Program Notes for 6th-8th Grade Strings HEDWIG’S THEME (NOTES BY DECLAN OCHOA AND ERIN EDLUND) This piece is from the famous Harry Potter series and was composed by John Williams in 2001. John Williams has composed music in other movies such as: Jurassic Park 2, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, E.T, the theme from Superman, and the Imperial March from Star Wars. This song is about the magic and mystery of the wizard world. It is played when Harry Potter is entering the wizard world or Hogwarts from a summer, spring, or winter break. It’s a very magical piece, because it feels like you’re in the movie. The song has a happy and mysterious theme. The composer starts off the song as mesmerizing, and has some odd turns in the music. Towards the end it gets fast and then has a very surprising and sudden ending.
ADAGIETTO (NOTES BY STETSON ATWOOD, KATHLEEN BALCSIK, ALLISON FURMAN, AND MIMI RECTOR) Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 was composed between 1901 and 1902, and the movement we are playing (Adagietto) is in the key of F major and D minor. The original version of this piece is written for a full symphony orchestra, but we are playing a string orchestra arrangement. The tone of this piece is quite sad. It is played slowly and on the low strings of the violin and cello for a while. Towards the end it sounds like it is starting to lean towards the happier end of the spectrum. climax of the piece, which happens at the end when it reaches fortissimo (very loud). It ends at the softest dynamic of the piece.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (NOTES BY LILLY AYLWARD AND MADDIE FLEMING) We are playing “The Medallion Calls” from the 2003 movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” The composer also wrote many of the other songs in the movie, including “Blood Ritual” and “He’s A Pirate.” There are many sequels to the movie where the song is featured. The song is very fast and dark. There are different terms used to describe how we should be playing during the piece. For example, in the beginning, it says to play it majestically. It becomes suspenseful and heroic before becoming bouncy at some parts. It ends with quick, short notes.
SALLY GOODIN (NOTES BY LOUISA ENSOR, NICOLE MCMAHON, SOPHIA SCHMEGLAR, AND SALMA VARELA-VERA The song Sally Goodin is a collection of popular southern fiddle songs from the early 1900’s. The story behind Sally Goodin is that a man wanted to see Sally Goodin so badly that he gave all of his belongings away to see her. The form of the song is ABA. The A section, which is the beginning, starts loud and is lively and exciting, and in the B section we experiment with slides and shifting (where we play higher up on the instrument). The next A section is mostly like the beginning but it has a coda. The coda (the very end of a piece) is different than the rest of the song, because it stays mostly on the E string, and uses continuous fast notes until quickly traveling down to the G string for the last note.
