Program Notes for 6th-8th Grade Band STARSPLITTER FANFARE (NOTES BY PARKER CASEY) Composed by Brian Balmages, Starsplitter Fanfare is inspired by the supernova phenomenon. Supernovae are stellar explosions that occur about every 50 years. Supernovae can be so bright they can outshine a whole galaxy for weeks or even months before washing out.
BE STILL, MY SOUL (NOTES BY MADDIE LITHERLAND): Be Still, My Soul was composed by Jean Sibelius with lyrics written by Katherine von Schlegel. It was originally written in German and was translated by Jane L. Borthwick. The version of Be Still, My Soul we are playing tonight is arranged by Robert W. Smith. For this piece he dedicated it to his mother because they both shared a great love for hymns. Smith is famously known for his concert band arrangement worldwide. This song has a peaceful, soothing sound that seems like you’re dreaming. Hope you all enjoy our rendition of Be Still, My Soul.
VIVA LA VIDA (NOTES BY HALEY RIECKELMAN): Viva La Vida is a very good and popular song. This song is written by Coldplay. This song was released on May 25th 2008.Viva La Vida won a Grammy Award for Best Song of the Year in 2009. Coldplay played this song during Super Bowl 50. It has biblical and historical references in the lyrics. The song title Viva La Vida means long live life. The genre of the song is Continued on inside back cover>>

RUMPELSTILTSKIN (NOTES BY GAVIN AUER): Rumpelstiltskin is a fairytale written by the German “Grimm Brothers.” In this piece, you can hear the story of Rumpelstiltskin not verbally, but musically. If you listen carefully, you can hear the different pieces of the puzzle that give the music and the story the happiness it truly was meant to have. A beautiful story deserves some beautiful music. Some famous pieces to look out for in this song are Grieg’s “Morning Mood,” Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus” and Brahm’s “lullaby”.
