Since last summer, director Alexandra Bello and producer Joseph P. Johnson have been working on a documentary pilot called ?Every 58 Hours? in South Florida. It puts a spotlight on law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty ? one every 58 hours somewhere in the United States. This pilot will include reenactments and interviews, including an interview with Johnson, who knows only too well about the subject matter. Being a retired New York police officer, he has seen far too many fallen officers, including Tommy Ruotolo, one of the officers whose death is reenacted in the pilot. Johnson worked in the South Bronx with Ruotolo and says his ?end of watch? will stay with him for the rest of his life. The shootout that ended Ruotolo's life was reenacted in Coral Springs, FL at the end of January. The gas station looked similar to the real one and they utilized a police car and wardrobe from the 80s to fit the time period. Jamil Malik, who played Ruotolo, even had a moustache application to fit the character. The resulting scene was so realistic that Johnson found it too emotional to see. ?At the time it came to shoot the kill scene, I had to walk away,? he said. He added, ?Tommy was hired in January 1981 six months before me. When I was assigned to the 41, he had already been there. He was a very nice guy, very dry humor and very intelligent. We rode together on a number of occasions, but were not actual partners. He was a week away from being transferred off the mean streets of the South Bronx when he was murdered.? The gunshots during the reenactment attracted locals who called 911. It also brought out news media to cover the filming. But the director predicts there will be a total of 12 days of shooting. They intend to send it to film festivals and seek out 1 network interest once it is complete.

M ar ch 2015 The timing of the pilot could not be more crucial with stories in the news of police officers being harassed and shot in New York and elsewhere after stories of alleged police brutality. ?We, the police, have never been more villianized by the public and the press, including elected politicians. Eveybody goes wild when a celebrity dies from self indulgence and the outpouring of sympathy is unbelievable, but when a police officer is murdered or dies while doing his job, the outpouring of anti-cop sentiment is unbelievable,? said Johnson, who added, ?the show is meant to enlighten and educate the public, and change the perception that we are nothing but racist murderers who go out with intention of murdering people. I NDEPENDENT STREAK M AGAZI NE VOL 2, #3 sons, daughters, sisters, brothers and are humans with feelings. We get hurt; we bleed and we die, leaving a rift in our families and in society as a whole.? Bello said, ?I hope that, after being exposed to this information, people change their perspective about law enforcement officers in general and share it with their friends.? She added that it took three months to find the right cast for the pilot and has been lucky to find some great locations. The most challenging part was funding. "The most challenging part has been getting people to donate. We calculated that if half of our Facebook friends would be kind enough to donate $5 dollars, we would raise the necessary amount to make this happen; but people have been very indifferent to our efforts. However, we have found other people that are not exactly friends, who, perhaps are close to the topic and have donated much more than $5 dollars. Joseph P. Johnson has done a magnificent job following up with New York retired cops, old co-workers, old friends and other people to find the funding we have gathered so far.? When asked how filming this was different from other films she has made, she said, ?This was just as scripted as other films. We scripted the questions and shot list for each interview. We also scripted the blocking and dialogue for the reenactments, as well as the shot list, and we are in the process of writing the script for the narrator to record.? Johnson wanted to make sure that Gaetano Fasulo was brought in as director of photography on the project after seeing his award-winning film ?Bonk.? Gabriel Kipling Tyner was brought on as Assistant Director and Flor Arriaga did camera work as well. Chazz Pal mint er i Tal k s " A Bronx Tal e" & more By Rachel Galvin Actor/ playwright Chazz Palminteri knows what it is to work independently. He has been touring his one-man show since 2007. He was just in South Florida on Feb. 26 performing ?A Bronx Tale? and he will be back to sunny South Florida on March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center For the Arts (2855 Coral Springs Dr., Coral Springs, FL) to perform it again. These are just a few stops on his tour. You may have seen the 1993 ?A Bronx Tale? movie, directed by Robert De Niro, telling a tale of a father who becomes worried when a local gangster, Sonny, befriends his son Cologero in the Bronx in the 1960s. Palminteri, born Cologero, who plays Sonny in the movie, plays all 18 characters in his play without props or a costume change. Palminteri wanted to be an actor since he was 10 or 11 years old. He started studying drama, with Lee Strasberg and the Actor's Studio. He went on to make over 50 films, including ?Bullets Over Broadway,? ?The Usual Suspects? and ?A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints,? which he lists as some of his favorites, among others. But, since 2007, he has also

been touring with his show. He started performing off-Broadway while he was a singer in his own band. Later, he went out to Los Angeles and his show became a hot commodity. He was offered $1 million to sell it, but, even though he only had $200 in his pocket, he refused. He knew he had to write the screenplay and be in it. ?A lot of people talk about success,? he said. ?You just have to do it.? Asked how he felt about giving an element of control over to De Niro, he said, ?I knew it was in good hands.? He said when it comes to directors, he prefers ?a director who allows actors to try things and collaborate in a role.? His advice for actors: ?Get used to hearing the word 'no.' If you can't handle getting rejected ... it can wear you out.? As for auditioning, he suggests relaxing, knowing your lines and listening to the other actor. ?[When getting into character], I like to learn my lines, feel comfortable off script. I work from inside out. I figure out who the person is in this role. Then, I start dressing like him, looking like him,? he said. He added about 'A Bronx Tale,' ?My show is a great show. In Broadway, there was a line of people waiting to see it again. The characters are all archetypes. Alfred Hitchcock once said, '... a movie can make you laugh, make you cry, scare you ? if you do two out of three, you are doing really good. [With the show], I do all three. If you loved the movie, you will love the show even more.? Asked what he hopes people will walk away with after seeing the show, he said, ?I hope they go home and hug their kids [and learn] don't waste your life. Seize the day. My father said the saddest thing in life is wasted talent.? He added, ?A lot of times, [the media] talks about the mafia. This is not about the mafia. This is about the butcher, the baker, about the working man, people like my dad, who was a bus driver, the fabric of the Italian American community.? The 20th Annual Student Showcase of Films The 20th Annual Student Showcase of Films for Florida high schools and colleges is ajuried competition that recognizes outstanding film students by presenting more than $10,500 in scholarships and awards in the following categories: Feature/ Shorts, Documentary, Animation, Commercial/ PSA, Environmental PSA (NEW), Music Video, Screenwriting, Poster and an Audience Award. Honoring the legacy of Burt Reynolds, the festival also awards a scholarship bearing his name and a Sara Fuller Scholarship through Film Florida. Seen on the Soaps Danny Dasent South Florida local turned LA resident Danny Dasent has received quite a lot of attention lately after his appearance on "General Hospital." He was able to catch himself a recurring role on the soap courtesy of Mark Teschner Casting. On set, he calls his character Howard Billings, but on the call sheet, he says, it is just Orderly # 1. And this was not just a featured role. He actually had lines in his second appearance on Feb. 27; but, he is unsure what the future holds for Mr. Billings the Orderly. "It is up to the network to use me if they go back to Shadybrook Instution, where my character works," he said. While still in South Florida, Dasent worked on many TV shows and movies, including two TV shows still in production -- "Concrete Dove" and "Sam Savage P.I." In LA, he is pursuing his dreams working on set as much as possible. He said, "Right now, I am working on a teaser for a feature called 'Rogue Ops' about male and female assassins trying to kill each other, filmed Part one and Part two ... lots of running and gunning with fight scenes, etc. I just finished 'Heart of Hate,' which is screening at the Chinese Theatre sometime in March. I played the leader of a very bad Neo-Nazi group. I had to workout hard and trim down for that role. I am also working on a short called 'Father, Friend, Foe.' I can't release any details just yet." "As for the soaps, it was great to be on the ABC set," he continued."The actors are really nice people. They had lots of dialogue to memorize and usually get two to three days to prepare. "

20 TH ANNUAL BEACH INTL. FILM FEST

By Rachel Galvin It's that time again, time for the Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF). In its 20th year, this festival brings films from around the world, as well as filmmakers and celebrities March 26 through April 2. This year, they are bringing CELEBRITIES Tom Arnold and Kate Walsh with their film 'Any Day;' Ellar Coltrane, from the Academy Award nominated 'Boyhood,' and others. Screenings will be held at Muvico Parisian 20 and IMAX at CityPlace in West Palm Beach, Cobb Downtown at the Gardens (in Palm Beach Gardens) and Cinemark Palace 20 in Boca Raton. ?For our 20th year, we have gone all out to dazzle and surprise our audiences like they?ve never seen before,? said Randi Emerman, president and CEO of PBIFF. The film follows a middle-aged couple whose career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives. The screening will take place at Cinemark Palace 20, followed by the ?It?s a Wrap? party at Yoko San, Asian Sake Lounge in downtown Boca Raton. Fest ival of t heAr t s The Festival of the Arts will bring film, music, dance, theater and presentations by authors to Mizner Park Amphitheater and Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton March 6-15 . The festivities begin with a screening of the Academy award-winning "West Side Story" with accompaniment by the Festival Orchestra Boca playing the Leonard Bernstein score and songs with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Bernstein's daughter, Jamie, will be discussing the movie and her father's legacy before the festival even begins on March 4th at 7 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center. Cinephiles can also see Girl Rising" on March 7th at 3 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center. The film, with narration by well-known actors like Cate Blanchett, Selma Gomez, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and others, features stories by 9 girls living in "unforgiving circumstances." The stories are written by renowned writers by their native countries. The film highlights the need for education for girls in order to make wide ranging changes. Their hope is to eliminate issues like forced marriage, poverty, domestic slavery, sex trafficking and more. A panel discussion will be held after the film moderated by Barbara Schmidt, founder of Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life, including Per Loof, a director of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, and US Congressman Ted Deutch.

She may be best known from her role in TV's "Charlie's Angels," but in real life, she is a bit of an angel in a different way. Her work helping the poor was recently recognized in Palm Beach, FL by Food For the Poor. Ladd was named "Ambassador For The Poor" at the charity's 12th annual Fine Wines & Hidden Treasures gala on Jan. 22. Since 2011, Ladd has championed the needs of the destitute as spokesperson for Food For The Poor?s Angels Of The Poor program. Ladd and her husband, Brian Russell, traveled to Haiti from Jan. 20-21 with Food For The Poor representatives to see firsthand the dire situation of destitute families. In extreme heat, she entered into the homes made of plastic and metal to visit with those dwelling there, and get footage. BA M ! Emer il's Flor ida In the Feb. 22 episode of Emeril's Florida on the Cooking Channel, celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse focused on the farm-to-table movement in the Sunshine state. He was able to talk to the owners and find out about some of their signature dishes. His first stop was The Floridian restaurant in downtown St. Augustine.
