LEARNING OUTCOME 1 Differentiate between the general nurse and advanced practice nurse roles in child health nursing. CONCEPTS FOR LECTURE 1. Nurses provide care to children in a wide variety of settings. Nurses care for children who are well and those who are ill, including children with acute and chronic conditions. 2. Nurses may specialize in pediatrics. Nurses working with pediatric patients may choose to build upon their basic educational foundation, focusing on and meeting the expected competencies of the Society of Pediatric Nursing. 3. The role of the general nurse in the care of children includes direct patient care to both the child and family in a variety of settings. The nurse may also work in the educator role for the child and family. The nurse acts as an advocate for the child and family. The nurse may function in the case manager role. The pediatric nurse may also focus on research. 4. The general pediatric nurse follows the nursing model to assess and determine the appropriate nursing diagnoses, provide interventions to meet patients’ needs, and evaluate to determine outcomes. The general nurse must determine the needs of the child and family together and make certain that the needs of the patient and family have been addressed. 5. The advanced practice nurse (APN), either as a clinical nurse specialist or pediatric nurse practitioner, functions in a different role. The APN has a graduate-level education and is prepared to practice in a specialty area and/or at a higher level of responsibility for the patient.
