A School-Wide Mastery Approach M A S T E RY- B A S E D L E A R N I N G ( M B L ) In preschool – grade 8, mastery-based learning focuses on clearly defined learning goals (standards) and measures student progress based on how well those specific skills or concepts are mastered. It emphasizes ongoing assessment, feedback, and opportunities for improvement rather than relying solely on traditional grades or averages. Students focus on true mastery of a topic or skill, and teachers focus on teaching standards that every student must learn. Each lesson taught is connected to a standard, and learning targets along the way mark progress toward meeting the standard.

ASSESSING AND SCORING St. Benedict Prep uses proficiency scales to clearly define learning targets that communicate the knowledge and skills necessary for students to reach mastery for each priority standard. These scoring guides help students and parents understand the level of mastery they have achieved at any given time. • Exceeding (Score 4) indicates your child is going above and beyond grade-level expectations. • Proficient (Score 3) means your child has mastered the grade-level standard. • Progressing (Score 2) means your child is progressing but hasn’t yet mastered the skill. • Beginning (Score 1) shows that your child needs more support to understand the concept. Report cards reflect MBL scores (1–4) per standard or learning target. The scores on individual standards in each subject area will be averaged for one main score for that subject. SC

Lil’ Bengal Beats invites our emerging toddlers (and their grown-ups) to explore the magic of music. Our 30-minute weekly sessions focus on early social interaction and rhythmic movement.

BENGAL CUBS Designed as a bridge between home and classroom, this twice-weekly, two-hour program introduces school through active caregiver participation. Students engage in hands-on experiences that support early social-emotional and cognitive development in a nurturing, structured environment.

Our Preschool Experience During these formative years, the focus is on developmentally appropriate activities for young students. In preschool, a nurturing and fun environment allows for supervised play and content-based learning integral to the development of pre-literacy and pre-math skills. Students develop social, emotional, physical, and intellectual skills to arrive in kindergarten ready to learn.

Our Elementary School Experience K–Grade 3 Through small group instruction, hands-on learning, and individualized support, students develop strong foundations in literacy, math, and critical thinking. Research-based programs including MyView Literacy and enVision Mathematics help students build confidence in phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, and problem-solving at their own pace. Center-based exploration, collaborative activities, and real-world application support both academic growth and social-emotional development. With teacher guidance and personalized support, students grow into confident thinkers, communicators, and learners across Language Arts, Math, Religion, Science, and Social Studies.

A balanced literacy approach remains central to learning, with students reading at personalized levels while strengthening comprehension, writing, and communication skills through Reader’s Workshop, Writer’s Workshop, and Novel Studies. Research, collaboration, and presentation skills are further developed through integrated Science and Social Studies projects, helping students grow in independence, confidence, and critical thinking.

Our Middle School Experience Grades 6–8 Designed to foster independence, leadership, and academic growth, our middle school program combines a strong liberal arts foundation with technology-integrated learning, collaborative projects, and real-world problem solving. A unique trimester schedule allows students to explore subjects more deeply while strengthening critical thinking, communication, organization, and collaboration skills. As students mature academically and personally, they also continue to deepen their faith and spiritual formation through the study of Church history, Scripture, and the life and teachings of Jesus. Students are encouraged to live their faith through service, leadership, reflection, and meaningful involvement within both the school and the wider community. Recognizing the unique social and emotional needs of young adolescents, St. Benedict Prep offers intentional support through Advisory, Academic Lab, Bengal Prep, and the House System — detailed in the following pages. The Learning Experience A D V I S O RY The Advisory program provides an opportunity for students to meet in a smaller group setting focusing on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) needs. Topics are curated around adolescent needs which can include (but are not limited to): Time management, Goal setting, Stress management, Conflict resolution, Selfadvocacy, Self-esteem/confidence and Boundaries.

ACADEMIC LAB Our Academic Lab program, held daily, is an essential extension of classroom learning designed to support student growth and independence. The program rotates through three core components each week: Academic Lab: A structured study hall environment where students are encouraged to complete homework, seek clarification from teachers, and organize their academic responsibilities. It fosters selfmanagement and builds habits for long-term success. Literature Workshop: A reflective writing space where students respond to prompts in personal notebooks, connecting classroom texts to their own lives. These exercises promote introspection, empathy, and critical thinking. Math Lab: A hands-on extension of math class that deepens understanding of key concepts—from geometry and volume to linear equations and monomials. Math Lab helps students build confidence, mastery, and a genuine appreciation for mathematics by bridging theory with real-world relevance.

AGORA The Agora Program is a unique, week-long immersion experience designed to bring learning beyond the classroom and into the real world. The program provides middle school students with meaningful opportunities to explore history, culture, and community through carefully curated travel experiences. In preparation, students participate in a series of guided sessions throughout the year. These sessions are designed to build background knowledge, spark curiosity, foster teamwork, and develop essential travel and reflection skills. By the time they embark on their journey, students are equipped not only with practical readiness but also with a deeper understanding of the themes they will encounter. The program culminates with a week of travel in the spring.

B E N G A L P R E P, B E N G A L S K I L L S , A N D P R I N C I P L E D L E A D E R S H I P Classes are designed to support the whole child—academically, socially, spiritually, and through the development of executive functioning skills. Through these programs, students build confidence, character, and community. As part of Bengal Prep, 6th grade students get the foundation for the habits they need to be successful in middle school, such as learning styles, study skills and time management. They also learn how to be a good digital citizen by being aware of the benefits and drawbacks of the role of technology in their lives. Lastly, they consider the foundations of healthy relationships, communication, boundaries, and respect. These lessons help students navigate friendships and relationships with empathy and self-awareness. In our Bengal Skills classes, 7th grade students build on the skills and knowledge learned in Bengal Prep. Our students get more practice knowing themselves and how they learn best, to give them the skills to succeed beyond middle school. They focus on the future of technology and how to use it in an ethical way. We also give them the tools to build relationships and community with others using a lens of empathy and understanding. Our Principled Leadership class is actively studying, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey to guide the work with students. These habits—such as being proactive, setting goals, prioritizing, listening with empathy, and working collaboratively—are woven into our leadership practices and school culture. This course equips students with essential skills to strengthen their self-image, develop meaningful friendships, resist peer pressure, set and achieve personal goals, and foster positive relationships with their parents. It also introduces the basics of financial literacy, helping students prepare for the challenges of high school, and confidently navigate an increasingly complicated world.

HOUSE SYSTEM Upon entering middle school, students are placed into one of five saint-named houses: Boniface, Bede, Gregory, Hilda and Scholastica. Throughout the year, houses earn points by participating in academic challenges, service projects, athletic events, and community-building activities. Service, Academics, Sportsmanship, Faith, and Community are the 5-pillars of the house system.

Athletics | Teamwork in Action With year-round opportunities, our athletic program fosters teamwork, celebrates achievement, and builds respect for one another. Students can begin building confidence and school spirit as early as preschool, with opportunities to compete against other schools beginning in third grade as part of the Chicago Catholic Youth League (CCYL) and the IESA. You will feel the spirit of Bengal pride during our legendary student clap-outs, where the entire school lines the hallways and courtyard to cheer on our athletes with joy, honor, and sportsmanship. Rooted in Faith & Service Faith and service are part of everyday school life, helping students grow in kindness, compassion, character, and respect for others. Whether students are assisting at the altar or lifting their voices in song from the pews, our students embody leadership, reverence, and gratitude. Teachers join in worship, some serving as Eucharistic Ministers, modeling devotion, and unity in Christ. Early Dismissal: Every Tuesday at 2:00 PM for grades PK-5, 2:10 PM for grades 6–8. This time is allocated for teacher professional development. Extended Care: Available for grades PK–8 (7:00 AM-7:40 AM, Dismissal to 6:00 PM). Preschool registration is set at the beginning of the year, while K–8th grade families are asked to register on a weekly basis. Charges are made in FACTS. After-School Programs: Each Trimester, students can explore a variety of programs and clubs with 30+ unique offerings available throughout the year. Lunch: Our provider for a nutritious hot lunch is HandCut Foods. Kindergarten through 8th grade students may also pack lunch from home. Uniform: Uniforms may be purchased through Lands’ End or Tommy Hilfiger, with gently used uniform options also available through the HSA Spirit Shop. Safety: Our school campus is self-contained on one city block and uses the BluePoint alert system and security cameras throughout its premises. Communication: At a minimum, teachers provide weekly classroom updates via email, while our Head of School shares a school-wide Thursday blog update via The Buzz. HSA sends a weekly email for upcoming events, celebrations, and social news. Many classroom communities also use WhatsApp groups to help families stay informed, connected, and engaged throughout the year. Day-off camps for Kindergarten and above are offered throughout the year when school is closed for professional development or parent teacher conferences.

Family Participation

Meaningful Ways for Families to Participate Family involvement is a valued part of our school community, with opportunities for caregivers to participate in ways that fit their interests, schedules, and availability — from field trips, grade reps, and classroom celebrations to leadership roles through the Home & School Association (HSA), Advisory Board, or Athletic Board. To ensure a safe environment, all volunteers must complete VIRTUS training.

Charlie Maida – SBPS ’23 Charlie Maida is studying at St. Ignatius College Prep and is a member of the Ethics Club. He has excelled academically and now is a member of the National Honor Society. For excellence in the study of Classical Latin, Charlie was recently awarded the Magna Cum Laude Award from the National Latin Honor Society. Also an avid runner, Charlie is on both the Cross Country and Track teams. He won the Evan Clark Award for Excellence in Cross Country in 2024.

Amara Patras – SBPS ‘22 and Northside College Prep ‘26 is attending the University of South Carolina with the #1 International Business program in the country. She wants to go into International business and eventually diplomacy for the government.

Skylar Jones – SBPS ‘19 and Whitney Young ‘23 is a standout basketball player currently at Baylor University as a forward and played for the NCAAW Louisville Cardinals until 2026.

Brady Vacek – SBPS ‘22 and St. Ignatius College Prep ‘26 is attending the University of North Dakota studying commercial aviation with plans to fly for one of the commercial airlines in the United States.

Tiernan Ryan – SBPS ‘21 and St. Ignatius College Prep ‘25. Tiernan spent time in Canada to pursue his dream of playing professional hockey. He played forward for the Nipawin Hawks, a junior hockey team based in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. In fall of 2026, Tiernan will be studying at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Andrew Annulis – SBPS ’13 Walter Payton College Prep ‘17, Tulane University ‘21, is a Civil Engineer with multiple years of design experience in land development. As a project engineer he has been involved with the design of various developments using Civil3D for Atwell, LLC.

A Look Back & a Look Forward

Honoring our past. Looking forward to the future. Founded in 1902, St. Benedict Preparatory School began as a small parish school built by local Catholic families seeking a faith-based education closer to home for their children. At the time, much of Chicago’s North Center neighborhood was still farmland, and families traveled long distances to attend Catholic school. What began as a modest church, and school quickly grew into a thriving educational community rooted in faith, academic excellence, and strong family connection. In 1950, St. Benedict Prep expanded to include a high school program, serving students from Preschool through 12th grade for nearly 70 years. Following the closing of the high school division in 2019, the school renewed its focus entirely on Preschool through 8th grade education — continuing its commitment to forming students academically, spiritually, and personally during their most foundational years.

LOOKING AHEAD As we look toward the next 125 years, St. Benedict Prep remains committed to thoughtfully evolving alongside the needs of students and families while staying firmly rooted in the Catholic faith and academic excellence that have guided our community since 1902. While educational practices will continue to grow and change, our Christ-centered mission, strong moral foundation, and dedication to forming the whole child will remain constant. The strength of our future is supported by a stable foundation, including responsible financial stewardship and strong enrollment that reflect the trust families place in our school.
