Sport and Social Change explores the dynamic relationship between athletic practices and broader societal transformations. This course examines how sports have influenced and been influenced by issues such as race, gender, class, national identity, and social justice movements throughout history and in contemporary contexts. Through case studies, critical readings, and discussions, students analyze the role of athletes, fans, institutions, and media in shaping social norms and promoting or challenging change. The course encourages students to consider the power of sport as both a reflection of and catalyst for social progress, while critically engaging with the complexities and controversies inherent in the intersection of sport and society.
