart there would be no red carpet mingling or sold out auditoriums, so how did Áine navigate these challenges? “Like every other business we found it so hard initially but then we got our heads down and started doing our weekly Learning & Mentoring programme of masterclasses, panel discussions up online in our Academy Hub, using Zoom as our platform for hosting the events. We have 1,260 Academy members, and most of them were at home as production had shut down, so they were so relieved to have the IFTA Academy Learning events to distract them from the pandemic and the outside world. We reached out to professionals within our peer Academies in the US and elsewhere to share their knowledge and expertise with our members during the pandemic, and they embraced the opportunity – it was so inspiring. When we launched the virtual IFTA ceremony it was just fantastic, the positive feedback was extraordinary, everyone really got behind it. We invited international stars to present an award virtually and they all got stuck in and really enjoyed doing it too. Like so many other industries, we all had to work harder and rally together to raise people’s spirits during the intense lockdown”. With unpredictable lockdowns, the ever changing landscape of cinema and film production is evolving fast with streaming options becoming the norm. I asked Áine her view on this to which she said

mass audiences. Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney have broken that mould and the studios are now investing a lion’s share of their spend on the pay-per-view and the streaming platforms. Ultimately, that is good news for Ireland, as the big players are all looking for diverse content; films, dramas, documentaries; animation etc. and Ireland is so well-placed to service a key slice of this market and can access multiple international funding partners to deliver this, we just need to ensure we have the infrastructure in place and studio space to deliver this”. With such an accomplished career it is hard to imagine that there is nothing Áine does that does not turn to gold! Rounding up our conversation, I asked Áine about her future goals in her business and personal life to which she told me “With the Academy, we are coming towards our 20th Anniversary, which is exciting, with our Member’s Hub, Learning events and award ceremonies, and we have built up an extensive Archive of footage, images, letters and communications which means there is now a strong legacy for future creative generations to draw from and be inspired. That is a good feeling. In my personal life my children are grown up now and no longer living at home, so my husband and I have more free time to explore the next chapter of our lives together, which is also exciting. After this Pandemic, I’m sure like everyone else, our health is always in focus as we don’t know what’s around the corner and we have to be grateful for every day. I spent a lot of time during the lockdown at home in Kerry working remotely and got to have quality time with my mum too, who is 87. I also have my Kerry accent back now which I love. I’m convinced that Kerry and the Reeks district is the most captivating and beautiful part of the world. Although I’m now back to the office in Dublin, I’m determined to get home to Kerry as many weekends as possible and to work remotely when I can”. Whatever the future holds for Áine, she can be proud of her achievements thus far. Putting Kerry on a global map in a highly competitive industry, making waves and opening doors for women in the world of business, she has demonstrated that with the right attitude and determination, just about anything can be achieved.

“I suppose the big challenge here is for the Cinemas in the long-term and that whole communal experience of watching a film on the big screen in a dark auditorium. Cinema is no longer the crucial component for a Film to be a commercial success and to reach

Romy Birdthistle, Makeup Aritst, Educator and Owner of Paradise Salon & Academy

Back to Basics As a makeup artist and educator one thing that I am asked all of the time is what foundation I recommend and how to pick the right foundation for your skin. Here's my Pro tips on how to get the right one for you

It all starts with the brush One of my top tips in achieving flawless foundation, is in the application!. Get your hands on a dense flat top brush or domed brush. It will be a real game changer for you! I love this Kabuki Queen brush set from Nima brush, Great additions to any makeup bag

To maintain your look for longer, it’s all about priming. Make sure you’re hydrating your skin beforehand, moisture is your foundation's friend. Foundation stays put longer if it has hydration underneath to hold on to. Use a face cream like MAC Strobe Cream and a hydrating spray like MAC Fix+ before, after and throughout the day to keep you base in place.

Use the right base Skincare is key to a great flawless foundation. Serums, moisturisers, facial oils and primers will all support your foundation for a smoother, long-wearing finish. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to help care for your skin while you wear your foundation. I love this Shiseido refining makeup primer, it primes skin and erases imperfections

How to apply foundation for a long-lasting finish If you're applying your foundation first thing in the morning, then ideally you want it to stay put for the rest of the day. But, between sweat, humidity, oily skin and oxidisation, the foundation slip and slide can mean by the time you leave work you're bare-faced all over again. ' 18 18

Keep the shine down the center of your nose and on the apples of your cheeks when brushing on setting powder or using blotting papers so skin still looks like skin I like to use a loose translucent setting powder with a fluffy brush for a light finish. Or a powder puff for more of a matte finish. If I use a powder puff I always follow with a fluffy brush over the face to make sure I remove any excess powder. One of my favourites is the Poudre Universal by Chanel in Natural 30

Anne Barry Holistic Healing With alternative and less invasive therapies gaining popularity in recent years, we are extremely lucky to have a natural born healer right here on our doorstep in Kerry. Anne Barry comes from generations of natural healers, a very rare gift born within her. With a large clientele based on word of mouth alone, the natural step forward was for Anne to establish a business premises. “Anne Barry Holistic Healing” opened its doors September 1st on New Street in Caherciveen. Speaking to Anne about her background in healing she said “My maternal grandmother was a natural healer and as a child I use to spend my time with my pets healing them. But it was the day my daughter Haley got diagnosed with epilepsy that my mum told me about her mother and how she healed so many people in her time, she told me I had the same gift, that I should go and do reflexology in order to help Haley. One night Haley had a bad seizure, my heart froze. I remember what mum said to me about having a healing gift so I put my hands on her head and said a prayer and hoped for the best. I started to see bright lights coming out of my hands and into Haley’s head and the seizures stopped. Haley went from 20 seizures a day down to a few a month”. Anne is a registered reflexologist with IRIL. Services offered include; psychic readings such as angel and tarot cards, reflexology, access bars, hypnosis and reiki. Anne’s hypnotherapy treatment is credited with treating trauma and addictions whilst helping with weight loss. All appointments are private and can also be accommodated with online readings worldwide. Alongside her private practice, Anne very generously volunteers her time and gift in local hospitals and Recovery Haven, working alongside people suffering with cancer to offer them some comfort in such a traumatic time. Speaking about her volunteer work, Anne told us “I did a lot of volunteer work for hospitals and Recovery Haven, working on amazing cancer patients. I loved it because I really love working with people, it was always my dream to help others where and when I could. So now my daughter is 13 and its time for me to open up and help as much people as I can. This is my journey; I know my daughter has suffered so much with her seizures but if she didn’t have epilepsy who knows what I would be doing with my life. So no matter how hard life is we have to walk that journey and make the best of it”. For further information, you can contact Anne on 0871656611 or email annebarryhealing@gmail.com

and a leather jacket. I just love the juxtaposition of a girly dress and how a pair of chunky black biker boots toughen up this look. Also, for a more sophisticated look, a light trench coat is another great piece for this time of year. It can be thrown over a dress, tee, shirt, you name it! In terms of outerwear, a good blazer, leather jacket and a trench coat are such great building blocks for any wardrobe.

Hey everyone! This month’s article is all about Autumnal dressing! I am going to cover transitional dressing at this time of year, Autumn trends and staples. Autumn/Winter is my absolute favourite time of the year for fashion! Knitwear, coats, hats, scarves – you name it, I love it all! I feel it is a time where you can really be creative, show your individual style and dress the hell up!

October can be a tricky time to dress, as its not cold enough for a woolly jumper, but too cold for just a tee. The trick for transitional dressing in Autumn is layering. Don’t go packing all your summer gear away just yet! So, when you are wearing your jeans and tee, just pair it with a blazer to keep the chill off and really smarten up your look. You can also wear your pretty summer dress with a pair Blazer of chunky black boots

Speaking of your wardrobe - I’d definitely recommend taking the time now to go through your closet, organise it and see what you have. Is it time consuming? Yes! Painful? Yes! But it is also so satisfying when you’re done! In short - shop your own wardrobe first, weed out the stuff you know you’ll never wear and identify what your wardrobe is missing. Which segways nicely into my next topic – Autumn/ Winter Staples. If you are on the hunt for some new pieces, September/October is the best time to buy them. You might not be ready to wear certain items of clothing, but now is when you will have a great selection in terms of styles and sizes - before all the best stuff sell out! A good pair of sunglasses are not just a summer wardrobe staple, they are an all-year round, must have essential! It could be the darkest, grimmest day and I’ll have a pair of sunglasses on me, especially when driving. They protect your eyes and also the delicate skin around your eyes. Let’s try and avoid the fine lines, eh? Besides the practicality of them, they elevate any look, are so chic and hide a multitude!

Sunglasses

In terms of outerwear, I already mentioned how a good blazer, leather jacket and trench will work hard in your wardrobe. But let’s not forget, a good winter coat is a must have.! I recommend keeping it neutral - a gorgeous camel colour or classic black, that’s versatile and will go with everything. Invest in good quality and Puffer Coat from you will have it for years to Hannons €189 come. Buy once and buy well! For a more casual style, the puffer coat is still huge this season. Designers have recognised that mid/ post pandemic, comfort and practicality are key to consumers.

comfy, look like real leather and are so flattering. Definitely, a way better buy than the Spanx leggings. I have both and there is no comparison. Dress these leggings up with heels, or equally you can wear with trainers and a woolly jumper. I got mine from Brown Thomas. Autumn means one thing – sweater weather! And who doesn’t love knitwear? It is cosy, comfortable and like the sunglasses, can hide a multitude! There are many knitwear trends this Autumn/Winter - big bold prints, more detailed elevated styles and the ‘Après ski’ trend is huge, with the Fairisle pattern Green jumper dress being very prevalent! But from Effigy Tralee again, when thinking of €69.95 wardrobe staples, think neutral and look for good quality fabrics. I think my favourite outfit at this time of year is the jumper dress. You literally throw it on and you’re good to go. No muss, or fuss! Also, this season, the knitted midi skirt will be everywhere. I personally prefer the jumper dress, for aforementioned reasons!

I am a little bit obsessed with boots! But realistically, you only need a pair of flat and mid to high heeled black ankle boots and maybe a pair of tan boots. I also love a pair of knee-high boots, but for the purpose of this article, let’s keep it to a modest minimum! I’d always recommend going for leather footwear, rather than man made materials. Leather footwear is more comfortable, more durable and will mould to the shape of your foot, giving you a better fit. Its just better for your feet!

My top tip for knitwear, is to invest in a debobbler! They cost about 20 cuid and will keep your knitwear looking like brand new!

No wardrobe is complete in my opinion, without a pair of faux leather leggings/ trousers. You can find them almost anywhere, but I am going to mention two types. Zara do a fantastic faux leather pants for €19.95 and they have them in every colour. Size up, as like everything in Zara, the sizing is teeny tiny! For Winter Coat

Another wardrobe staple is your handbag. Like footwear, I’d always invest in a leather option. You can go designer, boutique or high street, but whatever your budget, keep it simple and functional!

Lastly – a good LBD (little black dress) – need I say more!? An absolute essential! Zara Faux Leather Pants €19.95

a pair of sleek, tight faux leather leggings, I cannot talk about the Commando ones more. They are pricey at €99, but I have mine over four years and LIVE in them. They are super 24

Hope you enjoyed this article guys. Keep an eye on my Facebook and Instagram to see how I style my Autumnal outfits. For any fashion or beauty queries, please email laurahollystylist1@gmail.com Laura xxx

Roger Harty EyeCare

Amazing things started to happen in Ireland in 1986 – For instance it was the year that thousands of people flocked to Ballinspittle in Co Cork to visit the moving statues. November 11 1986 was also the year that Roger Harty Opticians opened for business to serve the people of Kerry and beyond with expert eyecare. My father also Roger Harty a Publican by trade in who’s pub the Rose of Tralee was founded left me with one strong piece of business advice and it was as follows – ‘Count the barrels in front of your own door and don’t be looking at the barrels up the street’ – In other words - ‘Mind your own business’ We have been doing that to the best our ability serving our customers with the latest in Eyecare products and advice. In fact the catchphrase motto of the business now is – “For your Eye care We Care”

It really is all about Care.

The Growth of the Team In 1986 the business started with just Roger himself and now after 35 years the business has grown 6 employees all working together to help our clients with the best service and advise possible. Roger remembers his very first customers very fondly – they were Dan and Maureen Henry who ran a small shop across the road from Roger (in Boherbee) where he used to frequent or sweets regularly as a child. It is that sort of care and connection with our customers which is the hallmark of our business.

Alan Conway, Ro ger Harty, Mary Ciepierski , Niall Hobbert.

Latest in advanced Optical Technologies Yes we keep an eye to the past but we are very much aware here that the world is changing very rapidly. All this new technology is putting huge demands on people’s eyesight especially the advent of computers. Everything now is a computer – our tv’s, phones, laptops, ipads, cars, and even things like microwaves and washing machines are using computer screens. The Blue light / white light emitting from these screens along with the intense focus required are driving people’s eyesight to the limit causing all sorts of visual stresses. Here at Roger Harty Opticians we are ready and waiting to provide the answer. Each eye test is given Quality time ---- 45 minutes to be exact, using the latest in advance and exclusive technologies to Roger Harty Opticians such as an OCT which examines the health of the Retina and also a Macular Pigment eye (MP Eye) assessment. This is absolute latest in Eye Care technology and we are to the fore in this as we are the only opticians in Munster with such advanced testing equipment. These are used in the assessments of athletes like with our 3 year partnership with Kerry GAA. We are the first and only in the country to develop such a partnership where we are proud to term the “Official Optical Performance Partners” to the Kerry GAA 26

Celebrating 35 Years in Business Kerry’s 1st Fully Inclusive Children’s sight testing Clinic Testing of children’s eyes was a big part of our practice in years gone by. But since The advent of home-learning has put huge demand on the eyesight of teachers, children, and their parents. We identified a gap in the market to develop a deliver a child friendly environment so kids can have a positive stressless experience when they visit for their sight test. Our Fully Inclusive Children’s Sight Testing Clinics were launched and are a huge success. To see a child’s face light up when they get the help they need to see better is priceless, and is very special for us to be a part of that experience. On Saturdays once a month we run a special clinic for children only, to assess all their visual demands – very often we provide them with Crizal Prevencia lenses to protect them from the onset of blue light even if there is no requirement for prescriptive eyesight lenses. Booking is essential for our children’s sight testing clinics.

Unrivalled mobile eye examinations on site

We have also invested in recent times in equipment to make us more mobile so we are readily available to go ‘On Site’ and bringing the latest eye testing technology with us. It is this attention to detail here that is our trademark as we know here that -------- ‘It’s all about our customers “. Just as recent as last week we were on site of a nursing home providing compassionate, professional eye examinations to all the residents.

We acknowledge that all companies now work on screens, and need their staff to be healthy. Eye health plays a key role, and through our 35 years’ experience and ambitious team, we will be developing the growth of this section of our business, in conjunction with all business leaders around Kerry. Contact us if you would like us to visit your business / company to provide professional eye examinations. The demand on people’s eyes is only going to increase in the future so therefore there is going to be more and more demand for high quality eye-care.

A Visit to the Optician

I always thought the process of getting glasses was quiet simple, you began to have difficulties with vision, you had an eye test, you got glasses that was it…but at Roger Harty Optician they go the extra mile to ensure that there is nothing left the chance, with state of the art machines you know you are in safe hands. My appointment is at 9:15 on arrival I Rang the Bell a couple of seconds later a member of staff opened the door and greeted me saying good morning hope you're well, may I take your temperature as it's part of the new covid regulations. I had no problem with this as it made me feel assured that the highest professional standard is maintained here. The staff member then showed me to the waiting area where I was told to relax for a couple of minutes and we will be back to start the eye examination, I was asked for my existing glasses to be assessed. I felt very relaxed in the waiting room where the serenity of the water feature helped me relax and get more comfortable, a couple of minutes later the same member of staff came to the waiting room and asked me to join them at the 1st part of the eye examination the “auto refactor” this was was non intrusive examination. Once finished I was then shown to the opticians room where I met the optician, Roger showed me into his room and asked me to take a seat where he explained to me what examinations he is about to do for me. The first examination that Roger did was called the OCT again another non invasive examination and as Roger explained this examination was to see what was going on at the back of my eyes, again here I felt more assured that my health & wellbeing and my needs are to the fore in this optician's Once the OCT was finished all of 5 minutes the optician asked me to take a seat for the Refraction eye examination, again another non intrusive examination. Here I was asked to read a number of lines of letters to enable the optician identify if there was any vision issues regarding longside short sight as these examinations were proceeding the conversation was very relaxed and all about me. asking me do I have any issues with my eyes. I was in the examination room for over 30 minutes which didn't feel like it and I felt that the optician had my best interests at heart due to the conversation and questions previously had. I felt the options presented to me by the optician we're the best options tailored to me.

There was a selection of frames at different price ranges and there was a selection of lenses at different price ranges at no point did I feel I was being taken advantage of or that, I was never just a number for a quick sale, my needs and requirements were always to the forefront. I would highly recommend a visit to Roger Harty opticians where Roger and the team will ensure your eyes get the care and attention they need.

What can an OCT scan detect? With an OCT, doctors are able to see a cross section or 3D image of the retina and detect the early onset of a variety of eye conditions and eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy (the top three diseases known to cause blindness). Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a commonly performed diagnostic test designed to assist your doctor in identifying retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy (diabetic eye disease). 28

4 steps to choosing your Christmas Party location!

With December providing some of the biggest dates in the social calendar, the Christmas parties are no exception. For management, booking the location and style of party can be quite a daunting task. As the saying goes ‘You can’t suit everyone all of the time’ but with careful well thought out planning you can avoid some of the biggest headaches.

1

. Staff Size; Whether you are a small local business or a factory with a couple of hundred on the payroll, knowing your numbers and identifying which locations can cater for your given size is the first step. For smaller numbers I would recommend a restaurant such as Sforno in Tralee. The ambience is relaxed but intimate, allowing conversation to flow easily amongst all seated at the table. With a stunning menu on offer there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

2

. Budget; recognising your budget early on is vital. Being careful to not over committing your business expense account will allow you to relax and enjoy it yourself! From treating your staff to an elegant fine dining experience at Croi to casual drinks afterwards down town, knowing your financial limits is a must. Don’t be afraid to reach out to businesses and work together with their event manager to create a tailor made Christmas party too? O’ Sheas Bar and Restaurant in Banna is a newly refurbished and designed facility. With plenty of space, a stunning location they can offer a bespoke experience for your party.

3

. Booking Early; booking as early in the year as possible is vitally important as some of the more popular places tend to book up quite fast. Some hotels will host themed nights where they can cater to a couple of hundred, providing live music as a much needed bonus. These types of Christmas parties tend to be very popular and book out super quick so early booking is essential to avoiding disappointment

4

. Location; This is probably the most important part of the planning. Is there much point booking a night in a hotel so far away that your staff cannot afford a taxi home and are faced with the option of an expensive hotel room or miss out altogether? Taking O’ Donnells in Mounthawk for example. Situated on the outskirts of Tralee it is in a prime location. Big enough to cater to large numbers with ample parking and close proximity to the town centre makes it a perfect choice to suit all

Following these 4 simple steps will ensure your party plans go as smoothly as possible. Be sure to pick up Connect November edition where we will feature Christmas party offers from around the county. 30

Saying I Do again..

Our wedding day is one of the most important days in our lives but for this couple to renew that special day 20 years later was even more wonderful. From The Great British Sewing Bee to James Bond, and everything inbetween… When Jo Arbon and her best friend Clair sat down to watch the UK Great British Sewing Bee, with a bottle or two of wine, I don’t think either of them anticipated it to end in a James Bond themed secret wedding vow renewals combined with 50th birthday celebration! The event was held at Jack’s Coastguard restaurant in Cromane, and was blessed with beautiful weather. The Groom, thought he was simply having lunch at Jack’s with his wife on her birthday, and was completely stunned when he was asked to dress up in full tux and taken to Rossbeigh Beach, where the helicopter showed up in true James Bond style. Sean couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing “I was so excited I tried to act cool and walk towards the chopper, but couldn’t keep it up and started to run towards it” said Sean However, his first words on getting in the chopper were “Am I still getting lunch?”

32

In keeping with his James Bond style he was handed a cocktail on landing by Brian. Nathan Kelly was the Best Man, 008! And both were dressed by Tuxedo in Tralee. The ceremony was conducted by our very own Mags Kissane, Married by Mags, in stunning outdoor setting. And guests were serenaded by Ciaran Wynne, local singer/songwriter. A Secret Facebook Group was used to invite the 50 guests, with a live video stream with over 150 people watching on the day from all over the world. The Bride’s brother, Simon, came over from the UK to give her away, and was fully PCR tested so he could attend. It had been over 2 years since she had seen him last. The Bride was dressed from Cinderella’s Closet in Cork, after doing a whole Say Yes to the Dress day, in secret of course! The something borrowed was a fabulous pair of pearly white Doc Marten wedding boots The cake was made by Orla’s Country Kitchen in Listowel, a beautiful chunky chocolate biscuit cake. The flowers came from Shades of Bloom in Killorglin. And all signs and decorations made by Nina Finn-Kelcy of Izzy & Jules. Local photographer David Rolt kindly offered his services to take these wonderful photos of the day.

Changing Lifestlye

By Cathriona Murphy

Donna Nelan has an MA in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and works for the HSE Drug & Alcohol Services as a specialised Behavioural Therapist for Adolescents as well as running her private practice here in Tralee where she works with adults and teams tailoring behavioural programmes for personal growth. She runs professional workshops on Mindset, goal-setting and selfcare in the workplace. When it comes to diets, lifestyle changes or general wellbeing, we all start out with the best of intentions. We stock the fridge, sign up to the latest gym package on offer and perhaps gaze longingly at new clothes online imagining what it would feel like to wear them. Who can blame us? In a world where society is driven more and more by the materialistic, the image focused and the desire for perfection, it would affect even the most secure amongst us. With TV programmes such as Love Island becoming more prevalent and creating a new genre of culture, it is difficult not to become disheartened when we feel like we don’t fit societal norms. So why is it when we start these “new year new me” plans to we fall at the first hurdle or even a few weeks in? Is it a case of we simply don’t have the will power or does it run deeper? To find out I recently sat with Behavioural Therapist, Donna Nelan. I asked Donna about the idea of will power, is there more to it than that? “Yes if you think of willpower as the lens you view the world through, then most people are using what is causing the problem to try and solve the problem – in my experience most people do not lack the will or desire to achieve their goals. They also have powerful driving forces such as their family, children, careers etc. If will is desire and power is a driving force that propels you forward, then the person does not lack willpower. They are often quite successful in many areas of their lives. The only thing that is missing for them is the understanding of the emotional attachment they have to the behaviour and clear achievable goals to bring about change. As humans we are programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain, we are all designed to attach to what we find pleasurable. 34

For example, sitting watching Love Island and wishing you had ‘that’ body might trigger insecurities which will create an urge to seek comfort and for us that is to fill our belly. So this creates a conflict between my desire for that love island body and my immediate want to feel better and I reach out for a takeaway or another glass of wine. “Of course, coming from a behavioural point of view it comes down to your thoughts and your thought process, in essence what you are telling yourself is what you believe. For example, if when changing a behaviour your underlying belief is ‘this is hard’ ‘I’m missing out or I’m sacrificing a lot’ that mind-set cultivates ‘It’s not fair’ which then manifests a victim mind-set i.e. self-pity. Which leads to the Karpman’s triangle – being in a victim mind-set we have a perceived persecutor (your partner, boss, mother, father etc.), when you feel persecuted you seek to be rescued. Which is where we usually return to predictably rewarding behaviours such as food, alcohol, relationships anything that gives us an immediate reward. We return to the unconscious cycle of being emotionally triggered, felling discomfort which creates an urge to seek relief. In essence our thoughts create our feelings and our feelings direct our actions”. I asked Donna did she feel people should prioritize their mind-set and how it works before entering a lifestyle change? Changing behaviour as an adult is a difficult process without professional guidance. With the right guidance you will learn the underlying attachment to the behaviour. All behaviour is intelligent as it was learned in situations where it was previously successful. However, there is often a mismatch between what was a successful defence mechanism at 14 years old and 34 years old but any behaviour that protected us we will attach to even when it becomes self-defeating. This is why it is important to have support in exploring the underlying attachment to behaviours and belief systems as this is the solutions to understanding how we experience the world and therefore react to it. So yes it is vital that in order to make changes we first must understand our belief systems and how they were formed. When it comes to behaviour therapy I asked Donna is it available to everyone? “Yes when an individual enters therapy the assessment process determines the treatment plan based on the individual’s immediate needs and long-term goals. Behaviour therapy is very much self-directed; I’m teaching the person to become their own therapist! People who are undertaking a behaviour

change will Journal every day using guide sheets and we explore the person’s experience of daily living during the following session. Journaling brings the individual into a state of self-awareness that would previously have been unconscious. When the individual identifies the source of a belief or unhelpful thinking styles it’s often quite easy for them to ‘choose’ to respond to situations rather than reacting to them.

“Firstly I would recommend getting professional support, be it a therapist or support group as you get access to knowledge, experience and accountability.

I also teach them mindfulness skills to improve emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. This empowers them to make considered solution focused decisions.

I would say look at all areas of your life, from family, friends, work, fun, home life, health and wellbeing etc. Score it on a scale from 1-10 and identify areas of unhappiness or where you feel you need improvement. This can help you identify goals needed in each area and create your road map to success. Your goals will be achieved with consistent practice over time. It’s not about achieving 100% all day every day, it’s about making the 1% change every day being realistic and consistent”.

Finally, I asked Donna what tips she would give Connect Kerry readers looking to begin a lifestyle change?

For details on any of the above please contact Donna Nelan on 086 8949025.

Do Lash Extensions damage the natural lash? No. Individual extensions do not damage the natural lash unless incorrect aftercare takes place

The perfect Lashes Vicky O Sullivan of Touched by Tori. Makeup artist and eyelash extension technician. During lockdown I decided to train in eyelash extensions to offer a treatment which coincides with make up. I trained with MS Diva Lash Academy in Cork. Eyelash extension appointments can be made through Touched by Tori Facebook and Instagram page. We are located at Hairworks Hair and Beauty Salon. Eyelash Extensions lengthen, thicken and enhance natural eyelashes. They are either single or fanned strands of synthetic fibres that come in different lengths, thicknesses and curl. Eyelash Extensions can give you an enhanced natural look known as the ‘classic’, or something more noticeable like the ‘volume’, ‘dramatic’ or ‘glamorous’ sets. This treatment is a semi-permanent method, within the lifespan of a natural lash, to keep the lashes looking full, regular 3-weekly refills are required.

36

Is the application painful? Eyelash extension treatments are not at all painful; in fact it is considered one of the most relaxing beauty treatments available today. Why do you have to have maintenance? As your natural lashes are in a continuous cycle of growth, the extensions will fall out when the natural lash is at the end of its cycle. Refills every 3 weeks will allow your eyelash extensions to last and look fabulous forever. Classic lashing is a technique in which a single extension is applied to one isolated natural lash. Classic lashes are perfect for adding length and “some” fullness to your natural lash line. Classic lashes will give the appearance of wearing mascara. Hybrid Lashes are a 70-30 mixture of both Classic Lashes and Volume Lashes. Styling Hybrid gives you the best of both worlds. Hybrid lashes offer a variety of texture and more volume but without the sometimes unnatural look of volume lashes Russian Mega Volume Lashes are as glam and dense as it gets. THE ADVANTAGES OF weight training or strength training. As a personal trainer working with clients of all ages over the past few years , - most want the same results - to lose weight and "tone up". Simply put, this means simultaneously dropping body fat whilst increasing lean muscle mass, and the most efficient and proven way to do this - is strength training (combined with adequate nutrition). Thankfully, more and more women no longer fear that weights will make them big and bulky. (that's too many cupcakes) if anything, it is exactly what most need to do for how they want to look and to slow down the results of aging. The added bonus is that as well as fat loss and toning - strength training has a wealth of other health and wellness benefits HERE ARE JUST A FEW: Improve Heart Health Strength training results in stronger muscles - this includes the heart, lungs and diaphragm. All good. Bone health Strength training increases bone density i.e. results in stronger bones. Weak bones are more likely to fracture or break than healthy bones, Women are four times more like to develop osteoporosis - strength training is proven to slow down or prevent osteoporosis. Improved Sporting Performance Strength training can benefit your performance across an array of different sporting activities. Whether your sport requires the ability to run faster, jump higher, tackle harder or go longer, your performance will be significantly inhibited without incorporation resistance training into your training regime. Regardless of the sport, effective strength and conditioning programs are now paramount to athletic performance globally. Injury Prevention Weight training can help to prevent injuries by strengthen the stabilizing muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons and ultimately improving joint stability, resulting in a reduced risk of falls and injuries both during exercise and daily activities. Similar to bone health the more muscles mass you have as you get older , the better chance you have of preventing sarcopenia (natual muscle loss due to ageing) Increased Metabolism Not only does strength training effectively burn body fat during

38

training but your metabolism remains elevated for several hours afterwards meaning that your body will continue to burn fat long after you stop exercising. An increase in lean muscle mass results in a higher metabolism and a higher metabolism means more calories burnt throughout the day. Mental health Lightning weights has been shown to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms, boost self 0esteem, reduce stress and improve overall image Young Irish people have some of the highest levels of depression in Europe. Women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and women also tend to be less self-confident and negatively evaluate their physique far more frequently than me. With such worrying statistics on female mental health, recent research has focused on exploring weight training as a preventative treatment. Lifting weights has been shown to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms, boost self-esteem, reduce stress and improve overall body image. Ask the Pharmacist In the latest edition of the Pulitzer Prize winning Ask The Pharmacist feature, Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy’s Pat and Maria discuss all things relating to the digestive system. “More and more, we are seeing people come into the pharmacy asking for advice on issues relating to the digestive system. Constipation, diarrhoea and acid reflux are on the rise. Sometimes there is an explanation for this or an underlying cause and sometimes it is just a temporary problem that can be resolved quickly. Some people are reluctant to discuss these issues but we deal with them everyday so there is no need to be embarrassed. We will discuss these issues in a little more detail below and hope this article will provide some good support. Constipation is quite often a subjective issue, defined by the passage of hard stools less frequently than the norm. It can cause great distress in severe cases and chronic cases should always be investigated. Sometimes simple dietary changes can remedy the condition-increasing your fibre intake through fresh food and vegetables and drinking more water may be all that is needed. However for some people this may not be feasible or enough and happily there are a range of products available to help get things moving along. These include: Senokot – comes in tablet or liquid form and works by causing irritation in the lining of the gut. Take at night and generally in the morning you will be good to go. Dulcolax- available in tablet and suppository form, also a stimulant laxative like Senokot and also quick acting but may cause some irritation and cramping. Lactulose- a syrup that works by drawing water into the colon, resulting in softer stools that are easier to pass. This is particularly suitable for children as the taste is not too strong. Fybogel – a sachet that you dissolve in water and drink to increase the bulk in your colon. There are many other products available to treat this condition and sometimes a certain one will not be appropriate so remember to always ask your pharmacy team for advice. Chronic constipation can sometimes result in haemorrhoids, caused as a result of straining on the toilet seat. There are suppositories, wipes and creams available to help with this and these often are enough to help deal with the discomfort of this annoying issue. Diarrhoea is characterised by the passage of loose watery stools at frequent intervals. Best case scenario it is a nuisance but in severe cases it can cause life threatening electrolyte disturbances that require urgent medical attention. This is particularly true for young children and the elderly. It is sometimes a protective mechanism-you may have ingested some dodgy food and your body is trying to expel the toxins. In this case it is best to let it run its course, and increase your fluid intake to prevent dehydration. In other cases, it may be serving no useful function. Available products on the market include:

Imodium- contains a drug called loperamide which slows transit through the bowel. Suitable for age 12 and up, as Julie Andrews herself would sing, these are a few of her favourite drugs. Works a treat. Dioralyte-electrolyte sachets that replenish salts that are lost from the body in diarrhoea, thus preventing dehydration. Available in blackcurrant, citrus and natural flavour, these are something that everyone should have at home in the medicine cabinet. Some people also use these to limit the painful after affects of a night out on the town but here in Mounthawk Pharmacy we would not know anything about that. These will usually be sufficient to ward off dehydration but if you find yourself or your child feeling lethargic or becoming listless do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Reflux is an uncomfortable condition in which the stomach contents come back up the esophagus and cause damage and irritation to its lining. Certain foodstuffs can exacerbate the condition-processed foods and alcohol for example so sometimes making dietary adjustments can eliminate the need for medication. If lifestyle changes fail, the following can help: Nexium, Losec, Pantup- work by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Available in once a day tablet form these are highly effective and work quickly to limit the distress this condition can cause. Whilst highly effective, some people cannot use these tablets-ask your pharmacy team for more advice. Gaviscon- available in tablet or liquid form, this works by forming a raft on top of the stomach contents, pregnant women find this a lifesaver in particular. Also available are Acidex, Rennies and Maalox and these work in a similar fashion. One last thing we would like to recommend are Probiotics. These are supplements that contain billions of cultures of beneficial bacteria. So many people find these to be effective if you suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and particularly good brands include Aflorex, Udo’s Choice and Biokult. Here in Mounthawk Pharmacy, we stock a huge range of probiotics to suit every budget and we highly recommend that you give them a try. We hope that you found this article informative and look forward to answering any questions you may have. Pop into store to browse the range-we will be delighted to help you”

Phoenix Women's Pearly Whites Centre by Dr Marcas Mac Domhnaill

The PHOENIX WOMEN’S CENTRE is all about supporting women in any way that we can. No matter what difficulty a woman may encounter, we are here to help on our support line, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10.00a.m. to 2.00p.m.

The Phoenix Women’s Centre relies on grants, donations, fundraising, proceeds from events organised for women and profits from the sale of goods at a monthly car boot sale in Tralee.

The Phoenix Women’s Centre has no direct financial support from Government funds. There are no salaried employees – everyone involved is providing a service as a volunteer. The monthly car boot sale in Tralee involves a very early morning start at about 6.00a.m. for our dedicated volunteers. They gather all the donated items and pack them into their respective cars and head to the site in Tralee where the sale takes place. Then they unpack and display the items and get ready to meet the public.

Every autumn the dental sector wish to promote mouth cancer awareness. We advise everyone to examine their mouths once a month for any changes. Mouth, head and neck cancer can present in a number of ways and can mimic some common complaints.

Symptoms of mouth, head and neck cancer include: A sore or ulcer in your mouth that does not heal, white or red patches inside the mouth, a lump in the mouth or neck, thickening or hardening of the cheek or tongue, difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the tongue, numbness of the tongue or face, a persistent sore throat and hoarseness, persistent nosebleeds and a stuffy nose and unexplained loose teeth.

Smoking will also increase the risk of developing cancer of the mouth, tonsil, throat, larynx or lung.

The Car Boot Sale is located at the Kingdom Mart, Tralee on Sundays from 9am-2pm. People have to date, been exceptionally generous and helpful. Without the proceeds from this sale and other charitable donations and funds, the Phoenix Women’s Centre could not survive.

If you chew tobacco you will have a higher risk of developing cancer. Risk increases as you get older and it is more common in men.

Our service to women in Kerry is needed and highly valued by those women who have come through our doors or contacted us by phone or email.

Drinking spirits also increases the risk and the risk is even higher when you drink and smoke together. The human papilloma virus (HPV) can also increase the risk of mouth cancers.

If you have any bric a brac, good clothes, accessories, costume jewellery, crockery, toys, books, records, very small items of furniture, pictures, mirrors etc., please consider donating them to us.

You can reduce the risk of mouth cancer by stopping smoking, watching how much alcohol you drink, protecting your skin in the sunshine and checking your mouth regularly for any changes. Your dentist will always check for mouth cancer at your regular dental check-ups.

You can also support us by coming along to our stall at the car boot sale.

Music in the Kingdom Tralee Music Revival - Supporting Local Talent By Lisa Curran As lockdown eased and the streets began to fill with people again we all needed a lift and we certainly got it with the re:vival festival in Pearse Park. I got to speak to David Scott from Tralee Chamber alliance about how it all came together and what to expect in the future. David, an absolute pleasure to speak to you about the recent success of Tralee music revival. You too, Lisa, and thank you for the opportunity. How did the idea come about and what was the initial goal of this fantastic festival? We applied for the Live Performance Support Scheme based on a framework we had applied in the past with the Food Festival, Christmas in Tralee, the Purple Flag initiative, and the Street Performers of Tralee(SPOT) platform. Our goal was simple – to get local musicians back doing what they do best, performing live in front of a live engaging audience, A Re:Vival of our local music scene. How did ye pick between all the amazing acts in the town? We have an abundance of acts from the fresh to the more advance so, in my opinion, ye made great choices Thanks Lisa, appreciate that, and it was no easy feat due to the range of fantastic local talent here in Tralee. We engaged with Ross Brassil, a well-known local musician who handled the introductions with the bands. He was a great help and that got the ball rolling in terms of the bigger Re:Gig performances. With Orchestral Art in the Park we approached some local string musicians who could provide a classical yet fresh musical element to our already established Art in the Park event. We thought it was a perfect fit. Finally with the ongoing Street Busking Performances, we are spreading the word through the SPOT network and thankfully the talent and demand is there in abundance. We received a load of positive feedback from the musicians that made us realise just how much they missed performing during the pandemic. As we know the live music industry is not just the band, it’s the teams behind them too from setting up venues, sound and lighting, security and food vendors for those treats you need so it’s been a huge boost to so many! Who did ye have involved providing these aspects? We looked at several locations to host the Re:Gig element of the

Re:Vival, from the Square to a mobile stage traveling at different locations around town but none of which suited especially with Covid restrictions. After much consideration we went for Pearse Park and engaged with the very successful Park Festival which was on the week previous. After some rescheduling of dates, deadlines, and bookings we were able to include the three-night live music revival into the Park Festival programme including all that came with it, primarily a venue, stage, sound/lighting and the fine expertise of Shannon StarEntertainment and their committed team, which I would like to say were all a pleasure to work with. What’s in the pipeline for the future? I adored being involved with the food fest and busking competitions a few years ago, is this to be the event to get involved in for musicians in the future in Tralee? Will it grow to more? In terms of live music performances we will continue with the SPOT platform and hope to engage with further musicians on this to further add life and vibrancy to the streets of Tralee. For other large events like the Food fest and busking competitions through the Purple Flag initiative live music will forever be an essential element to these events and if the support is there we will grow. If there is one major takeaway from the Tralee Music Revival is the huge potential events like it have and the support from the local community was there in spades. I know there were discussions a while back to have a permanent outdoor music venue in Tralee, is that still and open conversation? It would be a fantastic amenity. Tralee has so many music groups and organisations that may not necessarily be able to afford or fill large venues. It’s a conversation that needs to be had and due to the pandemic may have slipped to the wayside but now more than ever we need to be looking at these options to further support our local musicians and performers. I’d love to see a portion of the square covered for all weather performances, events andlive music gigs, time will tell. Thank you so much again David and Tralee Chamber Alliance again for being so supportive of the music industry in Tralee. You’re very welcome Lisa, and if anyone wants to get in touch with me on gigs, busking in town or a platform in which they want to use to reach a greater audience they can email David@ tralee.ie
