Today at Leopardstown we will, for the first time, enjoy three Group 1 Flat races on a single card. The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes regularly features very prominently in the World’s Top 100 Races published at the end of the year. We hope this year’s renewal receives similar recognition. We are delighted to host representatives of the Bahrain Turf Club and, once again, we are very grateful for their support of our richest race over the weekend. The Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes is very strongly contested as always and we welcome the HKJC World Pool Golden Fleece Stakes, for juveniles over nine furlongs, to the roster of Group 1 races in Ireland. Welcome to the 13th running of the Irish Champions Festival – Day 1 at Leopardstown Racecourse. It is a privilege to welcome you as we celebrate the very best of Irish Flat Racing. My sincere thanks to everyone who has made this weekend possible, including our sponsors and partners, owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff, stakeholders and, of course, you, our patrons. Today’s card features five Group races, including three outstanding Group 1 contests. We are especially grateful to Ballylinch Stud, the Irish European Breeders Fund, Bahrain Turf Club, Coolmore, World Pool and TonyBet for their valued support. The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes has been won by greats including Sea The Stars, Golden Horn, Almanzor, Magical and Roaring Lion. This year, Item, Almaqam and Constitution River renew their rivalry following the Juddmonte International at York. The Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes again features leading fillies and mares, with last year’s winner Fallen Angel returning to defend her title. Golden Fleece Stakes Leopardstown - Day 1 - 13th September 2025 Established in 2007 and named in honour of Vincent O’Brien’s unbeaten 1982 Derby winner, the Golden Fleece Stakes has evolved over the years and has earned promotion to Group 1 status over a new distance of one mile and a furlong. In 2013, its first year as a Group 3 event, it was won by Australia, a Galileo colt who completed the Derby/Irish Derby double the following year. His trainer, Aidan O’Brien, has won 11 of the last 16 editions, including with another subsequent dual Derby winner, Auguste Rodin, in 2022. Jessica Harrington has supplied two of the last six winners. The late Kevin Prendergast saddled the 2018 winner, Madhmoon, who went on to be second in the 2019 Derby. Aidan O’Brien’s four-strong team for Ireland’s newest Group 1 race is led by Darkness Falls, a Camelot colt who impressed when winning a Curragh maiden by seven lengths two weeks ago. He has clearly made considerable progress since finishing third behind Green Dreamer and Shakespeare at this venue in July. Joseph O’Brien’s Green Dreamer and Fozzy Stack’s Nola Soul were both eclipsed by a Ballydoyle duo in the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. Quest For Stars stretched his unbeaten record to three by beating a good yardstick at Salisbury a month ago and is a strong challenger for the Godolphin team.

The Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes of €400,000 (Group 1)

A fascinating renewal of rivalry between the Juddmonte-owned Blue Bolt, a four-year-old filly unbeaten in four starts this season, and Coolmore’s Irish 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes winner Precise. When they clashed in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, Blue Bolt won by two lengths. Precise narrowed the margin to half a length in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville. However, she has since suffered another reverse at the same venue in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Blue Bolt last tasted defeat when no match for Fallen Angel in the Sun Chariot Stakes last October. History is against the Karl Burke-trained mare, since no horse has won this event twice.

The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1)

This marks the first appearance on home soil this season of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Prix du Jockey-Club and Coral-Eclipse winner Constitution River. Things did not go to plan for the Wootton Bassett colt when he lost his unbeaten seasonal record in finishing third behind Item and Almaqam in the Juddmonte International at York. That marked a third York win for the Dante and Sky Bet winner Item, who suffered his only defeat on unsuitably soft ground in the Derby. The five-year-old Almaqam took Group 1 honours for the first time in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in May, while A Boy Named Susie has run with credit behind Constitution River at Chantilly and Sandown.

Subject to the horse being nominated, Breeders’ Cup will pay all the applicable pre-entry and entry fees for this race or the equivalent amount (US125,000) should they run in any other race in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships as provided in the ‘Win and You’re In’ Program Rules. All Breeders’ Cup World Championship International starters will receive a travel allowance an amount equal to US40,000. BAHRAIN INTERNATONAL TROPHY ‘AUTOMATIC INVITATION RACE’ The first, second and third placed horses in this race will receive automatic qualification for the 2026 Bahrain International Trophy to be held in Bahrain on Friday, 13th November.
