THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE. It’s poetic that Washington Metropolitan Chapter Community Associations Institute is commemorating its 40th anniversary this month. I, too, recently reached a personal and professional milestone. After serving as your Executive Director for the last four years, I will be leaving this spring in search of my next professional challenge in public service. When I accepted this position in 2013, I could tell WMCCAI was poised for growth and success. All of the ingredients were there: a dedicated and talented staff; an engaged group of volunteers and leaders; and the willingness to trust, dream, invest in the future, try new things, and learn. You did, and your hard work paid off. The biggest and best CAI Chapter grew by another 25% and reached a number of firsts.

While I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, here are a few highlights that I will always hold dear: • Our flagship event – Conference & Expo – saw a significant expansion. Even after adding booths year after year, selling out the expo hall became the norm. Registration grew from 1,600 to over 2,000 and nearly all of this increase was from community association volunteer leaders and managers. • The national headquarters of Community Associations Institute recognized WMCCAI with the overall “Excellence Award” for public affairs, membership, management, member services, and leadership two years in a row. • Our member business partners and management companies continued to find value in the Chapter and increased their investment in us. The Chapter Partnership Program, a major funding component, grew by over $100,000 (58%). • We crossed the 3,000 member threshold for the first time. • Through a year-and-a-half long strategic planning process, we realigned our resources, roles and responsibilities, and increased our capacity in education, events and membership. • We made better use of technology for managing Conference & Expo and implemented a state-of-the-art registration process for all of our programs and events. We also recently found our “new” home for the Chapter. One that allows us greater flexibility in working toward our mission. Come see it later this year after our renovation! As rewarding as these different achievements are, the icing on the cake is that together they moved us closer to our vision of being recognized as the leading resource for community associations and our business partners. And that’s what matters most. The Chapter is in a really good position for continued growth and I’m partnering with the Board to ensure a smooth transition. I will miss you all and hope to stay in touch with the new friends and colleagues I’ve made along the way. It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as your Executive Director.

He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mass communications, and George Mason University, where he earned a Master of Public Administration degree, concentrating on nonprofit management. Rankin has 20 years of nonprofit/association management experience and is a Certified Association Executive.

Mazzarella Elected to APCM Board Associa CMC President Nick Mazzarella has been elected to Community Association Institutes Association of Professional Community Managers Board (APCM) as an at-large member. He will serve a two year term beginning January 1, 2017. The board represents all community managers and consists of 12 members providing input on policy matters to the CAI Board of Trustees and serves as a resource to staff. Mazzarella has more than 28 years of experience in managing largescale facilities.

SOLitude Professionals Awarded for Water Quality Treatment Marc Bellaud, President of SOLitude Lake Management, and Michael Lennon, Aquatic Specialist and Territory Leader, were named for the Technology and Development Award at the 2016 SePRO Preferred Applicator Seminar. The team members were honored with this award for their partnership with SePRO in conducting innovative research in the final phase of development of a new herbicide. Additionally, 11 water quality management professionals from SOLitude won Seeing is Believing Awards from SePRO.

Reserve Advisors Give Back for 25th Anniversary To celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, the D.C. office of Reserve Advisors will volunteer at Capital Area Foodbank four times! They’ve already helped out in December and are scheduled to return again in March 2017.

2017 Scholarship Program We’re excited to announce that we are offering a scholarship award for a fourth year! This year’s topic is “How Could You Implement a Green Initiative Using Teen Volunteers in Your Neighborhood?” The application can be found on, www.caidc.org. The scholarship program is for all Washington metro area highschool seniors who will be enrolled fall semester in post high school educational courses in a four-year college, community college, or vocational school. What went through your mind? Yes I was surprised. WOW! I didn’t realize I did anything worth recognition, relative to what others do. Why do you feel it is important to be so active in WMCCAI? I believe in volunteering and getting involved. WMCCAI is vital to our industry and I like to be part of the planning for the events and getting to know others in the industry that I might not otherwise know. By being involved I’m vested in the success of the organization, not just my own, and that helps everyone be more successful.

What is the best advice you have ever received? What is the best you have ever given? If you don’t know the answer to something, let them know you’ll get the answer – don’t try to fake it.

1984 WMCCAI hired our first official Executive Director, Carol Chance. “True story...The Chapter didn’t have funds to pay her. Carol was told that she had to earn her compensation by increasing membership, programs, and sponsorships to generate enough income to pay her salary. WMCCAI convinced her she could do it. And she did! She worked out of a spare office at CAI National since the Chapter only had a mailing address, not a physical address.”

June “CADO C.A.T.” was one of the industry’s standard computer systems. It assisted with Condominium Association Accounting and “Word Processing.”

January The Chapter will begin advising the membership of legal cases and issues that affect our local area.

June David Regenbaum was the first member of WMCCAI to earn his PCAM Designation.

1980’S 1980 There were a number of rental apartments being converted to condominiums. Bob Diamond and Ron Kirby convinced the Chapter Board to risk the $300 in the bank to develop and host a seminar on proper conversions. The Chapter yielded $6,500!

Ken Chadwick is president. He laid the groundwork for the Virginia Legislative Coalition, which eventually became our current Virginia Legislative Action Committee. This came about after a legislation hearing in which two individual CAI chapters took different positions on the same bill.

The Chapter was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Virginia Common Interest Community Fund for the development and implementation of a training program for homeowners.

Under Brendan Bunn’s presidency, the current Chapter Partnership Program was established: Benefactors, Patrons, Supporters. This new program -- which was not initially favored by companies used to the prior approach -- allowed various levels of sponsorship for firms serving the industry and revenue increased immensely for the Chapter.

love the Annual Dinner that the Chapter does every year. It is great to see so many friends and colleagues all dressed up and having a good time. At the Annual Dinner, several awards are given out such as the Rising Star Award, Committee Chair of the Year, and the President’s Award. However, there is one award that I think is the most prestigious of all of the awards, the Hall of Fame Award. There have been approximately 48 individuals inducted into the Chapter’s Hall of Fame. If you’ve ever been to the Chapter office you might have noticed the Hall of Fame plaques on the wall. Many names on the wall are still active with the Chapter, some have retired or moved on, and sadly some are no longer with us. So who are these folks who have been placed in such high esteem by the Chapter over the last 40 years? A number of them are past chapter presidents like Wil Washington, Theresa Melson, Pete Mechak, and John Rhodes. However, serving as a chapter president is not prerequisite for getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. According to the Chapter’s Policies and Procedures, the Hall of Fame Award is presented, upon recommendation by the Executive Committee, to Chapter members who have provided continuous, dedicated service to the Chapter for a minimum of 10 years. We reached out to some previous Hall of

Famers to find out why they were so awesome. First, there is the group of Hall of Famers that make up the inaugural class which was in the mid-1980’s. Some of the initial inductees were Ronald Kirby, Howard Goldklang, Rick Leeds, David Mercer, and B. William Smink. Ironically, most of the members of the Hall of Fame have served as a member of the Board of Directors. Yet just serving on the Board is not enough to make one a member of the “Hall of Fame.” Some of our Hall of Fame members: Joe Douglass was inducted for not only his service on the Board of Directors but also for serving as Chapter President in 1992-1993. He served on the Maryland and District of Columbia Legislative Committees, wrote articles for Quorum, and volunteered his time to teach classes on behalf of the Chapter. Staci Gelfound was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2010. She first joined the chapter in 1992. Staci served on the task force that created the Chapter’s Benefactor Program. She was member of the Manager committee, the HOA-POA committee, the Education Training task force committee, the Membership committee, and served as a Council Chair. In 2001 she was elected to the Board and served as Secretary and then later President. Michael Nagle, who has now moved to sunny Arizona, was inducted in the early 1990’s.

He was awarded Volunteer of the Year several times and worked on getting the Chapter’s 501(c) (3) status submitted and approved. He regularly taught the Board Training course formerly known as the “ABCs” or the “Essentials” Course. He has written for Quorum and taught other classes for the Chapter. John Manougian was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993. John has been a member since 1980 and has served in various capacities for the Chapter. He has written time and time again for Quorum and taught a number of classes. In fact, he taught so much that he was awarded Educator of the Year in 1991 by the Chapter. John served on the Board of Directors, later becoming Vice President, then President of the Chapter. He was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee in 2000 and served on the District of Columbia Legislative Committee. Brendan Bunn is also a former Chapter President. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. Brendan has taught on numerous occasions at the annual Conference and Expo. He has served as Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Board of Directors Rick Leeds is one of the founders of the Chapter and one of the very early board members. During his time on the Board, the Chapter hired its first Executive Director, Carol Chance. He is a former President of the Chapter and always takes an active role in recruiting new members. Doug Henken was inducted in 2013 to the Hall of Fame. He served two terms on the Board of Directors. He has served on the Membership Committee, the Education Committee, the Marketing Committee, and the task force on developing a web-based e-learning course for association leaders. Doug has taught a number of classes and has always helped out when asked.

Petrine Squires was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. She served on the Education Committee and the Conference & Expo Committee based on the advice of Howard Goldklang. She served as co-chair for the Conference and Expo Committee for a

number of years and was awarded Chairman of the year in 1996. Howard Goldklang was one of the first inductees and served as the Chapter’s first treasurer. He was elected President in 1997 and focused on increasing the size and scope of the annual Conference and Expo. During his term, we began Jump Start January in 1998. He also takes an active role in recruiting new members to the chapter and as Petrine can testify to, will give you advice on how to best serve the chapter. Peggy Zandler remembers when the chapter meetings were held at the West Park Hotel in Tysons Corner. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000. Her service includes the Virginia Legislative Committee, the Education Committee, and the Annual Dinner Committee as a member and chair. She has help to grow the chapter from a small grass roots organization to where we are today. Judy Rosen is a member of the Hall of Fame and a former chapter President. Over the years she has been committed to actively recruiting new members into the chapter. She jokes and says that she was inducted because of her competitiveness with the New Jersey Chapter! However, I think it was because of her years of service and support of the chapter. One of our newer inductees is Arthur Dubin. Arthur’s induction into the Chapter’s Hall of Fame in 2015 is well deserved. Arthur has been a member of CAI since 1976 (yep, since the beginning). He is a previous member of the Board of Directors. He helped the chapter find its current location and has written time and time again for Quorum. Arthur has taught many courses on behalf of the Chapter including running the manager’s forum for a number of years in the 1980’s. He even did a course with David Mercer and Craig Wilson on how to manage stress. I think we might need to bring that class back! As you can see it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get inducted into the Hall of Fame. We are lucky as a chapter to have so many people who have dedicated their free time to help the chapter grow to where we are today.

Bruce was awarded the WMCCAI Rising Star in 2011, Committee Chair of the Year in 2012, and Educator of the Year in 2015.

017 is especially significant, as it is the 40th anniversary of WMCCAI. As I stated in my inaugural President’s message of Quorum, 40 years ago, the founders of WMCCAI set out to create an organization that would exist to serve common interest communities and their integral volunteers. WMCCAI has grown substantially from its modest beginnings, but the Chapter’s goals and values remain the same. Today, as the largest chapter of Community Associations Institute, WMCCAI continues to proudly serve common interest communities by providing industry leading advocacy, education, and resources to their volunteers, managers, and business partners. But what is in store for WMCCAI in 2017 and in the years beyond? First, 2017 will be a year of gratitude for the Chapter, ensuring that those who have given their time or financial support realize WMCCCAI’s appreciation for those efforts. Throughout 2017, WMCCAI will celebrate its past successes, as well as its supporters and volunteers for their contributions over the past 40 years, ultimately culminating in

a formal celebration of the Chapter’s 40th Anniversary at the 2017 Annual Awards Dinner. 2017 will be a year of growth. Although the Chapter recently achieved just over 3,000 members, we aim to ensure that our membership continues to grow. The Chapter’s leadership continues to work toward expanding and increasing the value of WMCCAI membership by actively encouraging new and exciting ideas for our educational offerings and resources, as well as our networking events.

While this may not seem on its face to be a significant change, the lease extension will include a turnkey renovation of the entire headquarters office space.

2017 will also be a year of change. With the recent announcement of Matt Rankin’s departure from the Chapter, we will be conducting a search for a new Executive Director. A task force has been appointed and the search is currently underway. We are optimistic about this process and the opportunity it provides.

Plans to fully renovate and modernize the office space are anticipated to begin shortly after this year’s Conference and Expo, and should be finalized just a few short months after. One of the most significant and exciting changes to WMCCAI’s headquarters will be an expansion of our conference facilities. Once the renovation is complete, the Chapter will be able to host educational and networking events on-site, both easing the strain on the Chapter’s budget, as well as staff resources.

The board also recently approved a lease extension to extend the Chapter’s headquarters current lease for an additional 10 years.

In addition, 2017 will see the launch of the Chapter’s newest website redesign. In 1998, under Wil Washington’s leadership, WMC-

CAI launched its first website. Nearly 20 years later, the website has been fully overhauled to better meet the informational demands of the 21st century and to improve the experience of our website’s users. In 2018, WMCCAI will host the CAI National Conference, here in Washington, D.C. This will be an incredible opportunity for WMCCAI to highlight its successes to all of CAI, and to assist in improving our fellow Chapters’ efforts in promoting our shared values around the globe. In the coming years, it is my hope that WMCCAI’s leadership will continue to work toward WMCCAI’s vision as adopted by the Board in 2015, to be recognized as the leading resource for community associations and business partners. The future for our Chapter is bright. I look forward to 40 more years of success for WMCCAI and to continuing my dedication to the Chapter for many years to come. I invite you to do the same! Washington Metro Chapter is celebrating 40 years of serving the needs of owners, managers, and business partners, and the Conference & Expo Committee has pulled out all the stops to make the 2017 Conference & Expo the biggest and best yet! Successes of 2016, such as the simplified selfcheck-in, are being brought back to continue giving attendees what they expect from CAI’s largest conference. The committee worked hard to address attendee concerns regarding educational sessions and navigating the expo hall. A modified schedule was created to allow over two hours of dedicated expo hall time without educational events running concurrently. And you’ll need those two hours if you want to meet with the more than 200 exhibitors on the expo floor! Other changes in 2017 include adding another row of exhibitors to meet the demand of those who want to be part of the show. Committee members have been busy reaching out to business partners who provide services attendees want to see more of, so expect to see some new companies in 2017. 34 | Quorum­
