EDITOR NOTE Hi everyone. Well is this not the best month of the year in Kerry? We love August as the county is full of Festivals for all the family all month long. We got to meet the new owners of The Rose Hotel, this was a lovely day with two lovely people, who shared their story with us, telling us stories of their life in America, family life and

their arrival in Tralee. We also have all the news from the ever popular puck fair, a great family event always, and we have taken a trip around south Kerry, a trip we in Connect would strongly advise as there is so much to see and do. Celia Holman Lee tells us about her connection with the Rose of Tralee and of course her love for fashion, while Kerry Rose Danielle tells us about her preparations for the big week ahead.

We have some great competitions with lots to be won so keep an eye through the pages for these, as well as some lovely recipes and cooking advice, lots to see and do for everyone. Check out our new group on facebook, Connect Kerry Business where we have lots of fantastic give-aways each week. Enjoy the last of the summer holidays. Until next month

THE NEWLY LAUNCHED ROSE HOTEL PREPARES TO WELCOME THE ROSES T

his month we are delighted to meet with Dick and Eibhlín Henggeler, new owners of the recently refurbished Rose Hotel Tralee, in memory of their cherished daughter Dorothy whom they lost to an illness at the young age of 27 on April 3rd 2014. They tell us about their love for Kerry and new found friendships in Tralee, their daughter and her love for life and of course the exciting plans in place for the hotel.

dream job working for Tourism Ireland in America but Ireland was always home, she made friends very easy and always had a welcome smile for all who knew her, and indeed those who didn’t know her but crossed her path always came away feeling like they knew her all their life. She was sick for 5 months and passed away just before she was to reach her 28th birthday. She left a legacy that we still feel here today and we also feel she is writing the book of our life now’. One lovely memory Eibhlín recalls is while attending a funeral in her home town Killarney a young girl came up to her and said ‘ are you Dotts mum’ this was a huge shock to Eibhlín as it was her home town and to be referenced as ‘Dotts mum’ just showed how popular and well accepted Dorothy was here in Kerry.

You are both very welcome to Kerry, tell us a little bit about how the Rose Hotel became a reality for you both? Dick tells us ‘ Eibhlín with being born and raised in Kerry it was always a dream of ours to invest in Kerry, because the hospitality in Kerry is so positive that was always the way we were most likely going to go, we had obviously looked and examined properties in Killarney but when this hotel became available and with its links to the Rose of Tralee and ours too, we felt it was right for us, so last year we acquired it and we have invested a major refurbishment since, we have lots more plans for it but as with everything things take time.’

Eibhlín you are from Kerry you must be very proud to be welcoming everyone here to Kerry this August ‘I am thrilled and very proud I am from Kerry and while I don’t know that many people in Tralee it’s been a wonderful experience getting The Rose Hotel to where it is today. We would have travelled to Kerry down through the years and would have always passed Tralee by, I guess it was our wonderful daughter Dott that brought us to Tralee with her connection to the Rose of Tralee, and we have never looked back since. I am

4

so looking forward this year to welcoming all the extended Rose families from all over the world here to Tralee and to the Rose Hotel and we hope their stay will be memorable and that they will do what happens best at the Rose of Tralee Festival.. They will create many new friendships that will remain for a lifetime, and if we can be part of that and showcase Tralee and the county of Kerry to all those people we are delighted to do that. We love to go out and boast about Ireland it’s in your bloodstream to do that if you live away, Ireland is always in your heart and is your home and you just want to tell everyone you meet about Ireland and bring them home to get a taste of it’.

The hotel is dedicated to your wonderful daughter would you like to tell us a little about her? Dorothy was born following her sister Treasa (who passed away two and a half years previous

to Dorothy’s birth) she was a very special person, her name means ‘Gift of God’ Even as a little girl at Montessori school her teachers said she had something special she got a great sense of spirituality from one particular teacher, at the time we thought it wouldn’t last but it did, it was a trait she took with her through her whole life. She was passionate about life and family were very important to her, her Irish culture was extremely important to her and was dedicated to it immensely, she was so proud of her Irish roots and listened to Radio Kerry on her iPod all the time, she loved her trips to Kerry each year and connecting with her Irish family was the most important thing to her. She was a huge supporter of the Dr Crokes football team from a young age, she came to Ireland to socialise while her brother Franz came to discover Ireland. She spent many summers here in Ireland working in the hotel industry. She got her

The Rose Hotel (Fels Point) has been associated with the Roses for the past number of years but are you looking forward to welcoming the many tourists from all over the world to the newly named Rose Hotel? It must feel like bringing many people home for you? Yes indeed for those not involved in the festival it’s sometimes hard to understand the closeness that is there amongst the girls and the family and friends that come from far and near to support, we were lucky to have had that experience with Dorothy and now that we are here in the Rose Hotel and it’s the base of the festival we are able to share that experience with more families and let them live out that joy. There is a great sense of pride when your daughter is wearing the sash representing your country or county and we are forever indebted to Dorothy for affording us this opportunity. steps of the hotel is one of the most wonderful experiences to have, the emotion and excitement as they all arrive full of joy for the wonderful week ahead, and we are delighted to be here to welcome them.

You have done an amazing job in the hotel to date have you lots more plans? Yes we have come a long way in the last 12 months and it is now at the nice stage we can add touches to it, of course we have a lot more

to do because with a hotel of this size there is always something else to do. We are very fortunate that we have an excellent management team and a superb staff in all departments so that certainly makes the job easier. Our designer Kate Cronin has done an amazing job and was a pleasure to work with throughout the process and we are so lucky to have someone of that talent in our team. We are also looking at the next development which is the Dome, we are willing to support this but it’s going to be a

To continue the challenge… the challenge that is The Rose Hotel, keeping the standard the people expect of the place, to continue the feel of energy and excitement as you walk in the door, coupled with that we will continue to make trips back home to Baltimore as our son and his family live there so they are also a huge part of life for us, as every grandparent knows those little ones are the light of your life so we want to afford as much time to them as we can, those years fly by and it’s

so important to cherish and make memories that will last a lifetime. We would like to thank the people of Tralee for welcoming us here to The Rose Hotel and supporting us, and to our extended family here the staff, thank you all for your commitment and hard work, to help us carry on Dorothy’s dream every day,

ach year one of the highlights of our Rose of Tralee Calendar is the very popular Fashion Show; over 1500 ladies make their way to the dome to what is the first look at the autumn collections. Celia Holman Lee has been at the helm of this wonderful event for many years so this year we were delighted to catch up and get some memories from Celia on her trips to Kerry. Celia your part of the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show for many years can you tell us some of your memories from the years? For me the fondest memories are when I would walk out to the entrance of the dome on the night of the fashion show and I would see the ques and ques of

I am preaching this for 40 years, that you have got to know your body shape; you have got to look after your posture in order for your clothes to hang correctly. Your shoulders for me are one of the most important parts of your body, when it comes to your clothes looking their best on you. Have a bit of confidence in yourself when you are going shopping, but also it is good to find a favourite boutique you can trust to have your best interest at heart.

Winter show of the season in the country. The standing ovations year after year also stuck in my mind and the magnificent venue, which is the famous Dome that the Rose of Tralee committee provides each year. It’s the highlight of the fashion calendar in Kerry each year, why do you think it has remained the number one event to come to? As I mentioned it is the first Autumn Winter fashion show of the season and it features the top fashion houses and designers from all over Munster and beyond. As well as this, it is the most anticipated fashion event in Kerry as the Rose of Tralee festival gets bigger and better every year. For all the fashion conscious ladies in the audience, the showcase is the best platform to start planning their winter wardrobes. Your involved in the fashion industry for many years can you give the ladies attending the show some quick fashion tips on looking your best and still being comfortable in what you are wearing.

Do you love coming to Kerry and being part of the festival each year? I think my year would be so much duller if I didn’t have my annual trip to the Rose. I have been involved with the Rose of Tralee for many many years and have made many friends and colleagues along the way and it’s such a beautiful place to be in. Anything exciting coming up for the Holman Lee Empire that we can share with our readers? I am delighted to announce that my daughter Cecile and my daughter-in-law Asta will be joining the Holman Lee Agency as directors; both girls are very excited about the future plans and collaborations. I am also looking forward to the new season of TV 3 Ireland Am and RTE Today Show fashion slots, Brown Thomas style events, our annual fashion shows around the country, and style workshops on the road with Celia and the team. WELL HERE WE ARE AT THE START OF AUGUST AND THE LONG SUMMER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ARE NEARLY AT AN END AND NOT ONLY DOES THIS MONTH BRING A RUSH FOR SCHOOLBOOKS AND UNIFORMS BUT ALSO OUR OWN SUMMER FINALE, THE ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL.

It really is a festival that has something for everyone and depending on what you are attending you will need to plan your wardrobe to be festival ready! The first glamorous event to kick off the festival is the Rose ball. This is a very stylish night and while it is a black tie event, for ladies really anything goes. It is any style watchers idea of heaven as there is usually a beautiful array of full length evening dresses, cocktail dresses and well cut trousers and fabulous tops .I’m sure this year the must have jumpsuit will make an appearance ,but I’ll keep you informed Moving onto the major fashion event of the festival, The Rose of Tralee Fashion show. This really is a chance to shine as the coveted best dressed accolade is up for grabs. Be as creative as you dare but remember to dress comfortably and confidently and enjoy the wonderful fashion on display from Kerry’s designers and boutiques. Before we move away from the glamorous fashion side of the festival we must talk about dressing for the selection nights. If you are lucky enough to attend either supporting a rose or just to enjoy the night, don’t think to yourself that the lovely roses will be the only ones getting any attention as we have all watched at home and seen that camera zooming in on the audience also, so please dress to impress not just Daithi but the audience at home too, as you never know you could be making your T.V. debut! The festival is obviously a family themed event with plenty of activities focused around the kids. Now a lot of these activities are outdoor based so straight away you will probably need to layer up as our weather has been quite unpredictable again this summer. Cropped trousers or jeans, a nice casual top and jacket are just the thing to take you from the merries to dancing in the square. My wife always uses a messenger style handbag that goes over the body when we go anywhere with the kids as they not only have several hidden pockets, but fit in a load as in fairness everything always seems to get handed to poor mum to mind! Another major advantage to a messenger bag is that you are hands free. Well whatever way you choose to enjoy the festival I hope you all have a great time

Danielle gets ready

to represent Kerry

D

anielle O Sullivan is this years Kerry Rose, and so we met up with her at the Ballyroe Heights hotel where her dream of representing Kerry became a reality earlier this year. Hi Danielle, congratulations on becoming Kerry Rose, tell us a little bit about you? I’m 23, and I’m from the lovely town of Killarney. I graduated last year from the University of Limerick with a degree in Law Plus Economics, and I loved it so much there I decided to stay on

this year for my masters. I am currently completing my LLM in Human Rights Law & Criminal Justice. Human rights is a massive interest of mine, and when I qualify as a solicitor I hope to work in that area. My main area of interest is women’s rights and the rights of the victim, and I would love to work for the EU or the UN someday. Sports is a big part of my life, both playing and supporting. I’ve a huge love of all things GAA, and I played with my local club Killarney

10

Legion from a young age until I moved on to college. I also have a keen interest in martial arts, and began Tae Kwon Do at the age of 9. I then achieved black belt status at 17, and have successfully represented my club and county both nationally and internationally. The other big passion of mine is mental health campaigning. I believe that mental health is one of the biggest concerns that face the youth of Ireland, and it is necessary to break down the stigma and taboo that surrounds it. I am currently a member of the US Embassy’s National Youth Council, this is a council made up of young people from all around Ireland and we work on tackling issues that face young people. I’m the project leader for mental health, and we are devising a campaign to educate young people on the correlation between an unhealthy relationship (e.g. boyfriend/girlfriend, boyfriend/ boyfriend etc) and their mental health. This campaign will be in all the colleges in Ireland, and it will not only serve to educate but we will provide a support system for those that are affected. It’s a topic that is affecting so many young people but is largely ignored and we hope to change this. When I’m not studying and working my favourite thing to do is spend time with my family. I come from a very close knit family, my mother Dympna is

support I have received has been second to none, and it has made such a difference in helping me prepare as I have such a positive attitude which I feel is always so important. As well as that I’ve been trying my best to keep to a healthy diet, and taking my vitamins so that I’m in great shape for the hectic few weeks. I’ve also been sure to stick to my study regime so that I can have the majority of my thesis completed as it is due in September.

Did you enjoy the experience that led you to winning the title? Is it something you would recommend? The selection process for the Kerry Rose was easily one of the best experiences of my life. I met the most amazing group of girls from all over Kerry, and we had so much fun. From the very first day we all just clicked, and had the best laugh together. We had so many amazing experiences, we went to a night at the dogs in Tralee, and were treated so well. We also did Darkness into Light together which was simply magical, and afterwards we were treated to a day of pampering which was well appreciated. We Jonathan Collins - General Manager also had the added bonus of meeting Nathan Carter which What are you most looking for some of the girls was a dream forward to during festival week? come true. It probably sounds I don’t think I can even begin to cliché but we are still in contact describe how excited I am for and friends, and we meet up this year’s festival, being from when we can. It is very hard to Kerry I always look forward to describe the experience, but August but to be a part of it this whatever you are looking for year is just amazing. I cannot from the experience you will find wait to meet all the other roses it, whether that’s new friends, on the tour, I know that week confidence, or a lot of fun. I will be superb. But I think what would recommend it to anyone. I’m most looking forward to is arriving back in Tralee after The preparations for august the tour and seeing everyone, I begin now, how are you feel so grateful to be given the preparing yourself for it? opportunity to represent my The preparations for August county and I just hope I can do are well under way. I suppose everyone proud. being the fashion addict that I am one of the most important elements for me was my wardrobe, and I have been very lucky to receive some amazing sponsorship to help me on my journey to Tralee in terms of dresses, headpieces and accessories. BEAUTYCORNER NIGHT TIME TIPS FOR YOUR SKIN

We all know it’s important to prepare our skin for the rest period while we sleep but what’s good and what’s not? Here are some tips for you. What Dr.Hauschka recommends: Dr.Hauschka regimen allows the skin to carry out its important nights work. Balanced skin needs nothing more than cleansing , toning and an oil-free night care before bed. As your body slows upon evening’s approach, the crucial period of renewal and regeneration for your skin begins. Dr. Hauschka Night Serum supports the skin’s essential nightly processes and allows it to breathe freely, regenerate and revitalize. Before use of the Night Serum Dr. Hauschka recommends using the Renewing Night Conditioner. This is a water-based formula infused with rose essential oil and rhythmitised dilutions of dynamic plant extracts that supports renewal and balances oil production. Use it for 28 days, mirroring and supporting the skin’s natural cycle of regeneration to encourage a return to an even, radiant, balanced complexion.

NIMUE MULTI NIGHT PLUS

Multi night plus is another favorite here in Connect, it’s a nighttime skin rejuvenation treatment for those who don’t like the serum style its main focus is for the needs of damaged skin with dryness, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Some of the benefits we have found from just using it a few short weeks It improves your skins smoothness, making the skin freshness and plumpness while providing comfort and softness to your skin; it also reduces dryness and balances the moisture in your skin. It reinforces the skins natural protective layers and reduces depth of wrinkles it also improves the skins firmness giving you that healthy glow here all day long.. LANCOME ABSOLUE PRECIOUS CELLS REVITALIZING NIGHT RITUAL MASK

We all know the importance of a good night mask used regularly and here is one we thought was exceptionally good, Specially designed to revitalize the skin with freshness, this luxurious mask works overnight to pamper the skin. The formula is infused with a high concentration of shea butter, palm oil and corn oil, - and The Rose Essential Oil. Its fresh yet divinely velvety texture is effortlessly applied with the soft-touch massaging applicator for a smooth, indulgent ritual. Skin feels re-plumped, firmer and more luminous by morning.

Available at Ch. Chemist, Sam McCauley, McGuire’s Listowel

CONNECT FAVOURITE... This is our number one this month, having tried and tested it I felt my skin more relaxed, soft and younger. It’s a must for every skincare ritual, and it’s suitable for all skin types... Highly effective serum with marine collagen: your skin appears remodelled, with new contours – and thus looks years younger. Liver spots are visibly reduced, and your complexion looks smooth and radiantly, youthfully fresh. At the same time, lines and wrinkles are quickly and lastingly reduced, and your skin is lavished intensively with valuable, long-lasting moisture. Use evenings after cleansing. Apply under your usual skin care products. Turn the cap anti-clockwise (approx. ½ turn), the drop mechanism will rise to the top and the pipette will fill with the serum. We think the pipette is wonderful as you don’t use too much serum, Continue to twist the cap anti-clockwise to open the bottle. The serum is squeezed out of the pipette by applying pressure to the lid.

Hi All The festival season is well and truly here, with the big events in Killorglin, Killarney,Tralee and Listowel and other happenings around the county, reminding us, sunshine or no sunshine, it is time to dress up and have some fun. Some people find it difficult enough to find “something that is summery and dressy at the same time as many of the shops have already started the move into Autumn stock ( where has the year gone already). I may be able to suggest a not too expensive solution to this problem. Take a little time to go through your wardrobe, select an outfit that you haven’t worn in a while or maybe only wore once, now imagine how it would look if you were to change the style and colour of the accessories originally worn with it. You will be pleasantly surprised how much it looks like a whole new outfit. An example would be, if you have a cream/winter white dress, then there is such a range of colours you can wear with it. I have chosen here as as an example a simple pink wrap, teamed up with pink bag and a fascinator which has a combination of both colours. Then to finish a very pale gold wedge peep toe sandal (essence of comfort) If you have any such outfits in your wardrobe and would like some advice, Feel free to call in and bring the outfit with you. Until next month, enjoy all the up coming events

CONNECT Cooking WITH MARK DOE

MY FAVOURITE COOK BOOKS Just cooking I have a lot of cook books, in fact I have been collecting them since I was 16! So that is 30 years (I know I have given my age away!!!) I have books from all the well known chef’s and some from the not so well known. I have books from the Nouvelle cuisine era where is was acceptable to serve three pools of fruit coulis on a plate as a dessert and sell it for a huge price! “Practical cookery” is the book that all trainee chefs learn from when they study at college. and when you are learning is the bible, and still to this day I refer to it. The book is now on its 13th edition and has changed a lot since I got my first copy back in 1986!

The Fat duck and El Buli cook books, amazing stuff but you have to be a genius with some pretty expensive kit to pull of the recipes! The Naked chef is a book I love, as I do all of

It sits proudly on my book case in the cookery school amongst some of the best cookery books ever written. “White Heat” by Marco Pierre White was the book of my era as a young chef. Sharp photos of amazing food, pictures of Marco and his team in the kitchen and the fantastic Marco quotes. I would guess that most chefs own a copy of this, and if they don’t shame on them!!! “Larousse Gastronomique” is an encyclopedia of gastronomy, Mainly based on French cuisine. it was first published in 1938 and today is over 1,300 pages. It is a book I definitely used more than any other in my career.

So out of the few hundred books that I own, what is my favourite you ask? Well my Grandmother gave me a cook book called The “lots of thing have changed in the kitchen since you last brought a cookbook” Cookbook! Written in 1970 it has a collection of recipes that can only be called classics! Beef wellington, sherry trifle, baked alsaka, lamb chops reform!!! The list is endless. But what I love about the book is this lovely line on microwave ovens.

Jamie Oliver’s books. Jamie’s books would be the ones I use most when I look to entertain at home. Mrs Beetons everyday cookery is one of the oldest books I own, and is a fantastic piece of writing. I love the chapter on family meal planning. 4 and 5 course meals for the family! The book also includes chapters on household management,

Lizzy Lyons Lizzy’s Kitchen

Method • • • • • • • • • •

Roast red peppers by rubbing in olive oil, wrapping in foil and baking in the oven at 180 degrees for 40-45 mins until charred black. Finely dice 1 onion and mix with lamb mince, breadcrumbs, the egg, mint, feta cheese, salt and pepper. Moisten hands and roll into approx 1 inch balls. Add tablespoon of olive oil to a warm frying pan, add meatballs and brown on all sides. When meatballs are browned all over remove from pan and set aside on a plate. Add 1 finely diced onion and the garlic to the pan and cook gently until softened. Add the cans of tomatoes and ½ litre of water and let simmer for 5 mins. Remove red pepper from oven and take off skin. Add to food processor and blitz to paste. Then add to tomato sauce along with a dash of cream. The meatballs are returned to the pan at this stage and heated through. To make the couscous, add 250g of couscous to a flat heatproof bowl, season with salt pepper add 1 teaspoon of olive oil and pour over boiling water just above the line of the couscous. Cover well with cling film and set aside. After 8-10 minutes remove cling wrap from couscous and fluff with a fork or whisk. Add zest of lemon and extra mint.

Serve meatballs in a bowl with a side of mint and lemon couscous, you can crumble extra feta cheese and cracked black pepper on top.

HERE WE GOAT AGAIN

C

ome one, come all to this year’s Puck Fair as King Puck stakes not only his claim as monarch of Killorglin but also as the rightful ruler of the Wild Atlantic Way. Families, day-trippers, weekend revellers and visitors from far and wide are called to court to pay homage to the one true Irish King. With a lineage that traces back to ancient times, and with no rival in sight, this year’s King Puck commands all the territories, from where the land meets the sea to the rocky outcrops of the Kerry Mountains.

Way.’ Local girls Kerry Lynch aged 12 from Glounaguillagh National School, Caragh Lake has been named as the Queen of Puck Fair and Bláthnaid Carney from Killorglin as her ‘lady in waiting’. Her majesty will be honoured with the crowning of the goat king during the most popular celebration of the Fair. Prior to the coronation, the King and Queen will be paraded through the town in order to bestow the ‘Freedom of the Town’ upon all in attendance and the festival itself. This marks the beginning of three days of ceremony, merriment, celebration and music. The 2016 parade promises to be a kaleidoscope of colourful floats and entertainers. The route, which was changed last year, is designed to allow greater viewing opportunities and will begin at the Bridge and follow up through Lower Bridge Street, on to The Square and Upper Bridge Street and finally onto Iveragh Road.

Killorglin’s much loved Puck Fair, which runs annually from August 10th-12th, is undeniably one of quirkiest festivals in the world, as well as being Ireland’s original and oldest ‘Gathering Festival’. The pinnacle of the celebration surrounds the crowning of a wild mountain goat as the festival’s King which honours a tradition and heritage that is purported to be ancient, but can only officially be traced back to 1603 when King James I issued a charter granting legal status to the existing fair in Killorglin. This coronation ceremony traditionally takes place on the first evening of the festivities in collaboration with Fáilte Ireland. This year’s King Puck is also to be crowned ‘The King of the Wild Atlantic

Another popular event on opening day or ‘Gathering Day’ as it is known is the eagerly anticipated Horse Fair—Ireland’s oldest continually running horse fair. With an early start on the first day of Puck Fair’s festivities, the horse fair promises to be abuzz with equine wheeling and dealing, from donkeys, ponies and horses to saddles, bridles and more. This in itself is a spectacle to behold and a unique experience whether you are participating or simply soaking up the atmosphere. Following on from Wednesday’s commencement ceremonies, Thursday the 11th promises to be equally as fun filled and dynamic, chock-a-block with music and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The second day of Puck Fair is traditionally known as ‘Fair Day’ and the line up so far includes a number of free workshops for dance, circus skills and a drum & Irish pipe workshop. Throughout the day Kingdom Party Pals will be roaming the town as Ironman, Batman, and Frozen characters, as well as Mary Poppins & Bert stilt walkers at 1.30pm, and the Wobbly Rideabout around town at 4pm. The evening will pick up pace with DJ Donal from VideodjKerry, followed by Monsieur Gusto—A Fine Balance Act and more music then from Two Mikes & Family Ties, and country music sensation Mike Denver gracing the main stage

in a free open air concert which is sure to close the festivities for the night in a riveting fashion. Friday, the Final day of Puck Fair for another year, and known as ‘Scattering Day ‘ is action packed and particularly suited to families with a morning performance by ‘Hakuna Matata

Acrobats’, a free Afro Irish Drum Workshop and the annual Pet Show. In the middle of the day attendees are invited to Meet King and Queen Puck with the option of getting a picture taken with them. More music, street performances and kid’s activities fill the day until the always anticipated Firework display lights up the sky over Killorglin, a fitting way to bid farewell to Puck Fair, with a multi-coloured bang! here is nothing nicer than our own beautiful county in good weather. We took a trip recently to South Kerry which is an amazing part of the county. There are so many golden hotspots we are spoiled for choice. One the most famous and popular road circuits for tourists in the South West of Ireland, the Ring of Kerry, traverses the coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula, with a great many tourist sites along the way. Breath taking views, Majestic Mountain shapes, and little villages full of character are found along the winding route of the N70 through the southern tip of Kerry, known as the Ring of Kerry. The 179km route is much travelled especially by coach tours, but that doesn’t take away from the scenic beauty of the peninsula. Running anti-clockwise, as the coach tours do, the route starts with the characterful market town of Killorglin on the sloping banks by the River Laune with the mountainous MacGillycuddy’s Reeks in the near distance, Killorglin comes to life for the famed Puck Fair festival coming up very soon. The road skirts the gentle scenery of Caragh Lake, a haven

for fishermen, before coming to the small tourist town of Glenbeigh. Don’t pass this town without popping in to say hi to Marie and the team in The Olde Glenbeigh Hotel, they have a delicious menu with something to suit everyone, serving breakfasts and lunch or mouthwatering cakes, they have an amazing evening alacarte menu, definitely worth a stop on this route. The road then passes into Cahersiveen, overlooking Valencia Island and the birthplace of one of Ireland’s most eminent figures Daniel O’Connell. If stopping here make sure you call and see Bina and her team at the Kerry Coast Hotel, we stayed here and it was fantastic, the food is outstanding and excellent value, the hospitality is warm and friendly and you will definitely want to go back. From here the road passes through the resort town of Waterville and the world famous Waterville Links Golf Course, before coming to the picture postcard scene overlooking the coast of Derrynane, well worth a stop. We stopped off for an overnight here with Sharon and her team at the Sea lodge Hotel, wow what a treat... it’s a must on your list of staycations this year,

they offer an outstanding service, luxurious rooms with stunning views, good food and most of all extremely friendly staff, it is definitely one to take note of should you be looking to take an overnight in Waterville and don’t forget the Charlie Chaplin festival gets under way the end of august so make sure and put that in your diary. Just up the road O Carroll’s Cove is a lovely little area with a fun filled beach bar where Ray and the team are so welcoming, it would really make you want to come back for some more fun, stories are told, characters are at the bar giving you the local knowledge, no place better to spend a sunny Saturday evening in Ireland. Next to the colourful little town of Sneem set beside a fast flowing river and then on to Parknasilla, a place of charming scenery and genial climate where subtropical plants and vegetation flourishes. The Ring then takes you on to the noble Heritage Town of Kenmare. You could cover the Ring of Kerry in a day, but you would need two or even three days if you wanted to take in some of the more rural and less travelled

areas such as Valencia Island and the Gaeltacht area around Portmagee and Ballinskelligs or the mountainous interior of the peninsula, that is known as Ireland’s Highlands. The roads here, particularly the Bealach Oisin Pass and Ballaghbeama Pass of the interior are fabulous coach free routes ideal for quiet drives or cycling tours. There is something for everyone along the ring, we have just mentioned a few, there are lovely bars, restaurants and even some nice shops in the towns along the route for those looking for a little retail therapy of course you can view the great Star Wars movie location along here too so make sure you keep your eyes opened for some celebrities, you never know who you might meet. So should you wish to take a stay-cation in your own county put the Ring of Kerry in your diary?

DEVELOPMENT OF EATING DRINKING (AND SWALLOWING SKILLS)

IN BABY’S FIRST YEAR

The development of eating, drinking and swallowing skills is a very complex and lengthy process, which is not possible to be described within the limits of this article. It is important to be aware that feeding skills can influence communication development, as the same muscles groups are used for both eating and talking. The speech and language therapist, together with other members of multi-disciplinary team is involved in the diagnosis, treatment and management of children with feeding problems. PRE-BIRTH The development of feeding skills starts very early in life. In utero the foetus begins to swallow amniotic fluid between 10 and 17 weeks of gestation; at 32 weeks a clear gag reflex can be observed together with a cough. Sucking also begins in utero and it is important to distinguish between two different types of suck. The ‘non-nutritive suck’ (observable in the foetus between 18 and 24 weeks) is rhythmical, but does not have to be coordinated with swallowing. The second type of suck is the ‘active feeding or nutritive suck’ and it can be seen first in the 34-37 week old foetus. Again, it is rhythmical, but slower and appears more effortful (but there should be no signs of respiratory distress). SHORTLY AFTER BIRTH Efficient feeding is usually established soon after birth in the full term baby weighing 1900 grams. The baby’s position during feeding is very important, as it influences how well babies suck. Non-nutritive sucking can be seen between feeds/meals, especially if the baby is hungry. There is a substantial evidence that this suck has not only comforting effects on the baby, but can significantly decrease the length of stay in hospital in pre-term infants. The baby normally makes a transition to nutritive sucking within a few seconds after receiving a nipple in the mouth. The baby can control the speed, volume and timing of sucking and also his pauses (for breathing) in sucking during feeding. The burst-pause pattern can be

26

Connect WITH YOUR HEALTH

an important foundation in mother/carer-baby relationship and early communication. During the pauses the mother/ carer usually says something to the baby and eye-contact may be established. Good coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing is crucial to ensure the baby’s safety and well-being. TRANSITIONAL FEEDING - THE FIRST SPOONS This experience usually starts

Once the spoon feeding is established it is important to gradually introduce new tastes to provide multiple experiences with food. This help children to eat better in the future, as they learn to accept various foods from early on. 6 MONTHS TO ONE YEAR Children become more actively involved in their feeding from 6 months of age. They will be learning self-feeding skills (eg holding a biscuit or grabbing

between 4 and 6 months of life. Initially the baby takes his new food using his existing sucking skills, he ‘spits out’ the food usually caused by the “in and out” sucking tongue movements (anterior to posterior). This may look as if the baby does not like the new food. However, after some time the baby will develop a new range of mouth movements (especially of the jaw and the tongue), which will result in less spillage. The physical position also develops with improving head control and sitting balance. The baby’s hand(s) to mouth movements are becoming more coordinated. The carer’s appropriate positioning of his/her body and that of the baby’s body play an important role here. When starting to spoon feed it is recommended to use a spoon with a flat bowl, plastic and nonbreakable. The food should stick to the spoon (not too runny and not too thick). In Ireland we usually start with pure baby rice mixed with baby’s regular milk.

the spoon). They will be eating a range of various textures and tastes. Although a healthy child is unlikely to choke, the type of food should always match the level of oral skills development and small children have to be supervised during all meals. If a larger lump of food gets to the back of the mouth too soon (before it is chewed well enough) the gag reflex and a strong cough should prevent it from entering the throat and choking. Chewing skills develop gradually. Typically the child progresses from smooth pureed to lumpy textures (first soft and small lumps, gradually increasing in size and texture) followed by solid consistency. The solids are introduced in stages as well (quick dissolving e.g. ‘baby’ rusk, soft chewy e.g. pasta, chewy e.g. meat). It is important to make one change at the time, so if introducing a new consistency do not offer a new taste at the same meal. About 1 -2 months after

CONNECT MAGAZINE August 2016

the spoon feeding is well established most children are ready for cup drinking. From the mouth development point of view it is important to try an open cup (not a ‘sippy’ cup which promotes sucking and immature mouth motion/ forward tongue positioning.). Thickened liquids (milkshake texture) can be easiest at the start, as they flow slowly and gives the child more time to organise his mouth shape and movements. Once the child can bite, chew and swallow a variety of textures (and is able to pick up an object with his thumb and fingers and bring it to the mouth) finger foods can be introduced. FINAL THOUGHT Eating, drinking and swallowing are a set of complex behaviours with skills and attitudes that are learned gradually, over time. The social aspect of feeding should not be forgotten. The focus in feeding should not be on getting food into the child. Such an emphasis puts pressure on both the feeder and the child. Instead, the focus should be on the development of positive feeding experiences, where mealtimes are pleasant for everyone. To help the child achieve that let them discover food by having them involved in simple food preparation and food related play. Accept the mess and make it fun!

Fertility Massage Therapy is a deep; yet gentle, non-invasive therapy that works by bringing the organs within the abdominal area back into alignment, releasing pressure and strengthening the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This in turn will improve blood, nerve and lymph flow. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. The massage also focuses on breaking down scar tissue, helping to loosen harden debris (that has been accumulating in your gut for years) encouraging a natural movement and clearing both physical and emotional congestion, leaving you and your abdomen feeling lighter and freer. Why Focus on Reproductive, Digestive & Lower Back? Our abdominal cavity is serviced by the same neural pathways, connecting the organs, muscles and connective tissue of the reproductive and digestive systems along with the lower back muscles. If one organ or muscle is misaligned, blocked or damaged by scar tissue – all the others will be disrupted, and can, in turn, send the whole body into disarray. It is important to note that 80% of our immune system lives within our digestive tract. Immunity, digestion and fertility are closely linked. Therefore it is important to massage and treat the whole torso area, aiming to achieve homeostasis! Testimonials: “I started to have fertility treatment last year 2015. The treatment caught my interest to help regulate my periods, PCOS. My mind was working overtime. I was constantly worried and scared, thinking day and night about my dream to have another baby. The space was brilliant and extremely pleasureful. Alexandra is brilliant, so kind hearted and I would not have gotten through it without her. I am now expecting my second baby all thanks to Alexandra. I would highly recommend this service, you will feel brilliant after it, mind and body. 10 out of 10!” C North Kerry “Fertility massage for me was a path I had not taken. I wanted to help my body heal from miscarriage and heal from failed ovulation induction. I felt fertility massage would help me body and mind. Fertility massage is a focussed massage that can be adapted to your particular needs, at the hands of a skilled therapist. It is very relaxing and soothing, performed in a warm comfortable atmosphere. I would highly recommend Alexandra, as a skilled compassionate and expert practitioner, whom supports you holistically on your journey.“ J Tralee

The Benefits Of Massage What exactly are the benefits of receiving massage or bodywork treatments? Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can: •

Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion Assist with shorter, easier labour for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays Ease medication dependence Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defence system Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin Increase joint flexibility Lessen depression and anxiety Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation Reduce post-surgery adhesions and swelling Reduce spasms and cramping Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller Relieve migraine pain

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen. Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and

externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fastpaced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into: • • • • • •

Decreased anxiety Enhanced sleep quality Greater energy Improved concentration Increased circulation Reduced fatigue

Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits. Profound Effects In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage: • Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain. • Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow • High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones • Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping • Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. . • Increase the Benefits with Frequent Visits Getting a massage can do you a world of

LISTEN TO YOUR THOUGHTS There is a single mental move you can make which, in a millisecond, will solve enormous problems for you. It has the potential to improve almost any personal or business situation you will ever encounter ... and it could literally propel you down the path to incredible success. We have a name for this magic mental activity ... it is called DECISION. Committed decisions show up in two places—your calendar and your checkbook. No matter what you say you value, or even think your priorities are, you have only to look at last year’s calendar and checkbook to see the decisions you have made about what you truly value. For example, I am committed to growth, both professionally and personally. A review of my calendar always shows multiple continuing education courses, seminars, and workshops in both the personal growth area, as well as in my profession. My checkbook is filled with tuition disbursements, purchases of books and videos. Bottom line ... see how you have reserved your time ... look at your expenditures ... those are the road maps to the decisions you have made in the past. After making a true decision, especially the tough ones, we usually feel a tremendous burden has been lifted from our shoulders.” Sean Foran - Business and Personal Development Coach. good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.

Fáilte Romhaibh By Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill Fáilte thar nais. Many people who wear partial dentures often ask about new types of dentures that are now available. Dentures are usually either made of acrylic or chrome metal. Acrylic dentures are made to cover as much of the dental arch as possible to help with retention. For upper dentures this means covering the palate. Traditionally, chrome partial dentures are retained in the mouth by using clasps that clip around the remaining teeth. For upper partial dentures, this often means that the palate is not completely covered. There are some other methods available when making chrome partial dentures so that the metal clasps are not needed. This is often necessary if the clasps are visible on the front teeth and as such, they would not be aesthetically pleasing. Some of the remaining natural teeth in the mouth can be crowned (covered) with metal and porcelain. These crowns can have grooves inserted in them when they are being made, which can allow a partial denture to slot into place, without the need for clasps. Always ask your dentist for all the options. Beir Bua agus Beannacht. MAC DOMHNAILL DENTAL TRALEE, 11 Denny Street Tralee 066 7121457, fiacloir@gmail.com

LOCAL DYNAMIC DUO BRING YOUR CARDS TO LIFE JOANNA, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW THE COMPANY BEGAN? I'm a law graduate from Poland living here for 12 years and my husband Derek is an IT graduate from Tralee. When we were getting married, I wanted something 'wow' for our guests, and so the seed for Digital Greetings was born. We created bespoke invitations; a card containing a video screen inside where we displayed photos of us over the years. It was a big surprise and our guests were very impressed. Afterwards we made thank you cards, showing our wedding pictures and we included our favourite music. It was a fantastic way to capture our special day.

GREAT IDEA GUYS, I'VE NEVER SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THAT BEFORE Derek: Yes, just like a book, there is something very satisfying about holding it in your hand, something that an e-card simply cannot replace. I wanted to create a hybrid of the digital and the physical. A marriage, if you will.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW IT ACTUALLY WORKS?

Derek: It is a real card incorporating an LCD screen that displays the customers bespoke message along with audio, video and images. The customer can either choose to upload the content themselves or we can do it for them. The card is fully rechargeable and comes with a USB cable.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR DIGITAL GREETINGS? We received lots of enquires from businesses so we are launching bespoke video brochures and business cards giving clients a unique way to differentiate themselves from their competitors and portray their brand in a modern and exciting way.

FINALLY WHAT DO YOU DO TO CHILL OUT AND UNWIND?

Derek: I enjoy playing and watching many sports and I'm just back from Euro 2016 in France, which was an amazing trip. I also enjoy music and when I have time I try to play the guitar. Joanna: I enjoy socialising and I try to travel as often as possible. Right now we are looking forward to a well deserved night off at the Rose Ball as part of the International Rose of Tralee Festival.

Tax Relief – Tuition Fees

Can I claim Tax Relief on College Fees? Any individual can claim tax relief on qualifying Third Level fees. Qualifying fees means tuition fees, including student contribution. Unfortunately no relief is available for registration fees, examination fees, or administration fees. AMOUNT OF RELIEF Tax Relief is at the standard tax rate of 20%. The maximum amount of relief in respect of qualifying fees is €7,000 per student in 2016. NB: First €3,000(full time course) or €1,500(part-time course) is discarded. EXAMPLES: My son is in College and I paid €3,000 in tuition fees, is any Tax Relief due? No, as the amount which qualifies for relief does exceed excess of €3,000 therefore, no relief is due. I have two Children in college and paid €6,000 in tuition fees, is any Tax Relief due? Yes Tax Relief is due on excess over €3,000 which is €3,000 as follows: €3,000 X 20% = €600 Tax Credit I have two children in Private College and paid €11,000 in fees, am I due Relief? Yes provided the course is an approved third level course, relief would apply. Tax relief would be available on the excess over €3,000; which is €8,000 in this example, assuming fees are split between children, relief as follows: €8,000 X 20% = €1,600 Tax Credit Note the Maximum of €7,000 is per student so wouldn’t apply in this case.

HR Management Paternity Leave

Good news for working parents about to welcome a new child into the family following the passing of the Paternity leave and Benefit Act 2016. Traditionally new fathers used their annual leave which was granted at the employer’s discretion. This act will allow relevant parents to take paternity leave from employment to enable the employee to provide or assist in the provision of care to the child or to provide support to • • • •

The mother of the child The adopting mother Sole male adopter To entitle a surviving parent to employment leave on the death of a relevant parent

The Act will allows 2 weeks paternity leave to be taken as one continuous period of 2 weeks and will be paid at a rate of €230 a week the same as maternity benefit and based on the same PRSI contribution requirements. Paternity leave can be taken at any time commencing on the date of the birth or placement in the case of an adoption and ending not later than 26weeks thereafter. This means that a couple can chose to avail of the leave at the time of the birth, or at the end of the period of paid maternity leave or at any time in between.

Negative Reviews, Don’t Stress!

Reviews can sometimes be ruthless, So, what do you do? DELEGATE - to one person who can respond immediately and then follow up yourself on what needs to be addressed in-house. IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF ISSUE - Not all negative feedback is the same. Some reviews are constructive help, others are disgruntled complaints or even trolling. RESPOND TO EVERYTHING - respond to all feedback. Good and Bad. HAVE PATIENCE, MAKE CHANGES - It can be easy to dismiss feedback as ill-informed, keep in mind that the better you handle a situation, the more respect you stand to gain. GIVE YOUR CUSTOMER A CHANCE - they are often well-versed in your industry, let them voice their opinion, you might even learn something. TAKE IT OFFLINE - If your conversation starts to spiral, don’t be afraid to send them a private message instead of letting it drag on in everyone’s news feeds. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY - Social media is destination #1 for negative feedback and complaints, but don’t take it too much to heart.
