Colin’s fast start puts him right back in the reckoning for title

O

NLY three weeks into the season and it is already clear that Colin Bowe is gearing up to reclaim the handlers’ title captured by Sam Curling with a fabulous 49 wins last season. Colin saddled five winners across two of the three weekend fixtures. Normal service has resumed. Outright champion on 12 occasions since 2010 and joint-champion with Donnchadh Doyle once, Colin shared third with Stuart Crawford on 19 winners last season, one behind the now-retired Pat Doyle. In four of the five previous seasons, Colin beat the 40-mark, so his 2025-26 campaign was definitely untypical. There was an indication the stable was getting into the swing of things when three runners at Loughanmore on Saturday yielded two seconds and a fourth. Everything clicked into place on Sunday when Bertie Finn rode a treble for the team at Umma House while, over at Tinahely, Barry O’Neill rode a double for Colin after taking a fall at the first in the opener. Bertie kicked off on Sunset Carousel in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The son of Kew Gardens showed ability in two starts last season. He was second at Castlelands first time out and was booked for second behind my mount, Night League, when falling two out at Ballysteen in April. Jonathan Fogarty sold Night League for €320,000 at the Goffs Punchestown Sale. Sunset Carousel jumped well on Sunday and quickened away from the second-last to win easily after making all the running. Bertie had to work harder on Captain’s Song who scored by a neck from the Fogarty runner Governor Max. The treble was brought up by Supreme Walk, a six-year-old who missed all of last season. The fact that he was able to overcome such an absence adds to the impression that the stable is well on the way to leaving last season’s experience behind. That also applies to Bertie, an important member of the Bowe team and a talented rider who finds time to ride out for Eamonn Doyle and Rob James while keeping his hurling career going. One of the leading under-21 riders between 2022 and the season before last, Bertie had a lean 2025-26

Captain’s Song and Bertie Finn keep the Colin Bowe show on the road at Umma House

season, coinciding with the stable’s slump. This treble should give him a platform for a successful campaign. Competition is tough and it is not easy for a young rider to secure mounts in four- and five-year-old maidens, the sport’s shop window. As Barry’s understudy, he should get plenty of opportunities on racedays when Colin has runners at multiple meetings.

Ger Quinn off to a great start and another title contender

While Colin has set the pace among Wexford trainers, Ger Quinn is making a good start to the season in the north. He saddled three winners and a second at Toomebridge on the opening day, won the open race at Portrush on the second weekend and added two wins and two seconds with his four runners at Loughanmore on Saturday. Dara McGill shared in the double, initiated in the four-year-old mares’

maiden by Wee Anna, a daughter of Milan out of a sister to Ballyburn, the Willie Mullins-trained staying hurdler who is unfortunately sidelined having picked up an injury after finishing second to Home By The Lee in the Stayers’ Hurdle. Ballyburn made a winning debut for the Wilson Dennison team at the Loughanmore fixture four years ago. Wee Anna comes from a family with a lot going for it, since her unraced dam, Gold Moon, by Flemensfirth, is also a sister to highclass handicap chasers Noble Endeavor and Minella Paddy, and a half-sister to Churchfield Sunset, winner of a Listed bumper. Ger’s second Loughanmore winner was Katkoriko who took the winnersof-two. This Cokoriko gelding was a runaway winner of a maiden at Kirkistown the season before last. He was off for a year and a half before finishing second at Toomebridge at the beginning of the month and has

renewed the promise he showed as a four-year-old. Pat Turley’s Jet Away gelding I Told Him That looked a good prospect in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The Crawford brothers, Ross and Stuart, each had a winner, making it a good day for the northern stables. The only successful southern raider was the Brian Lawless-trained mare Nellies Last Hope.

Make a note of four-year-old Redacresmiriam

We have seen several good performances by four-year-olds in the early stages of the season. In that group, I would count the Order Of St George filly Redacresmiriam, who won the four-year-old mares’ maiden at Umma House for Mick Goff. Ridden close to the pace by Mick’s son Harry, she travelled strongly and was in control a long way from the finish. The win pays tribute to the

potential of Royal Resource who carried the Hill family’s Dawn Run colours to beat Redacresmiriam in style at Monksgrange last March. She was sold for £290,000 at the Goffs Aintree Sale and is now with Nicky Henderson. Redacresmiriam is a half-sister to Red Acres Max who won for the Goff stable at Dromahane last November and was a bumper winner on his second start for Jamie Snowden last winter. Right Jack, a Jet Away gelding, gave Denis Murphy and Shane Cotter a first winner of the season in the fouryear-old maiden at Tinahely. Expect to see more from the top Wexford yards next weekend when Peppards Castle stages the county’s first meeting of the autumn. There is also action at Curraghmore in neighbouring Waterford. The inform northern contingent could make its presence felt at the Meath & Tara meeting at Tattersalls.

IN FOCUS

Great horses, great friends and a bit of success along the way. What more can you ask for? Former champion rider Maxine O’Sullivan looks back at her career and ahead to an exciting future

A

LOT has happened in the last few months, with retiring, getting married and the plans for Coolcullen. It wasn’t exactly planned for everything to happen so close together but it’s exciting. Retirement had been in my mind for a good while. Around the time of my cousin Michael’s fall I started stepping back from point-to-pointing. I’d had a lot of injuries and felt it was time. I was trying to ride just for enjoyment but soon realised there wasn’t much enjoyment when I wasn’t being competitive or aiming for titles. For the last six months I was hoping I’d have a winner. I decided to wait until the end of the season, when we would renew our licences, and thankfully Dream On Baby, trained by Emmet [Mullins,

her husband] won at Tramore the week before. It couldn’t have worked out better. I’ve always enjoyed Tramore and the mare’s owners are a West Cork syndicate I know. To finish with a winner for Emmet was brilliant. My first winner, The Merry Mason at Knockanard, was for my father, so that was a lovely way to bookend it. I’m very content. I was absolutely ready, and towards the end I was getting as much enjoyment from my cousin Alan’s success, Emmet’s success or my friends’ success. In my mind, I was already moving on. The only time I miss it is when I’m riding a nice horse at home. I used to love thinking that someday I might get to ride that horse in a race. Those are the moments I miss most. My mind was always busy when I was riding. I was trying hard, working hard, and trying to have a normal life with family and friends was difficult. I loved it for years but there comes a time when it gets very hard. I always wanted to ride, specifically for my father. I grew up watching my uncle William and the other jockeys

riding for him and wanting to do that myself. Helping with the horses at home and riding them in races was what I loved. Riding nice horses, selling them and doing it together were the best days for me. Of my seven ladies’ championships, 2019 gave me the greatest satisfaction. Susie Doyle and I were having a good go at it and it came down to the final weekend at Kinsale and Ballingarry. I had two winners at Kinsale and we were level going into the Monday. Michael Winters, who was local to us and always very kind to me, gave me the ride on his mare in the last race at Ballingarry. I won and that decided the title. My cousin Michael won the under-21 title that season too, so for the two of us to do it together was very special. Corbetts Cross was a huge favourite. We bought him as a foal, so we’d had him all along, and I won a point-to-point, a

bumper and a hurdle on him. Paul Byrne bought him, and he moved to Emmet’s, then soon afterwards I moved there too. It was lovely that our paths stayed together. It Came To Pass was another wonderful horse. He was nervous and quirky, but had great character and personality, was very kind and gave his all. He could bring you back down to earth too. I think I fell off him at the first as many times as we won. Winning the Foxhunter at Cheltenham for my father was everything you dream about growing up. With my uncle William having won it on Lovely Citizen too, it was an unbelievable family achievement. I still can’t really believe it happened. Working with family could be difficult sometimes. It was hard to draw a line between work and family, and when Michael, Alan and my brother Eoin were riding, we were all competing for the rides. It could be hard to juggle.

The injuries never bothered me. I enjoyed coming back and always felt I returned better and more focused. I was lucky with opportunities. There were lots of smaller point-to-point trainers around home. Their horses were competitive. People are very good at supporting women, but pointto-pointing has become so competitive that getting started is harder for anyone now. I love working at the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (Race), helping with the junior academy during the school breaks. The children use the simulator, do fitness work and ride the racehorses. Let’s hope it encourages them to get involved, whether through riding, owning or simply going racing. I’m in Emmet’s yard every day. I like mornings and try to get in early, do the feeds and muck out, find out what he has planned and get things rolling. We usually have four or five lots each morning. I love riding, and I’ll ride out for as long as I can. I’m a self-appointed assistant! I’m hands-on in the yard, while Emmet sorts out a million other things, does the planning and goes racing. It

works. We don’t spend all day in each other’s faces. We got married in Killarney on August 28. It went very quickly, just like Cheltenham. Our family and friends enjoyed it, which was the main thing. We had a two-day honeymoon in Kenmare, then it was straight into the yearling sales. I can switch off from racing but I have to go away to do it. My mum and grandmother are in Limerick, and I love spending time with them. Going home to Cork, you’re still surrounded by horses. Spending time away with family and friends gives me a proper chance to switch off. Emmet has bought a lot of yearlings so we need somewhere to put them. I hope we’ll be in Coolcullen after Christmas. We’ll take it step by step. I love point-topointing and hope I’ll always have some involvement. There are probably a hundred things I’d have done differently but, if I’d known 20 years ago what I’d achieve, I’d have been very happy. I love the point-to-point community. Great horses, great friends and a bit of success along the way. What more can you ask for? Maxine O’Sullivan was talking to Debbie McCrellis

Bowe puts last term’s frustrations behind him COLIN BOWE will have been a relieved man as he made the journey home from Umma House on Sunday following a particularly productive day. The Milestone Stables proprietor was on hand to see his horses win half of the six races at the Westmeath venue, with that treble supplemented by two victories at the day’s other fixture at Tinahely. Bowe has dominated the pointing ranks for well over a decade. Crowned champion for the first time in 2010, he proved unbeatable from 2016 to 2025, securing ten successive championships. That sequence came to an end last season, when a frustrating campaign saw him saddle just 19 winners, a significant drop from the 42 he had recorded 12 months earlier. No trainer, irrespective of previous glory, is immune to a bout of sickness affecting the form of their runners. Indeed,

Bowe was far from alone in f ac ing that c hall e ng e la st spring, when several handlers encountered difficulties in keeping their horses healthy and performing to their best. When operating with the number of horses that Bowe does and the considerable costs that inevitably accompany a stable of that scale, such a prolonged downturn must have been testing. That will have made Sunday’s five-timer even more satisfying, while giving encouragement that last season’s difficulties have been firmly left behind.

I Told Him That and Declan Lavery score for Paddy Turley at Loughanmore

Max Attack’s US success can be traced to Doyle

Alan Doyle may have saddled his first runner as a trainer only in April and, while he remains in search of a breakthrough success after a handful of runners last spring, the Wexford man still had plenty to celebrate last weekend.

His Ballycrystal yard can lay claim to producing a blacktype winner after Max Attack struck in the United States. The four-year-old landed the $75,000 Listed Harry E Harris Hurdle for Todd McKenna on

the high-profile American National card at Far Hills less than six months after making the second of two appearances between the flags for Doyle. The Maxios gelding had finished third in an auction

maiden at Loughanmore on his debut before chasing home the exciting prospect Night League at Ballysteen in April, albeit at a considerable distance. Following that effort, Doyle sent the bay to the Goffs UK Spring Sale. Having left the ring unsold, he was subsequently purchased privately for £20,000 by McKenna and bloodstock agent Hamish Macauley. With Saturday’s race carrying a first prize of $45,000, that has proved to be a shrewd piece of business by McKenna, who completed a Far Hills double with recent recruits from the Irish point-to-point fields. The Pennsylvania-based trainer also paid £20,000 for I Found My Jet after the Jet Away gelding had finished third in a five-year-old geldings’ maiden

at Lisronagh for Nicky Stokes. He earned $38,400 when winning a maiden hurdle on the same card, beginning a productive 24 hours for Stokes, who teamed up with his daughter Jessica to win the qualified riders’ handicap hurdle at Limerick on Sunday.

The only way is north

No r t h e r n - b a s e d ha n d l e r s enjoyed a productive time at Loughanmore on Saturday, coming within one race of completing a clean sweep of the six-race card. With the bulk of the prizes remaining close to home it highlighted the growing strength of leading yards in the locality, with Ger Quinn, Paddy Tu r l e y a n d t h e C r a w f o r d brothers, Stuart and Ross, saddling winners. Coming at one of the north’s principal venues, it was a day that could scarcely have gone better for the local contingent.

WEEKEND REPORTS

EAST ANTRIM AT LOUGHANMORE SATURDAY

Easy for McGill with friends like Wee Anna

LEADING owner Philip McBurney was not on hand to witness the continued strong start to the season of his Caherty Stables as he was joined by his trainer Ger Quinn and their regular rider Noel McParlan on a trip to attend the American National. In their absence, Dara McGill proved an able substitute for McParlan as he initiated a stable double on Wee Anna in the Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale 4yo mares’ maiden. A €58,000 purchase by Ian Fe r g u s o n – w h o h a d a l s o b o u g h t h e r h a l f - b r o t h e r, four-time Grade 1 w inner Ballyburn – the Milan mare came from off the pace on her debut to score by seven lengths. “She’s been telling them at home she has a lot of potential and should shape into a nice bumper and hurdles filly,” Ferguson said. “Knowing Philip, he will send her to an upcoming sale. She’s done her job today and that’s the main thing.” The Maghera rider had an

even easier time when bringing up his double on Katkoriko in the winners-of-two. Dominating from the front, the odds-on favourite justified his short price when making amends for a narrow defeat at Toomebridge a fortnight ago, as he returned 12 lengths clear of Portrush scorer Sutherland. McGill was not the only one to leave the Antrim track with a d o u b l e a s D e c l a n L av e r y combined with regular ally Paddy Turley to land the fouryear-old geldings’ maiden with I Told Him That and rode Chapter ‘N’ Verse to victory in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden. The four-and-a-half-length success of I Told Him That over Back In Stock was even sweeter for the rider as he was sporting his own two-tone blue silks in

guiding the Jet Away gelding to victory on his second start. “ H e l o v e d t h e g r o u n d ,” Lavery said. “We ran him last year and probably shouldn’t have. He just wasn’t right but he was a totally different horse there. He jumped class the whole way around. He will end up a proper staying horse.” It was Ross Crawford who supplied the concluding leg of the Laver y double when Chapter ‘N’ Verse made a winning return to action. Absent 18 months since making a promising career start when third to last season’s Cheltenham Champion Bumper favourite Love Sign D’Aunou at the same venue, the Poet’s Word gelding had to sweep wide around the home bend. However, once getting on terms, he showed a likeable attitude to outbattle Glenhead by half a length. “He’s a lovely horse, but he’s quite big with a bit of a frame and he’s taken time to come to himself,” Crawford said. “ He wa s t h i rd he re as a

four-year-old, and the form of that race has worked out well.” Crawford’s brother Stuart also got on the scoreboard when sending out Ballyedward in the older geldings’ maiden. Fourth over hurdles at Down

Royal in March, the Harzand gelding had twice been placed at Loughanmore at the start of his career, and the return to pointing saw Stephen Connor guide him to a two-length defeat of Firstupbestdressed.

Nellies makes her mark

A switch to front-running tactics did the trick for Nellies Last Hope as she made most of the running in the five-year-oldand-upwards mares’ maiden. Partnered by her handler,

My Life Be Like returns with statement of intent THE name My Life Be Like went in plenty of notebooks last Christmas when he got within two and a half lengths of Its On The Line in the St Stephen’s Day Hunter Chase at Down Royal. The six-year-old failed to back that up when disappointing at Clonmel in his only other run last season but that now looks to have been a temporary blip as he got his career back on track by beating the useful track performer Jeroboam Machin in the Anthony Darcy Sands Open w h i c h e x c l u d e d p re v i o u s Graded winners. David Christie’s Getaway gelding could now be aimed at next month’s hunter chase at Fairyhouse after Barry O’Neill steered him to a ten-length win. “He was disappointing at Clonmel because he’s one of the best young horses I have,” Christie said.

With age on his side, My Life Be Like could develop into a leader in this sphere after a winning start in open company

“My horses were all sick around that time, though, and he had a wee stress fracture in his hip. That’s why he’s been out so long. “We could have had him back towards the end of the season but because he’s such a good horse we left him off to strengthen up. He’s a proper, big horse.” That completed a successful day at the office for O’Neill, as he had started a treble when Talladega made a winning return to pointing in the fiveyear-old mares’ maiden. The grey daughter of Jukebox

Ju r y h a d r u n re s p e c t a b l y without making the frame in three efforts over hurdles in the summer and that experience stood to her as she defeated Buddy And Me by two lengths. That was one of two victories on the card for Colin Bowe as his Dark Til Daylight improved on his well-beaten third at the same Wicklow venue in February by outbattling Secret Order by three-quarters of a length. “He improved a lot from last year,” Brendan Walsh, assistant trainer to Bowe, said. “He was a big, weak horse and has taken plenty of time. He enjoyed being out in front today, enjoyed the ground and jumped like a buck. “Barry said he just went to sleep a bit going to the last and that he won a bit snug.” Secret Order’s handler, Denis Murphy, rarely leaves Fairwood

Park without a winner and Right Jack continued that trend when he made a winning debut in the four-year-old maiden. A €30,000 Arkle Sale purchase, the Shane Cotterridden Jet Away gelding traveelled strongly to h hit the front at thee s e c o n d - la st b e f o r e quickening two and a half lengths clear of the more experie n c e d Redshire Road d. “He was wo orking terribly well lastt season and we did enter him at one stage,” Murphy said. “He gave himself a nick schooling and had a few stitches, so he was gone for the season. Maybe it was all for

luck though, because he’s a big horse and might have needed that bit of time.”

powered 25 lengths clear of Beacon Storm to give Jonathan Fitzgerald his first success of the campaign with his first runner. “This mare gave me my first winner at Ballycahane and my sister Leanne owns her,” Pratt said. “Seventy Eight Team unseated at the second-last and I might have been a bit lucky.” It was the two market principals who fought out the finish of the older geldings’ maiden for novice riders. I’m Over It made a belated winning debut at the age of six when he prevailed for Leon Cullen and Robert Tector, defeating Elusive Gale by a widening seven lengths. “I hadn’t even worked him on grass,” Tector said. “We just said we’d tip around here and learn a bit about him. It’s job done now anyway and he’ll go for a winners’ race all being well.”

worked like she’s well capable of winning one. “She was good and tough there and she wanted to win. If she doesn’t stay point-topointing, John could run her on the track.”

O’Connor’s confidence restored as Magic Tricks conjures up game win PAURICK O’CONNOR cut the figure of a relieved man as he welcomed Magic Tricks back into the winner’s enclosure after a hard-fought victory in the T Murray and Sons Open for novice riders. The Galwayman admitted that he struggled to keep his horses healthy last season and, after that frustrating campaign, he gained immense satisfaction as Billy Coonan excelled in the saddle aboard the ten-yearold to fend off Yewtree Hill by a head in a thrilling finish. “Nicole Lockhead Anderson was meant to ride him but she had to ride on the track for Sam Curling,” O’Connor said. “He’ll run in a couple of weeks and probably go for a ladies’ open. He’s owned by Claire McMahon, the head girl in the yard.” Colin Bowe sent out five winners on the day, including a treble at Umma House. Sunset Carousel was first to strike for the former champion trainer when dominating the four-year-old geldings’ maiden from the front. A penultimate-fence faller at Ballysteen when sitting second to the subsequent €320,000 seller Night League, the Kew Gardens gelding enhanced his reputation by easily defeating Ocean Ranger by six lengths. “He’s a game horse and it’s hard to beat a King’s Theatre mare,” Bowe said. Bertie Finn was also in the saddle as Captain’s Song made it a Milestone Stables double in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden. Returning to the Westmeath course where he had been beaten only just over four lengths on his debut a year ago, the Ocovango gelding left a disappointing effort at Borris House behind him as he outbattled the newcomer Governor Max by a neck. Supreme Walk had not been seen in competitive action for just under 18 months but Bowe’s patience was rewarded when the son of Walk In The Park belied his lack of recent action by claiming the older geldings’ maiden. Finn sent the six-year-old to t h e l e a d a p p ro a c h i n g t h e penultimate fence, from where he was always containing the recent Castletown Geoghegan runner-up Derby Rock to score by five lengths.

Redacresmiriam had form in the book after an eyecatching debut and she backed that up, converting her prominent position into an impressive success

Mick Goff continued his strong start to the season as he took the four-year-old mares’ maiden with Redacresmiriam. The Order Of St George mare brought the best form into the race, having finished second to Royal Response, who subsequently sold for £290,000 to

join Nicky Henderson, and that form was boosted when Harry Goff guided her to a two-length defeat of the Tullaherin third Superior Strength. “She went to Monksgrange last season and I couldn’t see her being beaten,” Goff said. “That mare is a star – that’s the only way to describe her. She’s got some ability; she was to be held up and come with a run but Harry said she was just jumping out of his hands and he couldn’t take her back any more. She’s the best I’ve had for a while.”

Aint Over Yet’s reward

Aint Over Yet had been beaten

32 lengths in the four-year-old mares’ maiden on the corres ponding card a year ago, but won the maiden for five-yearolds-and-older here. Despite not offering much promise in three subsequent efforts, Nigel Slevin’s Getaway bay took a big step forward as she defeated Miss Tipp by a head under David Doyle. “She’s hardy for her size but she doesn’t know she’s small,” Ju d i t h L o ng, w i f e o f t h e winning handler, said. “She could go back to the track for a bumper or a hurdle; maybe one of the EBF bonuses would be nice.”

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
