EDITOR NOTE Well that’s it for another year the Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards were a great
success and lots of wonderful ladies in business all over the county attended and had a super night with family and friends. Congratulations to the overall winners and continued success to them and indeed to all the finalists who were all winners just to be part of it. Business is good in the county and it was evident in the room on the night. We have so many pictures from the night we just couldn’t include them all so log on to our website www.connectpublications.ie for lots more photos. We also chat with the very entertaining Crystal Swing fresh from their performance at the Radio Kerry All Irish Music Show. They are great fun and lovely to chat with. We also met up with Vera O Leary of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre now providing 25 years of service. Listowel Chef Lizzy Lyons is the new Flogas Ambassador and we also have some advice and tips on upgrading your car during the second half of the year and getting your 172 plate but we also include some general tips on motoring. Dining out in the summer months is extremely popular so we check out where it’s happening and what we would recommend. School is out and this usually means lots of stressed out parents planning childcare for the next two months. Just remember, if you can at all make a little time for them, it can be difficult to do this but they need some time too, work will still be there, kids grow up, and they usually grow up way too fast, so make some lasting memories over the next few weeks that will last forever. Have fun. Until next month

YouTube Sensation
Crystal Swing talks to Connect
Crystal Swing is made up of mother, daughter and son trio Mary, Derek and Dervla Burke, since becoming a YouTube sensation in 2010 with the video of their song ‘He Drinks Tequila’ they have reached international levels on the stage and the band has also had major appearances on local and national media here in Ireland. They have played Kerry many times and now that they have just performed recently at the Radio Kerry All Irish Music Show we thought it was time to have a chat and find out what they get up to when they are not entertaining audiences worldwide. We chat with ‘Mammy Mary’ to get more insight into it all. Mary tell us a little bit about where it all began, your love for music and handing it down to your children obviously led to the formation of Crystal Swing? My life has been filled with wonderful people who have encouraged and helped me through my journey in life. My mother and father made everyone feel welcome in our home and the kettle was always on the boil. I have to thank my late mother in particular for the legacy of music which I inherited from her. All of her family loved to sing and dance. The sing-songs and dances around the kitchen bring back many happy childhood memories to me. My uncle and his musical friends called on a regular basis armed with accordions and an impromptu party instantaneously followed into the early hours of the morning. These were the seeds that planted a love of music and people in me. This love of music was passed on to Derek and Dervla. Their musical abilities were very evident from an early age. When Derek was a toddler, I used to watch him dancing in front of a mirror to The Hucklebuck. At nine years old, he took a few lessons on the guitar and within a short while he 4 | Connect Kerry | July 2017
became the life and soul of every party. Derek and Dervla grew up listening to the songs that I was singing. Both of them loved performing and their dream even at that young age was to pursue a career in the music business. On occasion, if we couldn’t get a babysitter I brought them out with me to the gigs. They seized the opportunity to go on the stage and sing a few songs. They were an instant hit with the audiences, so much so that the venue holders asked me to bring them back again. Many concerts wanted them as special guests. Derek was a born entertainer and Dervla had a natural, beautiful voice from a very early age. I knew at this stage that they both had something special as they were winning awards at local adult song contests and they had a confidence way beyond their young years. I was determined to encourage them to follow their dream and do everything I could to support them. In 2010, our lives changed dramatically when our video ‘He Drinks Tequila’ went viral on YouTube and social media. This explosion brought national and world media attention upon us. Since then, we’ve had amazing experiences including appearing on numerous TV and radio shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show in Hollywood. Every day, I thank God for all the wonderful graces he has bestowed on our lives and for the inspirational people we’ve met along the way. Derek how do you find it being in the band with your mum and your sister? I’m very lucky to have a great family and we all get on very well. I’m very proud to perform with my mother and sister. My mam has been the driving force behind us and she always has

our best interests at heart. The fact we were so young when the whole thing broke for us, both Dervla and myself felt safe with our parents being there. Dervla and myself are best friends and we have a unique bond between us. Dervla you’ve recently become a mum yourself has this changed your outlook on life? Having our little baby boy has changed our lives for the better. He has brought so much joy to my husband and myself and our families. His presence in our lives makes us want to be good role-models for him. I thank God that he’s healthy and thriving. It’s made me realise that family is what’s most important. Ireland is renowned for showband shows and that style of entertainment. Have you travelled abroad to do shows and did you find this opens many doors for you? Since we’ve had our break, numerous doors have opened up for us. We’ve performed on the large stage in major theatres and elegant venues in Ireland, the UK, the USA, Europe and other countries. We’ve had the honour of meeting and performing with the biggest names in the business including Bonnie Tyler and Lily Allen. Also, we’ve had the great privilege of working with great singers and top class musicians. I would like to pay tribute to their talent and professionalism. We’ve performed on many musical holidays abroad including Spain, Portugal, Dubai and the Caribbean. Obviously you did Mary but Dervla and Derek will you encourage your own kids to partake in the entertainment world? DERVLA: Yes, I hope that my little boy will be musical but I won’t push him into it if it’s not for him. His dad loves sport so he might follow in his footsteps. Already, he loves listening to music and I’m always singing to him. DEREK: If I have children, I would love them to be musical. I’d encourage them in every way. Music is a gift which I love. I’m getting married in August 2018 so please God, we will be blessed

with a family down the line. What do you all do away from Crystal Swing to chill and wind down from it all? When we return home after touring, we all do our own thing. We all respect each others privacy and enjoy our personal space. Derek loves to meet up with his girl friend. He loves vintage tractors and enjoys going on the charity tractor runs. Dervla’s priority is spending quality time with her little baby Paul and her husband Tim. I have a very deep faith so I very much enjoy going to Knock, Medjugorje and the other places of pilgrimages. I’m blessed with a wonderful husband, Mike who’s always there to help us all. Where to next for Crystal Swing? We’re continuing to tour extensively and we have plans to bring out a new song at the end of this year. Derek is getting married next year so we’re all very excited about that.

Benners
Hotel has once again
been reinstated as the Grand Dame of Castle Street and she is certainly revelling in the last two years since the popular O’Sullivan clan purchased her. Adding wonderfully to the hustle and bustle of Castle Street, Benners Hotel is fast becoming the number one eatery in Tralee. Always improving the standards and ensuring that customers receive great food, value for money and top class service, the hotel is constantly evolving to keep the customer happy. The O’Sullivans refurbished the bar and restaurant and it was open for business but there is still so much going on behind doors with improvements and standards being raised daily. Manager in July 2016. Having worked in the PR and hospitality areas for many years she brought a wealth of experience to the business. Orlagh ensures that every person who comes through the doors of Benners Hotel receives top class service. Her warmth and attention to detail is what sets her above the rest. Recently Benners added the Garden Terrace as a venue to cater for small parties while bringing a new dining experience to Tralee. The quirky use of space with an astro turf finish on the floor adds a continental feel and it is a haven for those who enjoy the sunshine. Benners can cater for private functions up to 500 people and has become immensely popular for barbecues and day after wedding celebrations. Located in the centre of town the outside courtyard area is one of the few places that customers can dine al-fresco when the sun shines.

A new addition to the kitchen is Chef William William Fitzgerald. Will who hails from Fitzgerald Tralee, grew up in the wine business (his father was Edmund Fitzgerald of John Fitzgerald & Sons Ltd.) He had a love for the culinary profession and wanted to join both professions so he made the decision to qualify as chef, whilst still at school he did his training at what is now the GMIT in Galway and worked in many a kitchen gaining invaluable experience on the ground. He went on to achieve the finest culinary experience under his belt starting with the “1st Poet Laureate of Irish Cuisine” with Gerry Galvin of Drimcong House (a man way ahead of his time). A move to London was in his head and no better place to start than the SAS of kitchens Harveys under Marco Pierre White. From here he moved to the White’s Gentleman’s Club to work for Shaun Thompson. And then onto Bryan Webb’s auspicious Hilaire, then on to the Savoy Grill and stints with Anton Mossiman (including a 10 day trip to Prague to cook for Prince Charles and most of the European Heads of State at the time). Brighton was next port for this unstoppable culinary expert and he achieved 2 AA Rosettes within 6 months and won the Restaurant of the Year in Brighton at the Sussex Arts Club. The lure of taking over Fitzers at the RDS was too strong and he returned to Ireland and put the RDS on the culinary map. Within 6 months he took control of the running of all the Fitzer’s outlets in Dublin, especially supervising State Banquets at the National Gallery. After 4 years it was time to move on and he became involved in the setting up of the Morrison Hotel. From Dublin to Kilkenny to oversee the setting up of the 4 * Ormonde Hotel. After 5 years the lure of opening his own business proved too much and with his wife Kerry, they opened Blueberry Deli in Kilkenny, after 6 years in business the recession proved too much. A move to Killarney was next and a new start in the Malton Hotel. Will was also a big competition chef and over the years and has won Gold and Silver many times at Hotelympia, Chef Ireland and Salon Cullinaire. He was a finalist in the Roux Scholarship and a semi-finalist the following year. Will was also part of the Irish Team that won the Worlds Banqueting Competition in Wisby in Sweden. He is an avid book collector and loves to forage around Killarney, Castlegregory & Dingle. Now based in Benners he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this kitchen and we guarantee your visit to sample his culinary skills will have you wanting to go back for more.

----------------------------Friday’s are a day for treating yourself after a long week and last RECOMMENDS Friday we certainly enjoyed a treat .... Lunch at Johnny Franks Bar, in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee. Upon entering the bar, you are greeted with a beautifully decorated interior, which is overlooked by a lovely mezzanine level library, it was so homely and welcoming right from the beginning. There is an extensive menu to choose from, offering something for everyone’s tastes. I choose supreme of chicken, which was accompanied by lovely fresh seasonal vegetables, stuffing, a lovely sauce and of course a few fries on the side (well it was Friday!). The portion size was absolutely perfect & overall it was truly delicious. Dessert was an absolutely to die for, malteesers cheesecake, such a nice treat on a Friday afternoon, the plate was completely empty returing to the kitchen! My companion choose Lasagne for mains and for dessert she choose a fresh berry Roulade, both of which she said were absolutely delicious. We were able to have a lovely relaxing afternoon chat in such nice surroundings. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and couldn’t do enough for us. Although we didn’t have the weather for it on the day, I also saw a lovely outdoor area where you could enjoy a meal or drinks al fresco, bring on the sunshine for that! I’ve since heard that the food & beverage team in Johnny Frank’s Bar have recently received a Certificate of Excellence Award from Trip Advisor which I can only say is well & truly deserved, I will definitely be returning!

When it comes to dining out there are many options, the tasty lunch, afternoon tea, early bird and the reliable Fine Dining option, so no excuse, something for everyone. Many establishments now include a healthy option for those following a healthy eating plan. We took a trip around in the sunshine of the last few days to see what was available. The Brogue Inn at the bottom of the rock in Tralee of course is always a favourite stop of mine, guaranteed good food, great atmosphere and amazing staff, serving from early morning breakfast to lunch and dinner. I particularly like the Rock Menu, great selection to choose from and just €18.95 for two courses. Ristorante Uno Ivy terrace Tralee is another favourite - lot of delicious dishes and bring your own wine option, is always welcome if dining before payday... The Station House just outside Tralee in the scenic village of Blennerville serves delicious lunch, gourmet sandwiches and evening meals, it’s the ideal stop on route to or from Dingle. Looking for afternoon tea.... The Rose Hotel, check out the elegant Rose Room where executive chef Odran Lucey and head chef Jason Fabian and their teams get most creative. An intimate, exclusive restaurant, perfect for those moments you want to celebrate, The Rose Room is also where you can enjoy afternoon tea at The Rose Hotel – always a treat in these graceful surroundings.

-----------------------------------------------------Evening dining can be tricky, getting the right menu teamed with atmosphere and value, we found Croi in the heart of Tralee has all that, delicious steaks, tempting seafood, chicken and vegetarian options all catered for. Croi sources all local produce so will guarantee you a dining experience you won’t forget. We would recommend the Fillet Steak Café de Paris, the flavour locked in to the preparation of this dish comes through in the final dish, so put it on your to do list to try it out sooner rather than later.

tantalising dishes on the menu and extremely friendly staff it’s a tough choice on what to go for, my only suggestion for this venue would be go back for more.
If you’re taking a trip to Killarney it’s got to be the Killarney Park Hotel. Served from 1pm - 5pm, it is the perfect way to take a little time away from the hectic pace of life and enjoy a tradition that both guests and locals have come to treasure. Retreat to the elegant Drawing Room with its tremendous marble fireplace, deep carpets, and graceful furnishings. Cosy up in one of the Lobby’s enticing nooks, where comfy sofas, gentle lighting, and a glowing fire will make you feel instantly at ease. Or take Tea in the Library, which offers an appealing escape from busy schedules, where inviting armchairs, serene lighting, and walls lined with a fascinating selection of books, hint at a more tranquil side of life, enjoy award-winning tiered array of delicacies. Savour a selection of finger sandwiches, each one a delectable combination of flavours on freshly baked bread. Discover what a properly baked scone should really taste like, complete with cream and fruit preserves. Take your pick from the sumptuous selection of home-baked cakes and pastries while catching up with old friends. You don’t have to take traditional Tea with your Afternoon Tea, either: a glass of Champagne adds a little extra sparkle to an already glowing occasion at one of the finest. Benners Hotel Tralee now launching the new summer menu, again the ideal stop for all your food requirements, the tasty healthy options on the lunch menu will have you eating guilt free, while our special choice was the hot and cold seafood platter from the dinner menu. It’s got such a selection of fish (hot and cold) served with rice and chips there really is something for everyone on this platter. Boat House Bistro Kenmare definitely one for the diary to visit during the summer. On my visit recently the sun was shining so a coffee on the spacious terrace was just what was needed to top up the vitamin d supply, with a range of 22 | Connect Kerry | July 2017

Ashe Hotel, Tralee. When invited here to try the new menu I have RECOMMENDS to say I was looking forward to the trip as I had heard many good reports on the selection and presentation of the food. On arrival it certainly didn’t disappoint, we browsed through the menu to choose. I opted for an all seafood starting with the seafood chowder while choosing the fish and chips for main course. What I particularly liked about this was the presentation, it was served with the usual peas and tartar sauce but with the little addition of a curry sauce boat to add extra flavour. Himself choose the half roast chicken and chips which again were full of flavour and based on the plate going back to the kitchen it was enjoyed and devoured to the bone. I decided to go the healthy dessert option with the ‘slimming world strawberry Eton mess’, it was amazing, and certainly not what you would expect to eat as a healthy option. Our meal was complimented with delicious wines and completed with cappuccinos. The staff were outstanding and you really couldn’t pick one member of staff over the other, each one was so pleasant and genuinely seemed to be enjoying the buzz of working there which would certainly entice one to go back there again. While it is a relatively new addition to the town of Tralee in terms of eateries I would definitely recommend putting it on the list to check out.
-----------------------------------------------------There you have just a few we sampled on our trip around this month, and it’s only a sample, we are spoiled for choice here in Kerry so get out there and get sampling for yourself this sunny season, you won’t be disappointed. ------------------------------------------------------

I look forward to developing our collaboration in the coming years.” Lizzy’s passion for food and cooking began at an early age and, while her friends were counting their confirmation money, Lizzy was in the electrical store investing in her first Kenwood mixer. She studied hotel management in Cork Institute of Technology and after graduating moved to London and worked in the hospitality industry. The last position she held in London was catering manager with Universal Music and she attributes her passion for 26 | Connect Kerry | July 2017

It was always her dream to open her own restaurant and her summer 2015 Ballybunion Pop Up was her first step in the right direction. Such was its success it remained a permanent fixture during the 2015/2016 off season and earned her a place in John & Sally McKenna’s “Where to Eat and Stay on the Wild Atlantic Way” as well as a best newcomer nomination at the RAI Irish Restaurant Awards. Earlier this year she launched a series of tapas supper events in her flagship cafe which book up in record time. Lizzy likes to cook a little differently with her ethos based on hearty, healthy, feel good food. Her dishes are renowned for their nutritious, tasty and affordable attributes using locally sourced ingredients. Her menu is concise and includes a comforting seafood chowder as well as a diverse range of invigorating zesty salads. Night Out Style by Zoe O’Connor
Hello everyone, This month, I am lucky enough to be guest editing Connect’s fashion column so that I can sprinkle a bit of millennial fashion wisdom upon you all!
hearing (and that some parents may be very happy that I included!) My general rule for any outfit that I put together is that it can either be low cut OR it can be short. I tend not to do both, as you can very easily look trashy, or worse, you will just spend your entire night worrying about it!
I think that teenage ‘night out’ style has always been very much a ‘grey area’. It’s a constant battle to try to strike a balance between what you want to wear (perhaps because everyone else is wearing something similar) and what your mother will let you out of the house in! Sometimes my skirt length has raised a few eyebrows when I depart my house but usually a manage to tip-toe along that line quite safely… Right Mom?
It is important to remember that there is no need to spend a fortune on outfits purely ‘for going out’! I happily wear the same skirts over and over again, and just switch up the tops. Bodysuits are a god send as everyone thinks that you have spent a fortune on a new dress when really it’s just a switch up of what you wore last week! Or better still - myself and my friends just swap all of our clothes again and again; no splurges needed! Trade secrets revealed!
Personally, as you may be able to tell from the pictures of some of my fashion exploits, that I have a preference for head to toe black ensembles. This probably stems from the fact that all teens, particularly teenage girls, have a tendency to want to blend in. I am definitely no different! More recently, many of us have all morphed into Kylie Jenner Clones shimmying across the dance floor. There’s nothing wrong with that but perhaps don’t try out her all in one mesh bodysuit… or at least wear pants with it!
The thing about tan… I have never gone down the Oompa Loompa Orange route. Some people can miraculously pull it off, but it’s the patchy hands that I can never grow accustomed to! If you do happen to get it all into the crevices of your hands - micellar water the job…
I am very much for body confidence and if you want to wear something, I don’t think it is really going to offend me all that much if you wear it! But, I guess I do have a few fashion ‘no no’s’ that you may be interested in

Hello Everyone,
Beauty Corner Hi Everyone,
I hope the summer is being good to you so far? I’ve got two short trips coming up this month to Venice and Berlin and I am beside myself with the excitement of it. Of course trying to think of what to pack is another story... One thing I will absolutely be wearing is my Lancome flash bronzer leg gel. This tan for the whole body never lets me down for a smooth, even and natural golden colour and is ideal for before holidays and for any other events that require the usually blinding white legs to make an appearance! I wore this recently to Punchestown and it looked gorgeous, although it never stopped raining all day so my efforts were wasted (Irish weather has no respect for all our preening). At least it didn’t streak or run in the rain however. For the best results with self tan always use a scrub preferably the day before to really exfoliate the skin as this will give a more even and flawless coverage and help prevent the dreaded streaks. If you are not using a tanning mitt (and I recommend you do), then be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after applying the leg gel, especially between the fingers as it dries quickly. I’d definitely recommend this tan if you are going to the races this month and I hope you have better weather than I did :) Have a great July and chat soon!

July is the month of weddings and of course, the racing season. An expensive month if you must buy new outfits for each event, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Just be creative and take a risk, pick up a discounted dress in one of the big stores and you can make it look a million dollars with the addition of the right accessories. Totally transform a look from ordinary to stunning, that of course without losing all your money before you ever go racing. In “That’s Perfect”, we have all the accessories you will need to enliven an outfit, from shawl to shoes to fascinator to clutch bag. Why don’t you call in to me to discuss the different options, I am only too glad to assist. While you may not qualify for best dressed lady, you will walk away with the smartest lady prize. Talk soon

Fáilte Romhaibh a cháirde, As dentists, we are often asked about mouth ulcers. These can be very painful and last several days. They can occur anywhere in the mouth. If they are caused by rough edges on dentures, the dentures can be filed down. However some patients get re-current ulcers. It is usually better to get a blood test done with your doctor to check if you are low in Iron or vitamin B. May ointment s and gels are available in the chemists to get some relief. Cold sores (Herpes simplex virus) often appear due to being exposed to sunshine and/or wind. A lip balm can protect the lips, Lysine and vitamin C tablets can also help, along with various ointments. Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist before starting tablets. Finally a word of warning to patients taking blood thinning drugs and using denture adhesive in excess. This can lead to bleeding in the body and therefore the denture adhesive should only be used sparingly. Denture wearing patients with dry mouth can reduce the need for denture adhesives by using artificial saliva products. These include sprays, gels, toothpastes, mouthwashes and lozenges. And as always remember to have your regular dental check up’s so that these issues can be identified at an early stage. Beir Bua agus Beannacht.

The Tyranny Of Beauty What is the best compliment you could get? Is it about your kindness, your sense of humour, your perseverance? If you’re a woman, the chances are that you will forego all of these happily just to be told that you are beautiful. Girls in particular are brought up to believe that being beautiful – physically conforming to a socially accepted standard of how one should look – is the most important thing about them. From day one, we say that little girls are beautiful, so pretty, gorgeous, etc. All we focus on is how they look. We put them into frilly dresses, flowery headbands and pretty shoes. Boys get dressed in clothes for activity, girls in clothes for being looked at. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with liking pretty things, but the constant focus on how we look can leave women with huge anxiety, constantly dieting and trying to fight off normal ageing, body hair, this feature or that feature being too big, too small, too droopy. It can become an exhausting, demoralizing battle with ourselves. It fuels a huge industry, and so it suits commercial interests to keep dangling unrealistic notions of beauty before us, so it’s important to become aware of the influences around us, how they create dissatisfaction about our bodies and push us into ever more intense efforts to look a particular way. The measure of a human being is not their external appearance. Continual agonizing over how we look detracts from our sense of worth and selfesteem. Our characters, our hearts and minds, these are what really matter.

25 YEARS
Providing Support 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre (KRSAC). In early 1992 a group of committed individuals opened the Centre to provide professional counselling, advocacy and support services to female and male survivors of sexual violence. This was the first time survivors of sexual abuse in Kerry had an opportunity to avail of a safe, compassionate counselling and support service. The Centre was and remains unique as we are the only specialised free professional service for sexual violence in Kerry. We asked Vera O Leary to tell us a little bit about the service and what they provide Vera - “We are committed to healing the hurt of rape and sexual abuse. Our aim is to offer a safe and confidential space where women and men of all ages can be listened to and supported without shame or self-blame. We provide experienced professional counselling and supports to anyone who has experienced any sexually abusive incident at any time in their lives. This could be a recent or past experience of sexual abuse.” Vera O’Leary, Manager of the Centre outlined that they are constantly evaluating service provision whilst engaging with survivors on how service levels can be augmented and improved. What support services do you provide? ‘Our main purpose is providing core services to female and male survivors of sexual violence. We are unique as our services are free and are provided by a team of highly qualified professionals. The services include, face to face counselling, helpline counselling, support groups, garda and court accompaniment, advocacy, crisis intervention & supplemental services for supporters & significant others. We also deliver prevention & awareness programmes to young people in schools, colleges & other youth settings. Research shows that there are positive impacts of accessing Rape Crisis Centre counselling and supports, not just on survivors, but also their families, friends and wider communities. Reported outcomes include better inter-personal relationships, ability to return to work or study and improved mental well- being and reduce or stop medication’. “We are passionate about ensuring that all the client’s needs are met so we develop the services that the clients tell us they need. It is very important for everyone involved in the Centre that the client’s voice is heard.” One such recent project was opening a support room in the local court house where any clients who had reported and are going through the legal process have a safe comfortable space to wait.

KRSAC continues to work with key partners such as TUSLA (Child & family Agency) who are also our main funders, HSE, RCNI,
Melissa Cournane (Staff), Trevor Noonan (COSC), Brid McElligott (Board of Directors), Bernie McCarthy (Staff) & Deputy Brian Hayes at the launch of a booklet for young people.
COSC as well as many national & local community groups. Cooperation with statutory and voluntary agencies connects our work to the wider community and is vital in fulfilling our mission in working towards a society free from Sexual Violence. A third of the centre’s budget comes from the donations and funds raised through fundraisers. I am struck by the energy and passion of these donors and by their recognition of the value of the work being done by the centre. We simply could not manage to continue the work without the generosity of the people of Kerry/ trusts, organisations and individuals who raise funds on our behalf. The Centre is a space where you hear different voices, the funders, board of directors, staff and volunteers who have helped the Centre grow over the past 25 years. The supporters, allies, organisations and the clients who use our services and share their stories. They have all shaped the Centre. Any major events planned to mark the 25th anniversary? ‘One of the events organised to celebrate our 25th is “The Chair Project”. The aim of this project which was undertaken by survivors of sexual abuse and facilitated by two experienced counsellors in the Centre is to raise awareness of the crime of sexual violence and to tackle the shame, secrecy and victim blaming, which often surrounds the crime of childhood sexual abuse & adult sexual violence. Silence can be one of the biggest barriers to recovery. The participants of ‘The Chair Project’ know this from firsthand experience. Their objective with the project was to dispel negativity and biased attitudes by confronting the public with their collection of vibrant and evocative chairs. The hope is to get conversations started regarding Sexual Abuse and recovery in Kerry. This project is being launched in the Centre in July where all the chairs and the stories behind each one will be showcased. We are so grateful to all the clients who over the years have trusted us with their stories, it is humbling to work with each and everyone of them and joyous to witness the healing and hope. In the words of a client- (“I will be forever grateful for all the support and counselling from the staff which helped me on my life’s journey and looking to the future”.) We continue to draw inspiration from the courage of all our clients. If you need to contact us our Helpline is 1800 633333 or call to the Centre at 5 Greenview Terrace, Tralee if you or someone you know is affected by sexual violence.

With the holiday season upon us we thought it appropriate to remind employers of their legal obligations around annual leave. The Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997 - 2015 sets out minimum entitlements to annual leave for all Employees. All Employees are entitled to annual leave on commencement of employment. The legislation sets out three methods which may be used to calculate an Employee’s statutory annual leave. Accrual of annual leave is based on actual working hours. However, time spent on annual leave, public holiday leave, maternity leave, adoptive leave, parental leave, jury service leave, and the first 13 weeks of carers leave must be treated as though the Employee was working their normal working hours. Since the 1st of August 2015 The Workplace Relations Act introduced that employees on certified sick leave accrue annual leave as if they were working as normal. An employee’s entitlement to carry over annual leave while on certified sick leave is subject to a 15 month carry over period after the leave year in question. However if the employee remains on certified sick leave, they will continue to accrue new annual leave entitlements. EMPLOYEES ANNUAL LEAVE ENTITLEMENTS ARE CALCULATED BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
1. 4 working weeks in a leave year in which the Employee works at least 1,365 hours 2. 1/3 of a working week per calendar month that the Employee works at least 117 hours. 3. 8% of the hours an Employee works in a leave year (but subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks) Some Organisations provide Employees with additional annual leave, in excess of the legal entitlement, these additional entitlements are at the discretion of the employer. Or if you’re a Hardware Store, why not get a local builder to broadcast some helpful DIY tips! Discovery – Take your followers somewhere they’ve never been. If you’re attending a Trade Show, Seminar or a Supplier’s business, then broad live. Giving your followers insight into the latest news or trends. ADVANTAGES OF UPGRADING YOUR CAR TO A SHINING NEW 2017 KY If the thought of cruising around Kerry in a gleaming new 2017 KY car appeals to your inner self, and not just your vanity, then read on. A new car has the advantage of being shiny, exciting and eye catching but there are lots more reasons to opt for a newer car. Is it time to ditch the 2011 or the 2014 model, a time for change and a time for a bright new beginning on the Kerry roads? A new 2017 car could lower your outgoings and provide greater safety and reliability. It may seem like a big expense but, in the long run, upgrading your car could save you money.
1. Lower Running Costs: This is very much dependent on how you use your car. A diesel car will more than likely give you better fuel economy, especially for long motorway journeys. Jon Quirk, head of editorial at autotrader.co.uk, has summed up the benefits of petrol and diesel cars, “If you’re the sort of driver that does a lot of shorter driving stints, a small, turbo-charged petrol engine would be a better bet. For longer distance runs, a diesel will still perform better.” So, for long journeys, a diesel car offers at least 57 MPG across the range, may be a good investment - as it could potentially save you hundreds of Euros a year in running costs. 2. Increased Reliability: With the development of technology and testing in cars, newer model cars are built to last. 3. Improved Safety Features: Newer car models are loaded with safety features such as ISOFIX child seat anchors and multiple airbags, as well as mechanical features such as Antilock Brake System (ABS), traction control and electronic stability control. 4. Range of Finance Offers Available: You may have paid for your last car with cash, or received a bank loan to fund the purchase, but many car manufacturers try to incentivise potential customers by offering 0% APR offers. Further to these offers, there is now a wide range of payment options. These include Personal Contract Purchase (PCP), Personal Contract Hire (PCH) and Hire Purchase (HP). Each of these finance arrangements has their pros and cons. 5. Longer Warranties: Most cars now have attractive warranties. These warranties usually have a capped mileage (typically 100,000) and some Terms and Conditions attached. These are confident statements from manufacturers, giving you extra piece of mind when purchasing a new car.
Happy Motoring ......and love your new car with a passion

SUMMER DRIVING HAZARDS TO AVOID Punctures: If your tyres are already damaged or they’re at the wrong pressure, the higher temperatures of summer will increase the risk of a blowout. Make sure you check tyres regularly – for condition and pressures – and increase pressures to suit extra loads, as advised in your handbook. Overheating: When driving in hot climates, high temperatures can aggravate cooling system problems. It’s important to check the coolant and cooling system regularly to avoid overheating. Glare: Dazzle from the sun causes lots of accidents but you can reduce the effect by keeping your windscreen nice and clean, and by replacing worn or damaged windscreen wipers. Driving Tired: If you feel tired, stop and take a short nap (up to 15 minutes) or drink two cups of strong coffee. Include a 20-minute break in journeys of more than 3 hours. On longer trips, take a break every couple of hours. Don’t drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal before driving Hayfever: If your hay fever is particularly bad, it’s best to get someone else to drive if you can. Also: Make sure any medication you’re taking doesn’t cause drowsiness. Close windows and air vents to reduce pollen grains in the car. Clean mats and carpets regularly to get rid of dust. Keep tissues close to hand. Wear sunglasses to block out bright sunlight. Loose chippings: Roads repaired with tar and loose chippings are a common sight in the summer but they can cause cracked headlamps and windscreens, and damage paintwork if you’re not careful. Stick to any temporary speed limit that’s been put in place and keep your distance from the car in front. Tractors/Farm Machinery: The driver of that slow-moving tractor in front of you may have a soundproofed cab or could be wearing ear protectors, so may not be able to hear approaching cars. Be aware that tractors only have to have brake or indicator lights if driving at night, so they may stop or turn suddenly and without warning in daylight hours. When you’re driving in the countryside: - Keep plenty of distance behind a tractor - Remember that a tractor may be longer than it appears – there could be a loader on the front - Before overtaking, make sure you have plenty of room to get past.
