SUMMER TAN SAFETY TIPS
Travels, definitely one to watch out for with lots of tempting dishes from all over the country. We also have a chat with the team from Chernobyl here in Kerry to find out a bit about the wonderful work

they are doing on their dental project over there. Such a great thing to do for those kids. Our food page is slightly different this month as Mark gives us top tips on the proper knives to use, while Karen is keeping with the weather in our beauty page with tanning advice. So school is out and this usually means lots of stressed out parents planning childcare for the next two months. Just remember, if you can at all make a little time for the little ones, it can be hard but they need sometime too, work will still be there, kids grow up, and they usually grow up way too fast, so create memories of the

THE HEALTHY TAN MYTH
Here in Ireland, we love a good tan. We go on holidays across the globe to try and achieve that much longed-for golden glow that we simply can’t get here. We take matters into our own hands and hop into sunbeds once or twice a week to give our skin a bit of encouragement to get a nice healthy colour. When the sun comes out at home, we head straight for the beach with baby oil and bikinis in tow.
After all, a bit of a tan is healthy isn’t it? We have all heard about UVA and UVB rays. We have all been told to lather on the sunscreen when we get a good day. We all know to wear facial moisturiser with a high factor SPF to prevent premature skin aging. We all know that sunbeds are controversial and we all know that you’re advised to stay out of the sun between 12-3pm, the hottest part of the day. What a lot of us don’t realise is that that healthy tan we all lust after, doesn’t exist. All that does exist is sun damage. UVA rays are the main tanning rays and they get deeper into the layers of skin than UVB. They are a major source of wrinkles and skin aging, as well as playing a part in the development of some skin cancers. UVB rays are the primary cause of skin cancers and sunburn and they can burn your skin all year round. Infrared radiation is the recent focus of skin damage research and it is now thought that it may actually cause more damage than UVA. So what exactly is a tan? A tan is the result of damage to the skin’s DNA. The skin darkens as it tries to prevent further damage. When you hop into a sun bed, you are exposing your skin to concentrated UVA rays. You are, for all intents and purposes, roasting your skin. When you go out in the sun without adequate sun protection, you are allowing free radicals to damage the skin. When you lather on baby oil and lay in the sun’s ray for a few hours, you are basically like that piece of bacon in a frying pan, sizzling away to your heart’s content.
But surely this is if you overdo it or the worst case scenario right? Wrong! Every time you do any of these things, it damages the skin. It can happen that one time you forget the sunblock at the beach or that one time you think you don’t need SPF because you’re driving and not going outside, or even that one time you go for a twenty minute walk and think you surely don’t need to protect your skin for twenty minutes. Sun damage can happen on cloudy, miserable days. An important fact to remember is that you don’t need to see the sun for it to do damage. The best approach to sun care and protection is to be consistent and sensible. Use a high factor SPF and remember to reapply every so often, especially after being in the water or sweating a lot. Use a separate sunblock for your face as ones for the body can irritate facial skin, block pores and go really greasy. Remember your hands, feet and ears. Use light clothing to cover skin for added protection in heat. Avoid sunbeds and lying in the sun for hours. And finally, embrace your skin the way it is. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side - but at what cost?

SALON OF THE MONTH After some months of stress and working long hours it was time to take a little break away from it all so after little deliberation it was off to the spa at the wonderful surroundings of the Aghadoe Heights Hotel in Killarney. Resting on a hilltop overlooking the magnificent splendor of Lough Leane Aghadoe is a special and spiritual place. Greeted by a very pleasant therapist we were given ultra-comfy gowns and clogs to change into to begin our journey to the Thermal Suite, there are 4 different thermal heat cabins two wet and two dry, all more relaxing then each other, The aroma grotto was my particular favorite as I was suffering from a little bronchial congestion and this was the ideal solution, from there we took our place on the mosaic heated loungers as we waited for treatments,. My therapist arrived and began the treatments with a very relaxing foot ritual, with the feet relaxed it was on to the radiance Voya Facial, my skin is quiet sensitive so I love the gentleness of the voya range it was refreshing and relaxing and the mixture of seaweed, rosehip, green tea and chamomile it was detoxifying and firming with an amazing glow left on the skin. Then it was on to the back to life message, where the therapist used a blend of natural oils to free some tricky knots in the upper shoulder area, it certainly lives up to the name and brings one back to life. We were then brought to the light relaxation area where snug throws and smooth music through headphones completed the relaxation experience Reluctant to leave the relaxing atmosphere we decided it was time to have lunch, aWith panoramic views of Killarney’s lakes and mountains and possibly the most relaxing atmosphere in Ireland, The Heights Lounge and Piano Bar is the ideal setting for casual light bites or traditional afternoon tea. There was a delicious choice of menu and something for everyone, I opted for the Chicken Curry which came recommended from our waiter of the day, and what a choice it was mouthwatering and the presentation was outstanding. All in all a most relaxing and enjoyable day out, batteries recharged and ready for the world again, I would highly recommend this little time out to all you busy ladies looking for the perfect escape for a few hours.look

IS IT THRUSH?
THE BURNING QUESTION!
At least 1 in 10 women consult their doctors at some stage regarding burning, itching or discharge in their “lady bits”. For many women this happens recurrently and can very distressing. In many cases women presume it is thrush (the more common name for candida, a yeast infection). The sensation can be so distressing that people rush to a pharmacy and but Over The Counter products with getting an actual diagnosis. Rather than using creams and tablets over and over I would recommend attending a doctor at the time of an acute episode to be examined and have specialist swabs taken to get an accurate diagnosis. What can cause vulvitis/ burning? Thrush is a common cause of itchiness and burning. If swabs taken at the time of a severe outbreak do not show candida then it very likely that some other condition is present. This could include: • Other genital tract infections including bacterial vaginosis, TV or a Sexually Transmitted Infection. • A skin disorder such as psoriasis/ eczema or dermatitis • Atrophy or skin thinning which can occur in older women or in younger women breastfeeding for a prolonged period. • Allergic reaction to something in contact with the skin. • Very rarely a skin tumour could be present • Chronic soreness can be caused by a condition called vulvadynia- this diagnosis is more common than we
realise and overlooked because of the presumption of “thrush”. What to do if you get burning and soreness It is very tempting to reach for the creams and tablets when you are going out of your mind!! However a visit to a doctor or STI Clinic means that you get a professional examination and almost immediate diagnosis. If a skin disorder is present a biopsy can be taken. Very often our patients are asked to “self-swab” at home at a time they feel their symptoms are at their worst.
allergy to condoms or spermicides. Medical treatments can include: • Medications specific to any infection cultured on a swab • Occasionally vaginal oestrogen tablets can be used for women with atrophy after menopause or associated with prolonged breastfeeding • Steroid creams can be used but prolonged use of strong steroids can actually have a negative effect. • For women with possible vulvadynia (www.nva.org) the treatment can be very specialist and involve a combination of medications and specialist physiotherapy. • Underlying medical conditions such as diabetes should be looked at where symptoms are recurring. Key Points • Do not always presume soreness in your genital area is thrush. • Particularly in cases where symptoms are recurring a medical examination and opinion should be sought • There are lots of lifestyle changes that can help and should always be looked at as an adjunct to medical treatments *all advice here is general information for advisory purpose only so please consult with your own doctor for full professional advice on your concerns.
Simple lifestyle changes can eliminate possible products causing allergies. This can include: • • • • •
• •
Avoid using panty liners and other sanitary protection that have perfumes and bleaches in them. Avoid washing in shower gels, strongly scented soaps. Use special emollients (moisturising) to keep the skin from drying out. Even washing your hair in the shower allows shampoos to trickle down to this very sensitive area. Avoid using strong detergents for washing clothes that come in contact with your lady bits i.e. underwear, pyjamas and bed sheets. Fabric softeners and scented tumble drier sheets are often full of chemicals. Avoid hair removal creams in that area where possible. If outbreaks are triggered after sex consider whether it could be an

More than 500 people attended the Kerry launch of a new book, ‘Tough as Leather’, which focuses on the life and success of Kerry athlete and former World Mountain running champion John Lenihan from Ballymacelligott. The MC for the night was Weeshie
“The response to the book had been phenomenal. The launch was a magical occasion with guests from all over Ireland attending. The book, tracing Johns sporting and personal life, will ensure his achievements will be acknowledged into the future and his name preserved in the folklore of Kerry and Irish sport,” said Con Dennehy. The 220 page book has more than 190 dramatic photographs and was designed by Ballymacelligott graphic designer Lily Lenihan. The Dublin launch of the book takes place at the end of the month. HELLO AGAIN EVERYONE, HOPE YOU HAVE ALL BEEN ENJOYING THE SUMMER. THIS MONTH I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT AN ITEM THAT I CONSIDER TO BE THE UNSUNG HERO OF FASHION! THE VERY VERSATILE MAXI DRESS. FIRST DESIGNED BY OSCAR DE LA RENTA IN THE LATE 60’S, THE EVER FASHION FORWARD KATE MOSS WORE A SILK MAXI TO A WEDDING IN 2008 AND MAXI FEVER TOOK HOLD. BY 2010 THE MAXI WAS A SLIGHTLY LONGER VERSION OF THE 60’S ORIGINAL.
There are several reasons why I love the maxi dress but their versatility is high on the list. A Maxi dress can be used in so many ways, dress it down with a denim or cropped jacket with flats/wedges for easy daywear and a relaxed Sunday lunch. Add heels, complimentary shawl and headpiece and you are ready for any wedding. Maxi dresses make stunning evening attire and come in a variety of necklines with or without sleeves. I wasn’t able to attend the recent highly successful Connect Lee Strand Kerry Women in Business awards but judging by the photographs there were a good few stylish ladies in maxi dresses showing they were both business and fashion savvy. Another advantage of the maxi is that all ages and shapes can wear one, from teenage girls to ladies in the actress Helen Mirren’s age group (who has been photographed looking stunning in her maxi and denim jacket); there is a maxi dress for everyone. We currently have a beautiful range of maxi dresses just arrived in Annburys. My final reason for admiration has to be the fact that nearly every woman I’ve ever sold a maxi dress to has been amazed how comfortable and flattering they really are, because as I keep saying whatever you wear you must be comfortable. Well that’s all for now, enjoy the rest of the summer HAPPY SHOPPING,

Pearly Whites
Marcas Mac Domhnaill
Pearly Whites – Protect Them Fáilte romhaibh arís, a chairde. Teeth have many enemies. Plaque and tartar are some of the common enemies. Some of the forgotten dangers are attrition, abrasion and erosion. Attrition is the breakdown of tooth structure when teeth are grinding off each other. It is often a symptom of stress and we often see worn down teeth as a result of it. Many people can go through a period of grinding and clenching their teeth from time to time. It is often done by students around examination time. For most people it is a short lived episode and does not do much long term damage. For others, however, the habit of clenching and grinding can continue throughout life. This leads to worn and chipped teeth. It can start at any time in life. In fact, many adults may start grinding and clenching only in their senior years, and it is often associated with dementia. In these cases, teeth can be snapped off quite quickly. Help is at hand however. For those with a habit of night-time grinding, night guards are available. These are acrylic gum shields that fit over the teeth and are only worn at night. They prevent the upper and lower teeth from grinding off each other and help prevent damage to teeth. For people who have dementia it would be very important to get a full dental and oral examination as soon as a diagnosis of dementia is made. This is the ideal but unfortunately it is very seldom that it is carried out. Preventative dental treatment at this stage can make things much easier for the patient, their family and the dental team. Dr. Alison Dougall in Dublin is a leader in this field and she is hoping that this will become HSE policy in the near future. Fractured teeth can leave very sharp edges and can cause damage to the tongue and cheeks, so prevention is the best cure. Abrasion of teeth is more common now than it ever was. This is the breakdown of tooth structure from an outside force (usually a tooth brush)! When too much pressure is applied to the brush, the enamel and especially root surface can get worn away. This leaves a ledge on the side of the tooth which is likely to attract plaque and therefore decay. Root surface decay is one of the most common areas for decay in adults. Gentle but thorough brushing is recommended. Brushing advice is readily available from your dentist or hygienist. If a ledge is deep on the side of a tooth, it can be filled in with filling material. This can restore the shape of the tooth, while removing decay and the unpleasantness of sensitivity. If sensitivity is the main issue, your dentist will treat this accordingly. Erosion of teeth is more common than people think. It can be caused by acid in the diet. Fruits, fruit juices, smoothies and wine can be very acidic and lead to the loss of tooth structure. Erosion from soft drinks also can destroy the tooth surface. Many experiments have been done to show the erosive effect of soft drinks by placing dirty coins in the drink. The coins can become sparkling clean. Acid reflux from the stomach can also breakdown the tooth structure and would need medical attention from a doctor. Remember ‘Greim in am / A stitch in time. Beir Bua.

HI All In a perfect world we would have an outfit specially designed for every occasion, but then again in a perfect world I would be 6 feet tall and looking down on bored shop assistants while wearing flats, so let’s get real. You are going to the races, possibly for the first time and you have no idea what lies ahead of you there. Well here is a couple of things to consider.

To celebrate our Business Award we have a very special offer You will be walking around a field all day. I am not saying you should wear a pair of farmer’s wellies, but stilettos are a serious challenge. While you may not be trying to win the best dressed lady prize, you do want to look like you know what’s going on. If you have picked out a colourful dress, get a nice headpiece to go with it. It can just be a single colour piece, just add in a few feathers of different colours to pick up on the theme of your outfit. You will be very surprised how wonderful that can look. One more thing, it is Ireland, scorching in the morning, freezing in the afternoon. Bring a shawl in your bag. Most important of all, have a great day out, I am off to my leg stretching engineer, I’m afraid progress is painfully slow

YOU CAN’T COOK WITHOUT KNIVES! WITH MARK DOE
The most important piece of equipment in any kitchen is good, sharp knives. Chefs guard their own with their life, and it is a crime in any professional kitchen to use another chefs knives. When a chef starts at catering college the first skill that they learn is how to chop, slice and dice and also how to care for their knives. So what kind of knifes do you need at home, how much do you need to spend and how many do you need? Firstly cheap knife sets are usually poor quality and you won’t use half of the knives in them. They are also often very hard to keep sharp as they are poor made with cheap metal. The types of knives you need to get started are listed below. A cook’s knife (with an 8-10 inch blade): This is used for chopping and slicing, and is invaluable in any kitchen. A good vegetable peeler: A tomato knife or small vegetable knife. A sharpening steel to keep the edge on your knives. If you want to add to this, a long 25cm serrated or bread-knife is great for carving meat or smoked salmon and cutting bread. Buy professional chefs knives from kitchen shops and generally
speaking you get what you pay for. You can pick up the set of knifes above for anything from approx. €50-€350. To look after your knives don’t put them in the dishwasher as this will blunt them and ruin the handles. Every time you use a knife you should rub it on your sharpening steel a few times. Although steel will not sharpen a blunt knife it will ensure your knife remains sharp. So if you find cooking frustrating, it can often be not having the correct tools for the job. Starting with knives.

TREYVAUDS TRAVELS Paul where did your love of food come from, where you always in the kitchen as a kid or was it a late vocation? My love of food came from my father. He is Ireland’s original Master Chef (from the days of having 50 years hard experience as opposed to nowadays claiming that title after winning a 4 week TV show!!) I used to sit on a stool, as a kid in the kitchen at home, watching his every move and him cook every day. You have cooked for some top names; can you tell us your favourite memory of this? I have cooked, served and entertained for some serious top names. From global sporting super stars like Ronaldo, Figo and Jonah Lomu to name but a few. We’ve been very lucky to have attracted a lot of celebrities into Treyvauds over the years from

Fassbender to Flatley. But my father whips my ass with the list he has from Muhammad Ali, Elvis, Frank Sinatra & Princess Grace. And that’s not even a fraction of them!! Killarney is renowned for its very busy tourist season, do you open all year or are you seasonal? Killarney is a very seasonal town, even more so over the past 7 or 8 years but I can see it extending again now thankfully. We close for the month of January but that’s really just to recharge the batteries!! Tell us a little bit about your new show on IRISH TV? My new show (which I am currently filming) is called Treyvaud Travels. It sees me traveling all around Ireland taking you to places that get very little exposure and cooking some great recipes on location. For example, if I told you I was in Antrim, you’d expect to see The Giants Causeway! Well not with me. It’s about meeting characters. And I couldn’t care less if they have a huge business or just have one chicken out the back garden. We met this guy in Fermanagh and he was such a laugh, I changed the whole
show and just wanted to feature him. I think we have filmed, quite possibly, the most unique comedy gold with this chap!! It’s due to air in mid-September and the Irish TV bosses have already hinted at a season two!! So if you know of any characters...... What does Paul do in his spare time and don’t tell us Cook!!! My spare time seems to be getting less and less these days, but the only thing I want to do when I’m off is to be with my wife Elaine and two sons Sean & Dylan. That could be at the dinner table, out for a walk or living my sporting dreams through coaching my kids in whatever sport they want to play. If I ever thought for a single second that I got the balance wrong of working or being with my family, I’d give it all up in heartbeat. There is nothing more important in life than being with your family!

Chernobyl Children International Kerry Outreach Group The Kerry Outreach Group for Chernobyl Children International has been in operation for the past 17 years. It has been managed by the dedication of George and Mary Sugrue in Tralee. The group is most grateful for the support of the people of Kerry that has enabled them to help the children in Belarus. Volunteers from Kerry have helped with humanitarian aid convoys, the building project, the respite and recuperation project in Ireland, the medical project and the dental project. The Kerry group now concentrate on the dental outreach project. This project was started in 2006 by Tralee based dentist Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill and dental nurse Mary Sugrue. The project had a very successful trip to Vesnova Orphanage in Belarus during Easter this year. The project has gone from strength to strength having had many volunteer dentists and dental nurses from Ireland in the past nine years. 2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident and the 10th anniversary of the dental project. There is still a need for dental care in the institutions and orphanages in Belarus. The children and teenagers in these institutions are most grateful for the dental care provided to them by Irish volunteers. Indeed, every volunteer states that they receive much more themselves as volunteers, than they could ever give to these children. During the most recent dental trip, 180 children 22

were treated within the orphanage. Priority was given to scaling teeth to improve oral hygiene along with educating the carers and nurses. It is hoped that this will reduce the need for fillings and extractions in the future. Dental volunteers are always welcome. The Kerry outreach group will be holding a Flag Day in Tralee town centre on Friday, 17 July. For those interested in volunteering an hour of their time on this day or in organising a fund raising event for the dental project, please contact Mary Sugrue on 087-3733566.

Connect Business DIARY ‘Tralee – A Business Destination’ brochure launched to attract jobs to Kerry’s Capital Town TRALEE means business and to prove it, Tralee Chamber Alliance has published a new brochure to showcase Kerry’s Capital Town as the perfect destination for business, retail, education and for life. The Business Destination Brochure has been designed to give a flavour of what Tralee has to offer and why the town should be considered as a place in which to do business and ultimately boost job creation. The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “Ireland’s reputation as a world leader for ease of doing business is well established. Tralee exemplifies this with its positive approach to business across many sectors, its skilled and flexible workforce and its respect for, and encouragement of, entrepreneurial spirit and vision. All we ask is that if you are considering setting up or relocating a business that you give us a call and allow us to show you what Tralee has to offer. ”Tralee offers an unparalleled quality of life, a youthful and educated workforce, easy access to international airports and many examples of successful companies who have already established Tralee as their base. The brochure has set out to highlight the town’s vibrant, adaptable and expanding workforce which is enhanced by the presence of two major education/training

facilities – Institute of Technology Tralee and Solas. Tralee, with a population of 24,000 people, is the capital town of County Kerry, world renowned as the home of the Rose of Tralee Festival and at the centre of Ireland’s most important tourism county.
If you are thinking of changing your car this month it’s worth checking out Tralee Credit Union low rate motor loan. Tralee Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin have just reduced their Motor Loan Rate to their lowest rate ever of 6.5% (6.7% APR). This low rate is available on all new, second hand, personal and commercial vehicles. Speaking to Fintan Ryan CEO “ we have reduced our motor loan rate this summer to meet the increasing demand for low rate motor loans. It’s not just the rate that is important its’ the flexibility of purchase as well. Remember with a Credit Union Loan you own the vehicle straight away. There are no fees, no balloon payments, no mileage/wear and tear restrictions and you can clear your loan early or make extra repayments with no penalty. We even offer free Loan Protection Insurance. Many garages are now promoting PCP (Personal Contract Plan) as a way of getting your new car. While PCP may have some things going for it, there are also pitfalls that buyers should aware of 1)You are not buying a car. You are actually renting it. 2) You are using your existing car as a deposit for your first PCP but you will not have a car to trade in next time. 3) There are mileage restrictions and other “fair use” conditions. 4) You will have to enter into a purchase arrangement at the end of the term to “buy” the car you have been driving for three years. 4) PCPs may be “sold” as interest free finance but in fact you are only renting, not buying the vehicle. We would ask you to be fully informed and choose a deal that’s right for you.

Swing4Cancer raises over €21,000 for Breast Cancer Ireland
Swing4Cancer finished in style Saturday evening at 10pm in Castlemartyr Golf Club, Cork after an adventurous idea became reality for three Pink Swingers. Michael Sheehan from Glanworth in Cork, Eoin Landers from Cappoquin in Waterford and DJ Geaney from Castleisland in Kerry travelled 1,800km over June 19th and 20th to play 32 holes of golf in 32 courses in the 32 counties of Ireland raising over €21,000 so far for Breast Cancer Ireland. The three friends organised this event in memory of DJ’s mother, Nora Geaney, who passed away in 2011 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Cappoquin man Eoin Landers said “on the drive from Dungarvan to our last hole in Castlemartyr there was certainly a few nerves knowing it was coming to an end. As we were escorted to the last hole we saw over 60 people walking up the fairway to welcome us home – it was unbelievable! DJ’s dad Paul was the first to make it to the tee box and to see how much it meant to him and the rest of DJ’s family was something special”.

WORK PLACE RELATIONS ACT 2015 Changes to the annual leave entitlements for employees on long term sick leave. On the 20th May 2015 the Work Place Relations Act 2015 (the “Act”) was enacted. One change of the Act is the right to accrue annual leave for employees on long term sick leave. In practical sense, this means that employees who are on long term leave due to illness will now be entitled to accrue their annual leave entitlement. This will result in employers facing payment for not only public holiday but also annual leave entitlements despite the absence of the employee. The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, provides for a minimum of twenty days paid holidays per year for a full time employee. Prior to the Act 2015, if an employee was out of work due to illness she or he would not be entitled to paid annual leave entitlements upon return to work or termination of their employment. However, section 86 of the Act amends the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. Such an employee will be entitled to additional paid time off to account for their annual leave accrual or in the event of termination of employment, the employee would be entitled to payment in lieu of the accrued annual leave. The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 requires an employer to ensure that the employee takes their annual leave entitlement within the year which it relates or with the consent of the employee this can be extended for a six month period after the end of that leave year. While this provision remains it has been amended in the case of employees on sick leave. The Act allows for such employees who are unable to take all or any part of their annual leave during that leave year or for the subsequent six months, then the leave year may be extended for a period of 15 months after the end of that leave year. This is a significant extension of time. If you require more information on this new Act, please do not hesitate to contact one of our HR Advisors on 066 7102887.

11 WAYS TO GET ‘BAILED’ OUT ON SOCIAL MEDIA My mission is to improve small businesses reach on Social Media, and to enable them to reach more customers. So here are some simple tips that you can organise today to improve your marketing reach using Social Media:
1. Look at What’s Working Already Do an audit of what has worked in the past 12months on your existing Social Media, and identify why it worked. 2. Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail Create an easy to follow Social Media Strategy – A ‘marketing plan’ for the next 12months that will set out how you are going to be successful on Social Media 3. Make Friends Connect with other businesses who are in the same boat as you, and help each other by sharing content and promoting each other’s businesses. 4. Make Contact with Existing Followers Engage with your existing fan-base and ask them, what they like about your business, and what they would like to see you posting on your Social Media platforms 5. Improve Your Website Every business, no matter what you do, must have a website that represents their business, it must be mobile friendly and must be linked to their Social Media presence. 6. Respond, Respond, Respond Find every comment, review or post about your business on Social Media in the past 2 months and respond now. Make sure you apologise for not responding sooner! 7. Get Help if You Need It If you are struggling to get to grips with Social Media, then get help 8. Get on the Right Platforms Stop wasting your time on the wrong Social Media sites. Make sure you know which ones best suit your business. 9. Stop Making Mistakes Do you know what mistakes you’ve made in the past on Social Media. Make a list of where you’ve gone wrong before so you know not to do it again! 10. Know Your Audience! Stop wasting time and money targeting everyone with your ads, tweets and posts – Know who your market is, and direct your attention to them. 11. Create A Calender Plan out your year ahead, identify what’s an important time for your business, and plan ahead for those key moments. MOMENTS IN SPORT In sport National titles don’t come along that often and even rarer is the chance to win a National competition that no other person in Kerry has won. That is what happened on June 12th when the Kerry 14 Boys soccer team won the Kennedy Cup for the first time ever. Alongside Tom Kelly, Padraig McCannon, Danny Diggins and Tadgh Healy the manager Brendan Hogan said that this was a huge team effort and very gratifying for all the work that everyone put in.
“We had a wonderful squad of players who were soccer smart beyond their years. They knew that the hard work and sacrifices they made over the last four years would give them the best opportunity to create Kerry sporting history. In the Tournament that takes place annually in UL we played and won 6 games, conceded 1 goal and scored 13 and survived a 28 penalty shoot-out. “We also had a very strong back-up staff led by Sports Massuse John Kerley and this paid off as our players were as fresh for the final against perennial winners the Dublin DSL. “The week was trouble free and every player did exactly what we asked them to do and to bring the trophy back to Kerry for the first time ever is a wonderful feeling”.
Hogan was born in the shadows of West Ham’s ground in London and so soccer was always going to play a big part in his life. He worked in coaching in the game in England before moving to North Kerry with his wife Bridgette and son Conor. He now runs the Foundation Sports a company that provides sports programmes to schools, after school and clubs and had recently launched Move-It, which aims to work to combat childhood obesity.
THE QUICK FIRE SECTION: What is you earliest sporting memory? I was at West Ham v Wolves in 1973 and it was a mucky, dirty day. I was close to the tunnel and Wolves came out in the same strip as the first half. West Ham had changed into pristine new clean jerseys and I became a lifelong fan at the moment. If they were that particular then I wanted to follow them. Best sporting moment in your own sport? Obviously it’s winning the Kennedy Cup earlier this month and creating Kerry soccer history at the same time. It was a wonderful group effort between the players, staff and management and like they say – It’s wonderful when a plan comes together! Best sporting moment outside of your own sport? I love watching top class rugby and so it must be cheering on Ireland to winning the Triple Crown, especially back in the 80’s when we had a wonderful team. What in life gets you excited? Having the chance to work with young players and shape their development. In my role as Emerging Talent Coordinator for the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League I oversee the work the League is doing at county level from 11’s to 16’s. There is a huge sense of pride when
32

a player that came in raw to you as an 11 year old becomes a top quality player. I have worked with many who have gone on to have careers in the game. What in life upsets you? People who are more interested in bringing politics into sport, rather than working to improve the sport itself. Of course Committees are very important and nothing would be done without a structure but some members of committees are on them for their own ends and these will always stifle progress.
their players to do anything else? Finally 4 persons, dead or alive that you would invite to your dinner party? Firstly I would bring in caterers and give my wife the night off. She is a wonderful cook but I would treat her. Next would be Trevor Brooking who is my sporting icon, Nelson Mandela who I greatly admire and finally Jack Charlton which should make for some interesting chat around the table.
Noise or Sound that excites you? The final whistle – but only when you are winning!! The sound of a full stadium pulsating with passionate fans is something wonderful to be part of. I was at the Scotland game in the Aviva recently and it was one of the best nights in the new stadium. Noise of Sound that annoys you? It must be either people who think they know better than the coach on the side line and spends the game duration roaring things at the young player. This gives the child a set of mixed messages and confuses them. Also we see too many negative comments from the side lines and indeed some coaches must take responsibility for themselves in this aspect of the game. If a coach roars and shouts and roars at the officials how can he/she expect

Need to do Home Improvements this Summer? Then consider the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme! As summer finally descends, it is an ideal opportunity to carry out much needed repairs, renovations or improvements to our homes (excludes new builds). What Tax Relief is available? Tax relief is available for expenditure between €5,000(Incl. VAT) and €34,050(Incl. VAT) provided your builder is HRI registered. Tax Relief is 13.5% of expenditure, essentially between €595(€5000) and €4,050 (€34,050). How is Tax Relief Claimed: Tax relief is spread over the two years after the works are paid for i.e. 50% Year 1 and 50% Year 2. Do Rental Properties Qualify? Finance Act 2014 extended HRI Scheme to rental properties so landlords can claim for works carried out on their rental properties. John’s Advice: • This particular Tax relief may end 31st December 2015, so now is an opportune time to carry out more expensive works that you may have been putting off! • Talk to your builder, as most will fill out details online so you can claim this tax credit. NB: You won’t be entitled to HRI tax credit unless your builder is HRI registered and information is completed online!

What is Fertility Massage Therapy? Fertility Massage Therapy is a deep; yet gentle, non-invasive therapy that works by bringing the organs within the abdominal area back into alignment, releasing pressure and strengthening the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This in turn will improve blood, nerve and lymph flow. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. The massage also focuses on breaking down scar tissue, helping to loosen harden debris (that has been accumulating in your gut for years) encouraging a natural movement and clearing both physical and emotional congestion, leaving you and your abdomen feeling lighter and freer.
Why Focus on Reproductive, Digestive & Lower Back? Our abdominal cavity is serviced by the same neural pathways, connecting the organs, muscles and connective tissue of the reproductive and digestive systems along with the lower back muscles. If one organ or muscle is misaligned, blocked or damaged by scar tissue – all the others will be disrupted, and can, in turn, send the whole body into disarray. It is important to note that 80% of our immune system lives within our digestive tract. Immunity, digestion and fertility are closely linked. Therefore it is important to massage and treat the whole torso area, aiming to achieve homeostasis. For further information on the benefits of fertility massage and what to expect during a treatment, contact me.

CONNECT Motoring There are 3 trim levels available – Style, Zetec and Titanium – and engine options include a 1.6TDCi and 2.0TDci diesels along with a 1.5 Ecoboost petrol option. The new Ford Mondeo starts at €27,645 and now comes with a 5 year warranty. While I’ve driven the diesel versions at both the European and Irish launches the model tested in Kerry was a 1.5 Petrol Ecoboost Titanium with 160bhp that also had optional leather, panoramic roof, winter pack and body kit costing €39,615. For more information visit www.ford.ie After a 3 year wait due to the relocation of production from Belgium to Spain the new Ford Mondeo has arrived to take the D segment by storm. The redesigned Mondeo has the look of an Aston Martin up front with chunky and sleek styling all round and it is currently available both as a hatchback and estate. A saloon model has also been designed for a special hybrid version which should be available later this year. On the road is where the Mondeo really starts to shine – it has always been a driver’s car and this new incarnation is no different. Once behind the wheel you’ll feel as if you’re part of the car with an excellent seating position and very precise handling. On the motorway it’s comfortable but on winding roads the new suspension design really shines through and it feels sporty and fun. Inside the cabin there is plenty of space and the addition of extra sound insulation blocks out tyre and wind noise. The interior finish may not have the premium feel of competitors but if you love to drive the Mondeo should be your first choice.
