SINEAD KISSANE TV3's Queen of Sport By Marisa Reidy SHE has become a hugely familiar face on our television screens as one of TV3’s top sports reporters, but Ardfert’s Sinead Kissane admits that while growing up in Kerry, she never, ever imagined a career in front of the TV cameras. While sport was always an avenue she wanted to pursue as a career in some shape or form, she says she was leaning more towards sports psychology than sports journalism while contemplating her future as a student at Presentation Secondary School in Tralee. Now front and centre of TV3’s sports reporting team, Sinead says it’s a career she loves and one that has offered her some amazing opportunities to meet some wonderful sporting icons. “It’s funny because I never really wanted or planned to do TV, ever. Journalism I thought about alright - my uncle was a writer for the Irish Times - but I had a number of options, including sports psychology,” Sinead told Connect. “After school, I studied Arts in UCD and afterwards went on to do a Masters in Journalism which I finished in September 1999. It was only through that DCU course that I ever thought about TV. It was part of the course and I really liked it. I liked the immediacy of it.” Sinead explained that a twomonth work placement at TV when she was 21 cemented her desire to work in TV, but said she knew from the getgo that news reporting was not the route she wanted to take. A love of sport was enshrined in her from her childhood days in Ardfert and that was, without doubt, the route she wanted her career to take. “We were literally into every sport growing up,” Sinead said with fondness. “My dad (David) was involved in setting up St Brendan’s Athletics Club in Ardfert and my mom (Mary) was on the committee, so we took part in athletics at 4 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

the Community Games for years. I also played camogie and soccer - nearly everything really. It was just something I loved and that stayed with me as I got older, I guess” Sinead said that her initial placement at TV3 in 2000 certainly helped ‘get her foot in the door’, but admitted that she had a tough five years between that and being offered a full time job with the station in 2005. Like all freelance journalists, Sinead plied her trade for a number of news and sports media outlets, which was extremely tough and made her question herself more than once. “Being a freelance journalist really tests you because there is no security. You start asking yourself if this is really what you want to do. As confident as I was about the career I wanted,it was very tough.”

day and age, I wouldn’t expect to come across anything like that, thankfully.” Saying that, however, a demanding job as sports reporter for a national news outlet does of course come with its own pressures. “Some people say it’s a great job, which is can be of course, but it also comes with its own responsibilities,” Sinead explained. “Firstly you have to find the right balance between loving sport and being a journalist - and making sure that those values are most important, rather than being a fan. There are times too, however, when you simply can’t help getting caught up in the emotion of the big sporting occasions, and you have to make allowances for that", she says. “One of my favourite sporting highlights was when Munster won the Heineken Cup in the Millennium Stadium in 2006. I was getting ready to run out on the pitch and do a live broadcast and there were tears running down my face. Sometimes it’s hard to be impartial, but I just had to grab a hold of myself and do it.” Live TV in general comes with its own challenges, Sinead explained, so you just have to make sure you are prepared because anything can happen.

Before joining TV3 on a full time basis, Sinead worked for a year with Newstalk when it was a Dublin station – a job she says was invaluable to helping her decide her career path. “While I was there I got a great idea of what sports journalism really was and the standards that were required,” she said. “They set the standard as far as I was concerned and it was an amazing experience.” Now a full time sports reporter with TV3, Sinead says she is loving work and despite being in what is undoubtedly a male-dominated environment, she has never been made to feel any different to her male counterparts. “Ah maybe 10 years ago you might have gotten the odd comment, but I can safely say I have never found it to be an issue,” Sinead said. “And to be honest, in this

Asked if she still gets nervous before a live broadcast, Sinead says there would be something wrong if she didn’t. “I get worried if I’m not nervous,” she said. “You have to have a bit of an edge left and always know you might make a mistake.” Anyone who knows Sinead also knows that she never shies away from asking the tough questions either, no matter who is at the receiving end of them. Famously asking former Ireland head coach Eddie O’Sullivan if he would be considering his position after a disastrous 2007 Rugby World Cup, Sinead found herself with some more tough questions to ask just two weeks ago. This time she was questioning Munster stars Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray about their support of convicted drugs cheat – and new teammate - Gerbrandt Grobler.

“In situations like that I always hope that those you’re questioning know that I am being fair on them and everybody concerned,” Sinead explained, “On the Grobler issue, first of all those two players should probably have never been put in that position [by Munster] but I had a job to do and had to ask them the question. It’s as uncomfortable for me as it is for them but, as I say, there are no hidden agendas. Once we all know that what’s being asked is fair then I think they generally understand. They know I am just doing my job and they can’t take that personally.” With the Six Nations just about to kick off, Sinead says she is prepared for a fullon work schedule, following Ireland’s exploits as they bid to win another title. And her predictions? “I really think Ireland have a great chance [of winning the tournament] this year. People talk about the challenges of playing England and France away, but Joe Schmidt has done it before and I think the team needs to validate themselves with a title, so they will be gung-ho for a win.” When asked how she likes to spend her down time when she eventually gets some time away from the TV cameras, Sinead laughs and says even her time off revolves around sport. “It’s funny because my downtime is really my uptime too and sometimes I find it hard to differentiate because it almost always revolves around sport,” she said. “I love nothing more than going to a Kerry football match with my parents, whether it’s at home or in Croke Park. Sport is my downtime, I just wish I could get home to Kerry more than I do. There is nothing like getting home really.”

More Energy ~ Less Fatigue Remarkably about 1 in 4 people report that fatigue is a significant problem, but just because it is so common this does not mean that you need to accept it. Fatigue can affect both your mind and body with symptoms including muscle fatigue, lack of motivation, low mood, brain fog, aches and pains and headaches. This often leads people to turn to unhealthy food, stimulants or alcohol to cope. WHAT’S THE ISSUE? There may be many reasons why you are constantly tired. These include poor sleep, lack of exercise, excess weight, unhealthy eating, and chronic stress. In your body, poor cellular energy production may be an important part of t he picture. It is important to seek your GP’s advice if you are concerned about your symptoms. Dietary and lifestyle changes can make a big difference to your energy levels, a good balanced diet is essential and a number of nutritional supplements can help support you on your journey back to abundant energy. Research has shown that when your cells are low on energy and you feel run down, taking nutrients such as MAGNESIUM or DR WOLZ once or twice a day may help restore cellular energy production and improve your energy levels. They may also improve your sleep patterns, mood, mental clarity and energy while reducing muscle pain and overall wellbeing. CO-ENZYME Q10 has gained much popularity as a dietary supplement for fatigue. It is safe, natural and certainly worth trying, especially if you have severe fatigue. Despite the common belief that “most people can get all the vitamins and minerals they need by eating a balanced, varied diet”, the reality is that suboptimal intakes of vitamins and minerals are very common, even in people who eat well. While healthy eating is of course very important, optimizing your nutritional intake with a good quality VITAMIN B

COMPLEX or daily MULTIVITAMIN AND MINERAL formula has been shown to improve your health and well-being. B –VITAMINS in particular can help with mood and energy because they are Try not to consume vital for energy production in your caffeine at meal times body and are important for your as it can inhibit the brain.

absorption of essential minerals including Iron, which are necessary for energy levels.

I mentioned DR WOLZ product earlier in the article, this is an award winning German nutritional health supplement, with years of clinical proven success, it is a very effective supplement to help fight viral and bacterial infections, may help with chronic fatigue, anyone experiencing “burn out” and helps to strengthen your overall immune system. It contains everything the body needs and works at a cellular level enabling vital nutrients to be absorbed directly into your cells. LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR ENERGY AND VITALITY: 1. Rest and Restore – Many people have jet lag every day, not because they got off a plane, but because they’re not getting enough sleep. Most people need 7 to 8 hours per night. You can improve your sleep pattern by setting and sticking to a regular bed time. Making time to chill out and relax and hour or two before bed. Completely black out your room, and remove electronic devices to enjoy a longer slumber. 2. Detox from Sugar – Contrary to what we hear, sugar does not give you energy, it robs you of it. It’s not just sweets; added sugars are everywhere, so keep your diet as natural as possible. 3. Regular Physical Exercise – Jump off the sofa and put on your walking shoes. Aim for at least a 30 minute brisk walk most days Until Next Time, Stay Healthy

DR AILIS’ TOP 10 WEIGHT LOSS TIPS 1) GET YOUR GOALS ON - If you want to lose weight you have to set a clear goal around it; i.e. I want to lose X pounds by X date. You want make sure this goal is realistic too – 1-2 pounds a week is a safe weight loss goal, but this depends on your starting point and your dedication to taking action! 2) MAKE A PLAN - Once you know what you want to achieve you need to start taking action. If you have a programme you know works for you, that’s great. If not, you might need to look around and see what one fits your needs or consider a personal trainer / health coach to set a programme for you. 3) TAKE ACTION! - This is an obvious step but one that people often forget after a week or two! The changes that you make are the ones that will bring the results, so you need to stick with it. The changes become easier after a few weeks as they start to become habits and so you are not as reliant on willpower to do them! 4) MOVE - Make sure you include some strength training in your workouts – ideally at least twice a week. Strength training will help you build muscle, which will in turn increase your metabolism and so burn more calories even while at rest. 5) UP YOUR VEGGIES - A strong plant based diet works great not only for improving your overall health but also for weight loss. A review of 15 studies found that just by switching to a plant-based diet, participants lost just over 10 pounds in a month. Another study by the Obesity Society found that participants consuming vegan and vegetarian diets lost an average or 8.2 to 9.9 pounds over 8 weeks just by eating a plant based diet and not restricting calories. 6) DRINK UP - Water is vital for so many chemical reactions in our body, including digestion and metabolism. Aim for eight glasses of water a day – herbal teas will count toward this. Starting your day with a glass of lemon water (half a lemon squeezed into a glass of warm water) will help to boost your immune system, detox and refresh your system. It also gives you a feeling of fullness so will help with your weight loss efforts. 7) GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP - We need 7-9 hours of sleep a night and if we get less than this it will not only affect our mood, it can actually hinder our weight loss. One study has even shown that people who only get two thirds of their regular amount of sleep eat an average of 549 calories the following day! What happens when we don’t get enough sleep is that our hormones are out of whack. The levels of ghrelin increase which makes us hungry and the levels of leptin decrease which leaves us feeling unsatisfied even after we eat. 8) THINK THIN - Having the right mindset is probably one of the most important things you can do when trying to lose weight – you really have to stay focused on the image of your final goal. Think to yourself: I am a slim person in a body that is too big for me! You really have to believe that you can and will do this. 9) GET SUPPORT - It is really important to make sure that you have the support of those around you. The support can take a variety of forms; from someone doing the dishes so you can go for a walk after dinner, to a friend who will join you for a run, to someone you can call for motivation when you have a challenging day. 10) BE MINDFUL - Mindfulness plays a big role in weight loss – whether it be mindful eating or being mindful of your inner 10 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

chatter. We often open a bag of crisps and before we know it we are looking into an empty bag and didn’t even realize we ate it all! Mindfulness is the complete opposite, it is enjoying and savouring every bite we eat. When we do this we are much more aware of what and how much we are eating. Try out a few of these tips this week and let me know how you get on! If you would like to be supported in your weight loss efforts and be looking and feeling great by Easter and beyond, you can contact Dr. Ailis Brosnan on 085 7725133 or email ailis@YourHealthyLivingCoach.com -------------------------------------------------

Boosting your Child's Immune System

Colds and flus are everywhere but when your child is sick it can be worrying we asked Eileen Lane – Nutrition Advisor for some advice Runny noses, sneezing, coughs, bugs…chances are your child has suffered from some or all of these symptoms these past few weeks. Winter months are particularly difficult to shake off colds and bugs. The festive season is no friend of the immune system as chances are your house was full of sugary treats and unprocessed food items – which are all part and parcel of the celebrations. However sugar can take a considerable toll on immunity and come the New Year children are plagued with all sorts of bugs, especially on their return to school when germs spread at an alarming rate. So now that Spring has finally arrived (thankfully!) it is now time to boost your child’s immune system and restore their energy for a good healthy year ahead! The following are my top tips on how best to nurture you child’s immunity: Nutrition: Good food is the best medicine. Food is your fuel so ensure that what your child eats is nourishing. Fresh fruit and vegetables are nature’s antibiotics. Try to incorporate some at every meal. If you have a fussy eater, include these foods through smoothies and soups. Bone broth is an excellent immune booster. Use it as a base for soups or for the more adventurous child give it to them as a healthy snack. Organic bone broth can be bought in some Health Shops or better again you can make your own. Good fats are also essential to a healthy immune system. Try to include some oily fish in your child’s diet 2-3 times per week. One of the most important things to remember is to keep your child’s diet as unprocessed as possible (in other words try to steer clear of foods that come in packets with a string of ingredients; some of which can be even difficult to pronounce, let alone digest!. Whole, fresh foods are far more beneficial to health. A Healthy Gut: A healthy immune system depends on a healthy gut with good bacteria. Sugar and processed foods can promote bad bacteria leading to coughs, cold and bugs. To restore the gut to health consult your local Health Shop or Pharmacy about a Probiotic supplement suitable for your child. Sleep: Good restful sleep is vital for your child’s growth and immune system. A child requires in excess of 9 hours of continuous sleep each night. Be mindful of sleep hygiene for your child – for example having no screen time 2 hours before bed, ensuring the bedroom is at a comfortable temperature, avoiding caffeine (which is also in fizzy drinks) in the afternoon. Fresh Air: Getting out and about for a little exercise each day will boost your child’s immunity and will help them to sleep better also. Wrap them up warm and encourage daily activity.

Willpower If like many people you started out the year with New Year’s resolutions, you will have come up against the notion of willpower. Willpower is the force of a person’s will used to accomplish or tolerate something that they are not naturally inclined to do or tolerate. For instance, we may use willpower to stick to a diet, to go to the gym everyday, to give up cigarettes or alcohol. The key of it is, though, that it’s a fight against yourself. You are trying to make yourself do something that goes against your inclinations or desires, for a specific purpose or reason. At its heart is the idea of delayed gratification: you put off the immediate gratification of a cigarette for the long term goal of better health. You postpone the immediate gratification of a cream cake for the more distant satisfaction of reaching a target of fitness. The fight then is between your rational, adult self that says “If I exert self-control now, it will be better for me later” and your emotional, childish self that says “But I want it now!”. The big question is “who will win?”. Many of us will already have lost, having gone back to regular dips into the chocolate store and the extra half-hour in bed instead of healthy exercise. We all know people who dramatically give up cigarettes forever, and half an hour later run out and buy a full packet to smoke. The trick is not to make it such a big fight. Try making smaller decisions to begin with. Save a smaller amount of money from your salary instead of trying to cut out shopping altogether. Walk for 10 minutes a day instead of an hour. Go to the gym once a week instead of every day. These small steps can become the basis for a habit that can be built upon, and you can rely less on willpower. After all, we only have so much of it, and it can run out very quickly.

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a wonderful, peaceful holiday season. This month’s issue is all about Health, Wellbeing & Weddings so with that in mind here are my musings on the word – ‘perspective’! I love the New Year, a time to let go of the old and welcome in the new, a time for planning too (maybe even your Big Day)! Findings from a 2016 DoneDeal poll show that I am not alone with this view; as about 52% of Irish people make New Year’s resolutions. Over 75% surveyed planned on taking up a fitness activity. We are all gung ho and then……24% of us give up after 2-3 months & just 8% keep these for a year. Interestingly, the Business Insider website claims that 80% of people will have abandoned their resolutions by the middle of February. We could look at this negatively and think ah well, doomed to fail OR we could accept that failure is a part of life, an opportunity to keep perspective and learn from the experience to move forward. I prefer to choose the latter! 1. Add supports around your goal & enjoy the Rewards - We are more likely to achieve our goals when we have supports in place around them to help us stay on track. For example, if your goal is to run 10km or perhaps to be less stressed in 2018; then consider what else can help you achieve this (e.g.) attending a regular yoga class to learn breathing techniques and stretches to avoid injury or aches and pains or eating right to fuel your body. In addition, researchers have found that the enjoyment factor is the key in terms of sticking to resolutions. In other words, if we get immediate rewards from our new habits we are more likely to stick to them. So tracking your progress regularly is a real motivator. 2. Check your perspective & practise gratitude - According to author Seppo Iso-Ahola the problem lies with the internal battle between what you want to do and what you should do. If you can stop yourself overthinking how awful it will be to have a salad for dinner or to leave the sofa & fire on a winters evening to come to yoga class, you will have a better chance of going through with it – so it’s all about perspective! To help me with this I do a daily gratitude exercise. I focus on 1 thing I am grateful for each day before I fall asleep (you can do it any time of the day though!). It’s always a small or daily thing that might otherwise go unnoticed like “I am grateful that my body is healthy so that I can practise & teach yoga” or “I am grateful to have a warm bed to sleep in tonight in a place I feel safe”. 3. Avoid the word “should” - It’s a destructive word! To me it’s associated with guilt & shame, we use it to beat ourselves up and bully ourselves into things (eg) I should have gone to the gym / I shouldn’t have eaten chocolate. There is no should, there only is! So what you missed a gym session? Quit beating yourself up, keep it in perspective - it was once, and you have a new day tomorrow to begin again. Should implies obligation and that feels like a heavy, loaded responsibility that I won’t enjoy! Reframe how you speak to yourself internally – instead of “I messed up my new diet plan, I’m hopeless”. We wouldn’t speak like that to a loved one, so why do we speak so harshly to ourselves? Instead stop yourself and ask: What went well today? What can I do more of to help me succeed?” Then look at what didn’t support your goal and ask yourself: “What can I learn from that and use tomorrow so that my goal will be even more successful?” 4. Live a mindful life - Many of us live life on autopilot. Rushing from home, to work, to meetings, to pick up kids etc. etc. Have you ever found yourself at your destination with no memory of the journey there? Or been eating your dinner and you look down and that last potato is already gone, and you didn’t even realise you’d eaten it?! As a natural born overthinker my mind is always buzzing with plans, analysing things and myself, multi-tasking continuously. I made several New Year’s Resolutions this year, including to give 1% of my day every day to myself! 1% is 15 mins, all for me and no one else! I’ve been using this time to practise mindfulness using the Calm App, to journal or complete a gratitude exercise. These activities keep me grounded. I use an old-fashioned notebook to journal, but there are many apps out there like Day One, Journey or Memento to try. When my brain is in overdrive, journaling really helps, I can get things out of my head and it allows me to stand back, slow down and see the bigger picture – that word perspective again! So whatever you are planning in 2018 – be it your wedding or a new goal, do your best to keep perspective, stay positive and know that tomorrow is a new day. If you feel Yoga might be an activity that could help support you in your 2018 goals then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me for a chat. “Start where you stand and never mind the past, The past won’t help you in beginning new, If you have left it all behind at last. Why, that’s enough, you’re done with it, you’re through; This is another chapter in the book, This is another race that you have planned, Don’t give the vanished days a backward look, Start where you stand." THE "PARK RUN" EXPERIENCE By Marisa Reidy

JUNIOR PARK RUN

IF you’re looking for an ideal, fun and free way to get your family fit and healthy for the new year then look no further than the weekly Park Run experience that is sweeping the nation of late.

Given the success and popularity of the Saturday morning Park Run in Tralee, the group felt the need to organise a Junior Park Run on Sundays – a job that befell local couple Caroline and Colm Lynch. Almost a year on, the event is still going strong with hundreds of children between the ages of 4 and 15 taking part in the shorter, 2k event each Sunday morning, again at 9.30am.

Open to participants from four to 94 and of all abilities and experience, this relatively new phenomenon may just be the solution to your family’s fitness woes right at your doorstep. Celebrating its third anniversary this month, the Tralee Park Run now welcomes between 180 and 200 participants to Tralee Town Park every Saturday morning at 9.30am – a number that event founder Siobhan Kearney says she is really happy with.

Siobhan, who has recently celebrated her 100th Park Run, explained that the Saturday morning 5k course is open to people of all ages and abilities, where no one needs to feel shy or embarrassed about their fitness – or lack thereof. “Although it’s called a Park ‘Run’ we really do encourage walkers as well and that’s what people need to understand. You don’t have to run it at all. It’s not a race and you’re not competing against anyone except yourself, which is why so many people love it,” she said. “We get lots of families who come and walk it, while others run it, so it really does cater for people of all abilities. What we’ve found is it’s particularly popular with children and teens who would not be particularly sporty, simply because it’s at their own pace and it’s not a competition.” While registration for the weekly 5k event is not necessary, Joanne says it is nice to register once you’ve decided to take part as it allows you to track your personal progress and gain rewards at certain milestones, such as 50, 100 and 250 completed runs. There are also weekly Park Run events in Listowel and Killarney, with participants allowed to scan their registration barcodes at any of these events, as well as Park Run events across the country, Pictures by: John Ryle

Siobhan is also on the core team behind the Junior Park run and says it is fantastic to see so many youngsters coming out and taking part in such a wonderful occasion. While parents are always welcome to accompany their children on the shorter course on Sundays, their participation isn’t logged like the Saturday event, as it’s officially a children-only affair!

“Both events have become really popular and as well as being a really lovely, fun occasion, it’s wonderful to see the progress people are making the more and more they take part.” For more about registering for Park Runs in Tralee, Killarney or Listowel, visit www.parkrun.ie and find your local event.

LUSCIOUS LIPS BY: DR SUSAN CREAN BDS(NUI)MFD RCSI

LUSCIOUS LIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR!! If you have spent a lot of time trying to get fuller lips you are probably frustrated by now.Getting that sexy smile with luscious lips is something that we all desire. Are you sick of seeing your lipstick bleeding!! Or have started noticing that your lips are thinning and becoming more wrinkled.Fuller lips are a sign of glamour and youth and as we all know a smile is a woman`s best accessory. Many patients desire fuller more defined lips but fear they may look overdone. They`re hesitant because they have observed people whose lips have been overfilled. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. In reality ,the cases which appear to have work “done” are those which were done badly. Lip filler /augumentation should look as natural as possible. I am a firm believe that less is more especially when treating patients with dermal fillers.Lip augumentation can be done to both the upper and lower lips to give a fuller , sexier more youthful appearance. The filler is added to the lips to plump the lips and reduce the vertical lines seen during ageing.Nowadays dermal filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid. A natural product which is present in the body but depletes during ageing i.e the filler becomes part of you. Hyaluronic acid is found within skin cells and it helps to lock in the moisture.Once you reach your 40`s the Hyaluronic acid stores reduce and the lips become thin and start to fade with fine lines and age spots. There are three main filler products available. However, I tend use Bocouture due to its optimal tissue intergration and reliablilty. It also contains lidocaine an anaesthetic which numbs the area as you inject, however, I also administer a dental block before treatment to ensure further comfort. The filler is an exciting non surgical approach to reshaping the lips. It generally lasts for up to 6 months . All patients are invited to attend the surgery for a free consultation beforehand where they are assessed for treatment and advised if they are suitable for dermal fillers . We are currently offering a 20% discount on all filler treatments for the month of January. All treatments /dosages are based on clinical need varying from .5ml syringe to 1 ml. I completed extensive training in facial aesthetics with the Harley Academy in London and am currently completing a Masters Degree in Facial aesthetics.

Fashion Fix

Having spent the Christmas feasting excessively, I’m sure most of you like me have now parted company with the Quality Street. New Year, new you? If you have already started your New Year fitness regime but like me have already fallen off the bandwagon, then it’s time to ditch the oversized t-shirt and leggings and get back on track. What better way to get you motivated than with some new gear. What you are wearing when exercising is very important as feeling self-conscious will affect your mood and performance. With some new gear in your wardrobe you may find yourself working out more just as an excuse to wear them. You can go the expensive route when it comes to gear, but if you are looking to get the most for your money, there are plenty of inexpensive options also available with new fitness brands popping up everyday. If you are feeling flush with the cash Body by Byram launched by Amanda Byram last November is a range of activewear which is stocked in Pamela Scott and Arnotts. 1. BODYBYBYRAM Navy & Black Maia Bra Top €50.00 2. BODYBYBYRAM Navy & Black Clio ¾ legging €60.00 With the world of sport and fashion now coming together to create pieces at high street prices, looking good has never been so easy. H & M, F + F by Tesco, Penneys and M & S are some of the high street brands now sporting fitness gear. 3. H & M Sports Bra €19.99 & Sports Tights €22.99 4. PENNEYS Sweatshirt €6, Leggings €13 Today sports shoes can be worn just about anywhere and are not limited to just the gym or going for a run so picking the right pair has never been so important. With so many different styles on the market and an endless wall of style and colours to choose from there are a number of things to consider when choosing which is best for you. When it comes to choosing a pair for exercise think function over fashion and don’t be mean with the cash. Fit is everything. One rule of thumb I always follow is ‘if they don’t feel comfortable when you put them on, move on to the next pair. Finally, a good sports bra is the most important piece of clothing when exercising. Wearing something without support can cause back ache and discomfort, slowing you down and ruining your workout. So what’s stopping you? Embrace the world of fashionable sportswear to assist you in reaching your fitness goals to a NEW YOU!

Planning your Big Day

Planning a wedding can be daunting, so many suggestions from well-meaning family and friends, we chat with wedding coordinator at Jacks Cromane, Pauline Moroney to get her tips and ideas to help you plan more smoothly, we also look at other alternatives to add the finishing touches to your day….

So you’ve gotten Engaged ....... By: Pauline Moroney – Wedding Co-Ordinator Jacks Coastguard Restaurant, Cromane

Congratulations, exciting times ahead. Now that you have showed off your ring, celebrated accordingly, it might be time to decide on your Wedding date and to start thinking about Wedding Venues. Here’s our Top 5 Tips on deciding where to have your wedding and what to ask the Wedding Venue Co-Ordinator when you meet him/her. Let’s be honest, we’re spoilt for choice in Kerry when it comes to amazing wedding venues. So the first thing you need to consider is what type of venue do you want? Would you like to have your reception in a romantic castle, a traditional hotel, a stately country home or maybe an award winning restaurant in Cromane overlooking the sea that can seat up to 130 guests! (ahem :D) Once you have that decided, it’s time to start looking at dream venues. When you have decided on the type of venue you want, ask for recommendations. Mention it your colleagues at work, family members and close friends – you may have not been to a wedding at a particular venue but someone you know will have and can advise you on the food, service etc. Never underestimate the power of recommendations – sometimes it’s worth looking into these suggestions. Create a shortlist of three to five places you’re really interested in and check their availability on your preferred date. If the venue is available on your preferred date, ask for a wedding pack to be sent to you and arrange a meeting with their wedding co-ordinator, check out their grounds for photos too. The minefield that is THE WEDDING PACK – so not all wedding packs are the same, not all wedding packs are clear and straight forward – sometimes they are darn right confusing, am I right?? So here’s a list of what we would suggest asking the Wedding Venue Co-Ordinator either via email or when you’re meeting him or her. Drinks Reception – Maybe you want Bubbly on arrival or you might prefer a Gin Bar & Beers, Decide on what you want. Ask how much it is if the venue supply the drinks or can you supply the drinks, do they charge corkage on reception drinks Canapes – Are you having some? Yes or No Your Meal – Have a menu that you like ready include starters, soup course (sometimes optional), mains and dessert Evening Food - Do you want traditional sandwiches & hot food or any alternative choices

20 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

Wine – Can you bring your own wine – how much is corkage – cost if venue provides wine - ½ bottle per person Any additional information – ask if there are any extra’s that you need to know about. Does the Venue offer anything complimentary like menus & the table plan, music, flowers? Finally ask for a total cost per person for your package including any additional extra’s so you can clearly see how much your wedding will cost. Once you’ve seen the venues, looked through their wedding pack, received a quote, had a look around and talked the venue co-ordinator– pick your favourite place and book it, call the co-ordinator and confirm the wedding date. Ask for written confirmation of your package, including any extras such as corkage and payment terms then sign on the dotted line. I hope these few tips will help you find your perfect venue with as little stress as possible. Happy Planning! -------------------------------------------------

Add a touch of class to your pre-dinner drinks reception and give your guests a unique and memorable experience with the beautiful sound of the saxophone. John Collins is a saxophonist with a modern rich tone and high quality sound. Tralee born John is an experienced, trained musician. He played in London for wedding receptions and social events for many years. He now plays regularly at Ballyroe Heights and The Listowel Arms, and other venues throughout Kerry. With over 1500 tunes to suit all tastes, ranging from contemporary to classic songs, John will create the perfect atmosphere on your special day. He is happy to include the bride and groom’s favourite tunes. Go ahead and make your pre-dinner drinks reception stylishly different and wow your guests. Check out a sample of John’s music on YouTube (John Collins Sax Player Kerry) and Facebook (John Collins Sax Player Tralee), or contact John on 086 2282117.

Choosing a Wedding Dress Choosing a wedding dress is one of the most important decisions a girl can make, so should you have dreamed of the big white gown since you were very small or if it’s something simple planning is the key, we ask International and award winning designer Don O Neill what’s hot and what’s not for the autumn as we tend to shop now for weddings later in the year.

For Fall 2018 Brides around the world are embracing "Sexy".

Plunging necklines, backless gowns and the biggest trend of all sheer / see through dresses are all the rage , and are the most popular dresses right now at our THEIA trunk shows. As always at THEIA we steer our brides towards sophisticated elegance. My take on sexy, while still showing lots of skin, remains tasteful and elegant.

For Fall 2018 I have gowns with sheer illusion tulle bodices where the breasts and parts of the torso or sleeves are strategically covered with hand embroideries of glass micro beads, pearls and mirrored sequins. For security and a hint of modesty, discreet nude silk charmeuse covered bra cups are stitched inside the bodice. Just enough skin is still revealed beneath the sheer illusion tulle, to take your breath away without inducing any heart attacks on your wedding day. For a more modest bride who still wants to be part of the sexy trend , we focused on dramatic plunging necklines, narrow deep dramatic "V" 's that are strategically surrounded with swirling vines of glass beads and 3-d organza flowers. These Bodices are lined with and have built in support. We continued this season with our "un-Lined" gowns, either hand beaded or in lace, for which we make separate slip linings in 4 colors. The bride can choose a classic Ivory, Blush, Cloud Blue or Nude slip lining. We have brides wearing them with just a nude body suit! Simplicity is also a signature at THEIA and a continuing trend addressed with our crepe gowns, the Bruna slip dress with spaghetti straps and plunging "V" neck was a huge hit. This season I introduced a heavy weight fluid satin, one that skims close to the body without revealing every lump and bump beneath, its bias cut is flattering, a spaghetti strap slip dress that harkens back to the 1920's is refreshingly clean and modern. 22 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

A new take on the satin is our kimono jump suit which proved to be one of most popular items from the 2018 collection with stores snapping it up as a great same sex wedding piece, or rehearsal dinner day after party look.

The THEIA winter 2018 bride is daring, provocative and super sexy.

How to select perfect wedding bands... The Christmas season is behind us and for couples who got engaged in 2017, now is the time to select a sparkling set of weddings bands as a symbol of their love for the rest of their lives. The 2018 wedding season is well under way, so what should brides and grooms look out for when selecting their rings? We asked Heather O’Sullivan at John Ross Jewellers, Tralee: There is a huge array of wedding band styles out there, so your first step should be to visit your local jeweller as a couple for a consultation. Make sure to decide a budget in advance and let the jeweller know. Then they can select the best quality to suit the amount you want to spend. The jeweller will examine your engagement ring to establish if it is platinum, white gold, yellow gold, etc. You will have to match the metal. For example, if you have an 18ct white gold engagement ring, your wedding band must then also be made of 18ct gold. Mixing different metals is not advised. Once you know which metal is right for you, the next important decision is the style of ring. Do you want a diamond set wedding band? Or a plain one? Or maybe your engagement ring has an unusual shape and you will need to have a custom-made ring to fit in next to it? If your engagement ring has a halo or diamond set shoulders, you may wish to replicate the setting style on the wedding band. The groom will also need to try on rings. He should carefully consider the metal he would like, what kind of design he prefers and the comfort of the ring. Wedding rings are generally made to order, so shop early. If you leave it until the last minute, you may not have sufficient time to get the ring of your dreams made. Once you have selected your wedding bands you can add to the symbolism of the rings by personalising them with engraving. Also, for some ceremonies you will need a wedding coin for the Exchange of Gifts. Most jewellers will provide these extras free of charge. Once your rings are ordered, you can relax and look forward to your big day.

Hey everyone, I hope your not suffering with the January blues too much and had a fabulous Christmas. Loads of lovely ladies got engaged over the Christmas period as per usual so this is a very popular time of the year for wedding planning.

Here are some of my Hair Tips to keep in mind on the run up to your Big Day! • It is important you have decided on what colour you want your hair to be a few months in advance and keep it in its best condition with regular trims and treatments. Do not do any drastic changes the week of the wedding. • Do your trial well in advance and make sure your stylist allocates enough time for you to try a few options. Consider you may need extensions seek your stylist opinion on this. I find it handy when a bride brings a few pictures of ideas she likes it puts the two of us on the same page instantly and then I can recommend other similar styles.

Top Tip • I think it's a very good idea to have your hair trial the morning of a dress fitting so you get a clear idea of how your dress and hair look together. • Diamond/pearly headpieces stand out beautifully on dark hair whilst blonde hair would be amazing in an intricate upstyle. • Brunettes who are putting their hair up for the day should consider introducing a few lowlights to show the detail of their updo. • Lastly leave all the worrying to the professional, trust that you have picked the right team to assist your big day and enjoy every minute of it.

Hi Readers, It's hard to believe it's February already, and traditionally it was known as the month of "love" not so much any more as there is no month that we don't have wedding party's calling in to us to get sorted. February is the month we complete our stock turn around so gone are the Autumn / Winter colours and they are replaced by Spring / Summer vibrant shades. Although we may have established ourselves as a shop for accessories for weddings, we also can put the finishing touches to outfits for confirmation and communion. When the outfit has been purchased the hard work is done, I know you are all blue in the face from my saying bring in what you need matched up but it does save a lot of tears (mostly mine!). I have lost count the amount of times I have heard "I know the colour Carmel". If your outfit is "busy" by this I mean lots going on, it takes very little to put finishing touches to that, simple shawl, court shoe and plain colour clutch bag, if on the other hand your outfit is "plain" you can get multi colour bag and multi colour shoes etc. I suppose what I am trying to say is the mixing and matching to enhance outfits is endless. I have included some images of our new stock which we are receiving daily. I have to rush off now and make a space for the endless supply of Valentine Cards I am hoping to get.... A girl can dream!!!! Until next time Keep smiling

Carmel x

ONES TO WATCH 2018 HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YE ALL! ......I’ve been keeping a close eye on who is up and coming for 2018 and have put together a list of a few notable ones I simply can’t stop listening to…. IRISH ACTS 1. Wyvern Lingo Wyvern Lingo are three amazingly talented ladies (Caoimhe Barry - vocals and drums, Karen Crowley- vocals, synth, bass and Saoirse Duane - vocals and guitar) and have always been friends first, band second. Junior school alliances built to withstand the torments of puberty and teenage rites of passage. Young hearts but witchy old souls with a private language the wyvern lingo.

Wyvern Lingo bring their stories together on their debut album, simply called “Wyvern Lingo”. They say - “We were trying to find a title that would capture a glimpse into our world, what better way than to selftitle the album. This is us. ” The trio self-released their first EP - “The Widow Knows” in 2014, which brought them to the attention of Irish independent label Rubyworks. Extensive international touring followed with James Vincent McMorrow and fellow-Bray native Hozier, and a second EP - “Letter To Willow” Their haunting harmonies and endless abundance of talent across multiple instruments will captivate you. Find them on Facebook/Instagram and twitter for updates on releases and your dates and make sure you catch them live in mike the pies listowel on March 8th, you will not be disappointed. 2. Le Boom Since appearing as a duo under the Le Boom name last summer and garnering 230,000 Spotify plays for their debut single 'What We Do', Christy Leech and Aimie Mallon have quickly become one of the most sought-after new acts in Irish music. Between Leech’s falsetto and 38 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

Mallon’s manic percussive energy, there’s an infectious buzz in their music. Last August, the band released their debut single ‘What We Do’ and their New single ‘Don’t Need It Now’ is a live favourite from the past year. It’s a song that has that same melodic playfulness as their debut single with an added rhythmic toughness and swerve. In November, Le Boom played their first sold out headline show in Whelan’s Dublin and have many more gigs on the way in 2018. Check them out on twitter and Facebook ‘weareleboom’. 3. Konmak x Marty Konmak and Marty Guilfoyle first came together in June 2015 when they became part of KBM since then they have gone on as a duo and they have had 7 tracks make the top 100 Shazamed tracks in Ireland which is the most out of any electronic producing act in Ireland. As well as producing and playing, you might recognise Marty as he has a mixshow on Spin 1038 and Spin South West called House Party. Their new single ‘another night’ is out now on Sony ireland records. Check out their social media pages for behind the scenes at gigs and updates on releases and tour dates. KERRY ACT Tom lucey Tom Lucey is a Singer/Songwriter from Killarney. December 2017 saw the release of Tom's latest single "My Love". His second Ep ‘Untold Stories’ came in 2016 containing five tracks of which two were released as singles, ‘Charlie’ and ‘We March On’. Off the back of this Ep came the ‘Untold Stories’ Tour. Have a listen on Spotify and iTunes and of course you can find him on Facebook ‘Tom Lucey’ for updates on releases and gig dates. FROM ACROSS THE POND Scott Bradlees Postmodern jukebox PMJ originally blew up online, with new videos added weekly that keep finding creative new ways to put creator Scott Bradlee’s trademark vintage twist on modern pop hits. Since Bradlee created the project in 2009, PMJ has amassed more than 880 million YouTube views and 3.1 million subscribers, chalked up more than 1.2 million likes on Facebook! Imagine marrying the 21st century party vibe of Miley Cyrus or the minimalist angst of Radiohead with the crackly warmth of a vintage 78 or the plungermuted barrelhouse howl of a forgotten Kansas City jazzman. Bradlee’s choice of material ranges from the ‘80s hard rock of Guns N’ Roses to hits as recent as 2015’s Justin Bieber plea “Sorry.” Check them out on Facebook and Spotify to hear your favourite songs with a 20’s twist to them! They will be in Cork opera house feb 28th and I would highly recommend them live. I hope ye are all settling back into lessons/ rehearsals and gigs after hopefully a reading Xmas break. It was certainly a shock to the system first week back in January but back into full swing now approaching exam time. If ye have any questions or index recommendations about Music education or live acts to listen to please get in touch via social media links above! Keep an eye on Connect Kerry social media pages to enter a great competition too…. Until next month…..

HOW I GOT HERE .... By: Mary Lucey (Principal, Kerry College of Further Education) In this months issue, Mary Lucey, Principal, Kerry College of Further Education meets ..... Mary J Leen, a very creative and unique business woman and stained glass artist. She works from her home at the foot of the Sliabh Mish Mountains and has been commissioned to create the most amazing pieces of artwork. Mary featured on RTE’s Nationwide programe twice, has been on several radio stations discussing her work including Cork’s 96fm, West Limerick 102 and Radio Kerry. Mary worked on a significant job with Jameson Whiskey. She received Kerry Business Woman of the Year two years running and received both regional and national media coverage with her art work on numerous occasions. She was published in the Gathering book of “Notable Irish Artists of Our Time". Mary’s work is in public and private collections all over the world. Tell us About Yourself… I am a contemporary stained glass artist and public art creator. Stained glass is traditionally seen as a craft, I aim to combine my artistic training to create art as opposed to craft works. I have successfully endeavoured to break the shackles of pre-concieved ideas that stained glass is only for churches. I create original artworks in my own design and this has resulted in securing a number of sucessful commissions against mainstream artists. Although stained glass is seen as a male dominated industry - due to the physicality of the work - I have never experienced any discrimination when applying for work and thankfully do not consider that my gender presents any obstacles in my work. I work full time on public and private commissions; plus private work for exhibitions. To date, I have created for art schemes in schools and worked extensively for Kerry County Council on various art projects around the county. I also run exclusive stained glass workshops once a year from my studio. I have recently set up and run another business called ‘Leenula’ creating bespoke Jewellery. After Leaving School… I always knew I wanted to go to Art College and I was very focused on doing the best portfolio I could to get there. While in 5th and 6th year of school, I had the good fortune to study painting with the internationally renowned painter Carl N. Batternay, this had a massive impact on me. I travelled to Kenmare every weekend to study painting with him. This led me on to undertake an Art Post Leaving Certificate PLC course and I began to build a very solid foundation for an art career. I was always supported by my parents and they generally trusted me and so left me to my own devices. I was very determined to do art and I think that they could see that in me. I initially thought that I would be a painter as I had natural talent for painting. This changed when I went to Crawford Art College and I studied sculpture. I was hungry to learn techniques and I felt this was the best way to make the most of my time in college. After my 4 years in College, I felt that my love of art had been crushed and I stopped creating altogether. So I briefly worked selling antique jewellery. I then moved to Edinburgh and got a job as a make-up artist. I loved this but it wasn’t creative enough for me- plus I didn’t like the pushy sales agenda that the company had, so I went back to college and did a Masters in Professional Design Practice in the Dublin Institute of Technology. This led me to work as a graphic designer for 3 years. 40 | Connect Kerry | February 2018

How Did You Discover Stained Glass Artistry as a Career… Once again after some time, I felt that I was off my career path and that I wasn’t using my natural abilities or being creative enough so I left my job as graphic designer. I decided to travel around Europe in the footsteps of artists of old for inspiration for my next move. This was a difficult decision, but I felt intuitively that I had to go. It was on this trip that I realised that I would love to do more work with stained glass. I would spend hours in churches looking at stained glass windows wondering how they were made. In fact, I spent more time in churches then in galleries, which even surprised me. So following my gut to do what felt right, again I did some research and I decided to do an apprenticeship in Siena, Italy, under the tutorage of Alberto Positiano. After three months travelling, I left for Italy on my own, without a word of Italian. I still remember the first time I sat down to paint a stained glass window, I had a very surreal moment where I felt like all the seeking for the right path was over and that I had finally reached that elusive place of destiny. It just felt easy and right. I spent 4 months in Italy and upon my return; I immediately began setting up my stained glass business at the foothills of the Sieve Mish Moutain. I completed a “start you own business course” with North and East Kerry Development which was fantastic to educate me about the business side of things. 6 years later on, I am still busy working away in the foothills of the Slieve Mish Mountain. This could not have happened if it were not for the support of my father as he helped me every step of the way and he continues to do so every day. What now? My absolute urge to explore creativity and the need to be constantly learning still burns in me like an eternal fire and this is what has led me to expand my creative practice to start making jewellery. This is already taking off successfully and I have orders already accumulating for bespoke jewellery. Looking back, have you any regrets? Looking back I have no regrets whatsoever; when it comes to my meandering career choices. Each job and course I did enriched the work I am doing now. Without the various experiences I had, I feel my work would have been missing a vital element, be it graphic design or sales or jewellery. I really feel like my life to date has been like a perfect tapestry, made up of each part of my experiences, the sum of which brings me to the present. Advice for people? The seemingly unimportant meanders that life throws at you will align you perfectly with your perfect destiny. I truly believe that there are no mistakes in life, if you listen to your heart and follow your inner guidance system. www.maryjleenart.com Mary Lucey may be contacted at marylucey@kerryfe.ie

Magic Is Something You Make! “Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience “ Def. So what does that actually mean? Creative content is the key to driving customers to your door. It’s everything you read, hear and see, whether that’s in print, online, TV or wherever. Effectively it’s about creating something that your target customers will engage with, and in turn engage with your business, and then creating it again and again to keep your customers coming back. These days, as business owners, you have a huge amount of options when it comes to marketing. You can do it yourself, have a member of staff do it, hire an agency or a team of freelancers. Retirement Age Clause in the Employee Contract There is no compulsory retirement age in Ireland but many contracts whether in the private or public sector can include a retirement age. Where the retirement age is not outlined in the contract of employment, employees are free to work beyond the age of 65 which is generally the age employees are expected to retire in most sectors. Currently the government are looking at measures to tackle the rising cost of State pensions by aiming towards allowing workers to work beyond their 65th birthday if they want. Laws were introduced in the UK 5 years ago which make it possible for an employer to make an employee retire only if they can provide a “public interest” reason. This highlights the need to increase the State pension age in line with life expectancy which is happening gradually here. More increases in the qualifying age for the State pension are due to come into effect over the coming years. It will increase to 67 years in 2021 and to 68 years in 2028. The Equality Act 2015 came into effect on 1 January 2016 to align Irish legislation with European law regarding retirement ages. This amends the Employment Equality Acts 1998 – 2015 and outlines that employers must objectively justify their mandatory retirement age going forward. The Act reflects what has been the position in Europe for a number of years. In a recent case a barman in Knock airport was awarded €6500 in a discrimination case. The employee stated that he was fit and well and that there was no reason that he could not continue in the role. In addition to this the company does not have a policy on the retirement age although they claimed that the custom and practice had been that all employees retire at 65. The Labour Court ruled that the barman could not have had any knowledge of the retirement age of 65 years. The Court therefore found that the employee was dismissed by reason of his age and that the dismissal was discriminative. The employee was awarded €6,500.
