Who knows what lies in store before the season ends in May?
W
ELCOME to the new point-to-point season, which kicked off in the north at Toomebridge on Saturday. Who knows what lies in store between now and the end of the season in May? If you told me this time last year I would become champion for the first time since 2015, I would have laughed. Mostly thanks to the new champion trainer Sam Curling, who encouraged me to take more rides than I had bargained for, I found myself in a good position to challenge with a few months of the season remaining. I decided it was worth chasing an opportunity that would never come again. I got terrific support from Sam and other handlers, and I’m glad I did it. But now, after something like 5,500 rides in point-to-points, I’m going to scale back. I want to devote more time to my family and to the horses in my own yard, so I’m going to take things easier. It’s not that I’ve stopped enjoying race-riding. Definitely not. During the summer I got a great thrill from riding Comfort Zone to win the amateur handicap at Galway for Joseph O’Brien in the JP McManus colours. Every winner I’ve ridden at Ballybrit, my local track, has meant a lot. This one was overdue by any reckoning. I was a 7lb claimer when I won the race for Pat Hughes on Rapid Deployment in 2003. I had a few rides at the Listowel festival to get back into the swing of things and I’m looking forward to the season, but I won’t be chasing around the country as in the past. This time last year I’m sure most point-to-point followers expected Colin Bowe to retain the handlers’ title he’d held for more than a decade. However, even the best in the business can have a spell when things don’t go according to plan. As usual, Colin produced several promising horses that did well at the sales, yet the team as a whole never hit a sustained period of form. I’m sure Colin will be back with a vengeance this season, making a strong bid to regain the top spot from Sam, who has already stated he does not expect to have quite as much firepower as last season when

enjoying a great mix of talented older horses and smart youngsters. Wexford remains the main centre of power. In addition to the Bowe team, the Doyle brothers will be well stocked for the season ahead. Denis Murphy, Jonathan Fogarty, Mick Goff and Rob James are sure to be influential, while the likes of Robert Tector, Paul Pierce and Gary Murphy will be aiming to build on the success of recent seasons. In the north, Stuart Crawford, Ger Quinn and Paddy Turley are likely to be among the leading players with their young horses. Elsewhere, David Christie will no doubt be strong in the older horses’ division. Kildare-based Ian McCarthy had the best strike-rate of any of the leading trainers last season, a brilliant 52 per cent, sending out 15 winners from only 29 runs. He trained the champion pointer Hearts And Spades, who won eight races.
One name missing this season is Pat Doyle, one of the finest trainers in the history of point-to-pointing, and an exceptional judge of a young horse. His son Jack has taken over at the Holycross yard and will be a force to be reckoned with. On the riding front, Barry O’Neill and Rob James will battle away for the title they shared in 2024. Provided the pair avoid injury it’s hard to see anyone else getting the same sort of winning opportunities. Eoin Mahon, Stephen Connor and Brian Lawless made a big impact last season. All three recorded strikerates above 20 per cent. With a bigger volume of rides, any of the three could enter the title picture at some point in the years ahead. Shane Cotter (16 wins) and David Doyle (14) had a hard-fought duel for last season’s under-21 title and can progress further up the ladder. We have seen many talented young
riders emerge in recent years but have lost several promising youngsters to the conditional ranks. Understandably, they want to make a living from their talent, and it’s good to see so many of them getting established on the track. Their ability reflects well on our sector, and benefits the industry as a whole. But at the same time, if pointto-pointing is to continue to prosper long into the future, we need a strong group of experienced riders at the centre.
Noel shows the youngsters how to do it in style Proof that there is still plenty of life among the old-timers came at Toomebridge on Saturday when Noel McParlan, champion rider in the northern region four times in a career that started in 2002, played a starring part. Noel shared a treble with trainer
Ger Quinn, kicking off with the French-bred L’Alpagueur, who jumped well and took the four-yearold geldings’ maiden in great style. The pair followed up with Doagh in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden and Crazy Nancy in the mares’ maiden. The two geldings, both newcomers, are owned by Philip McBurney and are now due to be sold. Brian Dunleavy had the 50th win of his career on Sarah’s Sister for Aidan Fitzgerald in the four-year-old mares’ maiden. The Order Of St George mare is a half-sister to My Sister Sarah who won seven races for Willie Mullins. Their dam is a halfsister to Grade 1 winner J’y Vole. With only 32 runners, it was a lowkey start to the season. Expect things to get livelier in the coming weeks. And, although I wasn’t involved on the opening day, I’m looking forward to getting into action again.

Ross Sugrue talks about his early days in the pointto-point field and the thrill of his switch to the track
A
S A Kerryman, having two winners at the Listowel Harvest Festival was unbelievable. I turned conditional towards the end of July and rode my first winner as a professional on Rosenborg at Wexford at the start of August. Then Kilt won for Philip Rothwell on the Thursday at Listowel and Potters Pal won for Tom Cooper the following day. Listowel has been good to me. My first track winner as an amateur was there on Galon De Vauzelle for Philip in 2024, so three of my four track winners have come there. I get a different kick out of riding a winner on the track, especially when it’s for people who have been so good to me. Potters Pal was particularly satisfying because Gerry Mangan was part of the syndicate that owned him. I started riding out for Tom when I was very young, and Gerry has been a huge help since I was growing up. To ride a winner for both of them at Listowel was unreal. Both my sisters work for Tom too, so there’s a strong connection with the yard. Turning professional was never really the plan for me. I had always been happy enough as an amateur, but Philip approached me after Punchestown and asked if I would turn. Until he came to me, it was never in my head. I thought long and hard about it and decided I would give it a go. Philip supplied my first pointing winner, my first track winner and my first winner as a conditional. We have a very good relationship. He has been a big supporter of mine right from the start. My father, Raymond, encouraged me as well. He left the decision up to me, but he said, “Why not give it a go? You can always go back.” My weight is very good at the minute, I can do 10st, and Garry Cribbin is my agent. I didn’t know that my ride at Bartlemy in May would be my last in a point-to-point. I had a bad fall there and broke both my collarbone and hip, which meant another spell on the sidelines. At that stage I still wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I have had a few setbacks with broken bones over the years, but you always want to get back riding as quickly as possible, so that is what you work towards. I have never once thought about hanging up the boots. I absolutely love riding, and I’m
I wouldn’t be where I am now without pointing not educated for anything else! My home is now in Wexford, and I am with Philip four days a week now. There is a lovely bunch of horses there to look forward to. I also have an interest in a few pointers with other lads, so I do those and school for a few other people as well. I will follow and stay involved in the point-to-points as much as I can. The change from pointing to the track has not been as big an adjustment as I thought it would be. Point-to-pointing is very competitive, and so is the track. The main thing has been getting used to the pace of two-mile races instead of always riding over three miles. Everything happens that bit quicker. I grew up in Farmer’s
‘‘
Bridge, outside Tralee. We had a farm and always had horses at home, both racehorses and hunters. We lived at the top of Tom Cooper’s gallop, and I started riding out for him when I was very young, before going pony racing.
I rode Forpadydeplasterer at home. It was good to get the chance to sit on a horse like him when I was young. I went on to ride about 30 pony racing winners and won seven or eight derbies, including the Abbeyfeale Derby. Gerry Mangan was someone I looked up to from the start. I used to go with him when he was riding and schooling, and he was a big help. We don’t speak every day, but I still ask him for advice. He has known me a long time and has seen me come through from those early days. He is due to get his trainer’s licence in the coming weeks and has a lovely bunch of
horses for point-to-points as well as a few for the track. He will be a trainer to watch for sure.
D
AD still goes all over the country to watch me. He rarely misses a race and gets a great kick out of seeing me ride a winner. He was there when I got my first pointing winner on Lesssaidthebetter at Ballinaboola in February 2023. That was a long time coming after making my debut in December 2018. I’ve had good support from plenty of people along the way. Sean Doyle and James Kenny have been very good to me. James is one of the younger,

up-and-coming trainers. There’s a lot of graft involved in making your way as an amateur. You’re travelling the country schooling for lots of different people and trying to get opportunities, and a lot of work goes into it before you ever get to the races. I rode 22 winners between the flags and I probably wouldn’t be where I am now without pointing. For young riders starting out, I’d like to see a novice riders’ race at every meeting, perhaps at the end of the card. It would give them more opportunities to get going. My advice to anyone starting out as an amateur would be to keep your head down, work hard and keep trying. I’ll miss the craic around the point-to-points, especially in the weighing room, but I’d like to still be about. I don’t switch off from horses very much, although I do follow the football, especially when Kerry are involved. For now, I want to keep getting rides and add a few more winners to the tally. WEEKEND REPORT
MID ANTRIM AT TOOMEBRIDGE SATURDAY
‘We didn’t think he could be beaten’ – L’Alpagueur steals the opening show NOT for the first time at Toomebridge, Ger Quinn and Noel McParlan proved the combination to follow as they started the new season with a treble. The pair struck first in the Dennison Commercials fouryear-old geldings’ maiden when L’Alpagueur made all t h e r u n n i n g t o re g i s t e r a comprehensive debut success. A private purchase from his native France, the Born To Sea gelding is closely related to Willie Mullins’ ill-fated 1 4 0 - rat e d p e r f o r m e r Po r t Joulain, and a bright career looks to lie ahead of him after he defeated fellow first-timer Gortahara by eight and a half lengths. “We thought a lot of him coming here. His homework was all brilliant and we didn’t think he could be beat here today,” Quinn said. “He put in a serious round of jumping.” McParlan was again sporting the silks of leading owner Philip McBurney when he doubled up aboard Doagh in the Raymar t five-year-old geldings’ maiden. Another debutant to make an immediate impact around an undulating track which typically favours experience, the €8,000 Idaho gelding swept to the front approaching the penultimate obstacle. From there he was able to ease to a 21-length victory over Lupin Du Chenet. “The other horse [Lupin Du

Chenet] went off very hard in front. Noel gave ours a patient ride and he picked up easily,” McBurney said. “He did it well but will also improve a lot for the run. He’s a very nice horse who will now be sold. I bought him off Paul Ferguson who acquired him as a foal.” T h e Ja m e s B ro w n Ke r rowned Crazy Nancy completed the McParlan and Quinn hat-trick in the Caherty St a b l e s f i v e - y e a r- o l d a n d upwards mares’ maiden. Beaten by just a head in the c o r re sp o n d ing c o nte st 1 2 months earlier, the seven-yearold avenged that narrow defeat on only her second start since. Making the best of her way home from the penultimate fence, a foot-perfect leap at the last saw her seal a seven-length victory over the newcomer Mount Heather. Robert Brown Kerr, son of the winning owner, said: “The last time she ran she got a very nasty cut and was within 24 hours of being euthanised.” “She chipped a bone and had a very nasty injury, so I’m just delighted to have her back, and to win makes it even more special. “I have to give great credit to
the vet who did an excellent job and the whole team to get her back in this form.” The in-form trainer-andjockey partnership narrowly missed out on registering an opening-day four-timer as their odds-on Katkoriko was narrowly run out of the spoils in the J&R Fuels winners-ofone by Western Wishes. The longtime leader put his experience to good use when kicking on entering the back straight and, despite the pair
getting close approaching the last, it was Patrick Ward’s eightyear-old who held on under Bertie Finn to prevail by a head. “It was great to get that. It feels a long time since he won his maiden at Tattersalls [in 2024] but we know he runs well fresh and he was tough today,” Ward said. “ We m a y t a k e h i m t o a hunters’ chase now. We have five horses in at the moment so it’s busy enough.” The Gallan ended last
season by posting two consecutive second-place efforts when under the care of Tu r l o u g h O ’ C o n n o r a n d , having switched yards during the summer, the six-year-old made a winning debut for Peter Flood’s Grange Stables in the James Kernohan & Sons older geldings’ maiden. Georgie Benson’s mount held off another stable debutant in Glendine Billy – formerly with Anthony Mullins – by half a length.
Aidan Fitzgerald enjoyed a successful start to the new campaign when his Sarah’s Sister dominated the seasonopening Noel Kelly Racing four-year-old mares’ maiden under Brian Dunleavy. A £22,000 purchase from last year’s Goffs Spring Store Sale in Doncaster, the Order Of St George mare is now set to be reoffered to the market after she defeated the Colin Bowetrained I’m Feeling It by 11 lengths on her debut.

New course joins the circuit in November as autumn schedule starts to gather pace A NEW course will be among the highlights of the 26-fixture autumn programme, which got under way with the traditional curtain-raiser at Toomebridge on Saturday. The Castletown-Geoghegan meeting which was also scheduled for the opening weekend was postponed due to a local bereavement but will now take place this Saturday. That postponement contributed to a quiet start to the new campaign, with just 32 runners at the Mid Antrim fixture. It is hoped that figure will increase in the coming weeks, particularly as the northern region’s autumn programme is heavily concentrated towards the start of the season. The Route Hunt stages its autumn fixture at Portrush this Saturday before the East Antrim follows at Loughanmore seven days later. As a result, three of the north’s four pre-Christmas fixtures will take place on consecutive weekends at the beginning of the campaign, a scheduling issue which remains a source of frustration for handlers in the region. Further south, a new course for the West Waterford fixture will be unveiled at Kilphilbeen, near Ballynoe, on Saturday,
“My brother Barry used to train on the track and if he was still training we would have gone for a bumper, but when he didn’t have the licence I had to run her in a point-to-point,” Fitzgerald said. “I think she’s very good, and has an excellent pedigree. I own her with Colin Bowe. I have had a few agents in my yard the last few weeks and I have put her to all of them and now she has the result to back it up.”
November 21, while Ballygogue House will stage its first autumn meeting when the Laois Foxhounds return to the venue a week later. Ballygogue House was introduced to the calendar in February and will now host its second fixture of the year as the Laois Foxhounds continue to establish a new home for their point- to-point.
Weekend to remember for McParlan No e l Mc Pa r l a n e n j oy e d a particularly productive 24 h ou r s a c ro s s t h e o p e n i ng weekend. Before the new point-topoint season began at Toomebridge, the Down rider travelled to Hexham, Northumberland, for two rides on horses trained by his father, Sean. Drumlee Myth, who began his career point-to-pointing for the father-and-son team, registered his second success of the y e a r i n H e x h a m’s n o v i c e handicap hurdle, having won at Cartmel in July. A double for the pair was narrowly denied when Deadheat surrendered the lead on the run-in of the 3m handicap chase. McParlan’s return to the
w i n n e r ’s e n c l o s u r e w a s delayed only briefly as he was the rider to follow at Toomebridge the following afternoon. T h e f o u r- t i m e n o r t h e r n c ha m p i o n b e ga n t h e n e w campaign in great fashion by partnering three winners from four rides. His only defeat came by just a head. All three winners were trained by his chief supporter, Ger Quinn, and followed the double which the pair recorded at the course’s spring fixture. Those results give McParlan an 8 3 p e r c e nt s t r i k e - rat e at Toomebridge since May. His latest treble also moved him alongside Derek O’Connor as the joint-leading rider at the course.
Dunleavy teams up with Fitzgerald to good effect Brian Dunleavy reached a personal landmark at Toomebridge when partnering the Aidan Fitzgerald-trained Sarah’s Sister to victory in the opening race of the season, bringing up his 50th point-topoint winner. It was the first time the Dungourney native had ridden for the Borris handler, but the debut success of the Order Of St George mare could mark the beginning of a more regular association. Troy Walsh has ridden the majority of runners from the Cobajay Stables operation in recent seasons. However, the Kilkenny rider moved across the Irish Sea during the summer to join Olly Murphy, potentially opening up further opportunities with Fitzgerald. Walsh has already made a successful start in Britain, riding a Worcester winner in August on his first ride for his new boss. He did so while still r iding as an amateur, but during the off-season he, along with Josh Halford, Evan Nugent and Ross Sugrue, were among the point-to-point regulars last season who made the switch to the paid ranks. They will be hoping to make a similar impact to Alan O ’S u l l i v a n i n t h e m o nt h s ahead. The Cork rider turned conditional ahead of the final month of last season and he already occupies eighth position in the jockeys’ standings under rules, with only Darragh O’Keeffe, Dan King and Philip Enright having secured more rides. ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
