A very warm welcome to Leopardstown Racecourse!
Welcome to the Ballylinch Stud Classic Trials Day, the opening meeting of the 2026 Flat Season at Leopardstown and some may say, the start of the main Flat Season. We are delighted to welcome back our sponsors, jockeys, owners, trainers, stable staff, and look forward to a spring and summer of top-class flat racing here in the heart of Dublin.
We have a seven-race card for you this afternoon. The day is packed full of racing action where future Group and Classic contenders can be seen. The highlights being Group 3 races, the Ballylinch Stud Red Rocks Stakes, the Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle Stakes and the P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes.
Many high-class horses have consolidated the reputation of these Group events as an important early-season test. The Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle Stakes, has become synonymous with fillies going on to Classic glory, with recent winner Homeless Songs, following up in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Furthermore in 2025, Cerene (finished 3rd) went on to win the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. In last season’s Ballylinch Stud Red Rock Stakes, Henri Matisse (1st) fought off Arizona Blaze (3rd), setting both colts on their way to Group 1 glory.
The P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes is an established trial for the Derby. Last year saw subsequent Eclipse and Juddmonte International winner Delacroix, edge out dual Derby winner Lambourn.
As we begin our flat season, we look forward to what’s to be another memorable campaign at Leopardstown and thank our owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff, sponsors and racegoers for their continued support throughout the year ahead. Thanks again to our sponsors Ballylinch Stud and Tony Harmon Services for their support today.
On behalf of the Leopardstown team, we hope you have a great day. If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please let us know.

Horse Care on Raceday
The wellbeing of horses is integral to the thoroughbred racehorse industry. Racecourses play their part through adherence to a clear set of industry standards. Prior to each race meeting an independent track inspection is carried out by an IHRB accredited “Clerk of the Course”. This individual will check all equine facilities, including ground conditions, railing, stables and veterinary care facilities. All racecourses must meet the required standards to be granted a licence to race.
At every race meeting a team of equine veterinary surgeons supervise the wellbeing of horses. All racecourse vets must be members of the Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRVS) and will have received specialist training in the field of racecourse work.
The IHRB Veterinary Officer at each meeting has responsibilities including:
• Horse Identification - achieved through checking their microchip numbers against those recorded in their passports.
• Drug Testing - a process is vital to ensure the integrity of the sport.
• General oversight of horse care and wellbeing.
• Provision of advice to the Stewards, on veterinary matters.
A racecourse vet will check horses at the start for each race. If they deem any horse unfit to race at this point, they have the authority to withdraw the horse. During the race the vets follow on, within the convoy of vehicles seen on the service road. Other vehicles in this convoy include doctors, paramedics and ground-staff. This whole team will swing into action if any incident occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse or jockey receiving treatment. This allows the veterinary or medical teams some privacy to fully assess the casualty. Racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured participant.
The Blue Cross Horse Ambulance are also present every meeting, the service is operated by skilled personnel using specially equipped horse ambulances. They work to support the Veterinary Team. They respond swiftly to any incidents involving injured horses and transport them off the racetrack for specialist veterinary care if required.
The presentation of the horses on race day reflects the preparation at home. The results of good feeding, good housing, good health, and good wellbeing are clear to see when a horse appears at the races bright-eyed with a gleaming coat and a spring in their step. Raceday is great opportunity for the public to observe the high standards of care given to these horses.
All horses are accompanied on raceday by their own dedicated stable staff. These skilled people will have spent many months and sometimes years preparing their horses for the raceday. They lavish care and attention, day in, day out, in all weathers, and the industry is extremely proud of these excellent individuals. They help maintain Ireland’s position as an international leader in the thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing industry, ensuring best-in-class integrity and equine welfare standards.

RACE VERDICT
Skydance begins the campaign one of the most highly-rated maidens and demands plenty of respect, but the less exposed THUNDERING ON could surpass her this season and gets the vote, even though she will be in her prime over further. Dermot Weld took this last year with a newcomer so his Elmakay has to be respected on debut. Justiciar and Institute hold place claims on their best juvenile form, while Forty Six A has a possible fitness advantage. Irish Lincoln third Syzygy rates a mjaor player again if handling these quicker conditions, while Vega’s Muse and Anvika appeal if forward enough on return. However, a chance is taken on recent Dundalk second MERLIN

Race Preview:
Power Blue is bidding to become the first Pattern winner in his own right for Robson De Aguiar since he stepped up from his key role as assistant to Adrian Murray at his Westmeath base.
A son of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Space Blues, Power Blue tackles seven furlongs for the first time and carries a 3lb penalty for a Group 1 victory over the subsequent Cheveley Park winner True Love in the six-furlong Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last August. His pedigree suggests he will stay an extra furlong, and soft ground should not be a problem based on his victory in the first juvenile race of last season.
Key Stats
Aidan O’Brien has won this seven times in last ten years, six of those wins were ridden by Ryan Moore. Jim Bolger has taken two renewals.
Nine winners had at least three career runs. Eight were winning on their seasonal reappearance.
True Love’s trainer, Aidan O’Brien, saddles four runners in search of a fourth consecutive win in the race. Ryan Moore’s choice of Flushing Meadows is especially noteworthy, considering he did not race again after a defeat at this venue last July. However, it would be unwise to rule out Dorset, again the mount of Jack Cleary, who was aboard for his two important wins last season. Trojan Warrior, who looked potentially smart based on his only start last term, will be ridden by Wayne Lordan.
Grey Swallow went on to win the Irish Derby in 2004.
Ger Lyons, successful with Dr Kempf in this event in 2022, saddles Geryon, a Lope De Vega colt who won a maiden at the Curragh on his debut last August and was second to Ballydoyle-trained colts in two Group 2 events. Though no match for the subsequent William Hill Futurity winner Hawk Mountain in the Beresford Stakes, he looks capable of winning at Pattern level.

Previous Years Review:
Aidan O’Brien has trained seven of the last ten winners of this seven-furlong event, which has a fine record of showcasing emerging talent among the Classic generation of Irish-trained colts.
O’Brien’s 2025 winner Henri Matisse embellished that tradition by winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) at Longchamp. Third-placed Arizona Blaze later achieved Group 1 glory in the Flying Five at the Curragh.
The 2021 edition paved the way for several toplevel wins. The Jim Bolger-trained Poetic Flare won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and gained further Group 1 honours at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Two of those who finished behind him at Leopardstown also enjoyed top-level success later: the Ken Condon-trained Laws Of Indices in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, and the Ado McGuinness-trained A Case Of You in the Prix de l’Abbaye and again at Meydan the following season.
Gustav Klimt won the race for O’Brien in 2018, with his stablemate U S Navy Flag finishing last of four runners. U S Navy Flag turned the tables on Gustav Klimt when the pair were placed in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, and retrieved his top-class juvenile form when landing the July Cup.
Runner-up to Ballydoyle’s Never No More in the 2019 race, Madhmoon ran a terrific race for Kevin Prendergast when runner-up to Anthony Van Dyck in the Derby.

SELECTION: GERYON
RACE VERDICT
Aidan O’Brien’s four-strong squad may not have the ammunition to cope with POWER BLUE, a 6f Group 1 winner with good prospects of staying this trip. Ryan Moore’s choice of Flushing Meadows is a strong indicator, but Dorset and Trojan Warrior are also appealing. Geryon has form linked to a couple of talented Ballydoyle colts and merits respect.

Guineas Trial

Before that Newmarket triumph, for which she carries a 3lb penalty, she was no match for Power Blue in the Phoenix Stakes. That form is due to be tested in the preceding race (3:55).
The daughter of No Nay Never has powerful credentials but faces two unknowns: this is her first attempt at seven furlongs, and the first time she has run on anything other than a sound surface.
Paddy Twomey, who trained the 2024 winner A Lilac Rolla, has an interesting contender in Black Caviar Gold, who ended a four-race juvenile campaign on a bright note by winning the Group 3 Weld Park Stakes on yielding-to-soft ground at the Curragh. Pivotal Attack, runner-up in that event, represents Joe Murphy, who saddled the subsequent Coronation Stakes winner Cercene to finish third in last year’s race. She could be a progressive filly this season.
Race Preview:
The reappearance of star juvenile filly True Love provides the main focus of attention in a potentially informative contest. Despite failing to meet expectations when favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar last October, she begins the new season with a tall reputation based on her wins in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and the Cheveley Park. Key
Aidan O’Brien has taken this on 12 occasions with just Homecoming Queen and Virginia Waters winning both this & the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas but he has tasted victory only three times in the past 10 years. None of the last ten winners was penalised.
Only two winning favourites have emerged during that period.
Composing is a useful second string for Aidan O’Brien. Though found wanting at Group 1 level, she showed smart form last summer with a hattrick that featured a victory over the Ger Lyons-trained Suzie Songs in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes at the Curragh.
Blanc De Blanc, who has two Dundalk wins to her name, could pose a threat if coping with the switch to turf.
Swelter

Previous Years Review:
This Group 3 fillies’ event is an important early-season test that has served as a staging-post for many leading Irish-trained fillies in recent years. That was certainly the case when Cercene emerged as a major force after finishing third behind the Dermot Weldtrained Swelter in last season’s edition.
After another third-place finish in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Cercene gave veteran Tipperary trainer Joe Murphy and jockey Gary Carroll a treasured first Group 1 success in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Defeat in the Ballylinchsponsored race has often preceded greater things. In 2016, Jessica Harrington’s star filly Alpha Centauri struggled in testing conditions. She bounced back from that reverse to win four Grade 1s in a row. Aidan O’Brien-trained Group 1 winners Empress Josephine and Joan Of Arc also made a first three-yearold appearance in the event, as did Joseph O’Brien’s subsequent Group/Grade 1 winner Iridessa and Viadera, later a Grade 1 scorer in the US.
Several winners have progressed to Classic and Group 1 glory. Aidan O’Brien’s 2012 victor, Homecoming Queen, won the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket by a stunning nine lengths, and his 2014 winner, Bracelet, captured the Irish Oaks.
Adrian Keatley’s 2016 winner Jet Setting performed a massive giant-killing feat by beating O’Brien’s brilliant Minding in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Dermot Weld’s 2022 winner Homeless Songs also won the fillies’ Classic.
The 2017 race, in which the Ballydoyle-trained Hydrangea beat stablemate Winter by a head, was strikingly influential. Hydrangea later won twice at the highest level, including another victory over Winter in Leopardstown’s Matron Stakes. However, by that stage Winter had outshone her with four consecutive Group 1 wins, delivering a Newmarket/Curragh 1,000 Guineas double and winning the Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes.

RACE VERDICT
If True Love gets the trip and handles an ease in the ground, she could make short work of these rivals. However, it could pay to oppose her with BLACK CAVIAR GOLD, who signed off last season with a strong performance to beat Pivotal Attack at the Curragh. If excused a failure in the Moyglare, Suzie Songs comes into the reckoning, along with unexposed turf debutante Blanc De Blanc, unbeaten in two Dundalk runs. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

RACE PIONEERS
THE HORSES BEHIND THE RACES

PRIORY BELLE
1993 Priolo - Ingabelle (Taufan)
Won Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, Curragh
Priory Belle carried the Ballylinch colours to victory in the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, trained by Jim Bolger, she was the Joint Champion 2yo Filly in Ireland in 1995. After retiring to the paddocks she became the ancestress of many Ballylinch-bred winners including Group 1 winner Opinion and Group winners Fox Hunt and Anam Allta.

RED ROCKS
2003 Galileo - Pharmacist (Machiavellian)
Won Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf, Churchill Downs
Won Gr.1 Man O’War Stakes, Belmont Park
Red Rocks was bred by Ballylinch and trained by Brian Meehan to win the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in 2006. He added another top-level triumph to his record, defeating US Horse of the Year Curlin in the Gr.1 Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont.
The P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes of €60,000 (Group 3)

Key Stats
Aidan O’Brien has won this race 12 times, two of whom went on to win the Derby at Epsom.
Of the jockeys still riding only Ryan Moore (three) and Shane Foley (two) have won this more than once.
Race Preview:
Aidan O’Brien provides four runners, headed by Pierre Bonnard, who emerged as one of the stable’s top middledistance prospects after winning in quick succession at Newmarket and Saint-Cloud last October. The latter run gives him an edge over the Donnacha O’Brien-trained A Boy Named Susie. Joseph O’Brien’s impressive Curragh maiden winner James J Braddock appeals as a colt with potential for improvement.
LastYear’s Winner!
The 2025 edition ranks among the most influential in the event’s proud history. Oddson winner Delacroix developed into one of the season’s top colts, winning the Coral-Eclipse StakesatSandownandtheIrishChampionStakes. His Ballydoyle stablemate Lambourn finished secondenroutetoDerbytriumphsatEpsomand theCurragh,adoublecompletedbythree20thcenturywinnersoftherace,Galileo(2001),High Chaparral(2002)andHarzand(2016).

RACE VERDICT
Two wins at 1m2f last season imply that PIERRE BONNARD can become a credible Derby contender. He can advance his claims here by confirming Saint-Cloud form with A Boy Named Susie. In a line-up dominated by the three O’Brien stables, James J Braddock is interesting despite his lack of exposure to Pattern opposition as a juvenile.
