This course explores the dynamic relationship between social institutions such as family, education, religion, media, law, and the economy and gender. It examines how these institutions shape and reproduce gender norms, roles, and identities, as well as the ways in which individuals negotiate, resist, or reinforce gendered expectations within institutional contexts. Through theoretical perspectives and empirical case studies, students analyze the intersections of gender with other social categories like class, race, and sexuality, and consider the implications of institutional practices for social equity and justice. The course encourages critical thinking about power, policy, and strategies for change in relation to gender and institutional structures.
