Longhouse Poet’s Thyestes win another great day for pointing

HERE’S always something special about Thyestes day at Gowran Park, and this year’s event was significant for Irish racing as a whole, the first fixture after the lifting of crowd restrictions. Then Longhouse Poet made it an extra special day for me by winning the big race for Martin Brassil. I was associated with the horse’s early days when the Yeats gelding came to me to be broken. He stood out as a lovely prospect from the start. I rode him to win a maiden for Sam Curling at Boulta in January 2019 and continued to be involved with him when he joined the Brassil stable. He got his track career off to a brilliant start when beating the topclass Monkfish in a bumper at the 2019 Punchestown festival, and I won a maiden hurdle on him at Navan towards the end of that year. He was always a lovely athletic type and a very good jumper. I’m not surprised how his career has developed and I think he could be an Aintree Grand National horse. I’m thrilled for his breeder John Duggan, from Birdhill in County Tipperary, a great supporter of pointto-pointing and Irish jump racing. A few seasons ago his mare Longhouse Music won 13 races, sharing the champion pointer title with Kruzhlinin. The Thyestes is a proper test of a three-mile chaser and it’s been a great race for ex-pointers. Total Recall, the 2020 winner for Willie Mullins, was with the Neilan family from Kilcolgan when I rode him to win at Rathcannon in 2014. The Mullins-trained 2019 winner Invitation Only started for Sean Doyle as an impressive Ballynoe winner. The same venue saw a maiden win for Liam Burke’s popular 2016 Thyestes winner My Murphy. The 2018 winner Monbeg Notorious was a Donnchadh Doyletrained winner at Tralee and Champagne West, who won for Henry de Bromhead in 2017, kicked off his career with a Loughanmore win for Eoin Doyle. It’s a great boost for producers and handlers when these big staying handicaps are won by former pointto-pointers. This season’s Troytown winner Run Wild Fred, beaten by

race at his mercy, so this was a welldeserved compensation. This time he survived a mistake at the fourth-last and he’ll be a fine prospect with jumping experience. Colonel Harry should do well at the sales for Tullow handler Patrick Farrell, who hasn’t had many runners since producing Supreme Jet to win at Oldtown two seasons ago. Supreme Jet is with Oliver McKiernan now and jumped well when winning a maiden hurdle by a big margin at Punchestown last month.

Tobar, trained by Denis Murphy for Brian Acheson, was an impressive 20-length winner of the first division of the five-year-old geldings’ maiden. With Acheson’s Robcour operation investing a lot of money in young jumping talent, his involvement in point-to-pointing makes sense. It’s an ideal education for the youngsters, allowing them to mature before they get to the racecourse, and giving them a grounding in all the essential aspects they will need in their future careers. It also provides an influential owner like Acheson with a useful handle on the form of horses who may come up for sale on the open market. That’s an important tool for a major owner to have.

Gigginstown’s involvement with a range of point-to-point handlers was a big help when it came to talent spotting and Acheson will follow the Gigginstown model by sending An Tobar to one of his top-ranking trainers for next season. An Tobar’s sire Gentlewave, also responsible for the owner’s Kerry National winner Poker Party and last season’s Grade 1-placed novice hurdler Gentlemansgame, is enjoying a fine spell in points. Only a couple of weeks ago at Carrigarostig, he had two good winners, Gentle Queen, a mare trained by my brother Paurick, and the Colin Bowe-trained gelding Senior Chief. The second division of the Ballyvodock maiden also produced a smart-looking winner in Colonel Harry. The Shirocco gelding was unlucky to fall at the last at Damma House in November when he had the

A first point-to-point winner is a big landmark, and it was good to see Hannah Phillips get off the mark on the Tom Keating-trained De Nordener at Ballyvodock. Hannah’s mother Lucy Townsley was champion lady rider in 1995 and her father Michael Phillips was a very well-known amateur who rode 141 winners in a 20-year-career in points. I got on the scoreboard on La Feline for Sam Curling in the mares’ open, but it was only by the skin of our teeth. Michael Looney rode a fine tactical race on Dromahane winner O Mio Babbino, stealing a clear advantage early on. It almost worked out perfectly for them because it was only in the very last stride that we got up to force a dead-heat.

The best is yet to come as the stars of spring emerge

This coming weekend the momentum of the season quickens with the first four-year-old maidens at Ballinaboola, Bellharbour, and Tallow. Thanks to a lot of behind-thescenes work, the insurance issue which threatened so many of this season’s fixtures, has been dealt with – and it’s all systems go. With Covid restrictions lifted there’s a lot of optimism around. From what I’ve seen and heard, the next few weeks and months will see many exciting young horses in action for the first time. I get the impression the best prospects are well spread out throughout the country. Wherever you go point-to-pointing, you’ll see competitive racing and perhaps a future star.

TALENT SPOTTER Conor O’Keeffe is taking rapid steps as rider, handler and dealer from his family’s farm

ACING and pointto-pointing have always been in the family. My grandfather James bred the 2012 Champion Chase winner Finian’s Rainbow and my younger brother Sean was champion under-21 point-to-point rider in 2018 and is having a great run on the track now. When Sean and I were growing up there weren’t many horses around at home, but we always had an interest in racing and there would have been the odd point-to-pointer that we would hack around the fields at weekends. I always had it in my head that I wanted to be a jockey but when I went to college that started to go a bit. I studied agricultural science at UCD and it was a great experience, but I would say I came out of it with a degree in Paddy Power rather than a degree in agricultural science – racing was always number one for me.

I knew I could give racing a go and if it didn’t work out I always had it to fall back on, so I went over to Dan Skelton’s for a year because I wanted to see what it was like. It was such a large yard, far bigger than anything I would have worked in before, but I was impressed by the ambition Dan and Harry have. When I came home from Britain, and after spending a year with Con O’Keeffe, I took out my rider’s licence and started looking into training a few pointers. My father Jim began breeding horses again when Sean and I had started showing more of an interest in racing. That left me with some horses to train last season and we put in a two-furlong circular gallop at home.

Mr Saxobeat was my first runner as a handler when he pulled up at Curraghmore last season. I ran him again in Fairyhouse in April and he was running a good race before he fell at the second-last. Tom Gibney spotted him and thankfully bought him and he went on and won his bumper easily at the Galway festival last summer on his first start for Tom. The fact that we were only starting out, to be able to move anything on at all was a good start, and then for the horse to win first time for Tom was a real bonus. As time was going on I was

nearly saying to myself that I may put the idea of riding a winner out of my head, but twice I finished placed on our Chitchat Sally in the autumn, and then I was third on Meetuatnine (left with O’Keeffe) in a four-year-old maiden at Boulta in December. She is owned by Sean McCabe from Monageer, near Enniscorthy. I became friends with Sean in UCD and he came to be mad into racing during college. He had always said that he would love to get involved in one, so we went up to the August sale and were able to pick her up.

Sean probably knew that I had always wanted to ride a winner, and to be fair he gave me the confidence to have a bit of faith in myself. Thankfully, the mare stepped up and not only gave me my first winner as a rider, but also as a handler, when she won in Aghabullogue last month – that was just a brilliant day. We brought her over to the sales at Cheltenham on Saturday, which was a new experience. I had only ever previously sold two stores myself, so it was a step into the relative unknown. We were confident enough though that we would get her sold as we only had a relatively low reserve on her, but to sell her for £40,000 was a brilliant result for us after buying her for just €5,700. Fixtures get the green light after insurance agreement AFTER months of uncertainty due to the lack of an underwriter for insurance policies, a full programme of point-topoint fixtures for this month has been given the all-clear. A breakthrough in talks between all parties resulted in the creation of a new insurance scheme, the National Hunt Steeplechase, Point-to-Point and Field Insurance Programme (NHSPFS), which will provide insurance cover for hunting activities, including point-to-pointing. There had been fears that up to half Februar y’s fixtures would be unable to take place, but that has been avoided thanks to the breakthrough. It came at a crucial time for point-to-point owners and trainers with the new season of four-year-old maiden races set to get under way this Sunday. E a c h o f S u n d a y ’s t h r e e fixtures will host a four-yearold maiden, including the return to the fixture list of Ballinaboola, outside New Ross in County Wexford. Since its introduction in 2011, the track has produced several smart track performers, with the last two editions of the f o u r- y e a r- o l d m a i d e n o n Sunday’s card having produced two of last season’s Cheltenham Festival winners.

that Sean has owned – it’s probably the best and worst possible start. I have to keep telling him it doesn’t always work out like this and to try moderate his expectations. Training is the route I want to go down to build up the yard here, but financially it has to be viable. We can’t afford to be going to the store sales, so my brother Sean and I have been buying some foals over the last few years. The first batch we bought have now turned three, so we can start to get stuck into them, and they will either go to the sales or we will break them to go point-to-pointing. It’s a real family operation. We have a dairy farm and are milking 80 each day, but my dad still finds time to help me out and would ride out one or two every day. Sean is flying at the minute on the track. He tries to get down one day a week and my younger brother Roan, who is about to start the mocks for his junior cert, helps at weekends. Anything that we are making out of it will be invested into home here to try to build up the facilities. Murphy firing again

The Denis Murphy stable had been notable by its absence from point-to-point action, w i t h t h e Ba l l y b oy s t ab l e s operator not having saddled a runner in eight weeks. Before last weekend’s action, the last of his horses to feature competitively was at the Killinick Harriers fixture at Lingstown on December 5, after which he elected to give his string a break after some disappointing performances. “I thought the horses were a bit off at Lingstown, they didn’t seem to be firing, so I just backed off most of them until after Christmas,” Murphy said. “That has left me with a good few autumn four-year-olds left over to run as five-year-olds. I wouldn’t usually have many five-year-olds for this time of the year, but I have 24 or 25 to run now. We’ll be busy in those races now.” The Wexford native announced his return with the impressive debut of the Brian Acheson-owned An Tobar, a wide-margin winner at Ballyvodock on Sunday.

The five-year-old is the first horse he has trained for the Dornan Group chief executive, with Acheson choosing to educate a number of his store purchases in point-to-points, having last season entrusted a small number of young stock to Murphy’s countyman Bowe. “Brian asked if I would train for him at the Land Rover sale and, of course, I was delighted to have a horse in the yard for him,” Murphy said.

Hughes the catalyst

The victory of Chantry House in Saturday’s Cotswold Chase will be forever associated with providing JP McManus with his 4,000th winner, and there is a connection between that landmark victory and the same total AP McCoy reached on Mountain Tunes at Towcester eight years earlier. Both Chantry House and Mountain Tunes were produced to win their maiden points by Cian Hughes. The 36-year-old sent out Mountain Tunes to win his four-year-old maiden at Tyrella in 2013 b efore he wa s s o ld to the Martinstown Stud proprietor, with Chantry House also under Hughes’s care when opening his account in a four-year-old maiden at Tattersalls in 2018 for then owner Eric Elliott.

Return from US a triumph for Brain Power

THE picturesque coastal venue of Tyrella played host to the first success for high-profile pointing recruit Brain Power since he won the 2019 Amer ican Grand National Hurdle. Now under the care of Wa r re n Ew i ng, w h o ha d initially bought the Kalanisi gelding at the store sales in 2014, the 11-year-old Brain Power swiftly put a disappointing effort at Kirkistown behind him. Always travelling comfortably in the hands of Oran McGill, the pair inched to the front approaching the final fence in the Cosy Roof open, from where they were able to account for Creadan Grae by five lengths. “Michael Buckley offered him to me and I was delighted to have him back. He’s a great horse to have in the yard for the young lads to get experience,” said Templepatr ick-based Ewing. “We had aspergillosis [a respiratory disease], which is why he ran so badly the last day, but he’s back right now and will go for another open in a couple of weeks’ time.” Compensation followed for connections of Creadan Grae in the Armstrong Auctions older mares’ maiden when Tamlaght Eyes ran out the most clear-cut winner of the afternoon. Despite pulling up in all three previous runs for Rodney Arthur, a change of stables provided punters with plenty of confidence as she was sent off joint-favourite on her first outing for former rider-turnedtrainer Gerald Quinn. The 29-year-old Rasharkin native, who rode subsequent Grade 1 winner Yorkhill on his pointing debut in 2014, has teamed up with Broughshane owner Philip McBurney, and the 15-length victory of the Doyen mare over Any Time provided rider Noel McParlan

After failing to finish in both outings last season for Gavin Cromwell, the switch to the yard of Naul trainer William Harvey has brought about an instant change of fortunes. The six-year-old cut through the field under Ben Harvey approaching the second-last and he proved two lengths too good for Kilmoganny. The Dennison JCB five-yearold geldings’ maiden may have featured only six horses but it was not short of drama with Shane Donohue’s Song For My Father seeming to have won the race by a length from Time For A Pint. Celebrations of connections were short lived, however, when the stewards disqualified Song For My Father after rider Aaron Sinnott failed to weigh in at the correct weight. That presented the victory to Shark Hanlon’s recent Turtulla third Time For A Pint.

THE Denis Murphy-trained newcomer An Tobar created a hug e impression with a bloodless success in the first d i v i si o n o f t h e O ’Con n e ll Group five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Ballyvodock. The debutant An Tobar, a €72,000 graduate of the 2020 Goffs Land Rover sale, slipped into a lovely early rhythm close to the lead before Luke Murphy allowed his mount to take the lead after three-out. It was soon apparent the son of Gentlewave was in a different league from his rivals as he bounded clear from the second-last to account for Good For Scope by 20 lengths in the colours of Brian Acheson, whose track horses race under the familiar Robcour banner. “He’s a machine. We knew well beforehand what he was like; he’s a fine big specimen of a beast and could be top drawer,” Denis Murphy said. “Brian told me the day that Mags O’Toole bought the horse at the Land Rover sale that he was coming to me to train. His work has always been special and he’s a lovely prospect.” The Gentlewave gelding has already left Murphy’s Wexford stables and is yet another impressive point-to-point winner bound for the yard of Henry de Bromhead. Although he did well to survive a blunder at the fourthlast fence, he put the race to bed effortlessly for Pa King before the final fence to see off Oak Creek by six lengths. “That was compensation for Damma House and he will hopefully now go to the sales,” Farrell said of his brother Harry’s Colonel Harry, who is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 placed performer Colonel Yeager. Phillips, whose parents Michael Phillips and Lucy Townsley were accomplished amateur riders, attained a notable feat by partnering her first career winner on Tom Keating’s De Nordener in the first division of the Norma Walsh Solicitors and Guilders Bar six-year-old-and-upwards maiden. De Nordener, who finished second to Just A Dime on his previous start in an Aghabullogue winners’ contest just over a fortnight ago, led from six fences out. The son of Ocovang o powered clear before the last to beat Big Bill Newman by five leng ths. O w ner-trainer Keating indicated that De Nordener would be sold. Darragh Allen brought up a notable milestone by recording his 50th pointing success on Michelle Gannon’s homebred Rock On Harry in the second division of that contest.
